Ghanaian business mogul and philanthropist, Ibrahim Mahama, has fully funded a life-saving kidney transplant for 13-year-old Jeffery Adjei Boakye in India, six days after his plight was highlighted in the media.

Jeffery, a Grade 7 pupil at Zion Praise Educational Complex at Meduma, in the Ashanti Region, had been battling end-stage kidney disease and required urgent financial support of $40,000 for a transplant in India.

A report by GHOne TV about the boy’s condition drew the attention of the public, including Ibrahim Mahama, who stepped in to cover the full cost of the transplant.

Jeffery has been receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where medical experts indicated that a kidney transplant was his best chance of survival.

He had been undergoing haemodialysis three times a week to manage his condition.

Following Mahama’s intervention, Medical staff at the hospital’s renal unit have since begun preparations for Jeffery’s travel abroad for the procedure.

Jeffery’s mother, Janet Koraman Kumi, expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Mahama for what she described as a life-saving intervention. She also thanked GHOne TV for making her son’s condition public to attract support.

According to Madam Koraman Kumi, Jeffery was born prematurely with congenital abnormalities affecting his urinary tract. With time his condition worsened into chronic kidney disease and eventually end-stage renal failure affecting both kidneys.

Doctors say Jeffery remains vulnerable to infections due to his weakened immune system, but are optimistic that the transplant will significantly improve his chances of recovery.
