When the University of Lagos (UNILAG) holds its 60th Special Anniversary Convocation next Wednesday, 83-year-old Dayo Michael Duyile will be among the Ph.D. graduands. The school’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola disclosed this in her Tuesday pre-convocation press conference at the UNILAG Senate Chambers.
“The oldest graduating student is (Male) Duyile, Dayo Michael who obtained his Ph.D. in Mass Communication at the age of 83,” she said during the event at Akoka. Incidentally, Duyile, Dayo Michael was the Daily Times of Nigeria journalist who covered the Opening Ceremony event of the University of Lagos on October 3, 1962.”
The media veteran won’t be the only history maker on the day. Another octogenarian Okonji Obiageli bagged a postgraduate degree.
“The oldest graduating student is (Female) OKONJI, Bridget Obiageli who obtained her M.Ed. in Guidance and Counselling at the age of 82 years,” Professor Ogunsola added.
While giving further details about the event, she said the 53rd convocation ceremony will only feature postgraduate students. The move was necessitated by the eight-month industrial action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which she described as “a great setback to scholarship.”
