The Chairman of the Governing Board for InterCity STC Coaches Limited, Mr. Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi, has disclosed that about 75% of the fleet of buses operating under the STC brand are privately owned by individuals and not by the government.
“About 75% of the buses have been hijacked by cronies of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)”, he told Host Kojo Marfo on Fakye TV’s Daybreak morning show in Kumasi.
Nana Kwasi, who is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), also alleged that key assets, including a training school for drivers, had been handed over to private entities under the previous administration.
Chairman Nana Kwasi described the InterCity STC Company the current administration met on assumption of office on January 7, 2025 as a “skeleton”.
“The STC we came to meet was a skeleton,” he said, adding “STC was valuing government vehicles but the Akufo-Addo administration gave it to somebody.”
Chairman Nana Kwasi claimed the previous administration deliberately neglected fleet expansion and instead allowed private buses to dominate the company’s operations.
“Buses give STC more cash, but they (NPP) broke it down and gave it to private individuals,” he stated.
“As we speak, STC buses belonging to the government are less than 35; the remaining belong to private people”, a situation, he said, the Board which he chairs and management are working closely to change and significantly enhance the company’s entire spectrum of operations.
Nana Kwasi explained “private people,’ to mean cronies of the previous political administration, adding that “They wanted to collapse STC. Instead of buying more buses for the government, they ignored that and brought in buses owned by friends.”
He stressed that a lot of STC-branded buses belong to private people because the company does not have them.
“Now we are trying to have more buses so the money will come to the government.”
The Board chairman cum Regional party chairman further revealed that the Labour Roundabout terminal in Kumaso is privately owned.
According to Nana Kwasi, he has objected to the branding of the terminal with STC’s name since it does not belong to the STC.
He emphasised that “STC buses belonging to the government are few”, while the assets may appear government-owned on paper, revenues largely benefit private pockets at the expense of the national kitty.
