28th Ghana University games open at KNUST

The 14-day long Ghana universities games, put together by the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has began at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

The tournament was postponed for two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, after the University of Ghana last hosted it in 2020.

Professor Peter Twumasi, the Director-General of Ghana National SportsAuthority (NSA) commended the Management of KNUST for hosting the 28th edition of Ghana University Sports Association, as well as the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the excellent preparations for the 14-day long tournament.

He recounted the contribution of GUSA Games in terms of production of athletes and technical support to the formation of national teams, which helped Ghana to excel at the 2019 African Games in Morocco, 2020; Tokyo Olympics, 2022; Commonwealth Games and currently the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim, President of Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) appealed to the government to commit more resources in the development of University Sporting curriculum, in the training of the sports men and women.

He encouraged the participating institutions to make the activities attractive to the youth by leading the way in that regard.According to him, the Video Assistant (VAR) and goal line technology in football has contributed in minimising errors, mistakes and conflicts and tasked the universities to apply Science and Technology to sports.

He stressed that young sports men and women must give their all for the development and growth of sporting activities and disabuse their minds that sports is meant for only those who are not academically good.The GUSA President explained that sports is rather an avenue for those who are good in sporting disciplines to excel.

Professor Rita Dickson, the Vice Chancellor of KNUST also expressed her profound gratitude to the organizers and the participating institutions for honouring the occasion.

According to her, the KNUST had the opportunity to host the 22nd edition of the games ten years ago and welcomed the hosting of the 28th edition which coincides with the 70th anniversary of the institution as a welcome news.
