The Ghana Police Service says one person has died, six escaped custody, while five were injured during a mob attack on the Nkoranza Police Divisional and District Headquarters.

The attack was said to have occurred on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, when the Nkoranza Police Divisional and District Headquarters was invaded by an irate youth mob who attacked the stations with all kinds of dangerous implements.

According to a statement released by the Police Headquarters in Accra, the mob was allegedly protesting the death of Albert Donkor, an armed robbery suspect, who died during a police anti-robbery operation.

The statement signed by the Director-General of Public Affairs, DCOP Kwesi Ofori, said the police also responded appropriately to the situation including bringing in reinforcement teams from the Regional Headquarters and adjoining regions to restore law and order.

It explained that during the incident, six suspects who were in police custody managed to escape and that strenuous efforts were underway to have them recaptured.

The statement further added that as a result of the attack, six persons were injured and sent to the St. Theresa’s Hospital, Nkoranza, and that one of them died while receiving treatment, while five others were currently on admission and responding to treatment.

It said two suspects had so far been arrested in connection with the attack and were in police custody. All other persons involved in perpetrating this barbaric act were being pursued to face justice.

It gave the assurance to the public that the situation was currently under control, and that the police had been deployed extensively at Nkoranza and its environs.

“We, therefore, wish to assure all law-abiding citizens to go about their socioeconomic activities without fear or hindrance, for the police will do whatever it takes to protect their lives and property,” it said.
