A delegation from Zanzibar, led by Mr. Abdullah Mgongo, Director of Planning, Policy and Research at the Office of the President and Ms. Sabra I. Machano, Municipal Director of West B Municipal Council, paid a working visit to the facilities of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the sanitation giant, under the Jospong Group of Companies.

The visit, which forms part of Zanzibar’s strategy to address its mounting urban waste crisis, was aimed at learning from Jospong’s proven waste management ecosystem, which has positioned Ghana as a model for sustainable sanitation on the continent.

The Zanzibar team toured Zoomlion’s expensive infrastructure, which includes waste sorting centers, composting facilities, integrated recycling plants and engineered landfill systems. Their mission was clear: identify scalable, practical systems to adopt back home.

“We are deeply impressed by the systems we have seen here from community-level waste collection to high-end processing facilities.

“It is clear that Jospong’s impact goes beyond sanitation, it drives job creation, environmental sustainability and economic transformation,” said Mr.Mgongo.

He emphasised that Zanzibar is keen to establish partnerships that enable knowledge sharing, technical cooperation and local adaptation.

“What Jospong has achieved in Ghana is remarkable. We see a clear opportunity for collaboration, especially as Zanzibar pushes forward with reforms in our municipal waste management strategies.”

As part of the official itinerary, the Zanzibar delegation paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim.

He welcomed the team on behalf of the President and people of Ghana and lauded the Jospong Group’s contribution to national development.

“The work of Jospong in the sanitation space is exemplary. It has not only helped clean our cities but has also placed Ghana on the map as a hub for innovative and sustainable waste management.

“We are excited about this engagement and ready to support stronger intra-African collaboration in sanitation and environmental governance,” said the Minister.

Director of International Business at the Jospong Group, Dr. Alexander Kumi-Larbi Jnr., used the occasion to outline the Group’s Pan-African expansion vision.

He highlighted how the model built in Ghana is being studied and replicated in several African countries as part of a broader strategy to drive environmental transformation across the continent.

Dr. Kumi-Larbi Jnr. noted that “Over the past decade, we have developed a complete waste management ecosystem in Ghana that is now being studied and adopted by other African governments.

“Through strategic partnerships, technology transfer, and local capacity building, we are ready to support countries like Zanzibar to build resilient, modern and environmentally responsible waste systems.”

The Jospong Group’s Pan-African waste management model is anchored in collaboration, infrastructure development and the creation of green jobs.

Its success in Ghana has shown how private sector leadership can complement public policy to achieve large-scale urban development goals.

This latest engagement with Zanzibar reflects a growing trend where African countries are turning to home-grown solutions rather than solely relying on external models.

As the visit came to a close, it was clear that this was not just a knowledge-sharing tour, but the beginning of a potential long-term partnership that could help reshape the sanitation narrative in East Africa.

For Jospong, it is another step in its mission to power Africa’s green transformation one city at a time.
