Youth attack Asawase Police Station in Kumasi

The Asawase Police Station over the week-end came under attack by a youth group over the demise of their colleague identified as Salawudeen Shilla.

Not even a warning shot by the police will deter irate youth to recoil into their shelves as they hurled stones and other objects that destroyed the louvre blades and other items at the police station.

Information available to The Chronicle has it that the Sunday nocturnal attack was so severe that the meter of the Electricity Company Ghana (ECG), which connects the security installation to the national grid was destroyed by the rampaging youth.

The attack, this paper gathered, was  followed an operation carried out by the police to flush out drug addicts at Gorou, a community noted for narcotic trade and gangsterism at Afful Nkwanta, a suburb of Kumasi.

As such, these aggrieved youth stormed the police station and threw stones and other objects at the security facility.

The assembly man for the Asawase West electoral area, Mr. Gideon Okai, confirmed the development to The Chronicle when contacted and said the attack occurred around 7:00PM.

“The youth were many throwing stones and other stuff. They destroyed the electric meter, so light was totally off at the police station. They met one police woman inside – Hannah. They wanted to attack the police officer but they realised she was a female so they stopped,”Gideon Okai told The Chronicle in a telephone interview, adding “It was very tense and some of the police officers gave warning shots.”

On the rationale behind the attack, the assembly man said the youth accused the police of killing one of their own, so they went to the police station to retaliate.

Asked about what led to his demise, Okai indicated that he died during an operation by the Asawase Police at Goroo.

According to Gideon Okai, during the said operation, which was carried out over the week-end, the police attempted to round up residents in the area, a development which led to a struggle between the residents and the peace officers.

He added that one of those resisting the operation by the police was rushed to hospital, but could not survive.

Asked about the security of the place, the Asawase West assembly man noted that security has been beefed up at the police station, adding that the police are actively patrolling the area.

Responding to a question, Okai noted that the youth are playing hide and seek with the police and there has not been any arrest so far.

The youth, he noted, are not residents of Asawase but Goroo in the down town enclave of Afful Nkwanta.
