Vivo Energy Ghana has launched a new project dubbed “Fit2Drive Wellness Programme” for commercial drivers as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to increase safety on the road.
The Fit2Drive Wellness Programme aims to promote and enhance the physical and mental well being of commercial drivers, ensuring they maintain optimal health and safety standards while on the road.
The programme is a sequel to the earlier “Stop, think & drive” road safety campaign, which was championed by Vivo Energy Ghana in partnership with transporters and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).
Launching the programme at the Neoplan Station in Accra yesterday, a speech read on behalf of the Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, Kader Maiga said road safety encompasses observing strict traffic rules and the wellbeing of the driver.
Therefore, Vivo Energy believes that investing in the wellness of drivers was fundamental to promoting road safety, particularly, focusing on the physical fitness, mental well-being, and overall health of the drive.
Mr. Maiga added that it was the only means players in the transport industry could strive to create a community of safer and healthier drivers.
To achieve this, a comprehensive wellness programme, which includes health screening, fitness training, and educational seminars among others, had been designed to help drivers.
Mr. Maiga stated that the oil company acknowledges the vital role commercial drivers played in the economy, tirelessly navigating the roads day and night to ensure goods and passengers reach their destinations safely.
“However, with this role comes great responsibility, as road safety remains an ever pressing concern. As we navigate the challenges of the modern world, prioritizing our health has become more crucial than ever,” he added.
He hoped the programme would create a culture of holistic wellness by instilling a sense of responsibility and awareness among commercial drivers, as “we aim to reduce the risks associated with fatigue, stress, and other health-related factors that could compromise the safety of our roads.”
Mr. Maiga also proposed health insurance component associated with Shell loyalty club for drivers, since its benefits cannot be understated.
Shell loyalty club insurance, he said: “It grants you and your loved ones the peace of mind that in times of medical emergencies or unforeseen health issues, you receive through our Partnership with Hollard Insurance and Allianz Ghana By joining the Shell loyalty.”
He could not have end his speech without laying emphasis on Regular exercise can improve alertness, reaction times, and overall physical capabilities, making drivers more responsive and resilient on the road.
The Director of Planning and Programmes at the NRSA, Daniel Waku, boasted of the successes chalked with “Stop, think & drive,” which was launched some three years ago, as the evidence was embedded in the reduction of the number of traffic road crashes experienced this year against 2022.
He added the number of deaths through traffic road crashes has reduced by 11% as well as injuries had also reduced by 2% in 2023, as against last year.
“This we would have to give recognition to everybody especially our brothers…because they are doing a very great job in this business. In fact let me add again, the number of commercial vehicles that are getting involved in accident on our roads is also reducing as against the previous years,” he stated.
He advised the drivers that if they are not feeling well it means that their driving will also not go well, therefore, Fit2Drive Wellness campaign was in the right direction.
Kingsley Adam at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) emphasised the need for the drivers to prioritise their health and wellbeing by going for regular medical checkups.
Vivo Energy used the opportunity to organise health screening for the drivers.
