The Dansoman Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit, has sentenced Prince Opoku Agyenkwa, a 36-year-old unemployed man, to five years imprisonment for stealing items valued at over GH¢1 million belonging to a Swiss Group Ghana administrator and his wife.

Prince Agyenkwa was found guilty on multiple counts of stealing, conspiracy to steal and causing unlawful damage, contrary to sections 23(1), 124 and 152 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

His alleged accomplice, identified as Mensah, alias Taller, is currently at large.

The convict pleaded guilty with explanation to all counts. However, after considering his explanation on count two, the court entered a plea of not guilty for him on that charge and proceeded to trial on the rest.

The Incident

According to the facts presented by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Portia Nuarko, the complainant, Jose Carlos Catabig, a Filipino and administrator of Swiss Group Ghana, resides with his wife, Deejay Dalucio, at Spintex, Aviation area, in Accra.

On September 14, 2025 the couple, together with their niece, left their residence for errands. While away, Mrs. Dalucio received a notification from their home security system, indicating that someone was inside their house. She immediately called her husband, who confirmed that he was not at home.

Suspecting a break-in, the complainant alerted the Baatsona and Manet Police and rushed home. Upon arrival, the police discovered that the burglars had already fled with valuable items, including:

A Filipino passport (No. P30116138) belonging to Mrs. Dalucio, a MacBook laptop valued at GH¢28,000 and three sets of jewellery worth GH¢1,000,000 and a red Eagle safe containing an unspecified amount of foreign currency, and other valuable personal effects.

In the process, the burglars caused extensive damage to a bulletproof security door, a safe and a barbed wire fence, collectively valued at over GH¢100,000.

Arrest and Recovery

Following sustained police intelligence, Prince Agyenkwa was arrested on September 18, 2025. A search on him led to the recovery of a gold watch, two iPhones, $5,000 in cash and GH¢21,645.

Further police searches at his Agbogba hideout uncovered three gold chains, two gold rings, a silver chain with a locket, one Apple MacBook laptop, two ladies’ handbags, two wristwatches, two Apple Watch straps, one gold locket and male and female clothing.

Prince Agyenkwa later led the police to another location at Dansoman, Glefe, where officers retrieved a Filipino passport bearing Mrs. Dalucio’s name and two ladies’ purses containing ATM cards and business cards. During interrogation, the convict confessed to the crime and identified Mensah, alias Taller, as his accomplice who orchestrated the operation.

Court’s Decision

The court found the evidence overwhelming and convicted Agyenkwa accordingly. In sentencing him, Her Honour Abdul-Bassit ordered the counts to run concurrently since most of the offences attracted a sentence of six months. Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing to apprehend Mensah (alias Taller), who remains at large.
