The National Sports Authority (NSA), through the initiative of Miss Claudia Abena Kwarteng Lumor, has officially opened an ultramodern Astro Turf at Kotei in the Oforikrom Municipality in the Ashanti Region.
The facility, which meets international standards of 105m by 68m square metres, has a 10-year lifespan and floodlights, was commenced in August 2022. It is aimed at helping to reduce youth indulgence in crime, because it would serve as a recreational centre for them.
The project, executed over 14 months, was constructed by Britz Engineering Solutions & Trading Limited (BEST) and fully funded by Ghana Gas, led by Dr. Ben Asante, Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The Director-General for the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, said the facility added to the remarkable number of modern Astro Turfs the government had built in various communities across the country in the past four years in fulfillment of the promise to bring modern sports infrastructure to the community, regional and national levels.
The Kotei Astro Turf, dubbed the Oforikrom Project, brings to 10 the number of Astro Turfs constructed in the Ashanti Region by various government agencies such as Ghana Gas, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), out of which five have been completed and handed over to the various assemblies.
He urged the youth, nananom, the assembly and all stakeholders in the community to cultivate a good maintenance culture to ensure the full lifespan of the turf.
The Director of Best Company Limited, Nana Antwi, thanked the chiefs and people of Kotei and Claudia Kwarteng Lumor for their support. He said BEST Limited was poised to partner and develop Ghana through sports.
Ms. Claudia Kwarteng Lumor, UN Ambassador (NFPA) Ghana and Founder of Glitz Africa and also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant hopeful, who conceived the Astro Turf concept for the community, urged the delegates and good people of Oforikrom to support her ambition to become the next parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the NPP.
She assured the community of massive development to improve the livelihoods of the residents.
