The United States Embassy in Ghana has extended its condolences to the government and people of Ghana following the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, which claimed the lives of six young women during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
In a statement shared on its official X handle (formerly Twitter), the Embassy said:
“The U.S. Embassy offers its deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives during the November 12 recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra. Our thoughts are with the people of Ghana in this painful moment.”
The incident occurred when thousands of job seekers converged on the stadium for the ongoing military recruitment exercise, resulting in overcrowding and a fatal stampede.
According to reports, apart from the six deceased, twenty-two other victims were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for emergency treatment, with five said to be in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
