Tiwa Savage receives ‘Queen of Afrobeats’ doctorate degree

United Kingdom’s University of Kent has honoured an old student, Nigerian Afrobeats Artiste, Tiwa Savage, born Tiwatope Savage, with a doctorate degree as ‘Queen of Afrobeats.’

As part of the honorary award, UK’s Kent University tweeted; “Tiwa studied Business at Kent before she embarked on her incredible career – a reminder to all our graduates today to reach for the stars, adding that they were “super proud.”

Tiwa began her music career doing backup vocals for Artistes. She was the first woman to win the Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards.

Born in Isale Eko, she relocated to London at the age of 11 for her secondary education. Five years later, she began her music career doing backup vocals for artists such as George Michael and Mary J. Blige.

Her debut studio album,‘Once Upon a Time’ was released on the 3rd of July 2013. Savage’s second studio album ‘R.E.D’ was released on 19th December 2015. In November 2018, Savage won Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards, becoming the first woman to win the category. In May 2019, she announced her record deal with Universal Music Group and exit from Mavin Records.
