Thomas Muller announces his retirement from international football

Germany legend Thomas Muller has today announced his retirement from international football, ending his trophy-laden 14-year stint.

The forward brought an illustrious chapter to a close at Euro 2024 with his last match proving to be his country’s quarter-final knockout by champions Spain.

Muller broke down in tears after the final whistle and it has now been confirmed that the game, which also marked his 131st cap, will be his last for Die Mannschaft.

The 34-year-old scored 45 goals in total for Germany and was part of their World Cup squad in 2010, his first major tournament, and 2014. He memorably won the Golden Boot in South Africa and was also named the Best Young Player.

Muller confirmed his sole focus will now be on his club in a YouTube video.

‘When I was able to play my first international match in the German national team 14 years ago, I could not have dreamed of this,’ he told viewers.

‘Great victories and bitter defeats. To stand up against the best, alongside fantastic teammates with whom I have experienced unforgettable moments.

‘Feeling your affection on the pitch, it always made me very proud to play for my country. We celebrated together and sometimes shed a tear together. I would like to say thank you to all the fans and teammates of the national team.

‘Thank you for your support over the years. Keep your enthusiasm for the team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. That’s what I’m doing now as a fan in the stands and no longer as a player on the pitch. Goodbye.’

Muller is Germany’s third-most capped player, behind only Lothar Matthaus (150 caps) and Miroslav Klose (137), and is their joint sixth top scorer.

He made his international debut against Argentina in March 2010, aged 20, and regularly featured at tournaments before dropping out of the picture under Joachim Low between 2019 and 2021.

Muller was restored to the squad ahead of Euro 2020.

The veteran made two appearances from the bench at Euro 2024.
