Introduction
Sometimes we are tempted to disregard the significance of names, but names are very important and reveal who the bearer of the name is. In our various ethnic groups and homes we make every effort to give names which reveal who the bearer of the name is – names which we think will shape the character of the people to whom the name is given. So we hear of Dzigbodi, Adom, Tsemafo and titles, such as Kasablofo, Odenoho, Katakyie, Osagyefo, Otumfuo to mention a few.
In the Bible names are extremely important because we get to know who people are by their given names. So too can we get to know the Holy Spirit better as we know His given names and titles since these give us a greater understanding of His true nature.
These 13 titles ascribed to Him provide much insight into His true nature. He is called:
- The Spirit of God – “Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives inyou?’’ – 1 Corinthians 3:16
- The Spirit of Christ – But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)– Romans 8:9
- The Eternal Spirit – Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered Himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. – Hebrews 9:14
- The Spirit of Truth – When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future. – John 16:13
- The Spirit of Grace – Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? – Hebrews 10:29
- The Spirit of Glory – If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of Godrests upon you – 1 Peter 4:14
- The Spirit of Life – And because you belong to Him, the powerof the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. – Romans 8:2
- The Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation – I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spiritof wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. – Ephesians 1:17
- The Spirit of Promise – On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. – Acts 1:4
- The Comforter – But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you – John 14:26
- The Spirit of Adoption – For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father. – Romans 8:15
- The Spirit of Holiness – and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in powerby His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. – Romans 1:4.
- The Spirit of Faith – It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak – 2 Corinthians 4:13
Endnote:
Let us give glory to our God who loves us so much that He has made His home in our hearts by His Holy Spirit and let us yield to Him so that He will daily guide, direct, teach, counsel and empower us to live the transformed lives He has given us.
