Taxi Driver Faces Court for Negligent Driving Leading to Pedestrian’s Death

Dansoman Circuit Court has granted bail to Richard Essifie, a taxi driver accused of careless and inconsiderate driving, as well as negligently causing harm leading to the death of a pedestrian.

Essifie was presented to the court yesterday and admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢30,000 with three sureties, all of whom must be public servants earning not less than GH¢2,000 and residing within the court’s jurisdiction.

He was also ordered to deposit his Ghana Card with the court registry and report to the police station once every two weeks. The case has been adjourned to April 30, 2025.

Details

The prosecution, led by Inspector Esther Mensah, stated that on February 15, 2025, at about 4:35 a.m., Essifie was driving a Daewoo Matiz taxi with registration number AS 890-19 along General Acheampong High Street in Accra.

Upon reaching Biggies Pub, he allegedly failed to exercise due care and attention, resulting in his vehicle hitting a pedestrian, Francis Yaw Osei, 52, who was crossing the road.

Osei sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward, where he later died.

His body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

The accident also caused damage to the vehicle. The case was heard by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.
