A twenty-eight years old Senior High School (SHS) graduate from Akrofuom, Tawia Joseph Ayaaba, emerged the Overall Best Farmer at this year’s Farmers Day celebration in the Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region held at Brofoyedru.
Elated Ayaaba, speaking to the media, urged the youth to shun illegal mining and venture into agriculture to improve their lot.
He noted that the youth of today had a lot to gain if they stayed focused and went into agriculture.
Speaking at the programme, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Maurice Jonas Woode, congratulated the 13 award winners for making the district proud by their achievements.
He said the district had, as of August 2022, received and distributed 65,000 oil palm seedlings from the Mineral Development Fund to support the Planting For Export and Rural Development (PERD) initiative.
He added that the Assembly had given out 14,000 coconut seedling to farmers to plant, as the district plans to have a coconut processing factory in future.
Also, he said, the district was blessed with large tracts of lands suitable for rice cultivation, and encouraged farmers to venture into rice cultivation to feed themselves and the rest of Ghanaians.
The District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Richard Nyamekye, on his part, said the Extension Delivery Service of the Ministry of Agriculture had been very effective in the district, as farmers had benefited from agriculture agents through the facilitation and education of effective agricultural technologies.
