Senior Police Officers Admit Voices On Tape … Bugri Naabu tells media after in-camera hearing

The former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chief Bugri Naabu has stated that he never regretted taping the conversation he had with the three senior police officers, in what has become known as the ‘Leaked IGP Tape.’

According to him, it is dangerous for this to be happening in the police service, which is why he recorded them and surrendered it to the president.

Chief Bugri Naabu disclosed this during an interview with journalists yesterday, after the committee’s in-camera hearing.

He added that, when the tape he handed over to the parliamentary committee, headed by Mr Atta-Akyea, was played to the hearing of the witnesses present, all the three senior police officers identified and admitted the voices to be theirs.

The Chief continued that, for him, it has cleared his name and affirmed his earlier position that chiefs do not tell lies. Chief Naabu stressed on the need for him to air the tape on both radio and television, should it become necessary.

A Parliamentary Select Committee is presently investigating the ‘IGP Leaked Tape’ scandal, in which three senior police officers were allegedly caught on tape planning how to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare from office, before the 2024 general elections.

Below is a transcript of the said interview he granted to the media;
Chief Bugri Naabu: Good morning journalists. You came for the sitting today. Yesterday, we met the committee again. You were there the other time when COP Mensah, Superintendents Asare and Gyebi denied that they never talked to me on phone. Yesterday they confessed.

I presented the tape and the committee has the tape with them now. They played it and they said yes, it is true. I want the committee to say it, but said when they conclude before they will come out.

As a Chief, we don’t tell lies, after all, I didn’t beg them to come and say it. It is very important for state secret.

For NPP government to have that kind of thing going round in the police is dangerous.
That’s why I taped it to give to the president. It is never doctored, knew their voice, they admitted. I want to clear my name. No regret, won’t regret, what they say is serious.
Gyebi also admitted. Thank you.
