Race for Manhyia South seat gathers momentum, as Napo’s brother seeks to replace him

Four days from today, a new face would occupy the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manhyia South aspiring parliamentary candidate seat for the 2024 election, to replace Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, who has been selected as the running mate for the NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh has since 2009 been the Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South Constituency (formerly Manhyia Constituency).

Five names have cropped up as potential aspirants and they have picked nomination forms to that effect.

They are Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour, James Boakye, Mr. Kwasi Coker Gyambibi and Kwabena Amankwa Antwi.

Consequently, the NPP has initiated the nomination process to find a replacement for the Member of Parliament, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, following his selection as the running mate.

The party has enacted comprehensive rules and regulations aimed at governing the conduct of the forthcoming parliamentary primary election.

According to the party’s statement, nominations for aspiring parliamentary candidates will begin on Monday, July 8, 2024 with a deadline for submission set for Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
All aspiring candidates are to pick up their nomination forms after paying a non-refundable application fee of GH₵3,000 in a banker’s draft, payable to the NPP National Headquarters in Accra.
The aspiring candidates are also required to pay a non-refundable filing fee of GH₵35,000 in a banker’s draft to ensure full compliance with the nomination procedures.

The party has, however, granted candidates who are women and persons living with disabilities a 50% rebate on the filing fees. They will pay a non-refundable fee of GH₵17,500.
The Elections Committee (EC) designated to oversee the electoral process comprises seven key persons; including Chairperson Danquah Smith Butey, Vice Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako and Secretary Evans Nimako, among others.

Come Sunday, July 14, 2024 the 600 delegates would decide which of the five aspirants would be the perfect replacement for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

The Chronicle has gathered that Manhyia South delegates are feverishly rooting for Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, brother of Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the Manhyia South Constituency Treasurer.

Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, 45, who enjoys massive support of the delegates, is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, ICAG (Ghana), Chartered Institute of Management Accountant, CIMA (UK) and ACMA/CGMA.

He is a product of Prempeh College (1989-1996) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (1999-2002) – Bachelor of Arts (HONS) Law & Sociology, as well as the London School of Accountancy & Management (UK) (2006-2010), University of Westminster (London), European School of Business (CERAM), Sophia Antipolis (France) – (Dual Master’s Degree Programme with a semester abroad) (2004-2005) MSc International Finance

He has had a stint of work  experiences at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation as Manager, Institutional Reporting (December 2023 to May 2024)  and Manager, Corporate Finance (May 2024 to date)  having previously served  as Principal Accounts Officer (October 2018 to December 2023)

Nana Owusu  Afriyie Prempeh has  also  worked  with the Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited as Treasury Officer, (August 2018 to 15th October 2018); The Royal Bank Limited, Ghana; Assistant Vice President, (April 2013 to August 2018) and Investpro Ghana Limited, Ghana; Investment Officer (May 2011- December 2012).

Other work experience include; Assistant Accountant at the UK Star Group, London (January 2010 – April 2011), Health and Safety Officer at the Showforce UK Ltd, London; (2006-2008).

The aspirant has also served at the Manhyia Palace Secretariat as the Administrative Assistant (2003-2004) and served his National service at the Manhyia Palace Museum between 1997 and 1999.
