A pressure group by the name, Concerned Youth Association of Asante Akyem North Constituency, has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to strengthen security in the area, ahead of the December 7 general elections.
At a press conference held in Accra on Friday, November 16, 2024 the group expressed concerns over alleged intimidating tactics targeting Independent parliamentary candidate, Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
The group warned that tensions are rising in the constituency, historically known for peaceful elections.
“Asante Akyem North has always had free, fair and peaceful elections. But with the way tensions are escalating, we urge the IGP to intervene quickly to ensure peace and order,” said Samuel Osei Bonsu, Greater Accra branch chairman of the Concerned Youth.
Mr. Bonsu said their candidate’s popularity, due to his provision of development infrastructure in the area, has resulted in his campaign team facing “incessant attacks”, and emphasised the need for security to protect him.
The Asante Akyem North parliamentary race features three main candidates: Lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Asamoah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Independent candidate Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
Tensions reportedly flared late Tuesday when, according to Mr. Bonsu, one of their opponent’s campaign team allegedly attacked Frimpong’s supporters in Brantuo, Agogo, leading to a police report.
Adding to the allegations, Alfred Kwasi Agyei, an executive member of the Concerned Youth presented audio evidence, pointing fingers at certain individuals in government.
The Concerned Youth Association urged the authorities to ensure a level playing field and prioritise peace.
“We call on the authorities to act swiftly to provide adequate security for all candidates, as peace is paramount in the upcoming elections,” Mr Bonsu stated.
