Police Reject GH¢150,000 Bribe, Seize 713 Slabs of Suspected Narcotic Drugs at Asanso

Personnel of the Ghana Police Service have once again demonstrated high moral integrity and professionalism after rejecting a GH¢150,000 bribe from an alleged narcotic drug trafficker at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command, as part of efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking, arrested a suspect and retrieved seven hundred and thirteen (713) slabs of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs during an operation in the area.

The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, a driver, was arrested on January 26, 2026, when a police team on snap-check duty intercepted a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus, with registration number AC 718-25, at the Asanso checkpoint.

A search conducted on the vehicle uncovered nine nylon sacks concealed in the bus. The sacks, which contained dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, were opened and found to hold a total of 713 compressed slabs of the substance.

Police said that during the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with GH¢150,000, an offer which was firmly declined by the personnel.

The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other persons connected to the offence.

The Ghana Police Service has commended the officers involved for their professionalism and reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and related crimes across the country.
