Police officers in alleged bullion van robbery denied bail

The Accra Circuit Court ‘10’, presided over by Evelyn Asamoah, has denied the four police officers charged with attempt to commit robbery and abetment bail.

The bail application was denied following attempts made by their defence counsel, particularly Justin Teriwajah, who has constantly maintained that prosecution often prayed the court to remand the accused persons, as a mean of punishment.

He argued that the accused persons – Constable Yaro Affisu Ibrahim (A1), Constable Albert Ofosu (A2), Constable Richard Boasu (A3) and Constable Rabiu Jambedu (A4) – had been on remand for almost two month without the prosecution adducing any fresh evidence.

The accused persons are being tried on the allegation of being involved in multiple bullion van robberies recorded in Accra.

Mr. Teriwajah told the court yesterday that the accused persons had people of substance, who were ready to stand in surety for them, and assured the court that the accused person were also not flight risks.

The prosecuting officer, Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP) Sylvester Asare, rebutted the claims of the counsel, and indicated what Mr. Teriwajah said that prosecution uses remand to punish the accused persons as not grounded in law.

He added that the accused persons were flight risks, since they were not fully fledged police officers, and were all still on probation, explaining that the accused persons were flight risks because they were being tried at another court on different charges.

The court heard the prosecution’s prayer and adjourned the case to May 17, 2022.
