Police Officer Remanded for Allegedly Killing Civilian

Smith Gyekyi, a 25-year-old police officer, appeared before the Kaneshie Magistrate Court on charges of murder and was remanded into police custody after the case details were presented by Chief Inspector Achana. He is scheduled to reappear in court on September 9.

The case is being overseen by Magistrate Ama Adomako Kwakye, who remanded Gyekyi, without taking a plea, as this is a committal trial.

The incident in question occurred on August 18, 2024 at approximately 4:00 a.m.

According to police reports, a male adult, later identified as Stanley Ahadzi, was found shot dead at the Koans Estate frontage at Satellite.

OSP/Mr. Adamu Muniru, AdjenKotoku Crime Officer and ASP/Madam Agnes Aboagye, the Night Monitoring Officer and Investigator D/PW/Inspr. Leticia Asiedu responded to the scene, discovering Ahadzi’s body in a supine position, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Further investigation revealed that Gyekyi, who was driving a commercial Matiz car with registration GW 5459-21, had picked up Esther Owusua from Ablekuma Joma earlier that night.

When Owusua lost her way, she contacted Ahadzi to meet them at the Koans Estate gate.

Upon arrival, a dispute over the fare ensued between the accused and Ahadzi.

The argument escalated, leading Gyekyi to pull his sidearm. After a warning shot, he shot Ahadzi, resulting in his death.

Gyekyi subsequently reported himself at the Amasaman Divisional Police Station, where he was arrested. He admitted to the crime during the investigation.
