Police arrest six suspects for unlawful possession of firearms, street robbery

The Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested two persons, Acheampong Kwadwo, 21, and James Antwi Adjei, 24, for unlawful possession of firearms.

The arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation conducted in the early hours of Tuesday, July 9, 2025 at known hideouts at Nweneso, Trabuom and Nkwawie.

The police recovered two pump-action shotguns, one with serial number ASAO 2164 2021 and the other without a serial number during the said operation.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police, Godwin Ahianyo, both firearms are suspected to be stolen and might have been intended for use in robbery operations across the Atwima Districts and the Greater Kumasi area.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations, while the recovered firearms have been retained as exhibits for evidential purposes.

Two other suspects, Yaw Adu and Samando Dokurugu, alias Shapichino, were earlier this year arrested for unlawful possession of arms and ammunition at Ahenkro in the Ashanti Region.

A search conducted on them led to the retrieval of one Adler Tulpar pump-action shotgun with serial number 24SA-1073 and three live BB cartridges.

In another development, the Suntreso District Police Command has apprehended two persons, Issah Abdul, 22 and Abdul Rahman, 20, in connection with a street robbery that occurred on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at approximately 5:45 am at Alignment, Kwadaso Estate in Kumasi.

Godwin Ahianyo, in a press statement disclosed that the suspects, riding an unregistered blue Royal motorbike, accosted a victim who was on her way out.

He stated that one of the suspects, armed with a machete, forcibly robbed her of a handbag containing a Samsung smartphone valued at GHC2,000 and other personal belongings.

During the robbery, one of the suspects inadvertently dropped his Samsung mobile phone, which the victim retrieved and handed over to the police as evidence.

He indicated that following a swift intelligence-led operations, the suspects were traced and arrested at Sofoline, where the police found the unregistered motorbike in their possession.

A search conducted on them revealed four assorted mobile phones and cash amounting to GHC1,690.

The suspects admitted to the offence and led police investigators to Suame Magazine, where the machete used in the robbery was concealed.

The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations. Exhibits retained by the police include five assorted Mobile Phones, one unregistered Royal Motorbike, one Machete and Cash amount of GHC 1,690.00.

He said an application will be made to the court to seek remand of the suspects for a subsequent identification parade to be conducted to enable other possible victims of similar robberies to identify the suspects.

The police commended the victim’s swift action in reporting the incident and providing crucial evidence, which aided in the arrest of the suspects.

The police also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to aid in maintaining law and order.

Meanwhile, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) reports that a Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced two persons to 15 years’ imprisonment each in hard labour for robbery and related offences.

 

The convicts, Abass Kasim, 26, and Daniel Morro, alias “China”, 25, denied charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, unlawful entry, abetment of crime and possession of firearms without authority.

A statement issued by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Atsu Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs at the Ashanti Regional Police Command, said the Court ordered that all sentences run concurrently.

DSP Ahianyo said the gang attacked a resident of Atonsu Kuwait, Kumasi, on July 31, 2021 at about 02:30 hours, wielding a pistol and cutlasses.

They shot the victim in the abdomen, inflicted multiple cutlass wounds and robbed him of personal belongings.

Stolen items included; an iPhone 1 valued at GHS5,500 – a Samsung phone worth GHS500 – two Apple wristwatches valued at GHS3,000 – two M.K. ladies’ handbags, an unspecified quantity of jewellery, 600 US Dollars and an undisclosed amount of Cedis.

Following investigations, Kasim was arrested on August 12, 2021. He admitted involvement and led police to Morro’s arrest, where a pistol used in the attack was retrieved.

“On Thursday, August 19, 2021 they were arraigned before Kumasi Circuit Court Four, where they were initially remanded into custody after pleading not guilty,” the statement said.

After prolonged proceedings, the two were convicted on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 and sentenced to 15 years on each count.

They have since been transferred to the Central Prisons in Kumasi to begin serving their sentences.
