Mrs Patricia Nuamah, a 49 -year-old vegetable farmer from Adaase, in the Obuasi Municipality, has been adjudged the 2024 Obuasi Municipal Best Farmer at the 40th National Farmers’ Day celebration.
Mrs Nuamah received AngloGold Ashanti’s sponsored 40-inch LED TV, a Tricycle (Aboboyaa), two Wellington boots, 12 pieces of GTP wax print, one box of Key soap, two knapsack sprayers, machetes, one box of Sunphosate Glyphosate weedicide and one brush cutter.
Mrs. Nuamah attributed her success to strictly following the instructions of the Agricultural extension officers.
She expressed the hope that the award would serve as a motivation for more women to develop interest in Agriculture.
Godfred Nsowah of Mamiriwa No. 2 was the first runner up, whilst the Best woman farmer went to Grace Bannor of Mamiriwa No.1.
The best youth farmer award was won by David Antwi of Adaase.
Mr Kwaku Kwarteng, Member of Parliament for Obuasi West commended farmers in the Obuasi Municipality for their contributions towards food security and general economic development.
He lauded Mrs. Patricia Nuamah for winning the overall Best Farmer award to motivate more women to venture into agriculture.
The MP also expressed the need for a concerted effort to fight galamsey and protect farm lands to help food security.
According to him, the devastating impact of galamsey on farmlands and water bodies has been a subject of media discussion in recent times, with most people blaming the surge on the lack of political will by the government to fight it.
He stressed that winning the war against illegal mining (galamsey) requires collective efforts from our chiefs, media, courts and security institutions.
Mr. Elijah Adansi-Bonah, the Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi also called for collective action and collaboration among all stakeholders in the food and agriculture sector, including Farmers, Fisher folks, Researchers, Extension Agents, Policy makers, Private Sector, Civil Society and Consumers.
From Hweebaa in the Ahafo Ano South West District in the Ashanti region, 47-year-old Alidu Idrisu Jamar was adjudged the overall Best Farmer.
Mr. Alidu Idrisu is a Junior High School leaver and married with 7 children. He has three acres of Palm Oil farm, 10 acres of Cassava farm, 10 acres of Cocoa farm, 10 goats, 25 cows, 15 sheep, 19 local birds and 10 acres of Plantain farm.
