Okyeame Kwame (r) endorses King Paluta

Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur Okyeame Kwame has endorsed King Paluta as Artiste of the Year.

In a Facebook post, Okyeame wrote: “Artiste of the year. Signed sealed delivered. And he is wearing the love equation by ok. Medaase.”

Although he didn’t add any award scheme to the post, it has stoked conversations about who deserves to win the Artiste of the Year slot in the forthcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

Some people have argued that King Paluta’s visibility and hard work in the year under review (2024) towers over any other musician in Ghana. Their argument is premised on the fact that he released three smash hit songs: Aseda, Makoma, Pop Champagne, an album and appeared on many high profile concerts in Ghana and abroad.

Meanwhile, a section of music lovers are also rooting for King Promise, who was a huge contender for the slot last year.

Apart from these two artistes, Stonebwoy’s work in 2024 has been acknowledged by some music stakeholders as impressive. They believe that the Bhim Nation President deserves to win Artiste of the Year award again.

Israel deploys tanks as assault on occupied West Bank intensifies

Israel deploys tanks

The Israeli military has launched several new raids across the occupied West Bank, intensifying a monthlong operation that has killed hundreds of people and displaced thousands.

During the raids on Sunday and into Monday, Israeli tanks were deployed in the occupied Palestinian territory for the first time in more than two decades.

Reports that the army is planning to open up military corridors in the West Bank suggested an extended and expanded campaign.

Israeli raids hit areas across the West Bank as bulldozers and armoured vehicles continued to pound Jenin and Tulkarem, where large refugee camps are located.

Soldiers were reported to have stormed Jenin from the west, besieging the refugee camp and the areas adjacent to it.

They also imposed a curfew in the town of Qabatiya to the south for a second straight day and stormed the nearby towns of al-Yamoun and Burqin.

The al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, reported on Telegram that it was fighting with Israeli forces in Jenin.

Hamas, the Palestinian Authority, neighbouring Jordan and the Arab League called on Monday for a halt to the intensifying attacks.

Brazil also urged a full suspension of Israeli military attacks and unimpeded international aid access to the occupied territory.

Key US agencies tell staff not to answer Elon Musk email on what they did last week

Elon Musk

Key US departments within the Trump administration have told staff not to comply with a Saturday email from Elon Musk’s cost-cutting initiative asking what they accomplished in the past week.

The FBI, state department and Pentagon were among agencies that instructed employees not to answer the message. Other department heads advised staff to comply, while some told workers to wait for further guidance before responding.

Musk said failure to respond by Monday at midnight would be interpreted as the employee resigning. President Donald Trump has yet to comment on the email.

The conflicting guidance caused confusion for hundreds of thousands of government bureaucrats as Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) task force leads an outside effort to aggressively reduce government spending.

The message sent to millions of federal employees on Saturday evening came after Musk posted on his social media platform X that government staff would “shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week”.

In a copy of the email obtained by the BBC, employees were asked to respond explaining their accomplishments from the past week in five bullet points – without disclosing classified information.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the federal government’s human resources agency, confirmed the email was authentic.

The message did not mention whether declining to comply could affect employment status, despite Musk’s social media assertion that “failure to respond will be taken as a resignation”.

NZ minister resigns after he ‘placed hand’ on staff’s arm

New Zealand's commerce minister Andrew Bayly

New Zealand’s commerce minister Andrew Bayly has resigned as a government minister after he “placed a hand” on a staff member’s upper arm last week, in what he described as “overbearing” behaviour. Bayly said on Monday that he was “deeply sorry” about the incident, which he described as not an argument but an “animated discussion”.

He remains a member of parliament. His resignation comes after he was criticised last October for calling a winery worker a “loser”- including putting his fingers in an ‘L’ shape on his forehead – and allegedly using an expletive directed at them. He later issued a public apology.

“As many of you know, I have been impatient to drive change in my ministerial portfolios,” Bayly said in a statement announcing his resignation.

“Last week I had an animated discussion with a staff member about work. I took the discussion too far, and I placed a hand on their upper arm, which was inappropriate.”

He said a complaint had been made but would not elaborate further on exactly what had happened.

Bayly resigned last Friday, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon later told a press conference, adding that the incident happened three days earlier, on 18 February.

Luxon said on Monday the government’s handling the issue within a week was “pretty quick” and “pretty impressive”. He denied that he should have asked Bayly to step down following October’s winery incident, and said “never say never” when asked if there was a way back for the 63-year-old into another cabinet position.

New German leader signals seismic shift in trans-atlantic relations

0
Friedrich Merz, Germany's chancellor-in-waiting

Germany’s chancellor-in-waiting didn’t wait for the final results of his country’s election on Sunday to herald a new era in Europe.

Declaring the US indifferent to this continent’s fate, Friedrich Merz questioned the future of Nato and demanded Europe boost its own defences. Quickly.

This tone from the close US ally – and from Friedrich Merz who is known to be a passionate Atlanticist – would have been unimaginable even a couple of months ago.

It’s a seismic shift. That may read like hyperbole, but what we are now experiencing in terms of transatlantic relations is unprecedented in the 80 years since the end of World War Two.

Big European powers have been shocked to the core by the Trump administration, which suggests it could revoke the security guarantees to Europe in place since 1945.

“I would never have thought that I would have to say something like this in a TV show but, after Donald Trump’s remarks last week… it is clear that this government does not care much about the fate of Europe,” Friedrich Merz said during a post-election debate on Sunday.

“My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA,” he added.

Merz hinted that the endeavour was so urgent that he was not sure on whether the transatlantic alliance leaders gathering for a summit in June “would still be talking about Nato in its current form or whether we will have to establish an independent European defence capability much more quickly”.

ADT Transport appeals to Government for compensation

Richard Karikari addressing the media

Ali Djamongue Tantom (ADT) Transport Company Limited has appealed to the government to compensate its management, following the burning of one of its buses with registration number GR 7501-21 at Loogri-Walewale, North East Region, on Friday, February 14, 2025.

Mr. Richard Karikari, Manager, ADT Transport while addressing the media on Monday indicated that transport operators would have to stop plying that route, if the government cannot protect them.

Mr. Karikari appealed to the government to come to their aid because government officials help traders when markets get burnt, as well as the apprehension of the culprits to bear the cost of the bus, which he disclosed is worth GHC1,100,000 (inclusive of duties).

Mr. Richard Karikari disclosed that they (A.D.T) cannot give the government any timeframe to come to their aid, but are appealing to government to help them recover their burnt bus, or they will advise themselves as a company.

ADT Transport Company Limited, a commercial transportation company, which has been in existence for the past 7 years, with 15 buses, plies the Kumasi to Widana Pulimakom route.

He linked the burning of the bus and the resultant death of five people (four burnt and one shot), one person is in critical condition at Tamale Teaching Hospital, to the ongoing Chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.

He explained that the said bus, loaded with 45 passengers and other valuables, was en route from Pulimakom to Kumasi, but developed a mechanical fault, for which the bus parked at a police barrier at Loogri-Walewale for repairs.

Mr. Karikari, referring to eyewitness accounts, said a man came over to say “he needs a Kusasi lady to marry”, but the passengers answered there is no Kusasi among them.

He said 20 minutes after the man had left eight motorbikes, each carrying two gunmen approached them and shot indiscriminately, killing one and setting the bus ablaze.

The Manager stressed that what happened on that fateful day is very appalling, because most of their clients are foreigners (Togolese and Burkinabes), who are among the dead and injured.

Mr. Karikari noted that though the Ghana Police Service used to assign a personnel (not in uniform) to a bus en route, it ceased due to the conflict, which started October last year, but a police patrol car served as an escort for the buses that ply the route.

Nkawie Forestry Division Confiscates 15 excavators in Offinso Shelter Belt

The Nkawie Forestry Division has confiscated about 15 excavators being used for illegal mining in the Offin Shelter Belt Forest Reserve in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti region.

It follows a tip-off that excavators had been deployed into the Nkawie Forest Reserve to continue the very activities the government is working tirelessly to halt at Nkawie/Anwiafutu areas.

Armah Kofi Buah, Ashanti Regional Minister and with
security personnel at Offinso Shelter Belt Forest Reserves

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, in a follow up with the Ashanti Regional Minister, Security and Forestry personnel, visited the area to familiarise himself with the situation on the ground, in a bid to save the Forests and Water bodies.

He condemned the illegal operations and described it as environmental vandalism of the highest order, saying it is a crime against nature and humanity.

He stated that with the unwavering support of Dr. Omane Boamah, the Defence Minister and Dr. Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister who deployed the military to the forests to clamp down on the illegal operations, they will continue to fight against the illegality.

He indicated that they have also arrested seven Chinese nationals and eight Ghanaians who were mining illegally on the River Ankobra last weekend.

According to him, investigations are ongoing and working closely with the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The devastated Offinso Shelter Belt Forest Reserves by illegal Miners

The Minister noted that the galamsey menace is not just a threat, but it is an existential crisis that undermines the very foundation of our environment, health and future, and noted that government cannot win the battle alone.

He said his ministry, in collaboration with key agencies, especially the Forestry Commission, Minerals Commission and the support of allied ministries, is ensuring that their efforts are coordinated to address the devastating crisis.

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister cautioned that armed miners will not be tolerated and vowed to decentralise the fight, emphasising that legal mining pathways exist, but illegal activities in forest reserves will not be permitted.

The Minister also cautioned bank rollers of illegal mining activities and those who attack journalists in their line of duty.

Natural Treatment Tips for Colds and Flu

0

Looking for a natural or alternative treatment for your cold or flu symptoms? Here are tips that may help relieve your symptoms.

  1. Know When Not to Treat Symptoms

Believe it or not, those annoying symptoms you’re feeling are part of the natural healing process—evidence that the immune system is battling illness. For instance, a fever is your body’s way of trying to kill viruses by creating a hotter-than-normal environment. Also, a fever’s hot environment makes germ-killing proteins in your blood circulate more quickly and effectively. So if you endure a moderate fever for a day or two, you may actually get well faster.

Coughing is another productive symptom; it clears your breathing passages of thick mucus that can carry germs to your lungs and the rest of your body.

Even that stuffy nose is best treated mildly or not at all. A decongestant, such as pseudoephedrine, restricts flow to the blood vessels in your nose and throat. But often you want the increased blood flow because it warms the infected area and helps secretions carry germs out of your body.

  1. Blow Your Nose Often (and the Right Way)

It’s important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your head. But when you blow hard, pressure can carry germ-carrying phlegm back into your ear passages, causing earache. The best way to blow your nose: press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear the other.

  1. Treat That Stuffy Nose With Warm Salt Water

Salt-water rinsing helps break up nasal congestion while also removing virus particles and bacteria from your nose. Here’s a popular recipe:

Mix 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 8 ounces of distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water. Use a bulb syringe or nasal irrigation kit to squirt water into the nose. Hold one nostril closed by applying light finger pressure while squirting the salt mixture into the other nostril. Let it drain. Repeat two to three times, then treat the other nostril.

  1. Stay Warm and Rested

Staying warm and resting when you first come down with a cold or the flu helps your body direct its energy toward the immune battle. This battle taxes the body, so give it a little help by resting.

  1. Gargle

Gargling can moisten a sore throat and bring temporary relief. Gargle with half a teaspoon of salt dissolved in 8 ounces of warm water, four times daily.

To reduce the tickle in your throat, try an astringent gargle, such as tea that contains tannin, to tighten the membranes. Or use a thick, viscous gargle made with honey or honey mixed with apple cider vinegar. Steep one tablespoon of raspberry leaves or lemon juice in two cups of hot water; mix with one teaspoon of honey. Let the mixture cool to room temperature before gargling.

  1. Drink Hot Liquids

You need to drink lots of liquids when you’re sick with a cold or the flu to keep you from getting dehydrated and to help loosen mucus. Hot liquids such as tea or the old standby, chicken soup, are particularly good for relieving nasal congestion and soothing the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat.

  1. Take a Steamy Shower

The warmth and humidity from a steamy shower can moisturize your nasal passages and may help you relax. If you’re dizzy from the flu, run a steamy shower while you sit on a chair nearby and take a sponge bath. A cool mist vaporizer near your bed or the couch has a similar effect.

  1. Use a Salve Under Your Nose

A small dab of mentholated salve under your nose can help open breathing passages and soothe the irritated skin at the base of the nose. Menthol, eucalyptus, and camphor all have mild numbing ingredients that may help relieve the pain of a nose rubbed raw. However, only put it on the outside or under your nose, not inside your nose.

  1. Apply Hot or Cold Packs Around Your Congested Sinuses

Either temperature works. You can buy reusable hot or cold packs at a drugstore or make your own. You can apply heat by taking a damp washcloth and heating it for 55 seconds in a microwave (test the temperature first to make sure it’s not too hot.) A small bag of frozen peas works well as a cold pack.

  1. Sleep With an Extra Pillow Under Your Head

Elevating your head will help relieve congested nasal passages. If the angle is too awkward, try placing the pillows between the mattress and the box springs to create a more gradual slope.

  1. Don’t Fly Unless Necessary

There’s no point adding stress to your already stressed-out upper respiratory system, and that’s what the change in air pressure will do. Flying with cold or flu congestion can temporarily damage your eardrums as a result of pressure changes during takeoff and landing. If you must fly, use a decongestant and carry a nasal spray with you to use just before takeoff and landing. Chewing gum and swallowing frequently can also help relieve pressure.

  1. Keep It to Yourself

While you’re taking care of yourself, also take care not to spread your cold and flu germs to other people. Cover your mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze. And wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you can’t get to a sink, rub your hands thoroughly with an alcohol-based sanitizer.

Remember, serious conditions, such as sinus infections, bronchitis, meningitis, strep throat, and asthma, can look like the common cold. If you have serious symptoms or don’t seem to be getting better, call your doctor.
