Why I appointed Sule Lamido as Nigeria’s foreign minister -Obasanjo

0
Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo

Nigeria’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has explained why he picked the ex-governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, as the country’s foreign affairs minister in 1999.

Obasanjo said the choice of Lamido as foreign affairs minister became his responsibility because the person who had been anointed to assume the position was close to the former governor.

He disclosed this in his speech as Special Guest of Honour at the launch of Lamido’s book, ‘Be True to Yourself,’ in Abuja on Tuesday.

Obasanjo said Lamido has characteristics which he admired.

According to him, Lamido was one of his ministers who could speak truth to power.

“And when we settled, we decided that my candidate would be the vice president and the chairman’s candidate would be the foreign minister. But then, the chairman’s candidate, who we agreed to be the foreign minister, declined.

“And then, the choice of Lamido as foreign minister became my responsibility. Because I saw him as the closest, or one of the closest, persons to the person who had declined to be the foreign minister.

“Sule Lamido has admirable character, and I admire him. When I appointed the ministers—because I did not want a situation where the minister would do something wrong and I would want to say, “Look, Mr. Minister, thank you, you can go,” and there would be a problem—I said all my ministers should give me undated letters of resignation. Sule Lamido came to me and said, “You appointed me, and I did not ask you to appoint me. You think I will fall?” I acceded to his request. And of course, he didn’t have to give me a letter of resignation, and I had no cause to ask him to give a letter of resignation,” he stated.

In his remarks, Lamido hailed Obasanjo and other dignitaries present at the event.

Governor Ademola Adeleke

Members of the Osun State House of Assembly have unanimously passed a vote of confidence, endorsing Governor Ademola Adeleke for a second term ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial election in the state.

The motion for the vote of confidence was initiated by Adewumi Adeyemi, representing the Obokun State Constituency and seconded by Taofiq Olayiwola from Ede South State Constituency.

The endorsement was made during a plenary session on Tuesday, where the 26-member Assembly, comprised of 25 members from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and one from the All Progressives Congress, APC, expressed their full support for the governor.

Presiding over the session, Speaker, Adewale Egbedun praised the governor’s achievements in celebration of his 65th birthday.

Alleged fraud: Ganduje to face prosecution as court rejects APC chair’s bid to stop trial

National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje

A Kano State High Court has assumed jurisdiction against the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, after rejecting his application for the dismissal of multi-billion naira fraud charges filed against him by the Kano State government.

The court dismissed the application filed by the Ganduje and seven others challenging the court’s jurisdiction to hear the case

The Kano State government had instituted an 11-count charge bordering on bribery, conspiracy, misappropriation and diversion of public funds running into billions of naira against Ganduje and his wife, Hafsat Umar, and others.

The other accused persons are Abubakar Bawuro, Umar Abdullahi Umar, Jibrilla Muhammad, Lamash Properties Limited, Safari Textiles Limited, and Lasage General Enterprises Limited.

The presiding judge, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, on Tuesday, in her ruling, dismissed the defendants’ preliminary objections, describing them as incompetent and citing relevant legal authorities.

The judge held that the charges filed on May 13, 2024 against the defendants are competent to be tried.

Justice Aliyu affirmed that the power to investigate does not only lie with the police, noting that the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption is also empowered to investigate criminal issues.

“The case should proceed to trial even in the absence of Ganduje and six others,” the judge ruled.

She also summoned the sixth defendant, Lamash Properties Limited, and adjourned the matter to July 30 and July 31 for hearing.

Boko Haram: Senate Asks Military To Deploy Troops To Borno, Yobe

The Senate on Tuesday asked the military to urgently redeploy personnel and advanced equipment to Borno and Yobe states, following a resurgence of attacks by Boko Haram terrorists in the areas.

The resolution followed renewed insurgent attacks in the North-East region, including the killing of over a dozen soldiers in Marte town of the Monguno Local Government Area on Monday, May 12, and a subsequent assault early Tuesday on Gajiram, the headquarters of the Nganzai Local Government Area.

In a motion raised by the Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Munguno, lawmakers noted that while two-thirds of the local government areas in Borno were once under Boko Haram control, collaborative efforts between the Nigerian military and civilian joint task force had successfully reclaimed the territories.

The restored peace, however, had led to a relocation of the tactical command to the North-West, where the military is combating kidnapping and banditry.

Expressing concern over the militants’ evolving tactics, Munguno highlighted the use of modern technologies by the group, including drones, and an increase in the deployment of improvised explosive devices, which have led to high civilian and military casualties, disrupting transportation networks.

The Senate subsequently resolved to urge the military high command to swiftly redeploy sufficient troops to the North-East and ensure they are adequately equipped with modern technology to effectively combat the renewed threat, as well as mandate the committees on the army and air force to monitor and ensure compliance with this directive.

UK man jailed for 1986 murder acquitted after 38 years

0
Peter Sullivan has spent almost four decades behind bars

A man who has served almost 38 years in prison for the murder of a woman has had his conviction quashed by the Court of Appeal after new DNA evidence emerged.

Peter Sullivan was jailed over the 1986 killing of 21-year-old barmaid Diane Sindall, who was subjected to a frenzied sexual attack in Birkenhead, Merseyside, as she walked home from a shift.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) – the statutory body set up to investigate potential miscarriages of justice – had referred Mr Sullivan’s case back to the appeal court last year after fresh testing found a DNA profile pointing to an unknown attacker in semen samples preserved from the crime scene.

Mr Sullivan, appearing on video-link from HMP Wakefield, sobbed and held his hand over his mouth as he was told he would be released. Who is Peter Sullivan and why was he jailed?

Now aged 68, he is believed to be the victim of the longest miscarriage of justice involving a living prisoner in British legal history.

In a statement read by his solicitor, Mr Sullivan said he was “not angry, I’m not bitter”.

The statement read: “What happened to me was very wrong but does not detract that what happened was a heinous and most terrible loss of life.

“The truth shall set you free.”

Speaking after the hearing, Mr Sullivan’s sister Kim Smith said “no-one had won” and expressed sympathy for Miss Sindall’s family.

Albania’s ruling Socialists secure majority in parliamentary vote

0
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama casts his vote

Albania’s ruling Socialist Party has won the country’s parliamentary elections, according to a near-complete vote count, securing Prime Minister Edi Rama an unprecedented fourth term in office.

With about 96 percent of ballots counted, the official results on Tuesday showed the Socialist Party got 82 seats in the 140-seat parliament with 52 percent of the votes.

The opposition centre-right Democratic Party secured 51 seats with 34 percent of votes. Three other small parties will take the rest of the seats.

The threshold for entry into the assembly in Albania is one percent for parties and five percent for party alliances.

The full results are expected later on Tuesday. If confirmed, the results would be an increase from the last election, where Rama’s party won 49 percent of the vote, and would give him a majority to form a government.

The Central Election Commission, the electoral executive, has said that by law, the final results come out 48 hours after the vote ends.

The results may be delayed following a request of the opposition not to consider about 53,000 ballots mailed from the diaspora in neighbouring Greece, claiming they are manipulated.

For the first time, those in the diaspora could cast postal votes. About 195,000 mailed in their votes.

Eligible voters in Albania and abroad voted to elect 140 lawmakers for a four-year mandate in the Balkan nation. Because of mass emigration, the country of 2.4 million people has a total of nearly 3.7 million eligible voters.

Germany arrests self-declared ‘king’ and bans his extremist group

0
Self-declared king Fitzek

A self-declared “king” of Germany and three of his senior “subjects” have been arrested and their group banned for attempting to overthrow the state.

Peter Fitzek, 59, was among those arrested in morning raids across seven states on Tuesday, which involved about 800 security personnel.

The government banned their group, the Reichsbürger, or “citizens of the Reich”, which seeks to establish the Königreich Deutschland, or “Kingdom of Germany”.

Alexander Dobrindt, German’s interior minister, accused the group of attempting to “undermine the rule of law” by creating an alternative state and spreading “antisemitic conspiracy narratives to back up their supposed claim to authority”.

His ministry announced the dissolution of the group, and accused it of financing itself through “economic criminal structures”.

Fitzek, a former chef and karate instructor, calls himself “king” and identified himself to judges as “Peter the First” in a previous court case.

He had himself crowned in 2012 while dressed in ermine robes and brandishing a medieval sword. Since then he has been buying land and property across Germany.

Reichsbürgers have their own currency, flag and ID cards, and want to set up separate banking and health systems.

Fitzek claims to have thousands of followers – or “subjects”.

In an interview with the BBC in 2022 he denied having any violent intentions, but also described the German state as “destructive and sick”.

“I have no interest in being part of this fascist and satanic system,” he told the BBC’s Jenny Hill, when she visited his “kingdom” in eastern Germany.

Fitzek has repeatedly clashed with the authorities and refused to abide by German laws, often in what appears to be in a publicity-seeking manner.

I’ll only join Ukraine-Russia talks if Putin is present -Zelensky

0
Ukranian President Voloydmyr Zelensky

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky raised the stakes ahead of a potential meeting with Vladimir Putin in Turkey on Thursday by saying he wouldn’t hold talks with any Russian representative other than the president himself.

Zelensky said he would travel to Turkey after US President Donald Trump urged him to meet Putin. The Russian leader suggested direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv in the country on Thursday in response to the ceasefire-or-sanctions ultimatum given to Moscow by Kyiv’s European allies on Saturday.

Asked by CNN about the goals of the possible meeting – a summit Putin has not yet agreed to attend despite proposing it himself – Zelensky said anything other than a ceasefire agreement would be a failure.

Trump said he was open to going to Turkey, but the Kremlin has so far refused to say whether Putin – or anyone else – would go. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Putin would announce his decision in due course. “As soon as the president considers it necessary, we will announce it,” Peskov said.

Zelensky said he would not consider meeting any other Russian representatives because “everything in Russia depends” on Putin.

“So I said that on (Thursday) I will go to Turkey and I’m ready to meet Putin and an end to the war was through direct talks with him,” Zelensky told reporters at a news conference.

Zelensky also said he offered Trump the option of joining the meeting, saying the presence of the US president would “give additional impulse for Putin to fly in.”

He said earlier that his country “would appreciate” Trump’s attendance, and said he supported the US president’s call for direct talks between himself and Putin.

Doctor reveals five things people have no idea cause cancer

0
Shisha smoking

A leading oncologist has revealed the five common habits that could increase your risk of developing cancer.

Dr Mikkael Sekeres, chief of hematology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Florida, recently warned unexpected day-to-day activities may lead to cancer developing in the body.

In a recent comprehensive review of more than 2million young cancer patients diagnosed between 2010 to 2019, researchers found 14 cancers were on the rise: Stomach, colon, pancreatic, bone and joint, melanoma, female breast, cervical, uterine, testicular, kidney and four types of cancers of the lymph system.

Excessively hot drinks

It’s well known that alcohol can increase the risk of several forms of cancer, as it breaks down into acetaldehyde, a toxic chemical that damages DNA and creates inflammation.

However, even drinking hot beverages like tea may raise the risk of throat cancer.

study from China found people who drank burning-hot tea – over 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) – and at least one alcoholic beverage every day had a five-fold greater risk of esophageal cancer than those who did not.

And drinking the hot tea alone every day doubled the risk.

Additionally, research from the UK found almost twice the risk of throat cancer in people who drank four to six cups of hot coffee or tea every day compared to those who didn’t drink it at all.

Drinks above 140 degrees Fahrenheit are thought to damage cells in the esophagus when the tea is consumed multiple times a day for years.

Grilling

As summer weather sets in, millions of Americans are firing up their grills.

However, Dr Sekeres warns against eating meats cooked at high temperatures, such as hot dogs or burgers.

He warns grilling meats like beef, poultry, fish or pork at high temperatures generates  heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons – groups of chemical compounds that are known to be mutagenic and potentially carcinogenic.

Dr Sekeres wrote: ‘This occurs as the meat proteins react to the heat and as fat and juice drip onto the fire’s surface, causing flames and smoke.’

Recent research suggests chemicals created by these meats trigger harmful inflammation and oxidative stress, an imbalance between disease-fighting antioxidants and harmful free radicals, which attack cells and tissues. This increases the risk of colon cancer.

Dr Sekeres limits his high-heat cooked meat to once a month, even during grilling season.

Chemical hair straighteners and dyes

Dyeing or straightening your hair could also increase your risk of developing cancer.

Dr Sekeres explains this is because hair dye and chemical straighteners contain formaldehyde, a proven carcinogen in humans, and phthalates, toxic chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and durable.

They are also shown to be endocrine-disrupting chemicals, meaning they imitate the body’s hormones and interfere with the production of – and response to – natural hormones like estrogen and testosterone.

This increases the risk of developing hormone-sensitive cancers like breast and ovarian cancer.

One 2020 study of sisters found those who used permanent hair dye were more likely to develop breast cancer than those who never used it.

Another 2022 study found using any straightening products within the previous year led to a higher chance of developing uterine cancer.

Tattoos

One in three Americans has at least one tattoo, and 22 percent have more than one, according to recent data from Pew Research Center.

While the procedure is generally considered harmless, a recent study suggested tattoos could increase the risk of lymphoma – a type of cancer in the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and glands that are part of the immune system.

The exact list of chemicals depends on the ink brand, but there are usually synthetic molecules, stabilizers and heavy metals like cadmium, which has been linked to kidney damage, bone disease, lung disease and an increased risk of certain cancers.

Additionally, a small Danish study of twins found those with tattoos were 62 percent more likely to develop skin cancer, as chemicals in the ink may accumulate in the lymph nodes, glands that are a vital part of the body’s immune system.

The dye could trigger chronic inflammation, leading to abnormal cell growth and an increased risk of cancer, the researchers said.

Shisha smoking

Shisha or hookah smoking involves burning flavored tobacco with charcoal and then breathing in the tobacco smoke using a mouth pipe.

Recent research suggests one in 100 Americans have smoked hookah at least once.

While many believe this form of smoking is healthier than smoking cigarettes because they think the water in the device filters the smoke, studies have shown this is a common misconception.

Hookah smoke has high levels of harmful chemicals including tar, carbon monoxide, heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals called carcinogens.

Dr Sekeres said hookah smokers are exposed to more carbon monoxide than people who smoke cigarettes because sessions last longer, around one to two hours, compared to a few minutes for cigarettes.

In fact, the FDA estimates during a one-hour long hookah session, users inhale up to 200 times more smoke than with a single cigarette.

Captain Ibrahim Traore: The Vanguard Of A New Pan-African Renaissance

0
Captain Ibrahim Traore

“‘Africa needs a new type of citizen. A dedicated, modest, honest and informed man. A man who submerges himself in service to the nation and mankind. A man who abhors greed and detests vanity. A new type of man whose humility is his strength and whose integrity is his greatness.” -Kwame Nkrumah

“Africa doesn’t need the World Bank, IMF, Europe, or America.” – Captain Ibrahim Traore

In the heart of West Africa, from the soil of Burkina Faso once watered by the blood of martyrs and dreams of revolutionaries, a young lion has risen. Captain Ibrahim Traore, just 36 years of age, has become a living embodiment of Africa’s yearning for a future unshackled from neo-colonialism. His leadership signals a rebirth—a new dawn for a continent long betrayed by its own elite and bled by foreign interests.

African Proverb: “When the roots of a tree begin to decay, it spreads death to the branches.”

In seizing power not for personal gain but for national regeneration, Traore is setting fire to the thrones of complacency. His words cut through the fog of dependency like a sword: “We do not need the IMF or World Bank to know what our children eat or how our land should be tilled.” These are not just statements— they are battle cries for sovereignty.

Born on March 14, 1988, in Kera, Burkina Faso, Captain Traore did not enter history through inherited privilege but through commitment to a just cause. His rise to power in September 2022 via a popular-backed coup was not an accident but a response to the failures of puppetry politics. By toppling Paul-Henri Sandaogo

Damiba, he echoed the footsteps of Thomas Sankara, reclaming the revolutionary legacy long stifled by compromise.

Revolutionary Quote: “He who feeds you, controls you.” — Thomas Sankara

Traore came not as a usurper but as a guardian of the people’s voice. His legitimacy is drawn from his willingness to bleed for the land, not from the pages of foreign diplomas or IMF boardrooms.

Governance Rooted in the People’s Needs

Traore’s Burkina Faso is not a state of slogans, but of substance. Under his stewardship, the country’s GDP grew from $18.8 billion to $22.1 billion. More remarkably, internal debts were paid—a feat that testifies to his belief in African solutions to African problems.

African Proverb: “A man who uses force is afraid of reasoning.”

In contrast, Traore uses logic, numbers, and national pride—not bullets—to lead.

Agricultural Revolution: Cultivating the Future

Understanding that “a hungry nation cannot defend its freedom,” Traore launched an aggressive agricultural support program. His government distributed:

  • 400 tractors
  • 239 tillers
  • 710 motor pumps
  • 714 motorcycles

These tools were seeds of transformation. From 2022 to 2024:

  • Tomato production soared from 315,000 to 360,000 metric tonnes
  • Millet yields rose from 907,000 to 1.1 million metric tonnes
  • Rice production climbed from 280,000 to 326,000 metric tonnes

African Proverb: “You learn how to cut down trees by cutting them down.”

Traore is not theorizing; he is doing. //e is not speaking development he is delivering it.

Infrastructure and Industrialization: Laying Foundations of Sovereignty

Traore’s developmental agenda is ambitious yet grounded. He is building an airport (Ouagadougou-Donsin) to connect Burkina to the world—but on Burkinabe terms. He is constructing tomato processing plants and gold mines, signaling the end of raw material export dependency.

Kwame Nkrumah: “We must unite now or perish.”

His actions resonate with Nkrumah’s urgency. Traore is uniting sectors, people, and purpose to break the cycles of poverty and patronage.

Cultural Renaissance and National Dignity

Beyond economics, Traore understands the power of symbols. When he banned British legal wigs and gowns, replacing them with traditional attire, he wasn’t just altering a dress code. He was reclaiming a stolen identity. He expelled French troops and banned French media—decisions made not in hatred, but in honor of sovereignty.

Revolutionary Quote: “Colonialism is not a machine to be taken apart easily. It is a knife at the throat of the nation.” — Frantz Fanon

The Shadows of Struggle: Security and Human Rights Concerns

Yet no revolution is without its trials. Reports by Human Rights Watch reveal troubling accounts of civilian killings, especially among the Fulani people, and growing insecurity with over 60% of the nation outside government control.

African Proverb: “Even the best cooking pot will not produce food.”

Progress must not blind leadership to justice. A balance must be struck between defending the nation and defending the dignity of every citizen. Traore must not become what he once resisted.

Pan-African Fire: Lighting the Torch Across the Continent

Traore’s voice is not isolated. It echoes across a continent still thirsting for the dream of Lumumba, Sankara, and Nkrumah.

Kwame Nkrumah: “The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of Africa.”

He is joined, in spirit, by leaders like John Dramani Mahama, signaling a reawakening of transgenerational solidarity. Burkina Faso, under Traore, is becoming a lighthouse to lost ships.

Captain Traore: “We are writing history, and there is no room for cowardice.”

Rhetorical Reflections: The Mirror to Africa’s Soul

  • Who benefits from Africa’s underdevelopment while sitting at lavish tables built on African sweat?
  • What future do we promise our children if we barter away today’s courage for tomorrow’s regret?
  • When will Africa stop begging for crumbs while sitting on a feast of gold, oil, and fertile land?

Revolutionary Quote: “If the people are prepared to die for their rights, they will win them.” — Am^lcarCabral.

Food for thought: the wisdom meal

  1. “When you cut down a tree in the forest, many more sprout in its place.” Let those who plot in shadows be warned: if you strike down Traore, know that tenfold more resolute and fearless Traores shall rise from the soil of Africa—more

dreadful in their convictions, more rooted in their purpose. The voice of a people cannot be silenced by bullets or betrayal. Like the baobab, this movement’s roots go deep; you may burn the branches, but the roots will always birth new growth.

  • “A child who has never gone hungry does not understand the pain of an empty bowl.” To those who have looted Africa’s gold, oil, cocoa, and diamonds while her children chew on hunger—your feast has lasted long enough. The earth cries and the people stir. Let Africa’s wealth feed its rightful owners. Let not the hands that built empires from African sweat be left trembling from starvation. For the pot of injustice always boils over, and when it does, no one escapes the scalding.
    • “Ifyou cannot build a hut, do not destroy the one we have roofed.” To those who sabotage progress under the guise of partnership or aid—stay away. We are planting our own future with our own hands. Burkina Faso’s leadership has shown courage and clarity; let all Africans look and learn. We do not need puppeteers— we need unity. “Even the smallest axe can fell the tallest iroko tree if it keeps striking.” Africa is rising, and those who cannot help should not hinder.

Path Forward: Wisdom for the Watchman

To Traore—and all African leaders who dare to lead with purpose—we offer these guiding flames:

  1. Hold fast to Pan-African unity—for no nation can stand alone on a fractured continent.
    1. Resist validation from former colonizers—the true judge is the well-being of your people.
    2. Engage globally, but stand proudly—trade as equals, not as subjects.
    3. Marry revolution with democracy—build institutions, not cults of personality.
    4. Beware internal betrayal—for as Nkrumah warned, “the greatest enemies of Africa are sometimes Africans in power serving foreign masters.”

Conclusion: Writing a New Chapter of African Greatness

Captain Ibrahim Traore is not just a name in the headlines—he is a metaphor for what Africa can become. A continent where youth lead, where culture is not erased but elevated, and where freedom is not granted, but earned.

Patrice Lumumba: “Africa will write its own history, and it will be, to the north and south of the Sahara, a history of glory and dignity.”

Let us rise. Let us build. Let us dare to believe again.

African Proverb: “Until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter.”

Traore is teaching the lion to write.

CHOO BOI! with us. AFRICA CANNOT WAIT ANY FURTHER.
