Liverpool welcome PSG to Anfield

Surely still counting their lucky Parisian stars, Liverpool will play host to Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 contest at Anfield on Tuesday evening.

Arne Slot‘s men somehow left the French capital with a 1-0 win on their record from last week’s first leg, where a super sub and a super goalkeeper were their heroes of the hour.

Try as they might for the full 90 minutes, an increasingly desperate PSG remarkably failed to breach the goal of an inspired Alisson Becker – barring an offside Khvicha Kvaratskhelia effort – as the long-serving Liverpool number one made a masterful nine saves at the Parc des Princes.

As surprising as Les Parisiens’ first-leg loss may have been given their volume of opportunities, it was just the same old story for PSG in the Champions League, the one trophy that continues to elude them amid their non-stop spending sprees.

The perennial Ligue 1 champions can take inspiration from last year’s tournament as they seek to complete a mesmerising comeback job today.

PSG’s crop were allegedly left surprised at the level of Liverpool’s performance in midweek, and while Anfield on Champions League nights can prove intimidating for any all foes, the Kop may be silenced.

Barcelona to defend narrow first-leg lead as they host Benfica

Barcelona will look to defend a narrow first-leg lead when they welcome Portuguese giants Benfica to Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys for Tuesday’s return leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.

Raphinha

The Blaugrana are looking to reach the quarter-finals in back-to-back Champions League campaigns, while the visitors want to advance to the last eight for the third time in four seasons.

Barcelona have not played since last week’s trip to Lisbon after Saturday’s La Liga home match was postponed following the tragic death of first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia.

Barcelona will try their best to prepare for Tuesday’s Champions League clash in difficult circumstances.

Benfica would have been bitterly disappointed to fall to a narrow defeat in last week’s home leg, especially as they missed the chance to take advantage of Cubarsi’s red card as they lost at home to Barcelona for the second time this season after previously suffering a 5-4 loss in January’s league phase encounter.

Barcelona’s high defensive line could offer opportunities for Benfica’s attack to exploit, but while we think that the visitors will get on the scoresheet, we believe the Blaugrana will showcase their firepower to seal a relatively comfortable victory and a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Inter Milan aim to finish the job against Feyenoord

With one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals after last week’s first leg, Inter Milan will aim to finish the job against Feyenoord when the pair meet again on Tuesday.

Inter take a two-goal lead into the second leg of their last-16 tie at San Siro, so the Dutch club face an improbable task against Europe’s meanest defence.

Inter Milan players

Simone Inzaghi‘s side have played 875 minutes of Champions League football this term and only been behind for 285 seconds, during a late loss to Bayer Leverkusen – the sole goal they have conceded in nine matches.

So, having won each of their last five European home games without conceding, fans of the Nerazzurri may expect their team to progress without too much fuss.

Across all competitions, Inter have won 28 and lost only five of 41 games this season, recently overtaking immediate predecessors Napoli in the fight to retain their Scudetto.

There was very little in the first leg to suggest Feyenoord have sufficient firepower to topple another Milan giant.

With clean sheets written in their DNA under Simone Inzaghi, Inter can expect to progress and book a possible last-eight clash with Bayern Munich – their victims in the 2010 final.

Osahen On Fire In Parliament! …Accuses Gov’t Of Hating E-Levy But Uses Its Proceeds To Celebrate Independence Day

0
Minority leader, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The minority leader, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the government for utilising proceeds from the taxes it complained Ghanaians were suffering from, to finance the recent Independence Day celebration and other expenses.

Speaking during the debate on the 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Friday, March 7, 2025 Afenyo-Markin criticised the President for failing to acknowledge the contributions of the previous administration and for what he described as a pattern of “lamentation” rather than solutions.

“Since he came, Mr. Speaker, the very taxes that he said Ghanaians were suffering from, the E-levy and other taxes are the same revenues his government is using to celebrate Independence Day. These are the revenues they are using to fuel cars and finance all government expenses,” he said.

“When he came to this house, all we heard was lamentation, lamentation, lamentation, but this is not new. This is how we’ve always known the president to be,” he stated.

According to him, President Mahama’s approach has remained unchanged over the years. He recalled that in 2013, the then-president had also come to Parliament to deliver the State of the Nation Address, but instead of outlining a way forward, he lamented about the state of the economy, despite having been part of the same government since 2009.

“In 2016, when we had the financial sector crisis, he came to this house and blamed the Bank of Ghana for failing in its supervisory functions. Yet, as President, he was responsible for appointing the Governor and the Board of the Central Bank. How do you blame the Bank of Ghana when you are the one in charge?” Afenyo-Markin continued.

Lack of New Policy Initiatives

The minority leader further accused the government of failing to introduce any significant policy initiative since taking office.

He argued that many of the policies currently in place, including Free SHS, were inherited from the previous administration.

“What the president failed to tell Ghanaians is that despite all the crises, the NPP managed to introduce Free SHS and sustained it for eight years. He was even in a hurry to claim credit for a budget he came to meet, the same budget enabling him to manage the economy today,” he noted.

Gender Representation

The minority leader also criticised the government for failing to meet the 30% threshold for women’s representation in leadership positions.

He pointed out that despite having competent female leaders in Parliament they were largely overlooked in ministerial appointments.

“The President has failed to comply with the Affirmative Action Law. How do you appoint only 10% women in the cabinet when the law mandates at least 30%? Are you saying the women in this chamber are not competent?” he asserted.

He mentioned several female MPs who were qualified for ministerial roles but had been sidelined, questioning why people like Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings and Helen Ntoso had not been given appointments.

“Mr. Speaker, how can the President overlook someone like Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings? How can he ignore such a competent material?” Afenyo-Markin asked.

Economic Strategy

The minority leader also criticised the government’s approach to economic policy, particularly the much-touted 24-hour economy initiative.

According to him, the policy remains vague and lacks a clear implementation strategy. He argued that rather than focusing on committees and consultations, the government should take decisive action, just as the NPP did with the Free SHS policy when it took office.

“When Akufo-Addo came into office, the first thing he did was implement Free SHS without delay. What is stopping this government from doing the same with their so-called 24-hour economy?”

Afenyo-Markin also strongly criticized the government’s approach to public sector employment, claiming that rather than expanding opportunities for unemployed youth, the administration is instead dismissing qualified workers to make way for party loyalists.

“If the government indeed believes in creating opportunities for all, the least it could have done was to create space for new recruitment, rather than look into the eyes of parents who are paying school fees and tell them, ‘I am sacking your son to come and sit at home.’ I don’t care what happens to you,” he lamented.

According to him, this move contradicts the president’s claim of being a leader who cares about the welfare of citizens. He accused the government of hypocrisy, stating that despite criticising the previous administration, it has done little to improve employment opportunities for Ghanaians.

Misrepresentation of Social Policies

The Minority Leader also challenged the government’s claims regarding social intervention programs, arguing that many of the initiatives it touts were actually introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and not the current administration.

“The health insurance policy that the NDC nearly collapsed had to be reactivated and improved by the NPP. Yet today, they come and claim that ‘Mahama cares’ because they want to introduce some subsidiary policy on it,” he said.

He further pointed to the School Feeding Program as another example, asserting that it was an initiative started under former President John Agyekum Kuffuor but is now being claimed by the current government as its own.

“Did Kufuor go around saying ‘Kufuor cares’ when he introduced health insurance and the School Feeding Program? Can the NDC name a single social intervention program it has introduced and successfully implemented?” he challenged.

Scholarships

Afenyo-Markin contrasted the current administration’s approach to public service opportunities with that of the NPP, arguing that the previous government was more inclusive.

He cited the case of the newly approved Deputy Attorney General, who, despite being a vocal critic of the NPP, was given a state-funded scholarship to pursue his PhD in the United Kingdom under the previous administration.

“Even when he was loud on the streets criticizing the NPP, the government did not deny him the opportunity for higher education. His fees were paid by the state, accommodation paid, living expenses paid for four years. That is what a fair government does,” he stated.

Lack of Innovation and Economic Deception

The Minority Leader also accused the government of relying on tax revenues and economic structures inherited from the previous administration while misleading the public into believing it had introduced new financial policies.

“The government boasts of paying matured bonds and treasury bills, but from which money? Has this administration introduced any new tax policy? These are the monies they came to meet. So why the mischief? Why the deceit?” he questioned.

Afenyo -Markin further alleged that the government is struggling to fulfill its campaign promises and is already facing internal divisions over political appointments.

He claimed that the selection process for government positions is being influenced by party factions, sidelining many competent members of the ruling party.

“Even the independent MPs who align with the NDC majority – none of them has been considered for an appointment. This is a true family-and-friends government. You must be connected to someone before your name will even be considered,” he alleged.

A State of Hopelessness

According to Afenyo-Markin, the frustrations within the ruling party are spilling over into Parliament, where many MPs are uncertain about their future.

“Mr. Speaker, how should MPs go and account to their constituents when they themselves do not even know what their role is in this government? Some don’t know if they’ll be on a board, others don’t know if they’ll be appointed as Deputy Ministers,” he remarked.

He suggested that the confusion and frustration within the ruling party were indicators of a government that lacks a clear vision.

“If members of the President’s own party do not know when resources will be made available for their constituencies, what about the ordinary Ghanaian? What about the foot soldiers? This is a state of hopelessness,” he asserted.

Looking to 2028

Concluding his remarks, Afenyo-Markin reassured Ghanaians that the current hardships under the government would not last forever.

He expressed confidence that the opposition would return to power in the 2028 elections to restore hope and improve governance.

“The ravaging clouds shall not long be victorious. They shall not long possess the skies. A day of hope is on its way. And a better government, a government that understands the plight of the people, will return to resolve these challenges,” he declared.

Two Alleged Nigerian Kidnappers Fail To Meet Bail Terms

Two Nigerians accused of kidnapping an 80-year-old American woman, Diana Christine Nelson, have made their second appearance at the Circuit Court in Accra.

The accused, Emmanuel Adedoyin Adebayor and Esther Ogbonna, appeared in handcuffs on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 after failing to meet their bail conditions. They were accompanied by security officers as they were led into the courtroom.

At a previous hearing on February 21, 2025 the trial judge, His Honour Samuel Bright Acquah, granted them bail of GH¢500,000.00 each, with two sureties.

One surety was required to be a Nigerian residing in Ghana, while the other had to be a Ghanaian citizen.

The court imposed strict conditions in line with Ghanaian law, which allows bail for all offenses but at the judge’s discretion.

Despite their bail grant, Adebayor and Ogbonna remain in custody due to their inability to fulfill theirbail conditions. Their case has now been adjourned to March 17.

Alleged Kidnapping Scheme

According to the prosecution, the accused conspired to lure Nelson to Ghana under false pretenses.

Adebayor and Poromo inserting Nelson’s bank card into an ATM

Emmanuel Adebayor allegedly posed as “Mark Hammond,” a well-known U.S. actor and convinced the elderly woman to travel to Ghana on November 22, 2024.

Upon her arrival at Kotoka International Airport, she was received by Esther Ogbonna, who took her to a residence in East Legon Hills.

Later, she was moved to an apartment in Tema Community 11, where she was held captive.

During her captivity, the suspects allegedly seized Nelson’s mobile phones and bank cards, restricting her communication with the outside world.

Investigators say Adebayor and another suspect, Dennis Poromo – who remains at large – used her bank cards to withdraw $15,821.70 from her accounts.

They also reportedly demanded a $150,000 ransom from her family in the U.S. via Snapchat.

Rescue and Arrest

The case came to light when FBI officials at the U.S. Embassy in Accra alerted Ghanaian authorities.

Police intelligence led to the discovery of Nelson at a hotel in Larteh Akwapim on December 8, 2024.

Days later, on December 11, 2024 police arrested Adebayor while he was attempting to withdraw money using Nelson’s debit card.

Under interrogation, he took the investigation team, led by Detective Corporal Daniel Serekye, to the Tema Community 11 apartment, where Nelson was found weak and traumatised. She was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention.

Prosecution’s Evidence

The prosecution has obtained images and videos as key evidence against the accused. The materials include;

Footage of Nelson’s arrival at the Kotoka International Airport where she was received by the accused.

Images of the East Legon Hills residence and the Tema Community 11 apartment, where she was held.

CCTV footage of Adebayor and Poromo using Nelson’s bank card to withdraw money at various ATMs.

Further investigations revealed that the suspects had sold Nelson’s mobile phones – an iPhone 15, Samsung Galaxy A15, and a Bru phone – at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

However, authorities have recovered GH¢7,000.00 in cash and GH¢4,000.00 from ATM withdrawals. Her iPhone 12 remains missing.

As the case progresses, law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to apprehend Dennis Poromo, the third suspect in the case.

The Sky Train Saga – Wild Goose Chase

0
A Sky Train

The Sky Train project which received considerable media coverage during Nana Akufo-Addo’s regime has resurfaced.

This time, a purported amount of 2 million dollars assigned for the project cannot be traced (according to Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice).

Our investigation into the matter reveals the following facts.

  1. The erstwhile Ministry of Railways Development has stated categorically that government did not allocate any funds for the Sky Train Project.
  2. The Ministry managed to support the preparation of a 300 page PRE-FEASIBILITY report which was the basis for discussions with an investor group, Ai Sky Train Consortium (a subsidiary of Africa Investor Consortium based in South Africa).
  3. GIIF (Ghana Infrastructural Investment Fund) was set up in 2014 to partner the Private Sector to promote infrastructural development. GIIF is mandated to invest in infrastructural projects through the granting of loans, acquisition of shares or both.
  4. Resulting from discussions at International Fora in South Africa in 2018, GIIF, led by the CEO,Mr Solomon Asamoah, expressed interest in acquiring equity shares in Ai Sky Train Consortium.
  5. Ten (10) percent of the EQUITY SHARES in Ai Sky Train Consortium were acquired from Africa Investor Consortium with an amount of 2 million dollars in 2019.

6.This equity investment is fully documented, with a share certificate issued in the name of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund, demonstrating a legitimate and transparent transaction.

7.According to the literature, an estimated cost for the 194km route stood at approximately 2 BILLION US DOLLARS.

A feasibility study required not less than 5 million dollars. So the 2 million dollars could not have been for the building of a rail line.

8.This clarified the funds were used to purchase 10 percent shares in Ai Sky Train Consortium from Africa Investor Holdings.

9.There are internal audit reports that capture these shares as part of Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund’s investment portfolio.

10.The 2021 Auditor General’s report also acknowledges that these shares were indeed purchased.

The records indicate that these shares were duly purchased with dividends accruing on these shares.

Women Gather In Bold Conversation As Tears Flow In Resilience

0
Some speakers and women who attened the conference

Some women in Ghana marked the 2025 International Women’s Day by telling their life stories and inspiring each other in bold and frank conversations that left several shedding tears of resilience.

The event, organised by Adwoa Amofa Osei and powered by Loud Royalty Events, was dubbed the Stronger Together Women’s Health Conference (STWHC).

Held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, Legon, Accra, the conference was a conversation on women’s health and survival journey.

Speakers included health experts and some women who had lived it, felt it and agreed to share their story with other women.

SUPPORT

Welcoming participants to the conference, the vision bearer, Adwoa Amofa Osei, popularly known as Adwoaloud, shared the inspiration behind the event.

According to her, a situation she went through in 2019 for about seven months, saw her visiting nine hospitals for a solution.

She stated that after recovering in September 2020, she decided to organise the event to educate women on their health and inspire them, but due to procrastination, it took over four years to manifest.

“So for me, a few years back, specifically in 2019, right from January 2, 2019 up until July 31, 2019 I bled every single day of that year and I kept running around.

“I went to about nine hospitals, including fertility, and I did about 12 Gynaecologists and it was one diagnosis after the other. Everyone was just telling me something different, and then eventually I met my current Gynaecologist.

Adwoa Amofa Osei, CEO, Loud Royalty Events

“In fact, at some point, one doctor who I went to see, I just walked into his consulting room. He asked me what drugs I had been given and all. He just looked at me and said, gyama wo ’nya cervical cancer oo, to wit, you have cervical cancer. Just like that. I bet if I wasn’t very strong-willed, I don’t know what would have happened before I left that consulting room.

“So the very first time that I went into the theatre on 4th September 2020, after I recovered, I decided that I wanted to do this event, but nobody procrastinates more than I do. So every time I think about it, I’m like, no, it’s not the right time. We hit this year, and it kept coming back to me, and then I was talking to my friends about it,” Adwoa narrated.

She continued that, “But today, I and my team and all of you that have supported, we gathered here to have these conversations that are oftentimes just ignored, and it’s very sensitive to talk about. And people don’t know who to talk to. So, it’s more like a support group. Let’s have these conversations. Let’s learn. Let’s educate ourselves. During the time when I was receiving the messages, I talked to a few people, some people over 30, and they did not even know what they had to do at their age. So these are critical issues that we need to look at as women.

“So that is why we are here. I hope that by the time we end, we would have been impacted, we would have been informed, and we would have been educated. I wish you all a good stay. Do enjoy yourself.”

PRESENTATIONS

Dr. Vanessa Aseye Atikpui talked to participants about sexual and reproductive health and mental health matters.

Staying on her topic, she stated that these conversations are being had so as to reduce the stigma associated with women’s health in general “and to educate and empower us as women.”

She said, “Knowing your body allows you to spot anything that may be unwell. If you know so, we need to do better. Nobody goes to check in on their health. But then getting help would help you determine anything that is bothering you. And it’s okay to ask for help.”

Dr. Kwabena Apea-Kubi, Reproductive Medicine Consultant, talked about the incidence of infertility, the causes and the evaluation.

Other Speakers took turns in sharing their life stories to inspire their fellow women, some of whom got emotional.

Endometriosis Advocate Azitariga Atinganma Talata, Founder of My Dear Sisters Keeper Gh, Whitney Boakye-Mensah, and Media Personality Gloria AkpeneNyarku, popularly known as MzGee, shared their survival journey with participants.

Witless Educated Cohorts Are Now Re-Writing History

OPINION

How can true Anlos demonstrate in support of Rawlings who murdered full blooded Anlos and go on to put on a placard, “Ex-Prez. Jerry John Rawlings: Ghana’s Root For Democracy?” Rawlings admitted that Joy Amedume whom he killed on June 26, 1979 was innocent, something he knew before he signed the Anlo man’s death warrant. Then in 1986, another Anlo, Mawuli Goka, was jail on treason charges, when in fact someone in the corridors of power wanted his car. In jail he was forced into cannibalism and was later murdered.

What are the Anlo Traditional Council and the Anlo Diasporans saying to the Amedume and Goka families, before coming out to protest when Rawlings was called a murderer?

In 1981 Rawlings truncated a constitution and stole our democracy only to replace it after eleven years with one that is worse than the two before.

Ghanaians need to discuss and debate the Rawlings’ interview on Asaase FM where he admitted killing innocent souls, when he said among many other implicating words that“…. and here you have innocent people as well who had to die to save hundreds.” If he was in court and made this confession, would he be convicted of manslaughter or murder?

The whole idea of June 4, was ethnic cleansing and restoration of Nkrumahism. It had nothing to do with fighting corruption.

Rawlings killed the eight senior army officers and ex-heads-of-state who were made up of four Akans, one Guan, one Kassen, one Ga and one Ewe/Anlo. That was ethnic cleansing.

Had it been an Akan, who killed many Ewes and came to confess later that he knew they were innocent but they had to die anyway, like Ghana would know no peace.

The Speaker of Parliament should not have received the petition from the Anlo demonstrators. The issue of whether Rawlings was a murderer should be debated in Parliament with proofs and evidences like his Asaase FM’s interview and writings and documents in which he was implicated as a murderer but never came out to challenged.

What instigated this Rawlings was a murderer issue, was when the NDC Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, on the floor of Parliament called Dr. J.B. Danquah, a traitor and CIA agent. He claimed that it was in Martin Meredith’s book, The State of Africa, that J.B. Danquah was called a CIA agent. It is very obvious he was as usual stretching the truth, because Martin Meredith stated in the book that “Nkrumah’s downfall… came … because of his fatal decision to interfere with the military.”

One of the most respected senior army officers, General Ankrah, was dismissed from the Armed Forces in July 1965 on suspicion of plotting a coup. J.B. Danquah who was imprisoned for the second time on January 8, 1964 butthis time without charges, died in jail on February 4, 1965. Going by Meredith’s statement, the Armed Forces, decided to strike after Ankrah was dismissed and that was six months after J.B. Danquah died, so how could he be behind any coup plot?

Hon. Murtala Muhammed, should come and tell us that he accepts all that Martin Meredith wrote in his history book. He should not misquote statements but come and say he believes all the corruption allegations made against Nkrumah in that book. Nkrumah, Meredith stated, specifically set up the National Development Corporation to “facilitate the handling of bribes from foreign businessmen and others seeking government contract.”

The Akyems are also storming Parliament and Hon. Murtala Muhammed must have full proof that J.B. Danquah was a traitor and a CIA agent. If the Akyems are not allowed into the House, then it is clear that there is an agenda against Akans, and this can affect the peace and stability in this country.

While the witless cohorts are attempting to re-write history, Parliament and all Ghanaians must warn them not to drag this country into ethnic conflict. For why is it that whenever something is said against an Akan, it should be considered minor, but when an Akan does same against another tribe then, Ghana burns?

It is now a very good thing that the youth are reading about the true historical events of this country and are making sound judgments. They are expressing disgust about the deceptions and they would one day explode.

Any one who says J.B. Danquah is a traitor and a CIA agent is very irresponsible and lacks knowledge of history. It is about time we re-visit our past and bring out from the archives events that happened and let everyone know the truth.

J.B. Danquah was said to be a murderer because he defended murderers in court. If so then most of our lawyers are criminals.

During the Nkrumah era, there was so much injustice even in our legal system, that anyone could accuse the other for treason, and the accused would be imprisoned without any trial.

And talking about traitors, then Rawlings was one. He asked for help from Libya to betray our democracy by overthrowing an Nkrumaist government, how about that?

We are waiting for the Anlos to hit the streets and demonstrate against the removal of Kotoka’s name from our airport in Accra. Remember, Rawlings pronounced Kotoka, a hero for bringing us democracy. And by the way, are these Anlos aware that someone called Rawlings a barking dog?

President Mahama Must Walk The Talk In Women Empowerment

0
President John Mahama

As Ghana joins the world in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to gender equality, calling for urgent measures to empower women and girls across all sectors.

In a Facebook post marking the occasion, President Mahama urged Ghanaians to accelerate action towards achieving gender parity, emphasising that women’s empowerment is central to national progress.

“This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, calls for urgent measures to ensure that we achieve gender equality. Ghana has made some significant strides, particularly in electing its first female Vice President. Let’s build on this momentum,” the president stated.

President Mahama highlighted the need to prioritise women’s empowerment in areas such as education, business, politics and leadership, stressing that Ghana must continue creating opportunities for women to thrive.

“We must all prioritise empowering and uplifting women in every sphere, from education and business to politics and leadership. Let’s work together to create a Ghana where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential,” he added.

The theme for this year’s celebration, #AccelerateAction, is a reminder that gender parity cannot be achieved through rhetorics alone, it requires deliberate policies, decisive leadership and measurable actions.

While Ghana has made notable advancements, including the election of its first female Vice President, there is still much work to be done. Unfortunately, the government’s failure to uphold its own commitments undermines the very progress it claims to support.

The reality today paints a different picture, women constitute only 10% of cabinet ministers. This glaring shortfall is not just a broken political promise but a violation of the hope of Ghanaians to promote gender equality.

It also raises questions about the administration’s true commitment to advancing women’s leadership in governance.

Beyond the legal and political implications, the under representation of women in leadership positions has far-reaching consequences for Ghana’s development.

Countries that prioritise female participation in decision-making tend to perform better in areas such as education, healthcare and poverty reduction. When women have a seat at the table, policies are more likely to address issues that disproportionately affect them, such as maternal health, domestic violence and economic empowerment.

The continued dominance of men in decision-making roles, therefore, does not only limit opportunities for women but also weakens the overall quality of governance.

There is also a need to build a strong pipeline of female leaders. While enforcing gender quotas is important, sustainable change requires investing in women’s leadership development. This means creating mentorship programs, scholarships, and professional training opportunities that prepare women for leadership roles in both the public and private sectors.

We must cultivate an environment where women are not only included in governance but are also equipped with the skills, resources, and networks needed to excel.

President Mahama’s administration has an opportunity to set a precedent for future governments by demonstrating genuine commitment to gender equality.

Upholding the 30% representation requirement is not merely about fulfilling a campaign promise but it is about ensuring that governance reflects the diversity of the population it serves. A government that fails to prioritise women’s leadership is not only failing women but also failing the nation as a whole.

Ghana has the legal framework, the political will and the public support needed to achieve gender equality. What is needed now is action. The time for excuses has passed. If this government truly believes in empowering women, it must prove it, not with words, but with policies, appointments and leadership that reflect its stated commitment.

Gender equality is not a privilege to be granted; it is a fundamental right that must be upheld. The future of Ghana depends on it.

AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has reaffirmed its commitment to empower women through its developmental agenda as it marked International Women’s Day with a Fair.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year to recognize and honour the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world.

The day also serves as a call to action for accelerating women’s equality and addressing the challenges that women continue to face.

Speaking at an event to mark the day, the Managing Director of AngloGold Obuasi Mine, Mr. Samuel Boakye Pobee said though the mine has made significant strides in promoting female representation, it is still working assiduously to build their capacity to unlock opportunities and assume leadership roles in the mine.

Reps of various groups, Nananom, and AGA Staff pose for the camera

“The mining industry has traditionally been male-dominated. We acknowledge that we have a responsibility to create opportunities for women to succeed. That is why we have made deliberate efforts to increase the number of female employees in our company in the next two years,” the Managing Director emphasised.

Ing. Rachael Wereko Oppong, a Senior Metallurgist of AGA, in a presentation said as women engineers on the mine, they have embarked on a project to inspire students in various schools in Obuasi to take to STEM education.

She stated that as part of their schedule they mentor the students and also guide them as to what they aspire to do in future.

Ing. Wereko Oppong encouraged ladies in various schools who wish to pursue engineering to contact her group for the necessary advice and support.

She also extended an invitation to parents who also want their children to be engineers to contact them for the needed direction and advice.

The Adansihemaa, Nana Amonimaa Dede II, who led other Queenmothers to teach participants on how to prepare local dishes, commended AngloGold for massively supporting and investing in women.

The new Kaase Police Station

A new Police Station built by Nana Mensah Bonsu, Kaasehene, has been commissioned at Kaase, in Kumasi, weeks after he had outdoored an ultra-modern Health Centre for the same community.

Kaase, a suburb of Kumasi, is both a residential and industrial area in the Kumasi Metropolis. Nana Mensah Bonsu disclosed that his vision to build a police station for the community dated back to when the then Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP (Rtd) Nathan Kofi Boakye, informed him that the Asokwa Divisional Command was overwhelmed with workload and suggested building a police station at Kaase.

He said COP Kofi Boakye went ahead to provide modern architectural drawings of a police station for implementation, noting that “security” is very vital in our day-to-day activities.

Nana Mensah Bonsu thanked Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his support and guidance and the Kaase Township, and urged the Police Administration to take good care of the edifice for the developmental growth of Asanteman and Ghana as a whole.

DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, Ashanti Regional Police Commander thanked Kaasehene for such an edifice, noting that the police station has not been built in the community to intimidate people, but rather for the “security” of all citizens.

The Police Commander disclosed that regardless of its magnitude, “crime” is a crime, noting that the “law” has no respect for anyone.

He further advised personnel, who will be manning the station, to keep the building in good condition in order to avoid its deterioration, noting that under the new GPS leadership, “maintenance” is part of their culture.

DCOP Teye-Cudjoe announced that Chief Inspector Charles Konadu would be the Station Officer at the Kaase Police Station and further charged him to keep the station in good condition, as well as treat civilians professionally and with civility.

The police chief further called for community support to facilitate effective policing and called on stakeholders to help the Ghana Police Service with vehicles and motorbikes to enable them to fight crime in the society.

Nana Baffour Agyei Fosu Twitwiaka, Otumfuo’s Anantahene, who represented the Asantehene, congratulated Nana Mensah Bonsu for such a feat, noting that Asanteman would be much better, if every chief emulates such development in their respective communities.

Nana Fosu Twitwiaka noted that Ghana is short of the United Nations  recommendation of  police-to-population ratio of 1:500 and hoped the initiative of  Kaasehene would help improve Ghana’s police-population ratio, as well as enhance the nation’s security.

Nana Baffour Agyei Fosu Twitwiaka reiterated the need for personnel, who would be manning the station to take good care of the building, and thus encourage other chiefs to emulate Kaasehene’s feat in their respective communities.

The Anantahene also called on the corporate bodies, organisations and the general public to support the Police with vehicles, motorbikes, computers and accessories.
