Omotola opens up on realities of marriage

Omotola

Veteran Nollywood Actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, known not only for her groundbreaking roles in film but also for her enduring marriage to Captain Matthew Ekeinde, recently gave fans a rare glimpse into the inner workings of her nearly three-decade-long relationship.

In a conversation on ChudeJideonwo’s live podcast, the screen icon revealed the highs, lows, and faith-driven principles that have helped her sustain a healthy marriage since 1996.

Omotola didn’t sugarcoat the experience. She admitted that even in a loving marriage, there are tough days.

“There are times when I look at him and I’m not in love. I go to God and report him,” she said with a mix of sincerity and humour.

“I honour him not because I’m head over heels in love at that moment, but because I honour the One who gave me the mandate to be with him.”

Her honesty struck a chord, acknowledging that every marriage experiences moments of doubt, fatigue, and emotional distance.

“There are times I look at him and think, ‘Somebody please remind me why I married this man.’ And he probably feels the same way about me. Those days come.”

In a world obsessed with perfect images of love and success, Omotola urges couples to embrace their humanity.

“I think the problem is people trying to be fake. Relax—it’s not that serious. Remember you’re a human being.”

She also joked about being attracted to other men, adding a dose of realism that few public figures dare to share:

“There are times I see guys who look ‘fantabulous’ and I say, ‘Oh child!’ But you check yourself.”

At the core of her marital philosophy is spirituality. Omotola emphasises that choosing a partner with shared faith is key.

“From the onset, when you’re meeting someone, make sure you have God. Pray that you meet the right person.”

This belief has shaped how she deals with conflict and hardship, turning to prayer, reflection, and spiritual discipline rather than rash decisions.

Omotola likens marriage to flying a plane—with her husband as the pilot and herself as a trusted co-pilot.

Man gifted me GH¢100,000 for taking photos with his children –Kalybos

Ghanaian actor and comedian Kalybos has revealed that a simple gesture of kindness towards some young fans in 2016 earned him a cheque of GH₵100,000.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with arts and culture journalist Kwame Dadzie, Kalybos recounted how the encounter unfolded while he was stuck in traffic on the Osu road.

“One time I was in a heavy traffic on the Osu road and a car pulled up by my side and I could see he had gone to pick up his kids. And they saw me. So they were all happy about it. They wanted to take a picture and the father told them they were in traffic. I watched ahead of me and realised the traffic was heavy, so I got down from my car, and asked if I could sit at the back, and I sat at the back. We took pictures, the man was just shocked and was looking at me. And he took my number,” he narrated.

Kalybos, known in real life as Richard Asante, said the man later called him and explained that he mostly spent time with his children when he visited Ghana. He added that the man shared an earlier incident at a mall where his children had been snubbed by a popular actress when they tried to take a photo with her.

According to Kalybos, the man was so touched by the comedian’s humility that he invited him to his office for a chat. What followed was something the actor describes as the “biggest free bono money” he had ever received.

“So he invited me to his office, I went there, we had a little chat and then he gave me an envelope,” Kalybos said.

“Something told me that I should open it. I opened the envelope and it was a cheque. You wanna hear the amount? The biggest free bono money I have ever had in my life. It was a hundred thousand Ghana cedis,” he said.

He added that he used the money to buy his second car.

Kalybos is best known for his role in the popular comedy series Boys Kasa, where he starred alongside actress Ahoufe Patri. Since then, he has featured in several Ghanaian films including Kalybos in ChinaAmakye and Dede, and John and John.

Rescuers search for survivors after the bridge collapsed

At least nine people were killed after a bridge over a river collapsed in India’s western Gujarat state on Wednesday, news agency Press Trust of India reported while quoting police officials.

Gujarat’s Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said several vehicles were on the bridge when a portion of it collapsed, sending many into the river. He said at least five people were rescued.

The incident occurred in Gujarat’s Vadodara district, which has witnessed heavy rains over the past few days. The bridge was constructed in 1985, Patel said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the accident was ”deeply saddening” and offered condolences to those who died.

India’s infrastructure has long been marred by safety concerns, sometimes leading to major disasters on its highways and bridges.

In 2022, a century-old cable suspension bridge collapsed into a river in Gujarat, sending hundreds plunging into the water and killing at least 132.

European rights court says Russia broke international law in Ukraine

Scene of Russian invasion of Ukraine

Europe’s top human rights court has ruled that Russia violated international law in Ukraine, marking the first time an international court has found Moscow responsible for human rights abuses since the full-scale invasion in 2022.

Judges at the European Court of Human Rights also ruled on Wednesday that Russia was behind the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17), the first time Moscow was named by an international court as being responsible for the 2014 tragedy that killed 298 people.

Judges at the Strasbourg court are ruling on four cases brought by Ukraine and the Netherlands against Russia, encompassing a wide range of alleged human rights violations relating to the conflict, including the downing of MH17 and the kidnapping of Ukrainian children.

Any decision will be largely symbolic. The complaints were brought before the court’s governing body expelled Russia in 2022, following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

But families of the victims of the MH17 disaster see the decision as an important milestone in their 11-year quest for justice.

The Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down on July 17, 2014, using a Russian-made Buk missile fired from territory in eastern Ukraine controlled by separatist Moscow-aligned rebels. All 298 passengers and crew were killed, including 196 Dutch citizens. In May, the United Nations’ aviation agency found Russia responsible for the disaster.

The court’s ruling comes after Russia targeted Ukraine with a record 728 drones overnight.

On Wednesday, Ukraine said eight civilians were killed in Russian drone and bombing attacks in the war-scarred Donetsk region in the east of the country – five in the town of Rodynske and three in the town of Kostiantynivka.

Ukraine suffers heaviest attack as Trump criticises Putin

Trump criticises Putin

President Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine has been hit by the biggest ever aerial attack from Russia, after 728 drones and 13 cruise or ballistic missiles struck cities around the country in multiple waves.

Zelensky condemned the “telling attack”, adding: “It comes precisely at a time when so many efforts have been made to achieve peace, to establish a ceasefire, and yet only Russia continues to rebuff them all.”

The overnight strike came after President Donald Trump said the US would send more weapons to Kyiv – a reversal of last week’s suspension which US media said Trump had not known about.

On Tuesday, the US leader expressed growing frustration at Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth,” Trump told reporters. “He’s very nice to us all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was “pretty calm about this. Trump’s way of talking is generally quite harsh, the phrases he uses.”

The two leaders have been in regular contact but this has so far failed to translate into tangible steps towards a ceasefire in Ukraine – something Trump once said he would be able to achieve in a day.

Last week, following a phone call with the Russian president, Trump said he was “very unhappy”.

“He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people, it’s no good,” Trump said of Putin.

The criticism came even as the Trump administration announced a suspension of military aid to Ukraine, reportedly authorised by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Elbridge Colby, the under-secretary of defence for policy.

At least 111 dead, more than 170 still missing in Texas flooding

A search and rescue team looks for people along the Guadalupe River

At least 161 people are still missing in a single Texas county four days after deadly and devastating flash floods hit parts of the state, Governor Greg Abbott said, as hope fades for survivors to be found.

The missing in the hard-hit Kerr County include five campers and a counsellor from Camp Mystic, a Christian all-girls summer camp located on the banks of the Guadalupe River.

At least 111 people have died in the disaster, according to the latest county-by-county tolls published by US media. More than 90 were in the Kerrville area.

Texas is not alone. Neighbouring New Mexico saw a flash flood emergency on Tuesday as well, causing the deaths of at least three people. Up to 8.8cm (3.5in) of rain fell there, causing river waters to inundate the village of Rudioso, officials said. That flood has now receded.

In Texas, frantic search and rescue efforts continue, with Abbott vowing emergency crews “will not stop until every missing person is accounted for”.

Abbott added that it was very likely more missing would be added to the list in the coming days, and urged people to report anyone they think was unaccounted for.

General Thomas Suelzer from the Texas National Guard said search efforts were using Chinook and Black Hawk helicopters with rescue hoists.

He said there were 13 Black Hawk helicopters helping in the search effort, including four that arrived from Arkansas. Authorities have also been using reaper drones.

Responders from various agencies are working together on rescue efforts. They include agents from border patrol, the FBI and the National Guard.

No way for re-run at Ablekuma North -MP Boamah

Patrick Boamah - MP Okaikwei Central

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Boamah, has criticised the stance of the Electoral Commission to conduct a re-run of nineteen polling stations of the Ablekuma North and stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not accept anything save the collation of the results of the remaining three polling stations.

Ballots of the said polling stations are yet to be collated due to disruption of the process on December 7, 2024 that resulted in the destruction of some of the result sheets.

The Lawmaker’s statement comes as a result of Electoral Commission (EC) statement issued on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 by the EC’s Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey.

The said decision was reportedly reached after extended discussions with representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, the MP for Okaikwei Central,in an interview on Kumasi-based radio station, Silver FM, on Tuesday, with William De Bordes (Loving Cee) emphasised that Dr. Bossman Asare indicated the “three uncollated polling stations” to be the reason why the Returning Officer of Ablekuma North could not declare the elections.

The Okaikwei Central Lawmaker said the entire NPP fraternity was shocked when the said statement was issued by the EC, querying that “what happened in the space of three weeks”, for the EC to make a u-turn on its statement.

Patrick Boamah queried “…or the EC is threatened by utterances made by the Chairman of the NDC, three weeks ago, which threatens the dismissal of the EC leadership…”

The MP noted that the EC’s statements issued vis-a-vis Ablekuma North Constituency elections has been contradictory, stressing that it smacks of “puppeteering” and cautioned the EC as an independent body to be firm in its decision-making, as well as ensuring transparency.

He further urged the EC to collate the remaining polling stations to declare the winner of Ablekuma North parliamentary seat, stressing that whoever would dispute the results could challenge it in the law court.

Patrick Boamah also entreated the EC Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa, to do what is right by leaving a legacy and for history to record her as the “bold, firm, fair and fearless ” Commissioner the EC once had.

Aflao market

The Government of Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the People’s Republic of China to construct a modern market at Aflao, fulfilling a key campaign pledge by President John Dramani Mahama.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel OkudzetoAblakwa, announced the development on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating:

“On the express instructions of President John Mahama, the funds will be used to construct a modern market at Aflao, consistent with his promise during the 2024 electioneering campaign.”

He noted that Ghana had previously received a similar grant from China during the Mills-Mahama administration, which financed the construction of the iconic Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast.

“I signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana, while the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, signed for the Chinese Government,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

The new Aflao market, described as a befitting and modern facility, is expected to boost economic activity, improve livelihoods and strengthen trade integration between Ho and Lomé.

Located in one of West Africa’s busiest trading enclaves, the project is seen as a major step toward transforming the area into a regional commercial hub.

George Acheamoong , Assembly Member for Manso Mpatasie

A clash between residents of Manso Mpatasie and national security operatives last Tuesday has left one person injured in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred when security operatives attempted to confiscate excavators believed to have been used for illegal mining.

Kwaku Bobie, leader of the residents speaking with the media

The operatives have embarked on operations to stop illegal mining in the area, but residents and miners became agitated when the security operatives attempted to track down packed excavators, sparking a confrontation.

One person was injured during the clash and was admitted at St. Martin Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum, in the Amansie South District.

The incident has raised concerns about the approach to combating illegal mining and the need for a more practical solution that balances enforcement with community needs and livelihoods.

The leader of the aggrieved residents, Mr. Kwaku Bobie, claimed that the security operatives’ actions were unlawful since the excavators were not found at a mining site.

He expressed the community’s anger, stating that the excavators were being targeted unfairly since they were parked at home.

Mr George Acheamoong, the Assembly member for the community, expressed concerns about the recent activities of security agencies against small-scale miners.

He stated that attacking individuals at their homes could undermine the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining. Some youth in the community appealed to the President, John Dramani Mahama and the government to consider the plight of the youth and put proper measures in place to create job opportunities in the mining sector to absorb the youth.
