Nollywood actor and politician Yul Edochie has sent out a passionate appeal to Ndigbo in the diaspora, especially those currently facing hostility abroad, to return and invest in their homeland.

In a strongly worded message shared on Instagram, Edochie spoke directly to his fellow Igbos, encouraging them to turn their backs on rejection and seek purpose back home.

“Ndi Igbo come back home and invest in Igbo land,” he wrote. “If you’re facing rejection on foreign soil, it’s not a sign to fight anybody, it’s a sign to return home. We have wandered for too long. Home is calling.”

His message comes in the wake of escalating tensions in Ghana, where a series of public protests have seen some Ghanaian citizens demanding that Nigerians, particularly those accused of criminal activities, leave the country. The situation has created fear and uncertainty among Nigerian communities living abroad, including many Igbos.

Edochie framed the current events as a spiritual and cultural wake-up call.

“Our ancestors and spirits in Igbo Land are calling us to return home and develop home. A new dawn has come in Igbo land. It’s time to return home,” he emphasized.

Ending his message with a powerful Igbo proverb, he added:

“Ana amalummasinauno wee puoilo,” — loosely translated as “Beauty is best appreciated when it starts from home.”

Hong Kong battles floods amid heaviest August rainfall since 1884

Hong Kong battles floods

Hong Kong has been hit with record-breaking rains that have seen schools and courts shuttered, hospitals disrupted, and roads badly flooded.

More than 350mm (13.8 inches) of rain had drenched the territory by 2pm (06:00 GMT) on Tuesday, the city’s weather authorities said – the highest daily rainfall for August since 1884.

The storms follow deadly flash floods in Southern China over the weekend, which left five dead in Guangdong province and prompted a large-scale search operation involving more than 1,300 rescuers.

Videos showed water cascading down steep hillsides, breaking into whitewater streams as they rushed down the many staircases linking Hong Kong’s multitiered cityscape.

Weather authorities extended their highest “black” rainstorm warning until 5pm local time (09:00 GMT).

This was the fourth such warning issued in just eight days, breaking the record for the most frequent issuance of the city’s highest weather alert within a single year, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.

The water had risen to ankle height outside Hong Kong’s largest hospital, as medical authorities announced they would be closing clinics across the city due to the downpour. Meanwhile, cars were reported submerged in water.

The weather service warned on Tuesday afternoon that a “persistent rainstorm will cause serious road flooding and traffic congestion”.

Nasa to put nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030 -US media

US space agency Nasa will fast-track plans to build a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030, according to US media.

It is part of US ambitions to build a permanent base for humans to live on the lunar surface.

According to Politico, the acting head of Nasa referred to similar plans by China and Russia and said those two countries “could potentially declare a keep-out zone” on the Moon.

But questions remain about how realistic the goal and timeframe are, given recent and steep Nasa budget cuts, and some scientists are concerned that the plans are driven by geopolitical goals.

Nations including the US, China, Russia, India and Japan are rushing to explore the Moon’s surface, with some planning permanent human settlements.

“To properly advance this critical technology to be able to support a future lunar economy, high power energy generation on Mars, and to strengthen our national security in space, it is imperative the agency move quickly,” US transport secretary Sean Duffy, who was appointed temporary head of Nasa by President Donald Trump, wrote to Nasa, according to the New York Times.

Mr Duffy called for proposals from commercial companies to build a reactor that could generate at least 100 kilowatts of power.

This is relatively small. A typical on-shore wind turbine generates 2-3 megawatts.

The idea of building a nuclear reactor as a power source on the Moon is not new.

In 2022 Nasa issued three $5m contracts to companies to design a reactor.

And in May this year, China and Russia announced they plan to build an automated nuclear power station on the Moon by 2035.

Many scientists agree that it would be the best or perhaps only way to provide continuous power on the lunar surface.

Besieged Sudan city residents face starvation, UN warns

Sudan city residents face starvation

The UN’s food agency has warned that families trapped within the besieged Sudanese city of el-Fasher face starvation. The World Food Programme (WFP) said it had not been able to deliver food to the city in the western Darfur region by road for more than a year.

El-Fasher has been surrounded by paramilitary fighters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for nearly 16 months – determined to seize it from Sudan’s army. The WFP warning comes as local activists have already begun reporting deaths by starvation in the city, which is still home to about 300,000 people.

Sudan was plunged into a civil war in April 2023 after a vicious power struggle erupted between the army and its former ally, the RSF – creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

The UN’s children’s agency (Unicef) has also issued a statement saying malnutrition is rife across the country, with many children “reduced to skin and bones”.

The WFP warning echoes a recent appeal for urgent support from the North Darfur Governor Al-Hafiz Bakhit, who said the living situation in el-Fasher had become unbearable.

Bakhit is aligned with Sudan’s military-led government, which is trying to retain control of the city, its last foothold in Darfur. The RSF’s battle to seize el-Fasher from the Sudanese army has intensified in recent months, after the paramilitaries were driven out of the capital, Khartoum.

UN statistics in early July showed that 38% of children under the age of five in camps for internally displaced people within and near el-Fasher suffered from acute malnutrition.

Netanyahu to propose full reoccupation of Gaza, Israeli media report

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to propose fully reoccupying the Gaza Strip when he meets his security cabinet, Israeli media say.

“The die has been cast. We’re going for the full conquest of the Gaza Strip – and defeating Hamas,” local journalists quote a senior official saying.

Responding to reports that the army chief and other military leaders oppose the plan, the unnamed official said: “If that doesn’t work for the chief of staff, he should resign.”

The families of hostages fear such plans could endanger their loved ones, with 20 out of 50 believed to be alive in Gaza, while polls suggest three in four Israelis instead favour a ceasefire deal to return them.

Many of Israel’s close allies would also condemn such a move as they push for an end to the war and action to alleviate a humanitarian crisis.

Within Israel, hundreds of retired Israeli security officials, including former heads of intelligence agencies, issued a joint letter to US President Donald Trump on Monday, calling for him to pressure Netanyahu to end the war.

One of the signatories, ex-domestic intelligence agency chief Ami Ayalon, told the BBC that further military action would be futile.

“From the military point of view, [Hamas] is totally destroyed. On the other hand, as an ideology it is getting more and more power among the Palestinian people, within the Arab street around us, and also in the world of Islam.

“So the only way to defeat Hamas’s ideology is to present a better future.”

Turkish, Ghanaian charged with stealing

Dansoman Circuit Court

A Turkish national, Kuran Demir Gokhan and a Ghanaian, Mohammed Awudu, have been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly conspiring to steal two vehicles belonging to LCB Worldwide Ghana Limited.

The two, Gokhan, 45, a former Country Manager of LCB Worldwide Ghana Limited, and Awudu, 31, the current Head of Operations have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and stealing, offences contrary to Sections 23(1) and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

They appeared before Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit on July 30, 2025 and both pleaded not guilty.

The court granted each of the accused persons bail in the sum of GH¢460,000, with two sureties, one of whom must be justified with title deeds equivalent to the bail amount.

Chief Inspector Kwadwo Aboagye, prosecuting for the Republic, was directed by the court to file all disclosures and witness statements ahead of the case management conference (CMC) scheduled for August 25, 2025.

Brief Facts of the Case

According to police records, the complainant, Mehmet TalatTanfer, a Turkish national and the CEO of LCB Worldwide Ghana Limited, reported the case to the Regional CID, Accra, on February 19, 2025.

Investigations revealed that on or before January 9, 2025, the accused persons allegedly conspired to sell two vehicles — a Ford F-150 (registration number GS 4680-23) and a Kia Sorento (GC 2433-19) — without the knowledge or approval of the CEO.

The Ford F-150, valued at GH¢450,000 was later traced to Mr. Ibrahim Catalsakal, a buyer who reportedly purchased the vehicle in good faith after due diligence at the DVLA.

The vehicle has since been retrieved and impounded at the Regional Police Headquarters.

During interrogation, Gokhan denied the allegation, claiming that he had verbal approval from the complainant to sell the vehicles.

He further asserted that he had sold over ten company vehicles in the past with similar verbal instructions.

He stated that the proceeds of US$30,000 from the sales were handed to the complainant, with an additional US$6,450 allegedly used for company operations.

However, police investigations found that Gokhan, after being granted police enquiry bail, fled the country to Turkey, despite his passport being retained due to flight risk concerns.

Awudu is accused of assisting in the preparation of a change of ownership document to facilitate the transaction involving the Ford F-150. Following the investigations, the two were charged and brought before the court.

The case is expected to resume on August 25, 2025, for the next hearing.
