EOCO explains armed operation after Shatta Wale accuses officers of raiding home

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has responded to claims made by popular Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale, who alleged that armed officers raided his home during a recent operation.

In a press release, EOCO confirmed that officers from its Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU), in collaboration with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), conducted a lawful operation at a residence in Trassaco Valley Phase 1, Accra. The operation led to the seizure of a 2019 Lamborghini Urus linked to a major financial crime in the United States.

According to the statement, the officers acted professionally and civilly during the search and seizure, which occurred without incident. The agency explained that SARU officers were armed as part of standard safety protocols.

“It is a standard safety protocol for officers of the Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU) to carry weapons while on operations for their safety,” the statement clarified.

Shatta Wale, from whom the vehicle was seized, reportedly pleaded with officers not to make the seizure public, citing concerns over the potential impact on his brand. He was later allowed to voluntarily surrender the vehicle, which is now in EOCO’s custody.

The FBI and the US Department of Justice are expected to submit a formal Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request to the Government of Ghana to facilitate the vehicle’s return to the United States.

EOCO also revealed that Charles Nii Armah and a former senior officer of the National Signals Bureau (NSB) have been identified as persons of interest and will be invited to assist with ongoing investigations.

Russia, China naval forces to carry out joint Asia Pacific patrol

Russia, China naval forces

Russian and Chinese naval vessels plan to conduct a joint patrol in the Asia Pacific region, following recent exercises in the Sea of Japan, Russia’s official Interfax has reported.

Citing a statement on Wednesday from the Russian Pacific Fleet’s press service, Interfax said that ships from the Russian Navy and China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy “will form a new task group to carry out joint patrol missions in the Asia-Pacific region”.

“After replenishing supplies from logistics vessels, the crews of the Russian Navy and the PLA Navy will form a new detachment to carry out joint patrol tasks in the Asia-Pacific region,” the news agency said.

Russia is conducting a series of military exercises with China in response to the build-up of US military potential in the Asia Pacific region, Interfax said, citing Russia’s chief of staff, Valery Gerasimov, in 2022.

Moscow and Beijing have already conducted joint air patrols in the Asia Pacific region since 2019, it added.

The joint patrol announcement comes as the two countries conclude five days of joint naval drills in the Sea of Japan that focused on anti-submarine and air defence missions.

During the final phase of the exercises, Russia’s large anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributs and the corvette Gromky, together with the Chinese destroyers Shaoxing and Urumqi, carried out live-fire drills while crews practised searching for and neutralising a mock enemy submarine, Interfax reported.

Russia’s Pacific Fleet earlier said that the drills were defensive in nature and not directed against any other countries.

One dead and thousands evacuated as wildfire spreads in France

Wildfire spreads in France

An elderly woman has died and another person is missing after a massive wildfire swept through parts of southern France, destroying homes and forcing thousands to flee.

The woman died in her home, seven firefighters have also been treated for smoke inhalation and one person is still missing, authorities said. Two people are in hospital, one of whom is in a critical condition.

The blaze broke out on Tuesday near the village of La Ribaute in the Aude region, and has already burned more than 13,000 hectares (50 sq miles) – an area larger than Paris – making it the largest wildfire in France this year.

More than 1,800 firefighters, supported by 500 vehicles, were deployed to the area.

The main affected villages are Lagrasse, Fabrezan, Tournissan, Coustouge and Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse.

Officials say the fire is advancing rapidly, driven by strong winds, dry vegetation and hot summer weather.

Jacques Piraud, mayor of the village of Jonquières, where at least four houses burned, told Le Monde that around 80% of the village was burnt.

“It’s dramatic. Its black, the trees are completely charred,” he said.

Images show blackened, burnt out cars and people sitting on beaches three hours away where thick black clouds were still visible.

“This is a disaster of unprecedented scale,” firefighter spokesman Eric Brocardi told RTL radio.

At least 25 homes have been destroyed and more than 2,500 households are without electricity. Authorities have closed roads across the region and warned it is still too dangerous for residents who fled on Tuesday night to return home.

President Emmanuel Macron expressed his support for firefighters and local officials on X, saying all government resources were being mobilised. He urged residents to follow evacuation orders and exercise “the utmost caution”.

Trump hits India with extra 25% tariff for buying Russian oil

US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order on Wednesday hitting India with additional 25% tariff over its purchases of Russian oil.

That will raise the total tariff on Indian imports to the United States to 50%.

The new rate shall be “effective with respect to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time 21 days after the date of this order”, the executive order stated.

The US president had earlier warned he would raise levies, saying India “don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine”.

“The Russian Federation’s actions in Ukraine pose an ongoing threat to US national security and foreign policy, necessitating stronger measures to address the national emergency,” according to a White House statement.

“India’s importation of Russian Federation oil undermines US efforts to counter Russia’s harmful activities.”

New Delhi had previously called Trump’s threat to raise tariffs over its purchase of oil from Russia “unjustified and unreasonable”.

In an earlier statement, a spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry, Randhir Jaiswal, said the US had encouraged India to import Russian gas at the start of the conflict, “for strengthening global energy markets stability”.

He said India “began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict”.

Kremlin says US-Russia talks were ‘constructive’ as ceasefire deadline looms

Steve Witkoff and Vladimir Putin met at the Kremlin

The Kremlin has issued a vague statement following talks between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, days before Donald Trump’s deadline to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said the two sides had exchanged “signals” as part of “constructive” talks in Moscow.

He also said Russia and the US had discussed the possibility of strategic cooperation – but refused to share more until Witkoff had briefed the US president.

The US envoy boarded a flight to the US on Wednesday afternoon, according to Russian media. The talks appeared cordial despite Trump’s mounting irritation with the lack of progress in negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.

In images shared by Russian outlets, Witkoff was seen walking around central Moscow with Putin envoy Kirill Dmitriev on Wednesday morning.

Later, images showed Putin and Witkoff – who have met several times before – smiling and shaking hands in a gilded hall at the Kremlin.

There was no immediate comment from the US or Ukraine following the talks, which lasted over three hours.

The US president has said Russia could face hefty sanctions or see secondary sanctions imposed against all those who trade with it if it doesn’t take steps to end the “horrible war” with Ukraine.

Shortly after Witkoff’s departure from Moscow, the White House said Trump had signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on India for buying Russian oil.

The Circuit Court in Tarkwa presided over by MrsHathia Ama Manu, has sentenced Augustine Alavi, a 20-year-old miner, to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for defiling his friend’seight-year-old sister.

Alavi, who pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement was said to have sexually assaulted the victim in an uncompleted classroom.

Police Detective Chief Inspector Adams Mumuni, prosecuting told the court that the complainant is the victim’s mother, while Alavi is a friend to the victim’s elder brother, and they all reside in the same vicinity in Asankragwa in the Western Region.

He said on May 4, 2025, around 9:00 pm, the victim who had closed from evening class was on her way home when she met Alavi and he asked her to follow him to the All-Saint Preparatory School compound, to show her something.

Prosecution said the victim followed Alavi because she knew him, and when they got to the school’s premises, he lured her into one of the uncompleted classrooms and defiled her on some wooden planks parked on the floor.

Detective Chief Inspector Mumuni said after the act, Alavi instructed the victim to discard her pant as it was stained, and she complied, and he further warned her not to tell anyone.

He said as they were heading to their respective homes when they met the complainant who was searching for the victim, and she narrated all that happened to her.

He said a medical form was issued to the complainant on behalf of the victim for medical examination and report.

Detective Chief Inspector Mumuni said the form endorsed by a medical officer was returned to the police on May 5, 2025, indicating that the victim had been defiled.

The prosecutor said Alavi admitted the offence in the presence of an independent witness, led the police to the scene, and recounted how he committed the offence.

Bench Warrant issued for Carpenter accused of possessing narcotics

0
Bench Warrant

The Dansoman Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of a 23-year-old carpenter, Wisdom Dzade, after he failed to appear in court on July 30, 2025.

Dzade is standing trial for possessing narcotic drugs, an offence contrary to Section 2(1) of PNDC Law 236/90. The bench warrant was granted following a request by the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Portia Nuarko.

According to the prosecution, Dzade was arrested on July 25, 2025, at around 3:30 p.m. at the VIP Lorry Station at Circle in Accra, based on a rip-off from a VIP bus station worker and a witness in the case. Dzade was allegedly attempting to send a parcel to Nkoranza.

Upon inspection, the parcel – a shopping bag – was found to contain six oval-shaped pieces of dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellophane, suspected to be Indian hemp.

The substance, which weighed approximately 3 kilograms, was seized by the police and is being retained for forensic examination.

The court heard that in his caution statement, Dzade admitted to transporting the package, claiming it was his first time and that he had brought it from Kpando in the Volta Region for delivery.

However, further investigations suggest Dzade may have been involved in the narcotics trade for some time before his arrest.

Dzade, who resides at Dome in the Greater Accra Region, was charged on the same day of his arrest and was expected to stand trial.

His failure to appear in court last week has now prompted the court to issue the bench warrant, with orders for his immediate arrest.

He is expected to be brought before the court not later than August 6, 2025, as investigations into the case continue.

Mechanic remanded for stealing car, damaging parts

0
Dansoman Circuit Court

A 24-year-old mechanic, Alex Sarfo, has been remanded into police custody by the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly stealing a client’s vehicle and causing damage to vital components of the car.

Alex Sarfo appeared before Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit on July 30, 2025 facing two criminal charges: stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and causing unlawful damage, contrary to Section 172 of the same Act.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Emeila Mensah, Alex Sarfo, who worked at a mechanic shop at Banana Inn, Dansoman, was entrusted with the repair of a Hyundai Elantra saloon car (registration GC 9905-22) by his employer, Emmanuel Tagoe.

The vehicle, owned by one Emmanuel Amaglo, had been brought in for gear box repairs in April 2025.

In May 2025, Tagoe assigned Sarfo to supervise the repairs. However, after test-driving the vehicle, Sarfo allegedly drove it without permission from Dansoman to Kwahu Asaaka in the Eastern Region.

He later contacted Tagoe, falsely claiming the car had broken down at Kasoa and requested funds for repairs. He subsequently abandoned the car at Kwahu Beposo and went into hiding.

Tagoe filed an official complaint on July 8, 2025 after failing to trace Sarfo or the vehicle. Investigators later found the abandoned Hyundai Elantra near the Beposo lorry station.

Upon recovery, the car was found with damages estimated at GH¢11,300 – including a destroyed gear box and ignition key components.

Sarfo was arrested on July 25, 2025 at an MTN office in Dansoman. In his caution statement, he admitted to taking the vehicle to Kwahu Asaaka and abandoning it.

In court, the presiding judge refused bail, citing Section 96(5)(a) of Act 30, and ordered Sarfo to be remanded into police custody pending further investigations, which she directed must be expedited.

The case was adjourned to August 11, 2025.

Benefits of Sweating

0
Sweat

You might view sweat as an annoying side effect of your workout, but it’s actually the stuff that allows us to work out safely in the first place. During exercise, our heart rate and core body temperature increase, and we need sweat—our body’s primary cooling mechanism—to release that heat. But beyond the very important purpose of preventing your body from overheating, there are a few other benefits of sweating that might surprise you.

1. Sweat Hydrates the Skin

For sweating to be effective at cooling us down, it must evaporate, Zuhl says. And when it does, our skin is left with a gritty feeling thanks to the residue of sodium chloride (salt) and minerals in our sweat, explains Jennifer Sawaya, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with U.S. Dermatology Partners Scottsdale. While this might not feel very nourishing, sweat also contains other beneficial properties that are working quietly behind the scenes to nourish our skin.

For example, in addition to water and electrolytes, sweat contains antimicrobial peptides, metabolically active substances, and oils and lipids that help hydrate the skin and maintain a healthy pH and skin microbiome, says board-certified dermatologist Jennifer Chwalek, MD.

This is important work: “A healthy microbiome is important to prevent skin inflammation, infection, and support the barrier function of the skin,” Dr. Chwalek explains. In fact, studies suggest that impaired sweat function—and a lack of sweat’s beneficial properties—can be seen in those with atopic dermatitis (i.e. eczema), a chronic condition that causes skin dryness and inflammation.

So while sweat isn’t a replacement for moisturizing post-shower, it can help maintain a healthy skin barrier, which prevents water loss.

2. It Can Help Fight Acne

You’ve probably read countless times that showering right after a workout is important to remove acne-causing bacteria that contribute to breakouts. And it’s true that wet workout clothes rubbing against the skin can clog pores and lead to pesky bacne, for example. But “the sweat itself is not the problem,” Dr. Sawaya says. In fact, sweat may actually help if you’re dealing with acne.

You can thank sweat’s antimicrobial peptides for that. “Acne is at least partially driven by bacterial growth. The antimicrobial properties in sweat can certainly help fight against some of these pathogenic bacteria,” Dr. Sawaya explains.

That’s not all: “Additionally, the process of sweating results in a natural cleansing of the pores,” says Brian W. Connor, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in Brooklyn, New York. That means sweating can help clear out dirt and acne-causing bacteria.

But you don’t want any of that extra gunk you just sweat out to hang out on top of your skin for too long or it can have the opposite effect. That’s why it’s still important to shower ASAP after any sweat-inducing workout to “remove excess oils and impurities from the surface of the skin and prevent blocking pores, which can lead to acne,” Dr. Connor says.

3. Sweat May Protect You From Infection

In addition to maintaining a balanced skin microbiome and fending off acne, those antimicrobial peptides in our sweat can also help protect you from getting sick, Dr. Chwalek says.

A couple decades ago, researchers discovered that sweat secretes an antimicrobial peptide called Dermcidin which “may serve as a first line of defense against microbial pathogens,” according to a journal article in BMJ. That includes a variety of bacteria and fungi, including the bacteria Staph aureus and E-coli as well as the yeast, Candida albicans, Dr. Chwalek explains. In other words, this secret stuff in your sweat could fight off harmful microorganisms, safeguarding against everything from diarrhea to skin infections to even more serious staph infections.

So while it’s still important to clean your yoga mat and other gym equipment, it’s at least a little comforting to know your body is secreting a natural antibiotic to help protect you while you work out.

4. It Removes Some Toxins from the Body

Eccrine sweat glands, the ones primarily responsible for thermoregulation, release mostly water along with electrolytes like sodium, chloride, and potassium, Zuhl says. However, they can secrete toxins too—hence the anecdotal idea of “sweating out” the alcohol after a night of one-too-many drinks by going for a run.

Unfortunately, the scientific consensus is that sweating plays a minor role when it comes to “detoxifying” the body from alcohol or other toxins compared to the work of your kidneys and gastrointestinal tract, Zuhl says. But while sweating may not speed up detoxification in the way we might hope while nursing a hangover, studies have found concentrations of environmental toxins such as pollutants, BPA, and heavy metals in sweat, he says—meaning sweat may help usher other toxins out of our system.

5. It Makes Your Skin Glow

Unsurprisingly, that sweat-induced detoxification also has perks for our skin, helping to boost its glow. “Sweating enhances lymphatic drainage and detoxification, removing impurities from our bodies and skin that can dull our complexion,” Dr. Sawaya says.

Plus, if you’re working up a sweat from your workout, that also means you’re increasing blood flow to the skin—another way to amp up that radiance. “Exercise increases delivery of oxygen and vital nutrients to the skin which improves overall skin health, complexion, and, of course, provides that immediate and highly sought-after post workout glow,” Dr. Connor says.
