Netanyahu to propose full reoccupation of Gaza, Israeli media report

0
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to propose fully reoccupying the Gaza Strip when he meets his security cabinet, Israeli media say.

“The die has been cast. We’re going for the full conquest of the Gaza Strip – and defeating Hamas,” local journalists quote a senior official saying.

Responding to reports that the army chief and other military leaders oppose the plan, the unnamed official said: “If that doesn’t work for the chief of staff, he should resign.”

The families of hostages fear such plans could endanger their loved ones, with 20 out of 50 believed to be alive in Gaza, while polls suggest three in four Israelis instead favour a ceasefire deal to return them.

Many of Israel’s close allies would also condemn such a move as they push for an end to the war and action to alleviate a humanitarian crisis.

Within Israel, hundreds of retired Israeli security officials, including former heads of intelligence agencies, issued a joint letter to US President Donald Trump on Monday, calling for him to pressure Netanyahu to end the war.

One of the signatories, ex-domestic intelligence agency chief Ami Ayalon, told the BBC that further military action would be futile.

“From the military point of view, [Hamas] is totally destroyed. On the other hand, as an ideology it is getting more and more power among the Palestinian people, within the Arab street around us, and also in the world of Islam.

“So the only way to defeat Hamas’s ideology is to present a better future.”

Turkish, Ghanaian charged with stealing

Dansoman Circuit Court

A Turkish national, Kuran Demir Gokhan and a Ghanaian, Mohammed Awudu, have been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly conspiring to steal two vehicles belonging to LCB Worldwide Ghana Limited.

The two, Gokhan, 45, a former Country Manager of LCB Worldwide Ghana Limited, and Awudu, 31, the current Head of Operations have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and stealing, offences contrary to Sections 23(1) and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

They appeared before Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit on July 30, 2025 and both pleaded not guilty.

The court granted each of the accused persons bail in the sum of GH¢460,000, with two sureties, one of whom must be justified with title deeds equivalent to the bail amount.

Chief Inspector Kwadwo Aboagye, prosecuting for the Republic, was directed by the court to file all disclosures and witness statements ahead of the case management conference (CMC) scheduled for August 25, 2025.

Brief Facts of the Case

According to police records, the complainant, Mehmet TalatTanfer, a Turkish national and the CEO of LCB Worldwide Ghana Limited, reported the case to the Regional CID, Accra, on February 19, 2025.

Investigations revealed that on or before January 9, 2025, the accused persons allegedly conspired to sell two vehicles — a Ford F-150 (registration number GS 4680-23) and a Kia Sorento (GC 2433-19) — without the knowledge or approval of the CEO.

The Ford F-150, valued at GH¢450,000 was later traced to Mr. Ibrahim Catalsakal, a buyer who reportedly purchased the vehicle in good faith after due diligence at the DVLA.

The vehicle has since been retrieved and impounded at the Regional Police Headquarters.

During interrogation, Gokhan denied the allegation, claiming that he had verbal approval from the complainant to sell the vehicles.

He further asserted that he had sold over ten company vehicles in the past with similar verbal instructions.

He stated that the proceeds of US$30,000 from the sales were handed to the complainant, with an additional US$6,450 allegedly used for company operations.

However, police investigations found that Gokhan, after being granted police enquiry bail, fled the country to Turkey, despite his passport being retained due to flight risk concerns.

Awudu is accused of assisting in the preparation of a change of ownership document to facilitate the transaction involving the Ford F-150. Following the investigations, the two were charged and brought before the court.

The case is expected to resume on August 25, 2025, for the next hearing.

A 38-year-old unemployed man, Thomas Kwabena Vordzorgbe, has been sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Circuit Court in Accra, for robbing a Nigerian national of an Itelmobile phone valued at GH¢350.

The sentence was handed down on Monday, August 4, 2025 by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, after a full trial in which the accused was found guilty of robbery, contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Vordzorgbe had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The case, which began on November 11, 2022, was initially presided over by His Lordship Isaac Oheneba Kuffour and later concluded by Her Honour Adjei-Tawiah.

Prosecution was led by Chief Inspector John Gohoho and later taken over by Inspector Rosemond.

Incident Details

According to the brief facts presented in court, the complainant, Blessing Nenya, a Nigerian national from Delta State and resident of Nungua Cocoa Beach, was returning from a night out at a popular joint near Spintex on November 7, 2022.

Around 3a.m. he arrived at the Nungua Shell Filling Station in search of a taxi home.

The accused, Thomas Vordzorgbe, who resides at Nungua Kings-Way, reportedly spotted the complainant and trailed him to the station.

He then confronted Nenya and demanded he surrender his belongings. When Nenya resisted, Vordzorgbe pulled out a machete and slashed the victim on the left hand, leaving him injured and helpless. The assailant then made away with Nenya’sItel phone.

The victim later reported the incident to the Nungua Police Station and was issued a medical form for treatment.

Later that evening, Nenya received information that Vordzorgbe was attempting to sell the stolen phone at the Nungua Lorry Station.

With the help of others, he confronted and identified the accused, leading to his arrest.A search conducted on the suspect revealed the stolen phone in his possession.

In his caution statement to police, Vordzorgbe admitted to the offence.

Following investigations led by Detective Sergeant Simon Ndeog-NaabMigida, the accused was charged and subsequently arraigned before the court.

The six-year custodial sentence is seen as a stern warning to would-be offenders amid rising reports of petty street-level robberies in parts of Accra.

Tema-based political activist found dead in a hotel room

Stephen Adjei Ashietey, popularly known as Moshake

A Tema-based political activist, Stephen Adjei Ashietey, popularly known as Moshake, was found dead in a hotel room at Tema Community 8 (name of hotel withheld) over the weekend.

According to police sources, the manager of the hotel, Mr AsareAddo detected and reported a strong scent emanating from room 006 where the activist had been living for six years.

When a spare key was fetched to open the door, it was not possible, because a key was in the reverse lock, so a carpenter was engaged to force the door open. Moshake’s naked body was discovered between the bathroom and the bed.

The police sources went on that, on the spot investigation revealed that he was suspected to have slipped and hit his head against the fridge in the room.

Due to the advanced state of decomposition and strong odour, the environmental health officers were called in to fumigate the room before the body was taken to the Tema General Hospital Mortuary, for preservation pending further investigation.

The manager, Mr Addo, told The Chronicle that he came to meet Moshake lodging at the hotel six years ago.

He went on that, the political activist, at a stage was unable to pay for the place, yet, he kicked against an idea for him to find a simple single room to rent outside.

Moshake, according to the manager, claimed that the life of a politician was risky hence he preferred the hotelaccomodation.

Consequently, management came to an agreement to let him pay only GH¢500.00 (five hundred Ghana Cedis) weekly.

The manager extolled him for good conduct, however, not without some social excesses as a young man.

That, in the night of Monday July 28, 2025 Moshake reportedly fell down between his room and another, and even though he sustained some facial injuries, the politician refused to be taken to the hospital for treatment.

On Saturday August 2, 2025 I was shocked when the door was forced open to discover his body on the floor, the manager concludes.

When his junior brother, Daniel AshieteyTetteh was reached, he did not mince words by saying that, Moshake distanced himself from the family and as a result, family members have equally stayed away from anything concerning his burial, a burden he is finding difficult to shoulder.

Mistakes To Avoid With Your Shoes

Shoes

You Never Measure Your Feet

When’s the last time a salesperson pulled out one of those steel slide things to measure your feet? (It’s called the Brannock Device.) With age, your arches fall, and gravity and weight stretch ligaments, so your foot can widen and lengthen. Get them sized every time you shop, or at least once a year. One foot often is larger than the other, so measure both and try on the pair. And be sure to stand. Your full weight expands your feet.

Your Heels Are Too High

A study showed that older women who had mainly worn high heels were almost twice as likely to have bunions — painful bony bumps alongside the big toe joints. High heels put pressure on the balls of your feet. This can cause pain, numbness, and even ankle injuries. Doctors suggest a heel height of no more than 2¼ inches. If heels are a must sometimes, wear them as little as possible and go with a comfy low-heeled shoe the next day.

You’re Stuck on Size

Swear you’re an 8 but that 9 fits fine? Ignore the number on the box. So-called size differs across shoe styles and brands. Trace the shape of your foot before you go shopping. If a shoe that catches your eye doesn’t fit your outline, move on. When you get a potential winner, try it out. Can you wiggle all your toes? Does your heel feel snug? (Nix a rigid back. It can cause a bony heel bump called Haglund’s deformity.)

You Think You Can ‘Break Them In’

“Not broken in yet” means “too tight.” Your new shoes should be comfortable right out of the box or off the rack. Be sure to try them on with the socks or hosiery you’ll wear with them, too. Don’t buy a pair the salesperson has to stretch. Yes, your shoes might loosen up over time. But it’s easier to choose another pair than to put your feet through pain and even harm to get there.
You Wear Worn-Out Shoes

Shabby shoes can put too much stress on your heel bone and connected tissues. This can lead to plantar fasciitis, which is when the band of connective tissue under your foot stretches and tears. It’s the most common cause of heel pain, and it hurts a lot. Heel spurs are another painful result of shoes past their prime. These bony growths under your heel bone can form when your foot muscles and heel bone membranes overstretch and strain.

You Think Inserts Aren’t For You

Those shoe insole displays aren’t just for people with “foot problems.” Arch supports can give your shoes a more custom feel. Gel inserts can save the day if you stand up a lot. Heel cups offer extra cushion as your skin thins with age. Try them out in the store if you can. Inserts aren’t serious fixes, though. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or any other foot concerns, see a podiatrist about custom orthotics.

Your Toe Box is Too Tight

Those pointy shoes might look smart, but they spell one tiny toe box. Add high heels, and the pressure on the ball of your foot will smoosh your toes into that tight triangle. This can lead to hammertoe, where your toes (usually the second one) start to curl up at the first joint. The more you wear shoes like this, the more the muscles attached to your toes can weaken. Look for a roomy square or round toe box that lets your toes lie flat.

You Shop for Shoes Online

And if the shoe doesn’t fit … you wear it anyway, because it’s a hassle to return that clunky box, right? There are lots of problems with virtual shoe shopping. The shoes might not fit your foot shape, or they could look great in the photo but be cheaply or poorly made. People — especially women — tend to skew small on size, too. If you keep and wear these bad fits, you’re at risk for calluses, corns, and more serious issues.

You Shop for Shoes in a Hurry

Your feet deserve more than a quick detour into the shoe department. Take your time. Lightly mash the tips to make sure there’s about a half-inch of space from your longest toe to the end of the shoe. Feel the insides for tags or seams that might bug you. If you can, walk around on different surfaces. Notice the balls of your feet. Do you need a wider shoe? Check out the soles. Will they do the job?

You Wear the Same Pair Every Day

You put time and thought into buying your perfect pair. Now you can’t wear them every day? It’s a good idea to rotate your shoes every couple of days. They can use space to breathe. If you sweat a lot, they need a chance to dry out. Your soles and heels will last longer, too. If you keep them clean and in good shape, they’ll serve you even better.

Feature: Way To Go, Sam George, Way To Go!

0
Samuel George Nettey

Sam George has created a good name for himself in international circles and he is going to be respected for a long time to come. Showing qualities of someone born to be a diplomat, one wondered what H.E. John Dramani Mahama saw in him to put him at the head of the communication sector.

But my son, Sam George, came out to prove that he is capable of handling any sector and today, he has become a hero for making service providers to cut down cost of service by increasing the data they sell to customers.

Today, he is blowing hot air over one major service provider on the continent, MultiChoice DSTV.

This South African company, is so determined to milk Ghanaians dry, just as our colonial masters did. Let us compare cost of services it provides in Nigeria and Ghana.

In both countries, DSTV offers six packages. In cost and in provision of channels there are unfair differences when it comes to Ghana and Nigeria. While Ghanaians offered six packages, same as Nigeria, in the case of Ghana there are 1). Padi, with 40+ channels at GH¢59.00/month or $5.62/month; 2). Access, with 75+ channels including 7 HD channels at GH¢99.00/month or $9.43/month; 3).

Family, with 95+ channels including 10 HD channels at GH¢190.00/month or $18.09/month; 4). Compact, with 120+ channels including 20 HD channels at GH¢380.00/month or $36.19/month. 5). Compact Plus, with 135+ channels including 30 HD channels at GH¢570.00/month or $54.28/month and 6). Premium, with 150+ channels including 38 HD channels at GH¢865.00/month or $82.38/month.

With Nigeria, which is also offered six packages, this is what pertains. 1). Padi, with 45+ channels including 1 HD channels at ₦4,400.00/month or $2.86/month; 2). Yanga, with 85+ channels including 7 HD channels at ₦6,000.00/month or $3.90/month; 3). Confam, with 105+ channels including 10 HD channels at₦11,000.00/month or $7.15/month; 4). Compact, with 130+ channels including 20 HD channels at ₦19,000.00 or $12.36; 5). Compact Plus, with 145+ channels including 30 HD channels at ₦30,000.00 or $19.51, and 6). Premium, with 160+ channels including 38 HD channels at ₦44,500.00 or $28.94.

By comparison, Nigeria has a better deal with lower rates than Ghana. For example, with the lowest deal, the Padi, while Nigeriansare charged $2.86/month for 45+ channels including 1 HD channel, Ghanaiansare charged $5.62/month for 40+ channel, but no HD channel. And with the highest, that is Premium, while Nigerians are charged $28.94/month for 160+ channels including 38 HD channels, Ghanaians are charged $82.38/month for 150+ channels including 38 HD channels.

I am in no way condemning Nigeria for this, in fact, one thing, I will always commend Nigerians for, is their nationalistic approach towards their country, Nigeria and their people. Internationally, anything that concerns one Nigerian is the concern of all Nigerians and they have a very patriotic and sensible way of dealing with such situations.

For example, when the privately owned Nigerian airline, Air Peace, was facing problems in UK, the government of Nigeria stepped in to force the English to comport themselves. This is a nation; one should always be proud of.

Ghana is on the opposite perimeter because we take whatever is offered us, even if it is not palatable, and damn any adverse effect it will have on our country and people.

Now, with this new NDC government, exhibiting some nationalistic tendencies, and with firebrand, Sam George in government, Ghana has, at last arrived. For in the case of DSTV, what is the reason why it charges Ghanaians almost three times more than it charges Nigerians, who even receive better services?

Hon Sam Nartey George, my son, in his usual bold and patriotic self, after making Telecom service providers to increase data per cost, he came out and boldly demanded that DSTV must reduce its charges by 30% across board. Meaning Premium charges should be $57.40 or GH¢602.70. I must say, Sam George is been too economical and too lenienton the issue at stake. I would have demanded 60% reduction across board, so that those receiving Premium services will pay $32.95/month or GH¢345.98.

What was DSTV’s response? According its Ghanaian managing director, Mr. Alex Okyere,“It is not tenable to reduce the DStv subscription fees in the manner proposed by the minister,” And all that was in the statement, can be summed up as the company saying, even though the cedi has appreciated 40% to the dollar, it is very committed to keeping prices as low as possible in Ghana so that it does not compromise service quality, therefore no demand for reduction of prices can be justified.

I cannot believe this. Is DSTV saying the quality of service it provides Ghana is the best in the whole of Africa? Is loading 70% of its package with movies and programmes, majority of Ghanaians do not prefer, what it calls quality service? Is charging monthly for the packages whether the subscriber had used up the data or not, what it calls quality service? It’s been quite a while since I subscribed to DSTV, so may I ask whether the company has solved the problem of poor reception during thunderstorms.

MTN is another South Africa company and here if one pays for broadband services, of let us say GH¢865.00, he will receive 584.20 GB of data and this has no expiry date. If he uses the data for eight hours a day, it could last him over two months. This is what good service is about.

And in all this, it is very sad that a full-blooded Ghanaian who heads DSTV Ghana could not negotiate with the mother company in South Africa to beat down the high cost of services for his countrymen and women. He is out there justifying the high prices per package with words only he understands. On whose side is he on? Ghana or DSTV? He seems not to be bothered about how much Ghanaians are being reaped off, so long as he will continue receiving good salary. In this day and age, we still have people who continue to sell out our country and people to the White Man, as in the colonial era. May God blessed this homeland of ours, called Ghana.

Today, the cedi to dollar is $1.00 to GH¢10.50 and so if DSTV is saying even with the cedi appreciation, it will not reduce the price/package, then what will happen, if against all odds the cedi depreciates to GH¢20.00 to $1.00, which will mean GH¢865.00 will be $43.25, will DSTV increase the cost of service? Again, assuming that the cedi appreciated to GH¢5.00 to $1.00, which will mean GH¢865.00 will be $173.00, will DSTV reduce its cost of service or will it be business as usual?

Sam George educated Ghanaians on how much DSTV charges in dollars, for each of the six packages in six African countries. From Premium package to Padi/Basic, the countries are Nigeria ($29.00; $19.60; 12.40; $4.80; $2.70 and $1.95); Liberia ($61.00; $36.00; $23.00; $13.00; $8.00 and $6.36); Angola ($33.00; $27.00; $18.00; $11.00; $6.00 and $3.00); Botswana ($61.00; $43.00; $33.00; $21.00; $10.00 and $6.00); Eswatini ($52.00; $35.00; $27.00; $19.00; $9.00 and $4.00) and South Africa ($51.00; $34.00; $25.80; $18.10; 7.60 and $1.60).

With this, if as I suggested a 60% reduction of cost of all packages, would not be possible, then I will suggest, Ghanaians are made to pay the average of the total charges on the six African countries, mentioned above.

With this, to the Ghanaian DSTV subscriber, Premium should cost, $47.83; Compact Plus, $32.43; Compact, $23.20; Family, $14.48; Access, $7.22 and Padi, $3.82.

And during the negotiations, DSTV must give us good reasons why Nigeria is paying such lower rates per packages, than Ghana. After all, better services are provided Nigerians than are provided Ghanaians. And one thing, there should be no expiry date on the subscription.

I will end by thanking Sam George for this bold initiative to get the best and the most affordable for all subscribers of DSTV in Ghana. If this South African company, is still adamant, then its services must be suspended. I will support that.

All Ghanaians must stand behind Hon. Minister Sam Nartey George.

Bayern legend takes swipe at Luis Diaz £70m switch from Liverpool

0
Luis Diaz

Lothar Matthaus appeared to take a swipe at Luis Diaz after the Colombian joined Bayern Munich from Liverpool.

Diaz made 50 appearances for the Reds in all competitions last season as Arne Slot led the club to Premier League glory in his first season in charge.

He is thought to have first told Liverpool bosses of his desire to leave last summer, but the club held firm.

They later made two separate attempts to agree a contract extension with the left-winger, but failed to convince Diaz due to a gap between offers and demands.

Bayern finally closed on a move for Diaz last week, with a £65.5million move completed following a successful medical.

However, while Diaz detailed his joy after completing a switch to the Bavarian giants, Bayern legend Matthaus claimed the 28-year-old had not been at the top of Vincent Kompany‘s shopping list.

‘Diaz is a good player, but he wasn’t the first choice for this position.’ The 1990 World Cup winner told Sky.

‘We also received rejections, and Max Eberl (Bayern sporting director) mustn’t forget that.’

‘You can’t just sit back and relax in your job anyway. There are still things you’d like to do, both on one side and the other.’

Diaz made his debut for Bayern in a pre-season friendly against Lyon on Saturday.

Kompany’s side secured a 2-1 win courtesy of a brace Michael Olise with Diaz winning the penalty for the former Crystal Palace star’s opener.

Speaking following the game Diaz claimed he still has a lot more to give as he continues to settle at his new club.

He said: ‘I’ll get used to the team bit by bit. I think I personally had a good game.

Man Utd make £74m bid for RB Leipzig striker Sesko

0
Benjamin Sesko

Manchester United have made a bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko with the overall package potentially rising to 85m euros (£73.8m).

The offer includes a guaranteed payment of 75m euros (£65.2m).

The Red Devils are yet to get a response but believe it is an appropriate valuation for the 22-year-old Slovenia forward and that he is keen to move to Old Trafford.

Newcastle United also want Sesko and have made a bid in the region of 80m euros (£69.5m) as they continue negotiations with Leipzig.

The offer from Manchester United is seen as significant as there had been suggestions they did not want to firm up their interest with Leipzig without knowing the forward was prepared to join them.

Manchester United are willing to let Rasmus Hojlund leave the club in order to make space for Sesko to come in.

Sesko has 39 goals in 87 appearances for Leipzig and, at 6ft 5in, he would also bring a significant physical presence to the Old Trafford club’s front line.

Manchester United sources have previously outlined how it is possible for them to reach an agreement on Sesko even though Sir Jim Ratcliffe said earlier this year there was the potential for the club to go bust by Christmas without massive cost-cutting measures.

Payment arrangements for the deals for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo from Wolves and Brentford this summer, which total £130m, have been arranged in a favourable way.

In addition, the entirety of Marcus Rashford’s £325,000-a-week salary is being covered by his loan move to Barcelona and Manchester United received £5m from Chelsea after the Blues pulled out of a deal to sign Jadon Sancho.

Manchester United have also received more than £15m in payments as part of sell-on clauses involving Anthony Elanga, Alvaro Carreras and Maxi Oyedele.

Former Porto captain Costa dies aged 53

0

Former Porto captain Jorge Costa has died aged 53 after having a cardiac arrest at the club’s training centre, the Portuguese side has confirmed.

The defender led Porto to Champions League glory under manager Jose Mourinho in 2004 and won 50 caps for Portugal.

Costa spent a season on loan at Charlton in the Premier League in 2001-02 and retired from playing in 2006.

The centre-back moved into management and held positions at 16 clubs before taking up the role of Porto’s director of professional football last season.

“Throughout his life, both on and off the pitch, Jorge Costa embodied the values that define FC Porto: dedication, leadership, passion and an unshakeable spirit of conquest,” the club said. “He left his mark on generations of fans.”

It is the third unexpected death of an ex-Porto player this summer following the tragic passing of former loanee Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who spent six years at the club, in July.

Costa graduated from Porto’s academy and went on to make 324 appearances for the club.

He won 24 trophies before leaving in 2005, including the Champions League, Uefa Cup and eight Primeira Liga titles.

In 2000, Costa won the Portuguese Golden Ball – an award handed out to the league’s best player.

His managerial career took him across the globe with stints in Portugal, Romania, Cyprus, Tunisia, India and Gabon.

Dias & O’Reilly close to signing new Man City deals

0
Ruben Dias and Nico O'Reilly

Manchester City have reached agreements in principle over new contracts with defender Ruben Dias and midfielder Nico O’Reilly.

Portugal international Dias’ current deal expires in 2027, while academy product O’Reilly’s contract runs until 2028.

Sources have not revealed the length of the new contracts.

Dias, 28, joined City from Benfica for £65m in 2020 and has made 222 appearances for the club, winning four Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup.

City’s injury crisis last season allowed 20-year-old O’Reilly to break through into the first team, with the majority of his 21 appearances coming at the unfamiliar position of left-back.

City are expecting departures from their squad before the end of the transfer window on 1 September.

They are yet to receive offers for out-of-favour midfielders Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips, who is recuperating from Achilles surgery.

Sources have told BBC Sport that clubs in the Premier League including Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, as well as in the Bundesliga, are interested in signing midfielder James McAtee.

The signing of James Trafford leaves City with four senior goalkeepers so Stefan Ortega is the most likely to depart, should any offers come in.

City returned to training on 28 July following their exit from the Club World Cup and are holding an opening training session on Tuesday.
