John Amos, best known for his roles on Good Times, Roots and Coming to America, has died. He was 84.

The Emmy-nominated actor’s son Kelly Christopher “K.C.” Amos confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that he died of natural causes in Los Angeles on Aug. 21.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” K.C. wrote. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over.”

He continued: “Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

“My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life,” he added. “Most recently in Suits LA playing himself and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, America’s Dad. He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”

Julia Buchwald, the president of talent agency Buchwald, also added: “We were so proud to represent John. He was not only a remarkable talent but also a deeply kind and generous soul. His impact on the industry and those who knew him will never be forgotten.”

The news comes nearly one year and four months after Amos entered the hospital due to fluid filling his lower body and causing issues with his heart. At the time, a rep for Amos said the doctors drained all of the fluid and Amos had been on the mend.

The hospitalization came as his daughter Shannon alleged her dad was the “victim of elder abuse” in June 2023, which he denied.

Paul Nii Amu Andrew Darko known in Showbiz as Darkovibes, has explained why himself and some Artistes smoke marijuana known as ‘weed’ ahead of performing at events or during recording sessions.

Speaking on 3FM Darkovibes said although he is an advocate of ‘weed,’ he prefers not possessing the substance when in town.

Darkovibes mentioned that they smoke ‘weed’ only to cool their brains especially when they have had long recording sessions or have to perform at concerts for a longer period.

“We don’t walk around with stuffs like that. Its recreational, if we are singing and recording songs then we use it to cool our brains because sometimes we sing for the whole day, 24 hours or 48 hours. So, it’s just to cool the brains a bit,” Darkovibes stated.

According to him, despite not possessing the substance when in town, he allows authorities to conduct a search on him because he believes it’s the right thing to do.

“They search me. I even allow myself to be searched because if I have a gun or knife on me, they can arrest me but I don‘t even walk around with that.

“It was those days that I walk around with it and was arrested and I said I’m an advocate but that does not mean we should do anything anyhow with it,” he told Giovani Caleb.

Currently, Ghana has legalized the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020 (Act 1019) which allows for cultivation of cannabis or weed for medical and industrial purposes.

Darkovibes is currently promoting his six-track EP, ‘Intercontinental’. The artiste features Richkid and Fadlan on one of the songs on the EP, ‘BieEsor’.

‘Wi-Fi’, ‘Bend your knees’, ‘BieEsor’, ‘Run With My heart’, ‘Missionary’ and ‘Stage’ are the songs on the project which was released on Friday, September 27.

Speaking about the EP in an interview, Darkovibes explained that the inspiration is to blend different cultures he’s experienced on this new project.

Adane Best and Kuami Eugene

Ace Highlife musician, Adane Best has said that he has forgiven Kuami Eugene for allegations of copyright infringement.

In 2018 and 2020, Adane Best claimed that Kuami Eugene’s songs were influenced by his original works.

While speaking on the matter in a recent interview on Asempa Showbiz Review, the ‘Wo Bre Na Wenya’ hitmaker claimed that Kuami Eugene sampled melodies from his songs but added that he has decided to let the matter rest.

“Anybody who knows and understands music very well will know that once you hear a sound or music, you will know that it originates from somewhere. Especially my songs, (he’s sampled) a lot of my songs not only one. I don’t want to mention it on-air.

“It’s an old issue, and I don’t want to dwell on it, let’s forget it,” he said.

“I have forgiven him. I have wronged others before, so when someone wrongs me, like Kuami Eugene, I let it go,” he added.

Adane Best, whose real name is Joseph Amoah, acknowledged Kuami Eugene’s success in the music industry but advised the Lynx Entertainment artiste to continue learning and growing in his craft.

“Kuami Eugene is good, very, very good, and I commend him. But he should keep learning. That’s how it’s done. He doesn’t have to think he knows it all,” Adane Best remarked.

Govt working diligently to deal with galamsey effectively -National Security

Galamsey on Black Volta

The Director of Intelligence Analysis at the Ministry of National Security, Dr. Victoria Sam, has disclosed that the latest set of measures rolled out by the government will culminate in an effective and lasting solution to the illegal mining menace.

In a speech delivered at the opening ceremony of the 4th West Africa Mining Security Conference organised by the Australian High Commission in Ghana, Dr. Victoria Sam cited illegal mining (galamsey) as one of the major issues crippling the Ghanaian mining industry.

Expounding more on the menace, Dr. Victoria Sam explained that it poses significant security and economic threats to Ghana and that the government has instituted measures it believes will help deal with the canker.

She noted that the five-member inter-ministerial committee set up by the president will come up with effective strategies that will help save the country’s water bodies and forest reserves.

Dr. Victoria Sam continued, “One of the nation’s most critical challenges is illegal mining, or ‘galamsey,’ which poses a severe threat to the sustainability of our natural resources and the livelihoods of countless citizens.

“In response, the Honourable Minister for National Security is leading an ad-hoc committee, established by His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to reassess the government’s strategic approach to eradicating galamsey.”

Dr. Victoria Sam declared the openness of the government to collaborations with the diplomatic community and traditional authorities to handle the canker.

“This five-member committee is diligently working to develop more sustainable and effective measures by collaborating with local communities, traditional authorities, and industry experts. This signifies Ghana’s renewed commitment to confronting the menace, which has wreaked havoc on our environment,” she explained.

She also discussed the potential of the mining industry in the West African sub-region as an anchorage for terrorist groups and called for stakeholder collaborations in stemming the spread of terrorist activities in the sub-region.

“The Sahel remains at the forefront of these challenges, with insurgent groups targeting resource-rich areas.

“Mining assets and convoys transporting vital resources are prime targets. Despite the presence of security escorts, militant groups remain undeterred, posing a constant threat to mining operations.

“As terrorism spreads into littoral states, it has become evident that no country in the region is immune to these threats. Furthermore, there is significant evidence that these groups are exploring illegal mining sectors to fund their activities, even in countries where they are not yet operating openly.

“Ghana, in particular, is on high alert and continues to implement a range of measures to fortify its security posture against potential incursions,” she said.

On her part, Berenice Owen-Jones, the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, restated her country’s commitment to security in the West African sub-region.

She stated that Australia appreciates West Africa’s strategic positioning as a hub for mining and will continue to collaborate with various governments and authorities to implement decisive measures against the threats of terrorism in the sub-region.

Berenice Owen-Jones stated that Australia has invested over $10 million in counter-terrorism and will not relent in its efforts to ensure the safety of the mining industry in West Africa.

“We also appreciate that West Africa is home to some of the most challenging operating environments in the world for mining companies. Africa is now recognized as the most active theatre for violent extremism.

“Across the Sahel and other West African countries, expanding terrorist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and Islamic State undermines the prospects for new investment and threatens the lives of both foreign and local workers in the resource sector.

To address the threat, the Australian Government has invested over $10 million in counter-terrorism as well as preventing and countering violent extremism programs in Africa. We have done that through multilateral agencies and through sustainable, locally-driven efforts to counter the threat of terrorism and extremism,” she said.

Women are architects of development -Mahama

Members of NDC women wing and some market Queens at the women's manifesto launching

Former President and Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has described women as not only beneficiaries but architects of development, towards the socio-economic growth of the country.

Speaking at the launching of the NDC women’s manifesto in Kumasi, last Monday, the NDC flagbearer explained that their mission as a political party is the recognition of Ghanaian women partners for development and the  proposal to ensure that women are part of the decision making process, side by side with their male counterparts. .

He stressed that the initiative is not an empty promise but a commitment evident in the nomination of a female running mate, a symbol of his gender-balanced party and government.

According to him, it is long overdue to have a truly inclusive gender balance government.

The NDC Presidential hopeful said despite women’s significant contribution to our national development, gender inequality remains pervasive, particularly in the informal sector where women form a greater majority of stakeholders, an important sector which contributes nearly 30% to GDP.

He noted that the situation has bred poverty among women, as highlighted by the 2020 census, that out of 7.3 million poor people in the country, the majority, which is about 3.8 million are women, which is 54% of the people.

Mr. Mahama commended the NDC women wing for their bold step in taking the where women lead at the highest level of politics and are economically empowered to have access to Education and good healthcare.

He said women play a critical role in our society and the NDC resetting manifesto recognises that women get at least 30% of public positions in the new government.

The former President stressed that the NDC is breaking the eight years of corruption, economic mismanagement, impunity, arrogance and the abuse by the NPP government come the 2024 general elections and to ensure that Ghana has a first female Vice President.

Businesswoman granted bail in connection with KOMARK robbery

0
Accra Circuit Court

Judge Samuel Bright Acquah of the Circuit Court has granted bail to businesswoman Mariama Masaud Dembya, in the amount of GH¢1 million, requiring three sureties, one of whom must be justified.

Dembya pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of stolen property and dishonestly receiving stolen goods during her court appearance yesterday. Her co-accused, Isaac Owusu, was not present when the case was called.

The charges stem from a robbery incident at KOMARK Company Limited at Ashaiman.

Dembya and Owusu are accused of possessing 1,268 boxes of agro-chemicals valued at GH¢1,458,200 which belong to KOMARK.

Additionally, they face charges related to dishonestly receiving these stolen goods.

Background of the Case

According to Chief Inspector Jonas Lawyer, the prosecuting officer, the complainant, Richard Aidoo, a sales representative for KOMARK, reported that on September 8, 2024, five armed men broke into the company’s warehouse, tied up the security personnel, and run away with agrochemicals and other equipment.

During the investigation, police recovered 600 boxes of agrochemicals from Owusu in Kumasi, leading to his arrest.

When interrogated, Isaac said Dembya sold the stolen goods to him.

In her defense, Dembya claimed that she purchased the goods from an unknown individual in Ashaiman, but did not provide further information to assist the police.

Both accused are cooperating with investigators as authorities work to identify additional suspects involved in the robbery.

The court has adjourned the case to October 15, 2024, as the investigation continues.

Editorial: Ministry Of Health Directing Erring Medical Officials To The Police Is Commendable

0
Editorial

It would be recalled that a few months ago an old woman reportedly died, after about a week of being abandoned by the roadside, near a bush. This happened when the Ambulance transporting an accident patient, who was reportedly suffering from what was suspected to be mental illness or dementia, abandoned the old woman by the roadside, at the outskirts of Gomoa Ojobi, leading to her death. This tragedy brought to light serious issues surrounding patient care and the responsibilities of healthcare professionals.

In response, the Minister for Health, Dr. Benard Okoe Boye, has taken a bold stance, directing that the alleged conduct of erring officials be reported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Attorney General’s Department for further scrutiny. The events leading to this investigation began when the Ghana Health Service (GHS) conducted an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the patient’s evacuation. Their findings revealed that the staff involved failed to act appropriately, leading to severe consequences for the patient.

The GHS committee recommended that disciplinary actions be taken against the implicated employees, emphasising the need for internal sanctions. However, in light of the gravity of the situation, marked by the tragic loss of life, the Ministry of Health recognised that mere internal reviews would not suffice.

First of all, we commend the Minister for taking a bold step to address the issue. His call for further investigation by the Attorney General’s office is a crucial step in ensuring that justice is served. It reflects a growing acknowledgment that the healthcare system must be held accountable, not only to patients but also to the broader public that relies on it for safety and care. We believe that by seeking the involvement of the CID and the Attorney General, the Ministry is indicating that it takes this incident seriously and is committed to holding culprits responsible for their actions.

Yet, as we stand at this pivotal moment, it is essential to emphasise that these actions should not remain confined to bureaucratic processes. The commitment expressed by the Ministry of Health must translate into concrete measures that address systemic failures within the healthcare system. The public has a right to expect transparency and accountability, particularly when a life is lost due to negligence or mismanagement.

The situation at our hospitals highlights a pressing need for reform within our healthcare. Healthcare professionals are entrusted with the lives of patients, and when that trust is violated, the repercussions can be devastating. The incident should catalyse a thorough review of existing protocols and training for healthcare staff, ensuring they understand not only their duties but the moral and ethical implications of their roles.

Moreover, the Ministry of Health must prioritise creating an environment where accountability is the norm rather than the exception. This could involve regular audits, open forums for discussing grievances and a more robust system for whistleblowers to report misconduct without fear of retribution. The tragic circumstances surrounding this incident should serve as a catalyst for creating a culture of safety and responsibility within healthcare settings.

Furthermore, the Ministry has reiterated its dedication to the recommendations made by the GHS committee. This commitment must be followed by actions that resonate with the public’s expectations.

The report detailing the findings of the GHS committee is available on the Ministry’s website, signifying transparency in the investigative process. However, public trust can only be restored through demonstrable actions that prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

This tragic incident must not fade into memory without effecting meaningful reforms. The lives of patients depend on the actions taken today, and it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure that their voices are heard and that justice is served. It is time for words to be matched with deeds, and for the Ministry to transform its commitments into a robust structure for accountability and improved patient care.

‘External editing of voters register is in line with international practices’

0

Dr John Gartchie Gatsi, a professor of Finance, says external auditing of the voters’ register after registration of new voters is a procedure in line with global best practices.

He said external audit forms a key part of rebuilding electoral integrity using cross-verification methods in the international Elections Management space.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Financial Forum public lecture series held on the theme: “Ghana’s Pain Point”, he said “examples are Kenya, conducted by KPMG in 2017; Mexico, Ernst & Young in 2006 and 2012; Zimbabwe, PWC in 2018 and in Tunisia by UNDP in 2011, which all led to the finding of data integrity issues.

“I, therefore, encourage the Electoral Commission and Political Parties to prioritise the integrity and credibility of the Voters Register by conducting the audit so that the time factor is not used to blackmail the process,” said

Prof Gatsi, also the Dean of the School of Business, University of Cape Coast (UCC), advised the EC to consider third-party validation or external audit as a priority, especially when it is partly funded by the international community.

“A call for audit does not take away the independence of the EC. The argument that, bringing an independent IT Audit firm to conduct an audit for the EC means the independence of the EC is violated is just a defense mechanism which is not supported by law,” he said.

At the end of the voters’ register exhibition exercise from July 15 to July 24, this year, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) called for a forensic audit of the register.

The call comes after the detection of irregularities and some errors which the EC said had mostly been resolved through internal audit, hence no need for forensic audit.

Despite the NDC embarking on demonstration on September 17 to demand for the forensic audit, the EC is yet to consider the request.
