Nigeria Moving Towards Dictatorship, Abject Hunger, PDP Govs Warn

PDP Governors Warn

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) has warned that Nigeria is daily moving towards full-blown dictatorship, insecurity and worsening hunger.

A statement signed by the Director General of the Forum, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, on behalf of its chairman, Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, as Muslim faithfuls celebrate the Eid-el-Maulud all over the world, called on Nigerian leaders to address the menace.

“Today, our country is at a crossroad as Nigerians get disconnected from the constituted services they deserve. As we inch daily to full-blown dictatorship with its attendant abuse of power and citizens live in abject penury in the face of plenty, leadership is once again called to urgently address insecurity, our compromised judicial system, failed economic policies resulting in intolerable hunger, poverty and unemployment,” the Forum said.

The governors also pointed to the lessons of the Prophet Muhammad.

“His message of peace, tolerance, and service to humanity resonates deeply across all faiths and cultures. As we reflect on his legacy, may we be inspired to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote understanding, and work together toward a more harmonious society,” the statement added.

The governors said the day should remind leaders to restore trust in the country.

“Let this day be a reminder of the values we should uphold and share — public service with accountability, kindness without expectation, humility, and the pursuit of truth to rebuild the faith of our citizens in our country,” the Forum said.

They also wished Muslims a peaceful Eid al-Maulud celebration.

Be filled with joy, prayer, and meaningful connection with loved ones. Wishing you a peaceful and blessed Eid-el-Maulud,” it added.

Governor Zulum with military personnel after suspected terrorists killed 5 soldiers

Five soldiers and 58 civilians have been killed in a fresh attack on Daral-Jamal, a community along the Bama-Banki road in the Sambisa Forest.

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists struck the community on Friday night, burning down over 20 houses, vehicles, foodstuffs and other valuables belonging to the resettled Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The community hosts a military base on the Nigeria-Cameroon border in a zone ravaged by jihadist attacks.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Saturday, visited the community to condole with families of the 63 people killed by Boko Haram insurgents.

Visibly moved by the incident, Zulum met with community leaders and consoled the bereaved families. He expressed grief and condemned the brutal attack in the strongest terms.

Speaking to journalists, the governor said, “We are here to commiserate with the people of Darajamal over what happened last night that has claimed the lives of many people. It is very sad. This community was settled a few months ago, and they go about their normal activities, but unfortunately, they experienced a Boko Haram attack last night. Our visit is to commiserate with them and build their resilience.”

“At this moment, we have confirmed that 63 people lost their lives, both civilians and military, although the civilian casualties are more. Close to about 60 civilians and five soldiers lost their lives.”

Noting the challenges faced in the fight against insecurity, Zulum also called for the immediate deployment of the newly trained Forest Guards to complement the military in safeguarding vulnerable communities.

Also, the Senator representing Borno Central, Kaka Shehu Lawan, whose constituency, Darajamal falls under, has condemned the attack, describing it as a crime against humanity. He expressed his commitment to supporting Governor Babagana Umara Zulum through legislative backing to restore peace in Borno State.

Government rolls out N75m to tackle unemployment among youths

Unemployment among youth

The federal government, through the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), has launched an N75 million innovation challenge aimed at creating pathways for young inventors to transform their ideas into viable enterprises and tackle youth unemployment in Nigeria.

The programme, launched in collaboration with AfriLabs, was announced on Thursday at the GITEX Nigeria Startup Festival in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Anas Balarabe Yazid, Special Adviser on Commercialisation to the Executive Vice-Chairman of NASENI, said the aim of the challenge is to identify and grow local innovations.

“The initiative is designed to find, fund, and fast-track the best homegrown products into solutions that work locally and can scale globally,” he explained.

Yazid encouraged young innovators to take advantage of the platform, stressing that ideas do not have to be perfect before submission.

“If you’ve built something that works, even if it’s rough around the edges, this stage is for you,” he said.

The competition will shortlist five innovations per state and the FCT. The public will vote for state winners, after which finalists will pitch their ideas at the NASENI Invention Festival.

Winners stand to gain not only cash prizes but also access to NASENI’s Innovation Hub in Abuja, where they will be supported with technical resources, laboratories, and manufacturing facilities.

Highlighting the importance of state-level support, Yazid said governors and the FCT minister have been invited to complement NASENI’s backing.

“The seed planted here can grow right at home,” he said, urging states to provide matching support for their winners.

On the vision behind the project, he added:

“Build here, sell to the world. Innovation lives in every LGA — let’s give it a lift. With the right support, Nigerian ingenuity becomes Nigerian industry.”

The National Bureau of Statistics said that Nigeria’s unemployment rate stood at 4.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2024; however, the latest figure is yet to be released as of filing the report. Credit: dailypost.ng

Second World Shea Expo ends in Tamale

0

The second edition of the World Shea Expo has ended in Tamale with a renewed call on stakeholders to harness opportunities in the shea value chain to empower women and youth-led enterprises.

The three-day event was held on the theme: “Empowering Women and Youth-led SMEs in the Shea Value Chain: The Role of Government and Financial Institutions.”

It was organised under the auspices of the Office of the President through the Presidential Initiative on Agriculture and Agribusiness in partnership with the Savannah Golden Tree Limited, Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Northern Development Authority, EXIM Bank, Tree Crop Development Authority and Cocobod among others.

Participants included women cooperatives, youth-led businesses, processors, exporters, financial institutions, traditional and religious leaders, as well as members of the media.

The Expo featured exhibitions, panel discussions, investment forums, policy dialogues, training workshops and field visits aimed at unlocking new opportunities in the shea industry.

Madam Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Chief of Staff, described the initiative as timely, noting that it amplified the voices of women, who she referred to as “the unsung heroines of the shea industry.”

She said the Expo was not only positioning Ghana and Africa as leading producers of raw shea nuts, but also as hubs for processing, innovation, and value addition in the global market.

Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor, Director of Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness, said even though about one million women and young people were involved in the shea value chain, many were excluded from meaningful economic benefits due to limited access to finance, weak infrastructure and inadequate policy support.

He announced that government was revamping the Buipe Shea Processing Factory, which, when operational, would have the capacity to process more than 60,000 metric tonnes of shea nuts annually, with the potential to peak at 180,000 metric tonnes under 24-hour operations.

“The factory will create between 300 and 1,000 direct jobs and more than 10,000 indirect jobs, while providing an anchor for a network of smallholder cooperatives across Northern Ghana,” he said.

Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, highlighted the cultural, economic and environmental importance of the shea tree, stressing the historic role of women in nut collection and processing.

He called for collaborative efforts to address challenges facing the sector, including limited access to finance, modern technology, and formal markets.

He further gave assurance that government, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, remained committed to creating enabling environment for women and youth-led enterprises through supportive policies, regulatory reforms, and equitable access to resources.

Tree Crops Development Authority CEO calls for synergies to boost shea sector

0
Tree Crops Development Authority

Dr Andy Osei Okrah, Chief Executive Officer of the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA), has urged stronger collaboration among stakeholders to safeguard and transform Ghana’s shea industry into a multi-billion-dollar economic powerhouse.

Delivering his closing remarks at the 2025 World Shea Expo in Tamale, Dr Okrah underlined the need for synergies between government agencies, development partners, value chain actors, researchers and traditional authorities.

He said such partnerships were crucial to address challenges such as rampant bushfires and the indiscriminate felling of shea trees.

“With the right regulations, licensing and policy frameworks, we can unlock the full potential of the shea industry,” he stated, adding “We can also position it as one of the pillars of Ghana’s economy.”

The shea sector is one of six strategic tree crops under the TCDA. The 2025 edition was held under the theme: “Empowering Women and Youth-led SMEs in the Shea Value Chain: The Role of Government and Financial Institutions.”

Dr Okrah said shea had massive potential to generate billions of dollars annually through value addition, innovation and industrialisation. He explained that the TCDA’s Shea Sector Plan aligned with President John Dramani Mahama’s Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda. The agenda prioritises production, processing and job creation.

Dr Okrah urged traditional leaders, private investors, farmer groups and value chain actors to join hands with the Authority.

He said the goal was to build a sustainable shea industry by 2030. The plan, he said, sought to create jobs, empower women and expand opportunities for youth. These opportunities would particularly benefit the northern regions.

“As part of our strategy, we are collaborating with the National Service Authority to encourage young people to venture into shea cultivation,” he said.

“By planting more trees and boosting productivity, we can secure the future of the shea industry,” he added.

Dr Okrah announced that the TCDA was working with other government agencies to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), tricycles and logistical support.

These, he said, were to ease the burden on women who dominated nut-picking activities within the shea value chain. “To sustain the shea sector, we need innovation,” he added.

He urged researchers and academia to partner with the Authority in developing climate-resilient shea varieties. Such varieties should be able to bear fruit within shorter cycles.

The TCDA was established under Act 1010 of 2019 with the mandate to regulate and develop six priority tree crops; cashew, shea, mango, coconut, rubber and oil palm.

Its role includes promoting research, enforcing regulations, facilitating marketing and coordinating stakeholder activities to ensure long-term productivity and sustainability.

It also oversees compliance with export policies, requiring permits for the export of unprocessed tree crops.

This is to encourage value addition locally and retain raw materials for domestic industries. Shea butter, extracted from the nuts of the Vitellariaparadoxa tree, is widely used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and the food industry.

It is valued for its moisturising and healing properties and forms an important export commodity for Ghana. The shea industry supports the livelihoods of about 500,000 households in Ghana, with nearly 900,000 women engaged in nut-picking and processing.

Globally, the shea trade continues to expand, with Ghana ranking among the top producers and exporters.

Dr Okrah commended the organisers and development partners for successfully hosting the Expo.

He reaffirmed TCDA’s commitment to streamlining regulations, strengthening partnerships and driving value addition in the shea industry. According to him, these steps will make the sector a key contributor to Ghana’s economic transformation.

Ayikoi Otoo Questions Fairness of Article 146 Committee Findings

0
Mr Ayikoi Otoo

Former Attorney General in the Kufuor administration, Ayikoi Otoo, who is also counsel for the dismissed Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaba Sackey Torkornoo, has raised serious concerns about the conduct of the Article 146 Committee led by Justice Gabriel Pwamang.

Speaking on NEWSFILE programme on Joy FM over the weekend, Otoo accused the committee of hurrying its work and ignoring due process in submitting the first of three findings to President John Dramani Mahama. According to him, this rushed approach compromised fairness and transparency, effectively burying justice.

Alleged Haste and Procedural Irregularities

Otoo questioned why the committee presented its findings before hearing all submissions. “This is just most unfair. The whole thing they have done is wrong and they are just in a hurry,” he said. He revealed that his team had been told there would be an adjournment, only to discover that a decision had already been taken.

He expressed concern that the committee’s haste could have been intended to pre-empt other judicial or ECOWAS decisions. “If somebody does not want us to speculate, we would go ahead and speculate. Why? What is the rush for? One week, as she herself put it, what would have spoiled it?” Otoo asked, highlighting that even a short extension could have allowed the process to be completed fairly.

Otoo also criticized the committee for only considering evidence from one side. “You listened and now you are quoting things from their submissions. Have you seen ours to see what responses we gave?” he asked. Drawing on his more than forty years of legal experience, Otoo said the approach undermined procedural fairness and the principles of natural justice.

He stressed that the Chief Justice’s travel arrangements and per diem entitlements were in full compliance with the judiciary’s policies. “Please, don’t trivialize it. The travel policy emanated from the Judicial Council, of which Pwamang has been a member. The Chief Justice is entitled to travel with persons of her choice, and per diem arrangements were proper,” he explained.

On Financial Allegations

The former Attorney General addressed claims that the Chief Justice’s foreign travel constituted unlawful expenditure. He noted that auditors had reviewed the travel records, accepted the explanations provided, and raised no objections in their management letter. “Once auditors look at the record and raise issues, and explanations are given, the matter ends. There was no objection after that,” Otoo emphasized.

He also faulted the committee for disregarding documents tendered by Tsatsu Tsikata, which clarified that certain financial policies did not apply to the judiciary due to its constitutional independence. “We allowed it to be defended and bring it out to show that it does not apply to them,” he said.

Questioning Misbehavior Allegations

Otoo challenged the committee’s findings that the Chief Justice’s administrative decisions amounted to stated misbehavior under Article 146. He highlighted routine transfers, IT oversight duties, and e-justice system management as normal functions of her office, not misconduct.

“When someone discharges their duties as head of department or IT expert, and manages the e-justice system, how does that constitute misbehavior? Where is this defined in the constitution?” he asked, emphasizing the absence of clear evidence to justify her dismissal.

On Article 146 and Due Process

The former Attorney General argued that Article 146 provides that a justice of a superior court can only be removed for stated misbehavior, incompetence, or inability to perform their functions. He questioned the committee’s interpretation and evidence, insisting that the findings against the Chief Justice lacked merit.

“I am disappointed. Where is the evidence? All the things they are claiming, were they accepted? The committee has failed to prove any of it,” Otoo said. He stressed the importance of procedural fairness and adherence to constitutional safeguards, warning against the erosion of judicial independence.

The Phia founder raved about her new flame, saying he’s not on social media on Thursday’s episode of her and Sophia Kianni’s “The Burnouts” podcast.

“It’s amazing. It’s the best thing ever. And this is completely new for me. I’ve never been with someone like this,” she added.

Phoebe neglected to share any other identifying details about her new beau, but told her listeners that she bonds with him by sharing the videos she makes for her brand.

“I’m like, ‘Okay, well, sit on down, bud. Let me show you the new video that we just dropped on the Phia account because I put my left titty into producing this thing, okay? So, you’re going to sit here, and you’re going to watch it.’ And he’s like, ‘Okay,’ ” Phoebe said.

A rep for Phoebe did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
