Establish special courts for corruption cases -Gov Sule tells NASS

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule

Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has called on the National Assembly to establish special courts dedicated to handling corruption cases in the country.

Governor Sule made the call Friday at the combined passing-out parade of 404 cadets of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) held at the Nigeria Police Mobile Force Training College in Ende Hills, Akwanga Local Government Area.

He commended the EFCC for its rigorous training program and its successes in the anti-corruption fight, which resulted in over 4,000 convictions last year.

However, he expressed concern that the impact of the work was being undermined by delays in the justice system.

Governor Sule stated that cases often took too long, risking the possibility that individuals charged with corruption might escape justice and that the EFCC could lose interest in prosecuting old cases.

He emphasised that creating a special court would speed up the hearing and determination of corruption cases, a reform that is particularly timely as the nation is currently engaged in a process to review its 1999 Constitution.

According to him, the ongoing review presents a window of opportunity for the National Assembly to consider and enact significant changes to strengthen national institutions.

“I call on the members of the National Assembly to consider a special court to try cases of corruption in the country. Once we do that, then we can have a country that people are happy with.

“For some of us who have lived outside our country, we know that other countries see us as if we are not serious. The moment we have convictions in managing these kinds of cases, then the world is going to take us seriously,” he stated.

NBA demands release of abducted Lawyer Udoka

Peace Udoka, the abducted lawyer

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Sunday demanded the release of Peace Udoka, a young lawyer abducted with her sister by gunmen in Kogi State a day after her call to the bar.

Udoka, a member of the National Youth Service Corps serving in Kogi, was kidnapped along the Lokoja-Okene highway on Saturday while travelling from Abuja to Benin City.

A day after the incident, NBA President, Afam Osigwe, described the abduction as “shocking and deeply concerning.”

In a statement via X on Sunday, Osigwe called on security agencies to act immediately.

“The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) @NigBarAssoc has received with shock and deep concern the distressing reports of the abduction of one of our young colleagues, Onyesom Peace Udoka, a newly called lawyer, alongside her sister, around the Lokoja–Okene axis in Kogi State while returning from the recent Call to Bar Ceremony in Abuja,” the post read.

“This tragic development is unacceptable and utterly condemnable. It is heartbreaking that at a time when our nation should be celebrating the future of the legal profession, young lawyers and their families are subjected to such harrowing ordeals. No family should have to endure this trauma, and no citizen should live under the constant fear of insecurity on our roads.

“The NBA strongly calls on the Federal Government and all relevant security agencies to rise to the occasion, act with urgency, and ensure the immediate and safe release of our colleague and all others in captivity. The safety and security of Nigerians cannot continue to be treated with levity. It is the primary duty of government to protect the lives of its citizens, and this duty must be discharged with the seriousness it deserves.

“We further demand intensified and sustained action to secure our highways and restore public confidence in the ability of government to guarantee the safety of all who travel across the country.

“The NBA stands in solidarity with the families of the abducted victims in this difficult time, and we pray that God grants the victims a safe and speedy return to their loved ones.”

The Lokoja-Okene axis, linking the federal capital to the southwest, has become a hotspot for kidnappings.

On September 8, gunmen attacked an 18-seater bus, killing one person and abducting three passengers.

Nigeria’s Problem Did Not Begin With Tinubu’s Govt —Akume

0
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, says the challenges confronting Nigeria did not begin with the current administration and that President Bola Tinubu has embarked on bold reforms to tackle some of the challenges.

He stated this on Sunday at a special service oragnised to mark the 65th Independence Day Celebration at the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja.

Senator Akume noted that every Nigerian has a role to play in building the nation.

According to him, “Each Nigerian has a role in building the Nigeria that we deserve.”

He reiterated the commitment of President Tinubu to transforming the nation, as he noted some of the reforms that the President has embarked upon, including the removal of subsidy among others.

“The President needs the support of every Nigerian.

“What President Bola Tinubu is doing today could have been done 39 years ago.

“But, I believe that at the end of the tunnel, there is light,” the SGF said.

He further called for cooperation among the three arms of government.

“We must always cooperate, Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary,” he said.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation said today’s Independence Day celebration is not just a day to celebrate Nigeria’s freedom from colonial rule, but also a day to honour the founding fathers of the country who fought for the independence of Nigeria.

The Benefits of Vitamin C

0

Vitamin C is one of the safest and most effective nutrients. Though it may not be the cure for the common cold, the benefits of vitamin C may include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling. The tolerable upper intake level (or the maximum amount you can take in a day that likely won’t cause harm) is 2,000 milligrams (mg)a day for adults.

How Much Vitamin C Is Enough?

“The safe upper limit for vitamin C is 2,000 milligrams a day, and there is a great track record with strong evidence that taking 500 milligrams daily is safe,” Moyad says.

But keep in mind that while many people may not always get the optimal level of vitamin C, having a vitamin C deficiency is very rare in the U.S. and many other countries. Vitamin C deficiency is mainly seen in malnourished adults. In extreme cases, it can lead to scurvy — characterized by weakness, anemia, bruising, bleeding, and loose teeth.

Moyad says there is no real downside to taking a 500-milligram supplement, except that some types may irritate the stomach. That’s why he recommends taking a non-acidic, buffered form of the vitamin.

Food is the best way to get all your nutrients. Along with vitamin C, you’ll get other vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber if you’re eating fruits, vegetables, or other produce.

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. It’s involved in many body functions, including formation of collagen, absorption of iron, the proper functioning of the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.

Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants that can protect against damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals, as well as toxic chemicals and pollutants like cigarette smoke. Free radicals can build up and contribute to the development of health conditions such as cancerheart disease, and arthritis.

The body doesn’t store vitamin C, so overdose is not a concern. But it’s still important not to exceed the safe upper limit of 2,000 milligrams a day to avoid stomach upset and diarrhea.

Vitamin C is one of the “water-soluble” vitamins. Because your body doesn’t store them, you need to keep them in your diet all the time to maintain healthy levels. Eat vitamin-C-rich fruits and vegetables raw, or cook them with minimal water so you don’t lose some of the water-soluble vitamin in the cooking water.

Vitamin C is easily absorbed both in food and in pill form, and it can enhance the absorption of iron when the two are eaten together.

The Health Benefits of Vitamin C

No one vitamin can override serious health problems. They often work together – and other lifestyle habits – like getting enough sleep and exercise, and not smoking – are key. That said, research shows that vitamin C may offer health benefits in these areas:

  1. Stress.A deficiency in vitamin C is associated with many stress related disease. It is the first nutrient to be depleted in people who drink too much alcohol, smoke, or have obesity. And because vitamin C is one of the nutrients sensitive to stress, Moyad says maintaining levels of vitamin C can be an ideal marker for overall health.
  2. Colds. When it comes to the common cold, vitamin C is not a cure, but some studies show that it may help prevent more serious complications. “There is good evidence taking vitamin C for coldsand flu can reduce the risk of developing further complications, such as pneumonia and lung infections,” says Moyad.
  3. Stroke. Although research has been conflicting, one study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that those with the highest concentrations of vitamin C in their blood were associated with 42% lower stroke risk than those with the lowest concentrations. The reasons for this are not completely clear. But what is clear is that people who eat plenty of fruits and vegetables have higher blood levels of vitamin C.

“People who consume more fruit and vegetables will not only have higher [blood] levels of vitamin C, but higher intake of other nutrients potentially beneficial to health, such as fiber and other vitamins and minerals,” study researcher Phyo K. Myint said in an email interview.

  1. Skin Aging. Vitamin C affects cells on the inside and outside of the body and it’s antioxidant properties can be beneficial when it comes to aging. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined links between nutrient intakes and skin aging in 4,025 women aged 40-74. It found that higher vitamin C intakes were associated with a lower likelihood of a wrinkled appearance, dryness of the skin, and a better skin-aging appearance. In addition, topical treatments with Vitamin C have been shown in some studies to reduce wrinkles

Other studies have suggested that vitamin C may also play a role in:

  • Improving macular degeneration.
  • Reducing inflammation.
  • Lowering the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Argentines demand justice at protest against brutal killings of young women

Thousands march in Argentina over murder of girl and two young women

Thousands of people have taken part in an anti-femicide protest in Buenos Aires, demanding justice for a girl and two young women who were tortured and murdered in a crime that has shocked Argentina.

The brutal killings of 15-year-old Lara Gutierrez, and Morena Verdi and Brenda del Castillo, who were both 20, were livestreamed on social media.

Police believe a drug-trafficking gang was responsible, and that the crime was broadcast as a warning to others.

They had arrested five suspects – three men and two women – as of Friday, according to National Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, but a 20-year-old Peruvian man they say is the group’s leader remains at large.

The victims were lured into a van believing they were headed for a party on 19 September, according to investigators.

But authorities said this was part of a plan to “punish” the girl and young women for violating gang code, serving as a warning to others.

One of the detainees revealed a video of the incident under questioning, according to Javier Alonso, security minister for the Buenos Aires province.

In it, a gang leader is heard saying: “This is what happens to those who steal drugs from me.”

Authorities have released a photograph of the alleged Peruvian mastermind in the hope he is recognised.

The bodies of the three victims were found buried at a property in a southern suburb of Buenos Aires on Wednesday, five days after they went missing.

Trump orders deployment of troops to Portland and authorises ‘full force’

President Donald Trump

Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of troops to Portland, Oregon, authorising use of “full force” if needed, to suppress protests targeting immigration detention centres.

The US president claimed the move would help protect “any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists”, characterising the city as “War ravaged” in a Truth Social post.

The announcement marks a further expansion of troop deployments in US cities, amid a wider crackdown by the Trump administration on illegal immigration.

The latest move has drawn pushback from Democratic lawmakers, who said there was no need for federal troops to be deployed to Portland.

“There is no national security threat in Portland. Our communities are safe and calm,” said Oregon Governor Tina Kotek. Kotek told a news conference on Saturday that “any deployment would be an abuse of power”, and said she was working with Oregon’s Attorney General Dan Rayfield “to see if any response is necessary”.

“We will be prepared to respond if we have to,” she added.

Trump’s post does not specify whether he intends to activate national guard or regular US military – nor what is meant by the use of “full force”.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland has been targeted by protesters since early June, sometimes leading to violent clashes.

Zelensky condemns ‘vile’ Russian strikes lasting 12 hours

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

A Russian aerial bombardment that lasted more than 12 hours has killed at least four people and injured at least 70 others in Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the deaths all occurred in the capital, Kyiv, where many of the projectiles were aimed, and the victims included a 12-year-old girl.

The barrage – involving nearly 600 drones and several dozen missiles aimed at seven regions of Ukraine – is one of the heaviest in recent months.

Zelensky warned that Ukraine would retaliate and said the “vile” attack showed Moscow “wants to continue fighting and killing”. Russia said it struck military facilities and industrial enterprises supporting Ukraine’s armed forces.

For Ukrainians, aerial bombardments can be both random and routine.

They tend to occur late on Saturday evenings – in this case, the first sirens were heard at 22:00 GMT.

The sound of anti-aircraft fire was punctuated with occasional explosions – presumably either from the sound of an intercepted drone or one hitting its target.

In Kyiv, the country’s air alert app urged people to head to shelters and stay there. They were followed by pings warning of an increased aerial threat as hundreds of drones descended on the city.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister Igor Klymenko said that at least 100 civilian sites had been damaged across the country by the attack, with entire neighbourhoods lefts in ruins.

Emergency services said an attack on Kyiv’s Institute of Cardiology had killed a nurse and a patient.

A large bakery, an automobile rubber factory, as well as apartment buildings and civilian infrastructure were also targeted, Zelensky said.

At least 39 dead in crush at political rally in India

A political rally in India

At least 39 people have died, including children, in a crush at a political rally in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, officials say.

Tens of thousands of people had gathered on Saturday at a campaign event for actor-turned-politician Vijay, in the southern Karur district.

It was delayed by several hours, local media reported. Images broadcast on television showed people fainting in the packed crowds.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin told reporters in Karur that the death toll included at least 17 women, 13 men and nine children. A further 51 people were receiving treatment, he said.

Compensation of one million rupees ($11,300; £8,400) will be provided to the families of the deceased, Stalin added, and there will be an inquiry into the incident.

One man told Indian news agency ANI from outside a hospital that his brother’s two sons had been at the event.

“The elder one passed away, the younger one is missing. My relatives, my sister-in-law, is in the ICU. What should I do?” he said.

Vijay wrote in an online statement that his heart was “broken” and that he was in “unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow”.

He sent his “deepest sympathies and condolences” to the families of those who had died, and prayers for a “speedy recovery” to those in hospital.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the incident was “unfortunate” and “deeply saddening” in a post on X.

Kamaldeen Sulemana scores to help Atalanta draw at Juventus

Kamaldeen Sulemana flips as he celebrates his goal

Ghana forward Kamaldeen Sulemana scored his second goal in a row in the Italian Serie A after helping Atalanta to a 1-1 draw in Turin against Juventus.

Atalanta head coach Ivan Jurić has heaped praise on Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana following a standout performance in the team’s 1-1 draw against Juventus in Turin.

The former Southampton player not only scored a crucial goal but also delivered a complete performance, showcasing both attacking flair and defensive discipline.

Sulemana, who has been steadily growing into his role in Serie A, was instrumental in Atalanta’s result against one of Italy’s toughest opponents.

While his goal rightly drew attention, it was his off-the-ball work that truly impressed Jurić.

“I found him practically out of the squad at Southampton, but I knew he had enormous potential,” the Atalanta coach said after the match. “He has speed, technique, shooting, and tactical acumen. He needs to improve his finishing and final-yard decisions, but he’s also a great defensive player. He’s reliable in every situation, and I’m sure he’ll become increasingly decisive.”

Known for his pace and creativity, Sulemana has long been recognised as an exciting attacking prospect.

But under Jurić, he appears to be evolving into a more complete player, one who understands the tactical demands of Italian football and contributes across all phases of play.

His goal against Juventus follows a strong showing in Atalanta’s last league outing, where he recorded both a goal and an assist against Torino.

Atletico Madrid triumph against city rivals Real Madrid

0
Real Madrid lose Madrid derby

Atletico Madrid scored five goals against city rivals Real for the first time in nearly 75 years when they fought back from behind in a pulsating derby.

It was only the fourth time Atletico had scored at least five in a Madrid derby, the last occasion being a 6-3 victory in November 1950.

Real lost for the first time this season, having won all six of their opening La Liga matches as well as their first Champions League tie, a 2-1 victory over Marseille.

The last time Real conceded as many in La Liga was a 5-1 defeat by Barcelona in October 2018.

Robin le Normand’s header had given Diego Simeone’s side an early lead that was overturned by superb goals from Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler.

But Alexander Sorloth levelled the game at 2-2 in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

And the hosts took charge after the break when Julian Alvarez, who had hit the post in the first half, converted from the penalty spot before curling home a brilliant free-kick.

Atletico went into their shell, but held their cross-city rivals at bay until Antoine Griezmann grabbed their fifth goal deep into stoppage time.

The result maintained an impressive record against Real in La Liga for Simeone’s side, who have not lost in their past six league encounters with Los Blancos.
