Maddison to miss majority of season with torn ACL

James Maddison

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and is expected to miss the majority of the forthcoming season.

Sources have told BBC Sport that Maddison is set to have surgery and will become a long-term absentee as he starts his recovery programme.

The 28-year-old suffered the injury in the pre-season draw against Newcastle in South Korea last weekend.

Manager Thomas Frank confirmed after the match that Maddison had injured the same knee that ruled him out of the Europa League final victory against Manchester United in May.

Since returning from Asia on Monday, Maddison has undergone tests in recent days to ascertain the severity of the injury.

Initial fears were that Maddison had suffered a cruciate ligament injury and those concerns have now been realised.

Maddison, a 2023 signing from Leicester City, scored 12 goals in 45 appearances for Spurs last season.

He has seven England caps, the most recent of which came in 2024.

Al-Hilal agree £46m deal for Liverpool’s Nunez

Darwin Nunez

Al-Hilal have reached an agreement to sign Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez for 53m euros (£46.3m)

Nunez is now expected to undergo a medical ahead of his move to the Saudi Pro League.

The 26-year-old Uruguay international joined the Reds in June 2022 from Portuguese side Benfica for an initial fee of £64m.

Nunez has scored 40 goals in 143 appearances but only started eight Premier League games during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign last season.

Selling Nunez would financially boost the Reds’ chances of signing Newcastle striker Alexander Isak in this transfer window.

The Magpies turned down an opening offer of £110m from Liverpool last week as they value the 25-year-old Sweden international at around £150m.

Liverpool’s busy summer of signings include Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record £116m plus French forward Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth £79m, pushing their spending past £250m.

The Reds have also sold Colombia winger Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5m and midfielder Tyler Morton to Lyon for £15m, while England Under-21 midfielder Harvey Elliott could also leave the club.

Nunez has also been a target for Italian champions Napoli this summer while other European sides have shown an interest.

In January, Liverpool reportedly rejected a bid worth 70m euros (£61m) from Saudi’s Al-Nassr.

Nunez managed just seven goals across all competitions last season, however, he has scored five goals during the club’s four pre-season games, including a hat-trick inside 20 minutes against Stoke in July.

Al-Hilal, who are coached by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, finished second in the Saudi Pro League last season.

The Saudi side features former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, ex-Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo and former Fulham and Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, as well as Senegal centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly and Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

US-India relations at their ‘worst’ as Trump slaps 50 percent tariff

0
Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Even as the United States slaps India with a 50 percent tariff, the highest among all countries so far and one that will push their relationship to its lowest moment in years, one thing is clear: US President Donald Trump is more interested in onshoring than friend-shoring, experts say.

On Wednesday, the US announced an additional 25 percent tariff on India over its import of Russian oil, taking the total to 50 percent. The move caught most experts by surprise as New Delhi was one of the first to start trade negotiations with Washington, DC, and Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have repeatedly admired each other in public statements and called each other friends. Brazil is the only other country facing tariffs as high as India’s.

“The breakdown of the trade negotiations was a surprise,” said Vina Nadjibulla, vice president of strategy and research at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.

“This is a very difficult moment, arguably the worst in many, many years in their relationship and puts India in a very small group of countries that find themselves without a deal and with the highest tariff rates. They now need some pragmatic path forward and need to find a way to rebuild trust,” Nadjibulla said.

While the 50 percent tariffs, set to kick in in three weeks, have come as a shock, there has been a series of events in the past few weeks that hinted at disagreements between the two countries.

Just last week, Trump threatened that he would penalise New Delhi for buying Russian oil and arms, venting his frustration over an impasse in trade talks and referred to both countries as “dead economies”.

‘Fake nurse’ arrested in Florida after seeing more than 4,000 patients

Fake nurse arrested

A woman has been arrested in the US on suspicion of posing as a registered nurse.

A police investigation was launched after hospital bosses terminated Autumn Bardisa’s contract due to concerns about her qualifications.

Investigators found the 29-year-old had provided medical services to 4,486 patients between June 2024 and January 2025.

“This is one of the most disturbing cases of medical fraud we’ve ever investigated,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said.

Bardisa was employed by AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway in Palm Coast from July 2023 to January 2025.

She is accused of submitting false documentation and providing a licence number belonging to a nurse with the same first name who was employed by AdventHealth at a different hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office said she had explained the discrepancy by claiming she had recently got married and had changed her surname. She was asked to provide her marriage licence but never did.

In January, Bardisa was offered a promotion. A colleague reported her to authorities when they realised her nursing assistant licence had expired.

Her contract was then terminated and a seven-month criminal investigation was launched.

Detectives carried out an arrest warrant for her for seven counts of practicing a health care profession without a licence and seven counts of fraudulent use of personal identification information.

She was arrested, wearing scrubs, at her home on 5 August.

The Sheriff’s office has set up a dedicated email address, fakenursecase@flaglersheriff.com, for people who believe they have been treated by the 29-year-old.

Bardisa has been remanded in custody at Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where she is being held on a $70,000 (around £52,000) bond.

UK Government asks China to explain blanked-out embassy plans

0
Angela Rayner, UK secretary of state for Housing, Communities and Local Government

Angela Rayner has given China two weeks to explain why parts of its plans for a new mega-embassy in London have been blanked out.

The deputy prime minister’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government sent a letter asking for further information and requested a response by 20 August, the BBC understands.

Beijing’s plans for the new embassy have sparked fears its location – Royal Mint Court near London’s financial district – could pose an espionage risk. Residents nearby also fear it would pose a security risk to them and attract large protests.

The BBC has contacted the Chinese embassy in London for comment.

China bought the old Royal Mint Court for £255m in 2018. At 20,000 square metres, the complex will be the biggest embassy in Europe if it goes ahead.

The plan involves a cultural centre and housing for 200 staff, but in the basement, behind security doors, there are also rooms with no identified use on the plans.

There are concerns, held by some opponents, that the Royal Mint Court site could allow China to infiltrate the UK’s financial system by tapping into fibre optic cables carrying sensitive data for firms in the City of London.

Pro-democracy campaigners from Hong Kong also fear Beijing could use the huge embassy to harass political opponents and even detain them. Last month, the UK condemned cash offers from Hong Kong authorities for people who help in the arrest of pro-democracy activists living in Britain.

Trump and Putin to meet in coming days, Kremlin says

0
Trump and Putin

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to meet in the “coming days”, the Kremlin has said.

It follows Trump saying there was a “good chance” he could meet his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts together in person “very soon” to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated support for that idea, while Putin said he was not against meeting Zelensky but he was “very far” from it happening.

Trump’s deadline for Russia to agree a ceasefire in Ukraine or face more sweeping sanctions is due to expire on Friday.

A meeting between Trump and Putin would follow US envoy Steve Witkoff holding talks with the Russian president on Wednesday.

Witkoff has travelled to Moscow four times previously, visits followed by optimism from Trump but ultimately no major breakthrough in peace talks.

Speaking on Thursday, Putin said the United Arab Emirates could host his meeting with Trump, potentially as early as next week.

He said he was “very far” from a meeting with Zelensky because “conditions” had not been met and there was “still a long haul ahead for creation of such conditions”.

Previously, Putin said he would only meet Zelensky during a final phase of negotiations. Kyiv and its Western partners reject Moscow’s demands for ending the war.

Zelensky indicated his support for a summit, acknowledging that various formats of meetings had been discussed – “two bilateral and one trilateral” – and added that Europe “must be a participant” in any talks.

Justice Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie

The Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has, on behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service, extended heartfelt condolences following the devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, including two Ministers of State and three personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces.

In an official media statement released by the Office of the Acting Chief Justice, the Judiciary expressed profound sorrow over the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, as the victims were en route to perform national duties in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

“The Judiciary and the Judicial Service of Ghana stand with the President, the Government, and every grieving family, as the nation comes to terms with this immense loss,” the statement read.

Among the deceased were highly respected public servants and patriotic soldiers, whose lives were tragically cut short in the line of duty. The Acting Chief Justice described the event as a “heart-breaking tragedy” that has cast a shadow of mourning over the entire nation.

Drama In Ada: DCEs Beg Chiefs In Public …During Asafotufiame

Ada East, DCE Kenneth Kabu Kofi Kanor (L) and Ada West, DCE Jerry John Mills Nkrumah (r) on their knees praying for 'forgiveness of sins' from the elders

The Chiefs and people of Ada Traditional Area, in the Greater Accra Region, over the weekend celebrated the 88th annual Asafotufiame festival, with a grand durbar at the Big Ada Presbyterian School Park.

The festival, a significant cultural event, brought together the people of Ada East, Ada West Districts and Constituencies. However, the celebration was not without controversy.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada West Constituency, David Bessey, expressed his disappointment at the grand durbar, accusing the planners of deliberately omitting his name from the program.

The MP publicly enquired from the traditional authorities if the omission was a grand scheme to marginalise the people that he represents, due to some disagreements with the Ada Traditional Council over issues concerning the people. He, therefore, asked the authorities to respond to the worrying situation.

In a surprise turn of events, the Chief Executives of Ada East, Kenneth Kabu Kofi Kanor and Ada West, Jerry John Mills Nkrumah, took to the stage and knelt before the gathering and apologised to the traditional authorities, for what they termed to be a conduct unacceptable from the law maker.

The drama drew murmuring among the crowd and sparked interest in the dynamics between tradition and elected officials in a traditional area.

However, an opinion leader and Special Aide to the MP, Mr Daniel Busumprah, reacting to the development, expressed worry over the humiliation to the parliamentarian by the Asafotufiame festival planners.

According to the Aide, the plan not to include MP David Bessey in the ceremony came to their attention earlier, but they discarded it as just rumour because the MP represents the interest of the people of Ada.

He went on that, this move transcends the personality of the MP and the good people of his constituency. He, therefore, deserves equal attention as far as homage and traditions are concerned.

Mr Busumprah wanted to know from the traditional leaders, if for their action, Ada West and for that matter, Sege, is no longer part of Ada traditional area.

He ended by cautioning whoever is leading the charge to marginalize Sege from Great Ada to bear in mind that this will not solve the problem, but rather a beginning of very sensitive orchestration in Ada.

The District Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Ghana, a branch of Freemasons under the United Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of England and Wales and its Districts and Lodges Overseas, has extended a generous hand of support to the Osu Government Maternity Home.

In a ceremony held at the facility, the fraternity donated two brand new air conditioners and fully renovated the administrative office block of the maternity home — a gesture aimed at improving working conditions for staff and enhancing service delivery for patients.

Leading the delegation was Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, Deputy District Grand Master and immediate past Minister for Transport, who took the opportunity to clarify longstanding misconceptions surrounding Freemasonry in Ghana.

He debunked the notion that the fraternity is an occultic group involved in dehumanising practices.

“Freemasonry is a noble brotherhood rooted in charity, service, and the pursuit of moral and social upliftment,” the Deputy District Grand Master stated.

“We are not a secret society with hidden agendas. Rather, we are a socially relatable organization committed to protecting the interest of society and making life better for the vulnerable.”

He encouraged the public to discard the negative narratives often associated with the group and embrace the fraternity as a community of men united in service and compassion.

“Where society shows weakness, we strive to provide strength,” he added, promising continued support to the Osu Government Maternity Home and other critical healthcare institutions.

Facility Manager, Madam Alice Ofoli, expressed profound gratitude to the Masons for their timely intervention.

“This donation and renovation will go a long way to improve both staff morale and patient comfort. We are grateful and will ensure that the items are put to good use,” she assured.

Also present at the donation event were Frank Davies, The District Grand Director of Ceremonies and Kojo Taylor-Appiah, The District Grand Secretary all members of the District Grand Lodge.
