London police arrest 466 people for backing banned Palestine Action group

Police arrest protesters supporting the pro-Palestinian group

Police have arrested 466 people in central London on Saturday for protesting the British government’s decision to ban the pro-Palestinian activist group Palestine Action under anti-terrorism laws.

“As of 9pm, 466 people had been arrested for showing support for Palestine Action,” the Metropolitan Police wrote on X on Saturday.

Eight arrests were made for other offences, including five for assaults on officers, but police said none were seriously injured.

Palestine Action is a UK-based group which says it aims to disrupt the operations of weapons manufacturers supplying the Israeli government.

Last month, UK lawmakers voted to proscribe the group after two Palestine Action activists broke into Britain’s largest air base in central England in June, damaging two military aircraft.

The group’s ban makes it illegal under UK law to be a member of – or invite support for – Palestine Action and puts them on par with terrorist organizations such as Hamas, al Qaeda and ISIS.

Large crowds turned up for demonstrations organized by Defend Our Juries on Saturday afternoon at London’s Parliament Square. London’s Metropolitan Police had cautioned that it would arrest anyone showing support for the proscribed group.

Ukraine’s European allies say peace talks must include Kyiv

0
Macron, Zelensky and Starmer spoke on the phone on Saturday

European allies have rallied behind Ukraine in a renewed surge of support, insisting that any peace talks with Russia must include Kyiv.

A joint statement issued by the leaders of the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland and the European Commission came ahead of US President Donald Trump’s meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.

A White House official has said that Trump is willing to hold a trilateral meeting which would also include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but, for now, it remains a Trump-Putin summit, as initially requested by the Russian leader.

Zelensky has said any agreements without Kyiv will amount to “dead decisions”.

Trump has previously suggested that he could start by meeting only with Putin, telling reporters he planned to “start off with Russia.” But the US president also said that he believed “we have a shot at” organising a trilateral meeting with both Putin and Zelensky.

Whether Putin would agree to this is unclear – he has refused several opportunities to hold direct talks, and the two leaders have not met face-to-face since Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago.

Speaking on Friday, Trump also suggested that there “will be some swapping of territories” in order for Moscow and Kyiv to reach an agreement – to which Zelensky reacted strongly.

“We will not reward Russia for what it has perpetrated,” he said on Telegram. “Any decisions against us, any decisions without Ukraine, are also decisions against peace.”

CBS, the BBC’s US media partner, has reported that the White House is trying to sway European allies to accept an agreement that would include Russia taking the entire Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, and keeping the Crimean Peninsula.

The European leaders, in their statement released late on Saturday night, stressed that “international borders must not be changed by force”.

North Korea dismantles propaganda speakers at border

0
South Korea began taking down some of its own speakers this week

South Korea’s military says North Korea has begun removing some of the loudspeakers used to broadcast propaganda across the border between the two countries.

North Korea’s move appears to be a positive reaction to the overtures from newly elected South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who had campaigned on improving inter-Korean ties.

South Korea dismantled some of its own loudspeakers earlier this week. It had halted broadcasts along the demilitarised zone shortly after Lee took office in June – prompting a similar response from its neighbour.

South Korean broadcasts had often featured K-pop songs and news reports while the North played unsettling noises, such as howling animals.

In a statement on Saturday, South Korea’s military said it had “detected North Korean troops dismantling propaganda loudspeakers in some parts along the front line from this morning”.

It added: “It remains to be confirmed whether the devices have been removed across all regions, and the military will continue to monitor related activities.”

The speaker broadcasts had been suspended on previous occasions. But after a six-year pause, they resumed in June 2024 in response to Pyongyang’s campaign of sending rubbish-filled balloons to the South.

Residents living along the border had complained that their lives have been blighted by noise coming from both sides, sometimes in the middle of the night.

Seoul claimed the broadcasts could be heard as much as 10km (six miles) across the border in the day and up to 24km (15 miles) at night.

But speaking after South Korea suspended its broadcasts in June, organisations advocating to improve the human rights of North Koreans criticised the move.

Netanyahu defends Israel’s plan to take over Gaza City

Bezalel Smotrich (left) speaks to Netanyahu in the Israeli parliament

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defends his government’s plan to take over Gaza City, claiming it is the “best way” to end the war and that operations will move “fairly quickly”

The UK, France and other European countries warn Israel’s plan “risks violating international humanitarian law”, as a UN emergency meeting on Gaza is took place yesterday in New York.

Protests against the government’s decision to expand the Gaza war have intensified in Israel as hostages’ families have condemned the move.

Israel strongly rejects the condemnation with Defence Minister Israel Katz saying it “will not weaken our resolve”.In Gaza, the Hamas-run health ministry reports the total death toll from malnutrition has risen to 217, including 100 children

The Israeli government does not allow international news organisations, including the BBC, into Gaza to report freely.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed media yesterday, in a news conference he said was aimed at “puncturing lies” about the war in Gaza.

Referring to the military plan approved by Israel’s security cabinet on Friday, the PM says Israel wants to “free Gaza”, not to occupy it – and called the plan the “best way” to end the war

Netanyahu outlined a three-step plan to increase aid into Gaza – including designating safe corridors for humanitarian aid distribution

Asked for a timeline on when he wants to conclude the expansion of the new offensive, he said operations will move “fairly quickly” and safe zones will be established first

Responding to a question on US President Trump’s comments about starvation in Gaza, Netanyahu said he appreciates the president’s support – adding Trump has said the hostages should be released and Hamas should not be in Gaza.

Why Your Feet Hurt

0
Shoes

Your Shoes

High heels, for example, put more pressure on the balls of your feet, which can thin your foot’s natural padding where you need it most. Avoid heels higher than 2 1/4 inches when you’re going to do a lot of walking. Flip-flops and overly pointed or flexible shoes also could lead to foot pain. You can avoid this if you match the shoe to the activity and make sure of proper fit and support.

Arthritis

Many types of arthritis affect your feet. Osteoarthritis, the most common, happens when cartilage breaks down and allows bone to rub against bone. Gout causes uric acid crystals to build up in your big toe and leads to pain and swelling. In rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other autoimmune disorders, your body’s immune system attacks the joints in your feet and ankles, causing inflammation.

Sprains and Strains

Sprains pull, twist, or tear the ligaments that connect your bones to each other, often when you fall or get hit. Strains are the same type of damage to the tendons that connect muscles to bone. Aside from the most common spot, the ankle, you can also get them in the middle of your foot, around the arch, or at the base of your big toe. The area may become swollen and bruised, and it’ll probably be hard to walk. Treat it with RICE — rest, ice, compression, elevation — for the first 2 days. Talk to your doctor if it still hurts after 2 weeks.

Broken Bone

Your foot is made up of many small bones. It’s easy to break one of them when you fall, in an accident, or while you’re playing sports. Your foot will likely hurt and get swollen and bruised. The shape around the break, whether toe or instep, may not look right. The doctor will try to get your bone straight again and keep it still with a cast so it can heal. A severe break might require surgery.

Achilles Problems

The Achilles is a thick tendon that connects your calf muscles to your heel. Repeated motion can inflame it (your doctor will call it tendinitis). A jump or fall, often during sports, can tear or rupture it. You might hear a sudden pop and feel a sharp pain in the back of your lower leg. Your heel could swell, and it may hurt to stand on your toes. Rest and icing are important for both. You doctor might suggest surgery in serious cases.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Your tibial nerve goes through this tunnel between your ankle bone and a group of ligaments near the top of your foot. The nerve helps you feel on the bottom of the foot. Swelling from injury, arthritis, bone spurs, fallen arches, or other conditions could push on the nerve. You might have shooting pain, numbness, and a tingling or burning feeling in your foot.

Raynaud’s Phenomenon

This condition causes blood vessels in your hands or feet overreact to cold or stress. During an attack, they narrow and limit blood supply. This can make your toes cold and numb. They could even turn white or blue. As blood returns, they may start to tingle and hurt. Medication can help symptoms and prevent tissue damage.

Stress Fracture

Pounding your feet over and over, as in running, basketball, tennis, and other sports, can cause tiny cracks in your metatarsals — the long bones just below your toes. Once this happens, you’ll notice swelling and pain with any type of activity that caused the injury. Rest for 6-8 weeks to give it a chance to heal. If you don’t, you might create more serious damage that’s harder to treat.

Salah calls out Uefa over wording of tribute to ‘Palestinian Pele’

Mohamed Salah

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has called out Uefa over a tribute to Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid it posted on social media which failed to refer to the circumstances surrounding his death.

On Thursday, the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said Obeid was killed in an Israeli attack while waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip the previous day.

The 41-year-old, who was known as the “Pele of Palestinian football” according to the PFA, scored more than 100 goals during his career, including two in 24 international matches.

In a post on X on Friday, Uefa said: “Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the ‘Palestinian Pele’.

“A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.”

On Saturday, Egypt international Salah, 33, responded with, external: “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?”

BBC Sport has contacted Uefa for comment.

Israel began its military offensive in Gaza after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

Since then, more than 61,300 people have been killed in Gaza as a result of Israeli military operations.

At least 38 people have also been killed and 491 injured as a result of Israeli military activity over the past 24 hours, the Hamas-run health ministry said on Saturday.

The UN reported earlier this month that 1,373 Palestinians have been killed seeking food since late May, when a new US and Israeli-backed organisation Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) set up aid distribution sites.

Salah has previously advocated for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza and called for “world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of innocent souls” amid the conflict.

Crystal Palace beat Liverpool on penalties to win Community Shield

Crystal Palace celebrate winning the Community Shield for the first time

Crystal Palace started the new season with a suddenly familiar feeling, basking in trophy glory as triumphant underdogs at Wembley.

The FA Cup holders beat Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw to win an enthralling Community Shield on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson was the shootout hero for Palace as he saved from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah sent his kick over the bar.

It allowed 21-year-old midfielder Justin Devenny, sent on as a stoppage-time substitute, to smash the winning penalty past Alisson.

Palace, who had not won a major trophy in their history until this year, have now earned two in three months at Wembley, having snatched the first at Manchester City’s expense.

They are also the first side to win the Community Shield on their debut in the match for 50 years, since Derby County in 1975.

Spot-kicks provided a thrilling conclusion to one of the most exciting season openers in years, in which the drama started in just the fourth minute.

Four of Liverpool’s five major summer signings started, and two of those players combined to brilliant effect in the early moments at sun-drenched Wembley.

Florian Wirtz, Liverpool’s £116m record signing, fed Hugo Ekitike on the edge of the box and the French striker turned and struck a low right-foot shot into the far bottom right corner, beyond the diving Henderson.

Palace were undaunted and deservedly equalised 13 minutes later when Jean-Philippe Mateta slotted in from the spot after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr. Mateta would also score in the shootout later.

But soon after, yet another Liverpool newcomer stepped up as right-back Jeremie Frimpong jinked into the Palace box and chipped what looked like a cross over Henderson, the ball hitting the far post and bouncing in.

Moments earlier, Liverpool’s supporters had been paying a 20th-minute tribute to Diogo Jota, the forward who wore the number 20 shirt for the club before his tragic death in a car crash last month.

Ekitike should have extended the Reds’ advantage in the opening minute of the second half but guided a header wide from inside the six-yard box. The new signing from Eintracht Frankfurt also blazed over from 12 yards.

Liverpool were made to pay when Ismaila Sarr was played onside by Frimpong and finished clinically in off the post.

Palace felt they should then have had a penalty when Mac Allister appeared to handle a cross, but the on-field decision was upheld by the video assistant referee, before Devenny was inches away from scoring the winner in the final seconds.
