Tonto-Dikeh

Actress Tonto Dikeh is taking a step back from the entertainment industry to focus on other areas of her life.

According to her, she has not actively pursued acting as a career in the past few years nor does she see herself going back to it anytime soon.

In an Instagram live Tonto Dikeh stated that “before now, I really would not say I did a lot in that scene. It is not something that I’ve been frequent in the past few years so, I know that an artiste will always be an artiste but I just don’t see myself as an actress anymore.”

This comes after the actress was chosen as the running mate to Tonte Ibraye, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Rivers State, for the 2023 election.

When the announcement was made in June, Tonto Dikeh wrote “we are looking forward to investing massively in social protection, creating a social value system for young people, increasing women’s inclusion in our governance system, supporting small businesses and strengthening our traditional institutions to be active players in the drive to bring sustainable development to the good people of Rivers State.”

Meanwhile, the single mother believes that life is about evolving and at some point people would like different things for themselves.

She added that actively participating in the movie industry would affect her role as a mother to her son.

“You just evolve, you want different things for yourself, just like I did I think two movies in the past year, one last year and one this year. I mean not to say I can’t do things like that but to be active in the industry like I used to is not a possibility. It won’t let me be a mum and I can’t jeopardize and I can’t compromise that for anything in the world.” she said.

Jackie Appiah has ‘invited a huge problem’ for herself ; Bulldog

Bulldog

Former manager of Shatta Wale, Bulldog, says actress Jackie Appiah has created a big problem for herself because of her decision to allow the public to know how wealthy she is.

According to the artiste manager, the actress’ decision will cause the Ghana Revenue Authority(GRA) to start asking questions about her tax returns.

Bulldog said this while speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz Saturday, 2 July. He said this because, to him, dealing with the tax authorities is not always pleasant.

“I am praying and hoping this professional version is for a commercial reason, because what she has done is unwise. What Jackie has done is not wise. The GRA, they don’t play and that is the culture, that is why people don’t disclose their wealth.

“The GRA doesn’t play in Ghana. If the law hasn’t caught up with you, you’ll think there are no laws. She has {created} a huge problem for herself.”

Bulldog, who is officially known as Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, further pointed out that if the GRA reaches out to the actress, as he expects, “she should find a better reason,” for the authority.

His comments come after the luxurious furnishings in Jackie Appiah’s home was shared on social media by Nigerian actress Luchy Donald. The Nigerian actress and producer was touring Jackie’s house, which is located in Trassaco Valley, located in the prestigious residential area of East Legon.

Jackie’s plush abode has since been a topic on social media as a lot of Ghanaians were overwhelmed and blown away by how well the house was furnished. The house has a smart toilet in it.

Pope Francis denies he is planning to resign soon

Pope Francis

Pope Francis has dismissed reports that he plans to resign in the near future, saying he is on track to visit Canada this month and hopes to be able to go to Moscow and Kyiv as soon as possible after that.

In an exclusive interview with Reuters in his Vatican residence, Francis also denied rumors that he had cancer, joking that his doctors “didn’t tell me anything about it,” and for the first time gave details of the knee condition that has prevented him carrying out some duties.

In a 90-minute conversation on Saturday afternoon, conducted in Italian, with no aides present, the 85-year-old pontiff also repeated his condemnation of abortion following the US Supreme Court ruling last month.

Rumors have swirled in the media that a conjunction of events in late August, including meetings with the world’s cardinals to discuss a new Vatican constitution, a ceremony to induct new cardinals, and a visit to the Italian city of L’Aquila, could foreshadow a resignation announcement.

L’Aquila is associated with Pope Celestine V, who resigned the papacy in 1294. Pope Benedict XVI visited the city four years before he resigned in 2013, the first pope to do so in about 600 years.

Ukrainian flag raised over Snake Island after Russian retreat

An image released by the Ukrainian military that it says shows the Ukrainian flag raised on Snake Island.

Ukrainian forces have raised the country’s flag on Snake Island, a strategic and symbolic outpost in the Black Sea that Russian troops retreated from last week after months of heavy bombardment.

“The military operation has been concluded, and … the territory, Snake Island, has been returned to the jurisdiction of Ukraine,” Natalia Humeniuk, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s southern military command, told reporters.

Ukraine has considered control of the island as a critical step in loosening Moscow’s blockade on its southern ports.

However, it was not clear if Ukrainian troops would seek to re-establish a permanent presence there, as it is dangerously exposed to bombardment.

On Sunday, a military official told the Guardian the area of the Black Sea around Snake Island was still a “grey zone”, meaning that, technically, the Ukrainians did not intend to bring their forces back.

Snake Island became known internationally when Russia first captured it in February.

Uzbekistan’s president said there have been casualties among civilians and law enforcement personnel after rare public protests in the country’s autonomous northwestern Karakalpakstan province, which has seen significant unrest over a planned constitutional reform.

In a statement posted online on Sunday, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said rioters had carried out “destructive actions” in the city of Nukus, throwing stones, starting fires and attacking police.

“Unfortunately, there are fatalities among civilians and law enforcement officers,” Mirziyoyev said during a speech in Karakalpakstan that was relayed by his press service on Telegram. He did not specify the number and nature of the casualties.

Sultanbek Ziyayev, the head of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, told news website Daryo.uz that hospitals in Nukus were full of patients who had been wounded when protesters clashed with security forces.

An exiled opposition politician, Pulat Ahunov, told Reuters news agency that, based on contacts with local sources and video evidence, at least five people had been killed. He said there were unconfirmed reports of dozens more dead

Demolition deadline about to pass for Cairo’s historic houseboats

Movers take away the belongings of houseboat owners who are getting ready to leave behind the only place they have called home

In their more glamorous days, they played host to some of the city’s most important political and cultural chapters. But that is coming to an end, as authorities move to demolish or tow away what remains of these relics, and residents scurry to pack their belongings.

The owners have been told that Monday is the last day they will be able to take their belongings, before the authorities move in. Some still refuse to leave the only places they have called home, while others have already seen their houseboats destroyed or taken away.

Ebtessam Amin Afifi, 78, is one of them; her home was towed away late last month. She is now staying temporarily at her sister’s house, but has not given up.

In recent years, Cairo’s neighbourhoods have witnessed sweeping makeovers as the government embarks on infrastructure and development projects. Countless bridges, highways, museums and even a new capital city have been constructed, affecting citizens along the way, and uprooting distinct features of one of the oldest cities of Africa and the Middle East.

Macron reshuffles cabinet after losing parliamentary majority

Emmanuel Dunand

French President Emmanuel Macron has reshuffled his government after his centrist ruling alliance failed to win a parliamentary majority last month.

The president on Monday made several key changes to high-profile positions and finally ceded to public pressure by removing Damien Abad, the solidarity and social cohesion minister, who is currently facing a rape investigation

French Red Cross director Jean-Christophe Combe was nominated to replace Abad, who has firmly denied accusations linked to sexual misconduct made by several women against him through the press.

In a surprise move, chief economist of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Laurence Boone was named the new Europe minister in place of Clement Beaune, who had played a key role in negotiations with the United Kingdom over Brexit.

In another key change, Christophe Bechu, mayor of the Loire city of Angers and a key ally of former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, was named environment minister in lieu of Macron loyalist Amelie de Montchalin.

Marmolada glacier collapse in Italy kills seven

At least seven people have been killed after being caught in an avalanche sparked by the collapse of a glacier in the northern Italian Alps. Emergency officials said eight others were injured in the collapse, with two people suffering serious injuries.

Rescue teams using helicopters and drones have resumed searching for 15 still missing.

Four of the seven killed have been identified by rescuers, three of them Italian, including two mountain guides. Video of the incident showed an ice mass collapsing down the slopes of Marmolada, the area’s highest mountain.

“An avalanche of snow, ice and rock which in its path hit the access road when there were several roped parties, some of which were swept away,” emergency services spokeswoman Michela Canova said. The injured hikers, including two people left in critical condition, were taken to a number of hospitals around the area, rescue officials said.

It isn’t immediately clear what caused the section of the glacier, called a serac, to collapse.

But Walter Milan, a rescue service spokesperson, told state TV the area has been experiencing unusually high temperatures in recent days.
