Rafael Leao is the first Portuguese player to score a goal in a Milan derby

Rafael Leao scored twice as champions AC Milan came from a goal down to beat Inter Milan in a thrilling derby.

Leao opened his account by levelling from Sandro Tonali’s pass after Croatia midfielder Marcelo Brozovic had opened the scoring for Inter.

The Portugal forward crossed for Olivier Giroud to score, before beating two defenders to add Milan’s third.

Edin Dzeko brought Inter back into the game but Stefano Pioli’s side held on to move top of Serie A.

Milan now sit one point clear of Atalanta who travel to Monza on Monday (17:30 BST), and third-placed Roma who visit Udinese on Sunday (19:45)

Inter, who were without the injured Romelu Lukaku, sit sixth in the table, level on nine points with Juventus after their second defeat in the opening five matches.

The breathless encounter at the San Siro saw 37 shots on goal, with Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan performing superbly to prevent Inter taking a point.

Man City fail to go top as Villa earn draw

Haaland has scored 10 goals in his first six Premier League appearances for Manchester City

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard hopes his side can use their draw against champions Manchester City as a foundation to kickstart their season.

City missed a chance to go top of the Premier League as Leon Bailey’s equaliser earned Aston Villa an excellent draw at Villa Park, while the point took Villa out of the bottom three.

The league’s top goalscorer Erling Haaland got his 10th goal in six games when he was in the right place at the back post to volley in Kevin de Bruyne’s superb cross.

After scoring in the 50th minute, Haaland had another two efforts saved by Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez and De Bruyne also hit the crossbar with a 22-yard free-kick.

Those missed chances proved costly as Bailey struck a sweet first-time shot into the top corner from Jacob Ramsey’s square pass to make it 1-1 in the 74th minute.

Villa thought they had scored a winner when Philippe Coutinho put the ball in the net off the underside of the bar. However, the assistant referee had already put his flag up for offside.

Bayern miss chance to move to top after draw with Berlin

Joshua Kimmich's crisp finish earned Bayern a point at Union Berlin

Bayern Munich missed the chance to return to the top of the Bundesliga after being held to a draw by Union Berlin.

Sheraldo Becker gave the home side a shock lead when he volleyed Christopher Tremmel’s free-kick into the far corner.

But Joshua Kimmich equalised three minutes later with a crisp finish from the edge of the box.

The draw leaves Bayern in third place in the Bundesliga table.

Borussia Dortmund had claimed top spot on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Hoffenheim, before a 3-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen saw Freiburg move above Dortmund into first place on Saturday.

Frederik Ronnow denied Jamal Musiala with an excellent save in the first half, but only a strong one-handed stop from Manuel Neuer prevented Bayern from falling behind again in the closing stages.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side open their Champions League campaign with a trip to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

Goals from Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo earned Real Madrid a narrow win at home

Real Madrid continued their perfect start to the new La Liga season by inflicting a first league defeat of the campaign on Real Betis.

Vinicius Jr’s sublime early finish was cancelled out 11 minutes later by Betis midfielder Sergio Canales.

Karim Benzema had an effort cleared off the line before Rodrygo prodded Madrid back in front in the second half.

The 21-year-old almost made it 3-1 soon afterwards but struck the post from Luka Modric’s cross.

Betis, who had collected maximum points from their opening three league games, were denied another equaliser when Thibaut Courtois tipped Canales’ dipping effort around the post with 15 minutes remaining.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have now won four games out of four as they seek to defend their La Liga title, and will begin the defence of their Champions League crown with a trip to Celtic on Tuesday.

Barcelona maintain unbeaten start wit win at Sevilla

Robert Lewandowski scored his fifth goal of the season for Barcelona

Barcelona moved up to second in La Liga after maintaining their unbeaten start to the season with victory at Sevilla.

Raphinha was in the right place to head home his first Barcelona goal following his £60m summer move from Leeds.

The visitors doubled their lead before half-time when Robert Lewandowski took the ball on his chest and volleyed in for his fifth goal of the campaign.

Former Manchester City defender Erik Garcia nodded in the third, as Julen Lopetegui’s Sevilla remain winless.

Sevilla’s wretched run against Barca continued, now winning just one of their last 31 league games against their opponents, a run which stretches back to the 2007-08 season.

The home supporters expressed their dissatisfaction at full-time with loud jeers as their side have just one point from their opening four league games.

Messi assists Mbappe twice in PSG win over Nantes

0
Mbappe has scored 13 goals in his past seven Ligue 1 away games

Kylian Mbappe was on target twice as PSG beat Nantes 3-0 on Saturday night to leapfrog Marseille and go top of Ligue 1.

Nuno Mendes was also on target for the visitors in the second half, as Nantes found themselves down to ten men after 24 minutes.

Samuel Moutoussamy’s strike from outside of the box missed by inches, before Fabio stabbed a close-range effort over minutes later.

That would be Fabio’s last involvement, as he was sent packing midway through the first half after he dived into a challenge on Vitinha with his studs up and leg off the floor.

Less than ten minutes into the second half, Mbappe doubled PSG’s lead with a simple close-range finish from the edge of the six-yard box.

PSG stretched their lead to three when Mendes pounced on a loose ball that had crashed off the post, courtesy of a poor Neymar effort from a few yards out.

The victory for PSG means they are now six games undefeated in Ligue 1, with five wins and a draw.

DCE Expresses Concern As Seized Galamsey Excavators Vanish From Police Custody

0
This is the site where the excavators were seized

Two excavators seized by the District Chief Executive for Ellembelle in the Western region have disappeared from the custody of the Ellembelle Police Command.

The excavators were seized on the orders of the DCE on Wednesday, this week, for engaging in illegal mining, also known as galamsey. The excavators were subsequently handed over to the Police, but could not be found since yesterday, when the DCE decided to check on the seized equipment.

Speaking to news men at the site where the equipment were seized, DCE Kwasi Bonzo expressed disgust over the development.

According to the DCE, when the excavators were seized and handed over to the police, he called the Police Command who was reluctant to guard the equipment, with the explanation that they did not have enough men.

However, the command later agreed to assign two officers to guard the seized equipment, but on condition that they would guard it to 6pm. By the next morning, the seized excavators had disappeared into thin air.

How the seized excavators disappeared from the custody of the police is unknown. This led to the DCE expressing his disgust over the development, saying it appears illegal mining has become an organised crime, with too many actors fighting those fighting the canker.

At the site where the excavators were seized, it became clear that the one behind the illegal mining had been at the site not long enough.

Other equipment discovered at the site was set ablaze by DCE Kwasi Bonzo, when he led journalists to the site.

BACKGROUND

This is not the first time seized excavators have gone missing in the country. It will be recalled that, The Chronicle, sometime in 2020 reported that seized galamsey excavators on its way to Accra had vanished.

Also, in the same year, news broke about the disappearance of some 500 excavators seized by the Operation Vanguard, an operational team made up of various security personnel to fight galamsey.

The then sector Minister, Mr John Peter Amewu, who sanctioned the seizure directed them to be parked at the premises of the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

Days after the police had effected the arrest of some six people in connection with the disappeared earth-moving machines, hundreds of them miraculously found their way to the collection centre.

Jinapor woos Australian investors into mining sector; says our stable democracy will safeguard their investments

Mr Samuel Jinapor addressing the forum in Australia

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has assured the international business community that any investment they will make in Ghana especially in the mining sector will be safe because country has stable democracy and good corporate governance.

According to the Minister, it was not for nothing that Ghana earned the enviable accolade, “the beacon of democracy in Africa.” He indicated that Ghana has for the past thirty years conducted successful elections and handed over power from one government to the other.

To him, the rule of law is the norm and not the exception, and it is the pivot around which governance architecture in Ghana revolves and that investors are guaranteed their rights, irrespective of the government in power.

“…Fortunately and significantly, in Ghana, the rule of law is the norm and not the exception.

It is the pivot around which our governance architecture revolves. With a stable democracy, spanning over thirty (30) years, peaceful elections and successful change of government from one political party to another, investors are assured of the protection of their rights, regardless of the outcome of national elections.

Our respect for the rule of law has earned us the enviable title of “the beacon of democracy in Africa”, Mr Jinapor pointed out.

The Minister was addressing delegates who gathered at the 20th edition of the African Down Under (ADU) conference in Perth, Western Australia yesterday.

ADU is a platform for engagement on matters pertaining to the mining industry and geared towards strengthening Australian – African relationship in the industry.

Giving more insight into how a stable democracy has enabled the country create a business-friendly environment, specifically the mining industry, the Minister said that one of the structures that has made the industry investor friendly is the law.

He listed some of these laws as the stability clauses that insulate investors from changes in laws and policies after the acquisition of their mineral rights and a law that has respect for the sanctity of contracts and accrued rights.

He also made mention of the law on capitalization of expenditure on reconnaissance and prospecting as well as the law that exempt one from the payment of import duties for plants and machinery imported for mineral operations.

Still on the law, Minister Jinapor said the government has an initiative where mining staff who reside in accommodations at mine sites are exempted from the payment of income tax on furnished accommodations and also a law on immigration quota in respect of approved number of expatriate personnel and personal remittance quota for expatriate personnel free from tax.

Aside the law, the Minister pointed out that the fiscal regime has also been softened to enable investors work.

“This  includes a twenty percent (20%) straight line capital allowances along with a five-year loss carry forward provision designed to support mining projects whilst optimising government’s share of revenues for the development of a vibrant industry”, the Minister said.

On structures, Mr Jinapor said that government has introduced Mineral Cadastral Administration System (MCAS) to improve mineral licensing administration.

He said this system, together with the online application for mineral rights, has improved access to information and transparency in administration and the easy way of doing of business in the mining industry in Ghana.

Mr Jinapor indicated to the delegates at the conference that aside wooing investors, the government is committed to translating the minerals it has in its possession into money for the good of the citizens and that’s why it has softened the grounds for investors and not only because it wants to woo them.

“The priority of the Government of Ghana, however, continues to be the translation of these volumes of minerals production into wealth to benefit all stakeholders, equitably, including the larger populace as optimally as possible.

Government is, therefore, mindful of the need to implement mining-friendly policies to sustain these achievements while ensuring environmental sustainability and protecting the interest of citizens and investors alike,” he told the conference.

Agyemang-Manu amazed @ ambulance transaction documents

0
Kwaku Agyemang Manu, Minister for Health

The Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, says he is mesmerised by documents challenging his claim on the 200 ambulances procured by the erstwhile Mahama government to boost the fleet of the Ghana Ambulance Service.

According to him, he was not privy to those contract documents between the Ministry of Health and Big Sea General Trading LLC that the Government of Ghana bears the financial responsibility to clear the medical accessories of the ambulances at the Tema Port.

Prior to the evidence, the Minister said he had thought otherwise, since the wording of the contractual agreement was that the Government of Ghana would facilitate.

He said this under cross-examination by Dr. Abdul Aziz Bamba, lead counsel for former deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and two others who are being tried for causing financial loss to the state in the purchase of some ambulances.

The Health Minister told the Financial Division of the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, that he was aware that Big Sea General Trading LLC had shipped the medical accessories of the ambulances into the country.

The Attorney General’s fourth witness admitted to the court that he was not aware of some of the ambulance transaction documents, hence, his amusement.

He also admitted that after the Letter of Credit (LC) was established on August 18, 2014, he never sighted any documents that indicated Dr. Ato Forson authorised payment to be made under the Letter of Credit.

The following are responses from the Minister:

Q. Mr. Health Minister, in the course of your testimony before this court, Exhibit A2 was tendered before this court. Is that correct?
A. That is correct.

Q. And in Exhibit A2 the then Minister indicated that some ambulances have been delivered. Is that correct?

A. That is what the Minister wrote here. My lord, if you permit me, I will like to read paragraph 3. The company so far delivered 30 of the ambulances. My lord, I would not want to believe that this constitutes delivery.

Q. Honourable Minister, you are aware, ain’t you, the ambulance contract, Exhibit B, has provisions on delivery? Please look at clause 6.

A. I have seen clause 6. The supplier shall deliver the goods to the purchaser.
Q. Hon. Minister, are you familiar with the CIF contract?
A. Not very familiar.

Q. I suggest to you that the CIF contract, as confirmed by Clause 6.2, delivery takes place at the course of the arrival of the goods?
A. Yes, but in this case, there were two points of arrival – one in Dubai and one in Accra.
Q. Contrary to the testimony you have just given, the delivery was at CIF Port Tema?

A. That is correct.
Q. Hon. Minster, you are aware that in Exhibit B the ambulance contract the Government of Ghana undertook to perform certain obligations?
A. Yes.

Q. And clause 2 of Exhibit B deals with the terms of payment, is that correct?
A. That is correct.
Q. And by Clause 4 of Exhibit B, the Government of Ghana was to establish LC within 120 days of the signing of the contract. Is that correct?

A. I don’t think that is correct. …speak about upon delivery. They should have paid upon delivery.
Q. Read Clause 4. 2. Bullet 1.

A. Payment should have been done upon delivery. Reading: “payment…upon the signing for every 50 ambulances.”
Q. When was Exhibit B signed?

A. The contract was signed on the December 19, 2014.
Q. To the best of your knowledge, did the Government of Ghana establish the manure stated in clause 4.2.bullet point 1?

A. In my mind, I will say no. In that same bullet, the LC on site of goods shall be established upon the signing of the contract for every 50 ambulances. My lady, the Exhibit B speaks about purchasing brand new 200 ambulances, and so my lady, the contract for every 50, that clause 2 was talking about was never done. And there the LC should not have been established at all.

Q. Will you agree with me that by the Government of Ghana is not complying with Clause 2…to the time frame for setting the LC the Government of Ghana breached Exhibit B?

A. I will like to agree.
Q. Exhibit…Clause 7 provided for shipment of what they have shipped to Ghana, is that correct?

A. Correct.
Q. To the best of your knowledge did the Government of Ghana conduct pre-shipment inspection before the ambulances were shipped to Ghana?

A. No.
Q. In your testimony to the court on June 28, 2022, you stated that my handing over note indicated lack of ambulances, so I become interested and I began searching through files and I interviewed the directors if anything could be done?

A. Correct
Q. The file you search are files relating to these ambulances, is that correct?
A. Correct
Q. Is it one file or series of files?

A. I must say a couple of files.

Q. And the documents that have been tendered through you in the course of this trial are not the full complement of the documents in the couple of files you examined in the ambulance transaction?

A. That is correct. I remember you showed me a document that I did not know of.

Q. Among the documents in the document file was a letter dated December 14, 2016 with the caption of supplying of 200 ambulances and related service, signed by the then Hon minister of health, Alex Segefia. Please have a look at this document and see whether you have sighted this document before?

A. My lady this is the first time I’m seeing it.

Osmanu Ibrahim alias OC

The Chief of Klagon, Nii Bortey Klan I, a.k.a. Samuel Nii Bortey Kofi, together with 10 others, are being held liable for the alleged murder of one Ibrahim Mohammed Abass over land issue.

Abass, who was once a close confidant and very instrumental person in Nii Bortey Klan I’s traditional administration, was allegedly killed by land guards on the instructions of the Chief on November 15, 2020 in Accra.

Nii Bortey Klan I,and his alleged group of land guards, namely Hamidu Fuseini alias Sankara, unemployed, Tahiru Mamudu aka Tsikata, unemployed, Haruna Yakubu, unemployed, Latif Moro Kwaku Anane aka Kobo, unemployed, Richard Annang Kotey, movie actor, Nii Odiko Laryea Famite aka George Laryea, traditional ruler, Abdul Baasi Mohammed aka Awudu Buju- at large, Yahaya Mohammed aka Olu, at large, and Osmanu Ibrahim aka OC, at large, had been arraigned for conspiracy to commit a crime and murder.

All the accused persons, expect those at large, pleaded not guilty to the charges and have currently be granted bail by the Kaneshie District Court, and are expected to make the next appearance on September 7, 2022.

The court was informed that the fall out between the two(the Chief and the deceased) follows a decision by the deceased to develop a piece of land at Klong Ramsar Site, which apparently, the Chief claimed to have sold to someone else.

The confusion led to a struggle and protracted litigation at Klagon, as the deceased left the Chief’s camp to join the opposing faction.

The assumed betrayal on the part of the deceased and other related incidents of having a hand in the seizure of unaccustomed vehicles from the Chief’s house, allegedly resulted in the plot to eliminate him.

Similarly, the insistence of the deceased on developing the land resulted in a physical confrontation between him and the accused persons, who destroyed footings he started on the land amidst threats on his life.

It was alleged that in order for the Chief to execute his plan, Latif Moro and Kwaku Anane aka Kobo, Hamidu Fuseini a.k.a. Sankara and their accomplices met in the house of Nii Bortey Klan I on November 15, 2020, in the morning at Klagon.

The court was told that at the said meeting, Nii Bortey Klan Iallegedly instructed Hamidu Fuseini a.k.a. Sankara to lead Latif Moro and three others to the deceased’s house to dig a trench across his main gate, purposely to prevent him from getting out of his house with a car.

However, later in the day, it was said that when the deceased was informed by a witness in the case, he instructed the witness to cover it with sand, but he was prevented by one of the accused persons who was now at large.

Regrettably, at about 3:00pm the same day, the deceased left his house on a motorbike, and about 100 metres away from his residence, he was attacked by Hamidu Fuseini a.k.a. Sankara, Awudu Buju and two others.

It was alleged that the deceased was kidnapped amidst gunfire, and put into Hamidu Fuseini a.k.a. Sankara’s private 4 x 4 Kia vehicle in which he was conveyed to an unknown destination.

The deceased’s son, who allegedly chanced upon the incident, reported it to his mother who also immediately informed the Klagon Police District Headquarters.

Unfortunately, the District Police Commander allegedly placed a phone call to Hamidu Fuseini a.k.a. Sankara to produce the victim at the Klagon District Headquarters, but he ignored the directives and allegedly killed the victim and later dumped his lifeless body in a bush within the Klagon vicinity.

The body was later discovered by the police and conveyed to the Police Hospital Mortuary, where a post mortem examination was performed on it by Dr. Stephen Annan and Dr. Osei Owusu-Afriyie, who gave the preliminary cause of death as “Asphyxiation, Strangulation, and Suspected Homicide.”  The pathologists concluded that the deceased died of unnatural cause.

Hamidu Fuseini a.k.a. Sankara was later arrested on November 18, 2020 and police investigations led to the arrest of Tahiru Mamudu aka Tsikata, Haruna, Latif and Kwaku, but the others had fled the Klagon community.

Ongoing investigations revealed that after the deceased was kidnapped into Fuseini a.k.a. Sankara’s vehicle, he was driven to the Chief’s house and later taken to the Klagon Ramsar Site where he was tortured to death.

Efforts are underway to arrest the accomplices as investigations continue.
