MTN Mobile Ghana his honoured its Mobile Money merchants and agents for their commitments, contributions and support to make it a household name even in the face of economic challenges.

Mr. Shaibu Haruna, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Mobile Money, at the dinner and Awards Night in Kumasi, explained that the honour was to say thank and reward 59 merchants and agents who worked to hold the brand in high esteem from operational areas toward achieving transition of its MoMo Services to a full business platform as part of a broader ambition for the 2025 strategy.

He said solid services would be introduced in the coming years to advance customer experience as an evolving mobile financial tool.

The top performing vendors received motorbikes, Smart TVs, laptops and CCTV cameras, with Kingdom Books Stationary at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus in the Kumasi Metropolis as the Overall Best MoMo Agent, taking home GH¢50,000 electronic cash (E- cash) and a motorbike.

In 2009, MTN Ghana set out to redefine the course of Ghana’s financial sector with the launch of MoMo and after 10 years of implementation, this e-financial mechanism had become a major bug in homes, and the business community in general.

The service has 11.3 million subscribers, with 250,000 agents and 200,000 merchants across the country. Mr. Haruna attributed the successes over the last decade to the critical contributions of merchants and agents.

He described the financial year as a difficult one with the introduction of e-levy, as well as the challenges customers had with accessing their MoMo wallets during the sim barring exercise.

He said their resilience as a people had enabled them to soldier on towards the celebration of their achievements and strategising for next year.

The top three awards were picked by Kingdom Books Stationary as the overall agent, while the first and second runners up were picked by Mr. Samuel Nti Adjei from Kumasi and Sibaweh Nasibatu from Tamale. They also took home GH¢20,000.000 E-cash, a motorbike and GH¢10,000.00 E-cash and a motorbike respectively.

Pastor to be sentenced for forging judicial document

0
Court

The Accra Circuit Court ‘9’ has deferred the sentence of a businessman who doubles as a Pastor, Seth Kwame Sallah, to today, November 15, 2022.

The court, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah, pronounced the accused guilty of forgery of judicial documents and possession of forged documents last week Thursday.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges, and, therefore, went through almost one and half years of a full trial.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Evans Kesse, according to him, both the complainant, Anang Atoklo, and the accused were businessmen and reside at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

He said during the year 2014, the accused had a barter arrangement with the complainant, by which the latter supplied the former with building blocks, and instead of paying him he was offered four plots of land located at Apollonia, with documents covering the said property.

The complainant went ahead to register the land in his name at the Lands Commission. However, in November 2020, the accused went to the complainant and asked him to vacate the land, pointing to a statutory declaration allegedly signed by Anang.

The complainant denied knowledge of the said statutory declaration and submitted the said document to the Police Forensic Laboratory for analysis.

Interestingly, the forensic analysis results validated the complainant’s suspicions, that the signature on the Statutory Declaration was not authentic.

The complainant reported the matter to police, and during investigations, several invitations were extended to the accused, including through his Secretary and his son, but were all turned down by him.

A criminal summons was served on the Pastor before he appeared before the court on August 7, 2021.

Martin King Arthur, known as Kofi Kinaata, has proven to personnel of the Army that when it comes to the entertainment battlefield, he is a force to be reckoned with.

The four times VMGA songwriter of the year, dazzled the soldiers with melodious songs from his most popular albums that blew the soldiers away from their seats.

Others could not control themselves but to sing along, as a sign of their in-depth knowledge of the musician’s songs.

Kofi Kinaata entertained the soldiers at this year’s West Africa Soldiers Social Activities (WASSA), held at the Army Headquarters in Accra, Friday.

Guest of Honour for the event, Major General Clayton Boanuba Yaache (Rtd) praised the personnel for their outstanding performance and contribution to international peacekeeping.

He urged them to continue to “demonstrate professionalism and discharge your assigned duties with all seriousness expected of peacekeepers.

Maj. Gen. C.B Yaache expressed concern over the rising threats of terrorism, violent extremism and other internationally organised crimes within the sub-region.

He was, particularly happy, about the pre-emptive measures taken by the army towards securing the states territorial integrity and preserving peace.

“Your relentless efforts at safeguarding the territorial integrity of our country, especially in these times of rising insecurity in the West Africa sub-region is remarkable. We greatly appreciate your selfless service and say a big thank you for all the sacrifice,” he remarked.

On social defiance, Maj. Gen. CB Yaache advised the officers against sex exploitation, abuse and other despicable vices, which repercussions are dire.

He also congratulated both military and civilian employees of the army, especially the awardees for the feat chalked.

Steven Spielberg regrets decimation of shark population after success of Oscar-winning film ‘Jaws’

Director Steven Spielberg

Director Steven Spielberg has said he “truly regrets” the decimation of the shark population following the success of the Oscar-winning film Jaws.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs he fears sharks are “mad” at him for “the feeding frenzy of crazy sword fishermen that happened after 1975”.

The film has been blamed for misrepresenting great whites and leading to trophy hunting in the US.

Spielberg also discussed his childhood and new film in the programme.

The 75-year-old American is known for many Hollywood blockbusters including E.T., Schindler’s List and Jurassic Park.

Asked how he felt about the sea around his desert island being inhabited by sharks, Spielberg told the programme: “That’s one of the things I still fear.”

Clarifying it was not a fear of being eaten, the director said the impact to the shark population is something “I truly and to this day regret”.

The 1975 film Jaws tells the story of a great white shark that attacks a US seaside town, which influenced a rise in sports fishing across America. Research has suggested the number of large sharks fell along the eastern seaboard of North America in the years following its release.

The songs Somewhere from West Side Story, Frank Sinatra’s Come Fly With Me and his daughter’s song Cool Hand were among the eight records he selected.

Spielberg also discussed his new semi-autobiographical film, The Fabelmans – which follows the story of his childhood and introduction to filmmaking.

“His name was Mohsen Shekari. Every international organisation who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action, is a disgrace to humanity,” she wrote.

According to a post on the state news agency IRNA’s Telegram account, she was arrested by police for failing to provide “any documents in line with her claims”.

Her Instagram account, which has more than eight million followers, was recently taken down.
