The Stadtwerke Neu-Isenburg GmbH, a utilities company in Germany, has donated computers to the German Ghanaian School at Atwima Denchemuoso in the Kwadaso Municipality of Kumasi.

The items comprised 17 desktop computers, six laptops, four printers and a projector as part of Stadtwerke’s support to the school.

The Neu-Isenburg City authorities were in the country in October last year as guests of the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly and paid a visit to the school, during which Mr. Kirk Reneke, Director of Stadtwerke Neu-Isenburg, promised to donate some used computers to the school upon his return to Germany.

Mr. Osei-Tutu Karikari, Director of the German Ghanaian School, who took delivery of the items, expressed his appreciation to Stadtwerke Neu-Isenburg for the support to augment its computer laboratory, especially the projector and the printers, to make the children to improve their tutorials in Information Communication Technology (ICT).

He said the school had some computers, but they were mostly obsolete, and that these new ones were obviously going to support their work and make things a bit easier for the school.

The German Ghanaian School, currently with a population of about 220 children from kindergarten to Junior High School (JHS), has wonderful educational infrastructure, located in a serene environment, and is run largely on non-profit basis as the fees charged are not commensurate with normal private school in the country.

I’m ready to change Ghana -Wilberforce Andrews

0
Mr. Wilberforce andrews, An independent presidential hopeful for the 2024 Election

An independent presidential hopeful for the 2024 Elections, Mr. Wilberforce Andrews, says he is ready to lead a paradigm shift that would make the economy more resilient and sustainable.

His touted a paradigm change, he explained, would bring about lasting solutions to the country’s chronic problems, end the winner take all syndrome, and distribute the national cake evenly.

Throwing light on his desire to lead the country as a president, Mr. Andrews noted that both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) had done their best to sustain the democratic gains of the country since the inception of the 1992 Constitution.

However, he was worried that both parties which had led the country in turns since the birth of the Fourth Republic had not done enough to liberate the country from poor economic policies.

“Though we are abundantly blessed with everything we need as a country, we keep going round in circles and begging due to poor leadership who operate a skewed system to benefit themselves,” he said.

“We are all witnesses to how this country has been governed by the parties that come and go after every eight years, and their modus operandi are well known to us all,” he added.

The alleged inability of both the NDC and the NPP to solve Ghana’s problems which keep evolving, he said, must rekindle a new sense of awakening among Ghanaians to support his mission.

Paradigm shift

According to the human rights activist, it was high time Ghanaians had a political paradigm shift and stopped gravitating towards the NDC and NPP and try a new system.

“I have carefully studied world political history and will apply the same success chalked by developed countries to eventually overturn the current situation in our nation,” he claimed.

“I can confidently say that I represent the new leadership drive that all Ghanaians have been calling for in our quest to steer our country into a new path where the interest of the whole country will be a priority,” he stated.

Modernising agriculture

Outlining how he would build the economy, the private businessman explained that “As a country, we must pay attention to agriculture, because it continues to be the back-bone of our economy.”

He added: “We must, therefore, see farming as a profession and inculcate this into the youth particularly those in basic and tertiary levels of our educational system.

“We need to think about modernising the agric sector to bring about value addition to whatever raw materials we produce locally and also concentrate more on what we have the comparative advantage to produce,” he stated.

This, he stated, would enable the country to export more to earn foreign exchange and drastically reduce import of foreign goods to strengthen the local currency.

“For instance, we consume rice, poultry and vegetable cooking oil which are all almost imported. Now the question is that why can’t we produce what we consume locally to stabilise the economy?” he quizzed

“We have the solution to all our artificial problems but we seem not ready to explore because we continue to experiment our future as a country with both NDC and NPP.”

He, therefore, called on Ghanaians to embrace the change he represented and support his vision to be able to build a new Ghana which would abhor corruption at all levels.

Addai-Nimoh to launch new face agenda for NPP to break the 8

0
Francis Addai-Nimoh

Mr. Francis Addai-Nimoh, a presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has recommended the adoption of a new face agenda by the party in order to break the 8-year jinx in Ghana politics.

He said after eight years in government, the party needed to be relieved of the facial fatigue of the leadership in its bid to go beyond eight years in governance.

The ex-lawmaker of Asante Mampong explained his position that a candidate who had been in the present government could not win power for the party in the 2024 elections, hence, the need for the party and delegates to consider his proposition.

According to Addai-Nimoh, the new face agenda which he would launch soon must be characterised by an unblemished character of a candidate who must be a unifier and whose moral aptitude should not be questioned.

“The flagbearer must be a new face with a new language and message, and a new appeal,” he told The Chronicle in an interview in Kumasi.

He said then candidate Atta Mills won the 2000 elections as a new face against Nana Akufo-Addo, who was a Foreign Minister in the Kufuor-led administration.

The presidential hopeful further explained that John Mahama, as a sitting president, could not win the 2016 elections due to the same facial fatigue.

He stressed that the candidate must not be part of the current government or administration, either as a minister of vice president, emphasising that in considering the choice of a candidate, the party must look at the immediate future (2024), medium (2028) and long term prospects (2032 and 2036) and beyond.

Mr. Addai-Nimoh said to secure the future of the party, the age of the candidate should be considered to determine the most suitable person who must also be popular to lead the party beyond the 2024 elections in case NPP was unable to break the 8.

Elaborating his position on age, Addai-Nimoh stressed that he was the most suitable person, because in case the NPP was unable to break the 8 in 2024, he would be 63 or 67 or 71 in 2028, 2032 and 2036, while Dr. Bawumia would be 65 or 69 in 2028 and 2032 in that order.

He said Kennedy Agyapong and Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen might be 68 and 74 respectively in 2028, and 72 and 78 in 2032.

He also flawed the imaginary queue in terms of leadership of the NPP, and said there must not be any such queue, and further stated that the party was not doing rotational leadership from the Busia, Dombo and Danquah traditions, because there was no such formula.

According to Addai-Nimoh, the “Yenimwo fri tete” slogan worked for Nana Akufo-Addo in 2007, because the message resonated without challenge.

He, therefore, suggested a lineal formula based on prevailing conditions in the party and in the country, for which the 2023 NPP flagbearership race must be open for the most suitable person to lead and win in 2024, 2028 and 2032.

According to him, the NPP would have an edge over John Mahama if it (NPP) fielded a new face.

He also envisaged that a new leadership for both the NPP and NDC would reduce the level of animosity between them and move the country forward.

Mr. Addai-Nimoh, Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituents from 2013 to 2020, contested the NPP flagbearership race in 2014 alongside Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Dr. Kofi Konadu Appraku, Mr. Joe Ghartey, Stephen Asamoah Boateng and Prof. Ekumfi Ameyaw and placed third in the election.

Direct Israel-Nigeria flight to commence–Official

Israel-Nigeria flight to commence

Bilateral relations and trade between Israel and Nigeria will rise with the commencement of direct flights between the two countries in March, according to Israeli authorities.
The Deputy Director-General, African Department, Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sharon Bar-Li, said this while meeting with some Nigerian journalists on a media tour to Jerusalem on Wednesday.

Mr Bar-Li said that the direct flights would further cement the relations between Africa and the Middle East.

“Once we are able to inaugurate direct flights between Nigeria and Israel we are going to see a boost because right now, there is no gateway for Israel into Africa.

“As a former Ambassador to Ghana, I can tell you that it is very difficult once you do not have a direct flight. Once this route starts working, we are going to see a huge change.

“We are going to see business flourishing; people will be able to come and go easily. We will see a pilgrimage,” she said.

The director-general said Nigeria was a very religious country and the citizens, both Christians and Muslims, went to Israel on pilgrimage.

“Do not forget that Jerusalem is a sacred place for free religions, not just to Christianity, not just to Judaism, but also to Islam where people come to mount to do little hajj.

“By March, I really hope to be able to welcome to Israel the Minister who will come on the first flight to inaugurate this route. It will be a very profitable route with a high demand for it.

“The eagerness to open this new route is a good sign for post COVID-19 recovery,” Ms Bar-Li said.

Court dismisses suit seeking Tinubu’s disqualification

Court

Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday dismissed a suit seeking disqualification of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Bola Ahmed Tinubu over their Muslim-Muslim candidacy for the 2023 presidential election.

The suit instituted by an Abuja-based legal practitioner, Mr Osigwe Ahmed Momoh was thrown out by the Judge on grounds of lack of locus standi by the plaintiff.

Justice Mohammed held that the lawyer not being a member of APC and having not participated in the process that produced Tinubu and his running mate, KashimShetima cannot query them on the nominations.

The legal practitioner had in the suit prayed the Court for an order nullifying the candidature of APC and Tinubu from participating in the presidential election on the ground that the nomination of Muslim-Muslim candidacy is unconstitutional and against the spirit and letters of sections 14, 15 and 224 of the 1999 Constitution.

Specifically, the lawyer who claimed to be an apostle of the rule of law and social justice argued that the Muslim-Muslim candidacy runs counter to the spirit of national cohesion, integration and unity.

He asked the court for an order of perpetual injunction to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from publishing the name of APC and its presidential candidate for the purpose of the 2023 election.

INEC boss explains why Nigerians in diaspora can’t vote

0
INEC boss Mahmood Yakubu

Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of Nigeria’s Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday, explained why Nigerians in the diaspora cannot vote in the upcoming February 2023 elections.Responding to a question about diaspora voting at a speaking appearance at Chatham House, London, United Kingdom, he said although the electoral body subscribes to it, the Nigerian law makes it impossible for such category of citizens to vote in the nation’s elections.

PREMIUM TIMES had earlier published Mr Yakubu’s full speech which he delivered during his session at the Chatham House.

“The position of law remains; unless you are resident in Nigeria, you cannot register and you cannot vote,” he said. However, “I am absolutely convinced that it is only a matter of time when this will be achieved,” Mr Yakubu added.

He narrated that the commission maintains an open-door policy and has collaborated with different diaspora groups to the point when the proposition for diaspora voting was sent to the National Assembly for deliberation where it was defeated.

The issue of diaspora voting has been an ongoing conversation and was among the issues thrown up for deliberation at the constitution review hearings last year.

In March 2022, the National Assembly struck out the proposal for diaspora voting even when INEC said it was ready.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) in September of the same year said it would continue to canvas it.

Diaspora voting allows non-resident Nigerians to vote and choose who leads the West African country.
