EXPERT CALLS FOR TECHNOCRATS AT AfCFTA COUNCIL OF MINISTERS

0
Louis Yaw Afful

Trade practitioner and Executive Director of the AfCFTA Policy Network (APN) Group, Louis Yaw Afful has called for signatories and parties to the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement to look to “critical technical experts” within Ministries of Trade when selecting successors to serve on the Council of Ministers of AfCFTA.

According to him, although the Council of Ministers constitute political appointees, often Ministers of Trade who serve as liaisons between the Heads of State and the AfCFTA Secretariat, they also play critical roles in the negotiation and review processes of the various protocols. Thus, some level of technical acumen is needed to successfully execute their mandate.

Louis Afful says this is necessary to ensure continuity in the AfCFTAobjective.

The Executive Director of the APN Group was speaking on the Eye on Port TV program where he drew inspiration from the case of the resignation of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Ghana’s Trade Minister who had also served on the Council of Ministers of AfCFTA.

According to the trade expert, Ghana was privileged to have someone like Hon. Kyerematen serve on the Council because not only was he a politician but a trade practitioner himself with years of experience in that industry.

“If you take Hon. Alan Kyerematen critically, he was not just a policy head to implement party manifestos and government agendas. He was more than just that- he was a technical person. He was at the Africa Trade Policy Centre which is a wing of Economic Community of Africa under UN.

He has had initial technical expertise in the whole AfCFTA process. You can put a Trade Minister of a different background there but when it comes to a certain cause where technical expertise is needed, there will be an impact of his unavailability.

They have to get somebody with the full technical expertise that he had in the cause for the AfCFTA implementation, else it will slow down Ghana’s drive.”

This he said led to the Minister’s crucial contribution to Ghana’s AfCFTA drive calling him “one of the architects and pioneers of the AfCFTA dream”. One of the major contributions he listed was his role during the formulation of the National AfCFTA Action Plan and Policy Framework – a document that spells out Ghana’s national strategy in the implementation of AfCFTA.

He said the CEO of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Afua Asabea Asare and the former CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, and current Deputy Minister of Trade Michael Okyere Baafi are among viable candidates that can take up the role of Ghana’s rep within the Council of Ministers at AfCFTA.

Alternatively, Mr. Afful suggested that the Chief Negotiators at the various Ministries of Trade in party states can play caretaker roles within the Council.

He emphasized the importance of momentum when it comes to the implementation of the free trade agreement and urged party states to endeavor to ensure continuity in spite of political changes.

THE CHURCH’S PROPHETIC VOICE IN “SECULAR” SOCIETY (PART I)

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

“He has showed you, O man, what is good.  And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” – Micah 6:8

Introduction

The community of believers in God, through Jesus Christ His Son, is empowered by God’s Holy Spirit to speak forth the Word of God’s salvation to secular society.  Even more importantly, we let the whole world see the transforming power of God in our lives by:

  • manifesting the character of Christ who lives in us;
  • being people of real integrity;
  • being hardworking
  • being diligent;
  • respecting authority (not in sycophancy but as an act of obedience to God)
  • making good use of our time.

Politics

What about the church’s prophetic voice in politics.  We are not called to play God.  What I mean is that we are not expected to bring the rule of Jesus Christ in this world before the appointed time of God.  But let me hasten to say that we are called to be the salt penetrating this rotten world.

We have a moral obligation to be involved in our world.  The Church has to point the society to God’s love for justice, for mercy, for ensuring the well-being of the needy, the oppressed, the widows and the orphans – Micah 6:8; Exo. 22:22-23.

The Church must let the leadership of secular society know that God hates corruption and bribery because this distorts justice and leads to the strong and the rich depriving the weak and the poor – Exodus 23:8; Deuteronomy 16:19.Rulers must be told of God’s hatred for the sin of idol worship which He considers spiritual adultery – Jeremiah 2:19-20.

The Church must constantly speak against selfishness, violence, nepotism and greed.  If this is deemed politics, then praise God because in pointing out these things and calling people to repentance, the Church will be obeying God.

Dangers

To maintain its prophetic voice, the church must steer clear of the sin of loving the world and making friends with it. Jesus warns us that the flesh is weak even though the spirit is willing.  The world’s allures are many.

They beckon us daily.  Satan is at his craftiest best seducing us in many ways.  Slowly, but with sure steps, the world is making in-roads in to the Church.

We are beginning to measure our success by the world’s standards, that is, by the number of people in the church and their material well-being, the size and beauty of our church buildings.

We look for the acclaim of men by how publicly we do our acts of charity and so on when we should see it as merely doing our duty.  God’s standard of success is only one – total obedience.

The cross of Christ was failure by the World’s standards but to God it was total success as Philippians 2:5-11 indicates: In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

In the letters to the Churches in Revelation 2 and 3, Jesus was very clear about their weaknesses which were mainly the result of using the world’s standards to judge themselves and thus, ignoring what is most important to God.

Empowered by God

It is God who has called out the Church and separated her to Himself so that she will reveal to the world what God wants to do for the world through Christ.  It is God’s testimony that counts.  When He calls, He equips.  The world needs Christ and God has freely offered Him as His gift to the world.

We must proclaim this message with boldness.  But above all our own lives, transformed by the renewing of our minds, will be the only way we can maintain our prophetic voice for then we will truly know and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect willRomans 12:2b.

Yes, through Jesus, God has saved us and given us His righteousness.  He has also given us the power to live righteous and godly lives.  In Titus 2:11 we read: “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.

That is why Peter also says in 2 Peter 1:4-8 that “Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises so that through them we may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world cased by evil desires.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.

For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The world must know that through Christ we can all live above our basic instincts.

The Church, that is the collective of all believers, can faithfully, boldly and with great eagerness maintain our prophetic voice in this secular, decadent sin-filled world, lifting Christ up that He may draw all men to Himself, because God has empowered us, so to do.

For God loved the world that He gave His one only Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but to save the world through Him!  We need to let the world know this!

Arsenal open talks to sign Brighton star Leandro Trossard for £20m

0
Leandro Trossard

Arsenal have entered the race to sign Brighton forward Leandro Trossard.

The Belgium international is in the midst of a stand-off with manager Roberto De Zerbi and is set to leave the Amex Stadium this month.

Tottenham have been monitoring his situation but Arsenal have stolen a march on their north London rivals by opening talks with Brighton over a January move.

Up until yesterday, Trossard was still training alone at Brighton and it is now increasingly likely that he leaves.

Mikel Arteta has been on the look out for a new forward this month and looked on course to sign Mykhailo Mudryk.

But Chelsea’s late intervention shattered their hopes of signing the Ukrainian.

The Gunners have moved quickly, however, to identify other targets and are now hopeful of getting a deal for Trossard over the line in the coming days.

Trossard and De Zerbi have had a public falling out of late, with the manager criticising the player’s attitude and work rate since his return from the World Cup with Belgium.

Alexander Zverev is struck by bird poo during his second round match at the Australian Open

Zverev had to go off court to wipe his hair

Alexander Zverev didn’t have the luck he would have hoped for when he was struck by bird poo during his second round Australian Open match.

The World No 13 crashed out of the tournament in Melbourne to American Michael Mmoh – who only entered the Open as a Lucky Loser after the withdrawal of David Goffin.

Zverev had claimed the first set, and was 2-2 in the second, before things started to fall apart.

About to take serve, the German felt something on his hair and started feeling it which was when he realised he had been hit by bird poo.

An embarrassed Zverev then starting wiping his hair with a towel, as spectators watching the match started laughing when they figured out what happened.

While Zverev would have hoped this would have brought him good luck, in fact, it had the opposite effect.

Mmoh levelled things up in the second set as the German started to struggle with his service game.

Things failed to improve for Zverev who then started making a number of unforced errors while Mmoh pounced on his opponent’s weak second serve.

Zverev only won 11 out of his 42 second serves throughout the match as the American clinched the biggest win of his career 6-7 6-4 6-3 6-2.

It is just the first time in Mmoh’s career that he has made it to the third round of any major.

For Zverev it was a disappointing outcome in what was his first major since making the semi-finals at last year’s French Open.

Timo Werner warns Nkunku he’ll ‘have to cope’ with increased mental pressure at Chelsea

0
Christopher Nkunku

Former Chelsea striker Timo Werner has warned RB Leipzig team-mate Christopher Nkunku he will need to cope with the increased mental pressure of playing for the Blues, as the Frenchman prepares to make a £53million summer switch.

Nkunku is expected to join Chelsea in the summer when his £53million release clause opens up at the end of the season.

Werner was asked by BILD whether he had any advice for his team-mate, having made an identical move in 2020.

The German international had been similarly viewed as one of Europe’s hottest forwards at the time Chelsea activated a £47.5million release clause to sign him, but returned to RB Leipzig last summer after a difficult spell in the Premier League.

‘Everyone has to make their own experiences,’ Werner said. I had a very good first year, the second was so-so.

‘I can tell him about positive and negative experiences should he change.  At a club like this, you don’t play like you do at RB Leipzig because there’s more competition – not just on a sporting level, but also on a different level, mentally.

‘You have to deal with that and everyone has to find their own way.

‘That’s why it’s the wrong approach to give tips to others. Time has changed me a lot.’

Why Michael Olise did not celebrate after scoring stunning free kick against Man Utd

0
Olise looked less than impressed with his efforts

Michael Olise left fans and players baffled after his strangely muted celebration having scored a stunning late equaliser against Man United. The Crystal Palace winger rescued a point for his side in their Premier League encounter with the Red Devils after scoring a stoppage time free-kick at Selhurst Park.

Despite the pandemonium in the stands, Olise looked almost unimpressed with his own effort – by performing a subdued celebration – and the reasons behind doing so have now been revealed by former team-mates.

Olise’s former Reading team-mate, defender Tom McIntyre, spoke with The Athletic and lifted the lid on the winger subdued scoring reactions.

‘We’d be like, ‘Mike, you’ve just scored an important goal and you’re just walking back? What’s he doing?

‘Then he’d play two-touch with the manager (Paunovic) in the gym, he’d win a point in that, and he’d be shouting and celebrating, but on a Saturday, he’d score a goal in front of the home end and just stand there.

‘We never really worked out why. He could never give us an answer but he’s just different; a special player.’

The France U-21 winger notched seven goals in three seasons at the Madejski Stadium before earning an £8.37million move to Palace in the summer of 2021. McIntyre – who has been at Reading his whole career – went on to suggest that the winger enjoys being ‘different and cool’.

‘Midway through last season, he unfollowed all of us on Instagram and only followed about 15 people,’ said the Reading defender.

‘There was no one from Reading except maybe one or two of his closest mates on there, which we all found pretty amusing.

‘I know what it is, he loves the rapper Lil Uzi Vert and there’s another few of those rappers he likes. They unfollow everyone on their Instagram and I think he wants to be like them. That’s strange to me and some of the lads but to him, that’s different and cool.’

In November last year, Olise gave a strangely blunt interview after scoring against West Ham.

G20 creditors on board for Ghana’s debt relief talks -Paris Club

0
Nana Akufo-Addo addressing the house

All member countries of the G20 group of economic powers are on board for a restructuring of Ghana’s debt and Paris Club members are ready to take the first step towards forming a creditor committee, an official from the Paris Club told Reuters on Thursday.

Ghana last week requested a restructuring of debt it owes to other governments, becoming the fourth country after Chad, Ethiopia and Zambia to do so under a G20 Common Framework.

The programme, which was launched in 2020, was supposed to streamline the process of coordinating among creditor governments the restructuring of low-income countries’ debts after the pandemic.

However, progress has proven glacial for the first cases, a situation Western countries have said is in part due to a lack of restructuring experience from China, a non-Paris Club G20 creditor that has become a major lender in recent years.

“There is a commitment by the leaders to form the creditor committee, so it’s a question of time. We know that all the G20 members are committed to undertake the debt treatment under the Common Framework,” the Paris Club official told journalists.

The official requested they not be named to speak freely about the restructuring situation.

Forming a creditor committee took a couple of months for previous cases but the official said the Paris Club members were all ready to do so for Ghana and hoped it could be done in a month.

The official said Ghana’s case was less complex than Zambia, whose case the official said was progressing after struggling since it became the first African country to default after the pandemic.

“We think that the process will become smoother and smoother on the basis of the previous cases,” the official said, adding that Ghana’s authorities had sought assurances its case would be dealt with in a “timely manner”.

Dual citizenship ‘ghost’ haunting NDC

0
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, NDC National Chairman

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) appears to have learnt a lesson from the aftermath of the 2020 general elections, and thus attempting to seal all holes ahead of the 2024 polls.

The party has announced that any member, who intends contesting any parliamentary seat, would have to convince the party that he/she does not hold dual citizenship.

According to the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the party does “not want to fall into this dual citizenship trap anymore.”

The move stems from the ongoing legal battle over the Assin North parliamentary seat, which was won by the NDC in 2020, but the election was overturned by the Supreme Court due to the eligibility crisis.

A citizen in the constituency challenged the nationality of the Member of Parliament, arguing that at the time he filed to contest the Assin North seat, he was a Canadian citizen, contrary to law.

The Court has since ordered him to stop holding himself as the Member of Parliament for the Assin North Constituency and should stop undertaking any parliamentary duties. The decision is, however, being challenged.

Since the ruling of the court, the MP has not been to Parliament. Even on the day the House voted on the Censure Motion on the Finance Minister, the Minority, who promoted the motion, had 136 votes, one less of their total number. That was because the Assin North MP did not vote.

Addressing a news conference yesterday, General Mosquito reiterated key portion of the regulations for the NDC primaries, during which he also touched on the dual citizenship issue.

FILING FEES

The NDC has announced May 13, 2023 for the Presidential and Parliamentary primaries. The General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey announced at the party headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.

Party members who intend vying for the flag bearer slot will pick a form at GH¢30,000.00and file same at GH¢500,000.00 – both non-refundable.

Parliamentary candidates will pick a form at non-refundable fee of GH¢5,000.00, and pay a filing fee of GH¢40,000.00 – also non-refundable.

PRESIDENTIAL COST

The General Secretary explained the reason for the GH¢500,000.00 filing fee, which is a GH¢200,000.00 increase from the 2019 fee.

However, Fifi Kwetey claimed that the GH¢500,000.00 for this year is “worth less than the GH¢300,000.00,” for which he blamed the Akufo-Addo government.

He fumbled to explained further that the leadership of the party settled for the GH¢500,000.00 because they “appreciate the difficult economic challenge this government has brought upon Ghanaians.Because of these difficulties we felt it was going to be not too easy to go as far as we should go, if we want to go in real terms…”

Horror! Lady Hangs Herself & Son

0
Mother and son hanging in an uncompleted building

A young lady believed to be in her mid-twenties has allegedly hanged her five year old son and later hanged herself. The incident occurred in an uncompleted building at‘Adwen Amba Ntsem’, near Ajoa, a fishing community in the Ahanta West Municipality.

It is not known why the young lady, whose identity is not known, decided to end her life together with her son.

But information available indicated that the lady and the son, who do not hail from the community, were on Tuesday, this week, spotted at Ajoa community begging for alms.

The next morning, news went round the community that the lady and her son had committed suicide.

A resident in the Ajoa community told this reporter that the lady might have struggled before allegedly hanging her son, because the hands of the boy was seen tied with a rope.

At the crime scene, the resident said the lady used a rope hanged to one of the beams on top of the uncompleted building to hang the son and herself.

The Police have since gone to the scene to take the two bodies to the morgue.
