Dr Bridjan Foster Ansong, the Deputy Director of Operations at the National Ambulance Service (NAS), has stated that NAS responded to over 110,000 cases across the country between 2020 and 2022.

He has, however, noted that the remarkable achievement notwithstanding, NAS cannot be said to be everywhere to be able to respond to all emergencies across the country promptly and stressed the need to have First Responders at various communities and strategic locations, who could respond and stabilise patients before the arrival of the ambulance crew.

Dr. Ansong disclosed this at a day’s life support workshop organised by  Elijeko Foundation, a non-profit organisation and Owesome Books, in collaboration with NAS, at the Garden City University  in Kumasi.

The workshop was aimed at equipping the general public with the information and skills required to provide pre-hospital medical interventions.

Participants included qualified medical professionals from George Washington University, USA, George Mission University, USA, and the Garden City University in Kumasi.

Dr. Ansong stated that it is in line with the shortfall that they have seen the partnership with Elijeko Foundation as very timely and beneficial to the development and growth of Emergency Medical Services in Ghana.

He urged other stakeholders, especially the NGOs in Health and other development partners to join this laudable initiative to ensure that more communities are trained in Basic Life Support Skills to help reduce the number of avoidable deaths in our country.

He assured Elijeko Foundation of NAS’ full cooperation and commitment to ensure that the partnership grows to help achieve the objectives of the programme as well as the achievement of the Universal Health Coverage for the country.

Mr Andrews Kwabena Nyantakye, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Elijeko Foundation noted the intervention was timely and could save somebody in critical condition.

He urged individuals to also help in their own small way in times of emergency, before calling for the Ambulance Service.

He disclosed that his outfit was working together with the NAS and National Blood Bank to support educational programmes, in an effort to reach out to many people as possible, to inculcate in them the need to give a helping hand in case of emergencies, to ensure quality healthcare delivery.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Education Minister

The Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has advised students to remain focused and study hard so that the huge investment being made in the education sector does not go waste.

He explained that if all students went to school regularly, attend all classes and study hard, there was no way they would not pass their examinations to make their families proud, move forward in their education process and also position themselves for the field of work after school.

Dr. Osei Adutwum gave the advice on Wednesday when he addressed the staff and students of Labone Senior High School (SHS) in Accra.

The unannounced visit was part of the Minister’s regular tour of schools to ascertain the first-hand state of affairs in the school, interact with them and also share the vision of the government on education in the country.

“You have been offered the opportunity to prepare yourself for a better future and whether you can attain that depends on how best you remain focused, and work hard by dedicating more time to your studies than socialising,” he said.

Dr. Adutwum who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bosomtwe enumerated the various interventions the government was putting in place to improve the nation’s economy through education development.

Again, he said the government is currently doing everything possible to ensure that students get the best support to enhance effective teaching and learning in all schools across the country.

He stated that “we are improving the teaching system by providing the necessary equipment and training of teachers so that they can make prudent use of the equipment for effective teaching and learning to take place”.

The Education Minister assured the leadership of the school of his desire to support their activities by providing them with the needed resources for effective teaching and learning to take place.

He pledged to donate two pianos to support the teaching and learning of music and other social gatherings at the school.

Mrs. Rejoice Accolor, Headmistress of Labone SHS, who was surprised by the visit of the Minister, was very happy and appealed to him to visit again to motivate both the teachers and the students anytime he had a free schedule.

He appealed to the Dr. Adutwum to help provide more infrastructure facilities in the school to create more learning spaces for more students to be admitted into the school.

The Education Minister used the opportunity to share breakfast with the students who were very excited seeing him sharing breakfast with them.

I’ll cut down unnecessary expenditure and fight corruption – Addai-Nimoh

Francis Addai-Nimoh - NPP flagbearer hopeful

A New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under the presidency of Francis Addai-Nimoh would ensure that the basic characteristics of the economy are maintained to address the equation between revenue and expenditure.

The flagbearer hopeful of the party said given the mandate to lead, he would cut down some unnecessary expenditure.

Giving an assessment of the performance of the government in an interview with The Chronicle, the former lawmaker of Mampong Constituency said the second administration of the ruling government had been characterised with controversy bordering on the choice of the Speaker, the Budget, introduction of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy), a hung parliament and low rate of Gross Domestic Product.

According to him, there is hope to correct the imbalance to stabilise the economy, which, he said, is currently in shambles and for which Mr. Addai-Nimoh intends to address the equation between revenue and expenditure.

He indicated that some unnecessary expenditure would have to be avoided citing the fan fair of sod cutting for projects.

He stated that commissioning of projects would take precedence over sod cutting ceremonies in his administration to avoid cost.

He said the presidency should not be involved in the commissioning of just any projects as there are projects which could be commissioned on behalf of the government or the presidency by Metropolitan, municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and government officials.

An Addai-Nimoh led- administration would not resort to incremental budget, the traditional way of budgeting. “We will do first principle budget” by tasking every minister to make inputs and look at salary structure of the appointed and elected in the public sector, he said.

The presidential hopeful further said his administration would take austerity measures to stop flamboyance and unnecessary expenditure on foreign trips by the presidency.

Addai-Nimoh also mentioned that officialdom would be psyched to improve on leadership styles as a way of fighting corruption.

The aspirant said since the opposition is part of government, the leadership of both majority and minority would be engaged in dialogue and periodic interactions on how best to address poverty and corruption in the face of available resources.

According to him, political opponents (opposition) are not enemies so his administration would engage them to look at ways of reducing corruption.

NPP, NDC have failed, vote for GUM – Osofo Kyiri Abosom

Christian Kwabena Andrew alias Osofo Kyiri Abosom, leader of GUM

The Found and former flag bearer of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Christian Kwabena Andrew, who is also known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, says with the current prevailing economic situation in the country, Ghanaian can only make it right if they vote for GUM.

According to him, GUM is the only alternative that Ghanaians could fall upon to turn the economic misfortunes of the state around.

Addressing the party’s maiden press conference of the year in Accra last Wednesday, he said the two dominant political parties had failed Ghanaians and they were the reason the citizens were suffering.

He said GUM had better development policies that would catapult the country from stagnancy to vibrancy.

Osofo Kyiri Abosom indicated that key policies that would be introduced by the party should they win power in 2024, would be to bring back state-owned enterprises and a review of Ghana education curriculum.

“We have a lot of social intervention programmes, but because of time let me pause here and offer some advice to the government before I draw the curtain down here,” he said.

Osofo Kyiri Abosom blamed the New Patriotic Party government for not heeding their warning and had dragged the country into a ditch.

Meanwhile, he stated that the government did not have anything to show for the over GH¢300 billion it had added to the country’s debt stock.

“The NPP should come out and show us what they have done with that money,” he lamented.

According to him, the various Auditor General’s Reports proved the two parties guilty.

He also condemned the construction of the National Cathedral and the fiscal intervention of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

When Children Are Reared

0
OPINION

Ghana, from independence, took up established traditional values and forms of discipline, which included the respect for adults and elders. As the saying goes, a child is born of a woman and brought up by the entire community. Everyone becomes responsible for the growth and discipline of that child.

A child who misconducted himself in town would get punished by adults and then dragged home, to be punished the more.

Three successful military take-overs took place in this country, without any change in the chain of command in the military and discipline was also enhanced across the land. These were, February 24, 1966; January 13, 1972 and July 5, 1978.

Then on June 4, 1979 and December 31, 1981 the lower ranks broke loose and took over the administration of this country. Chain of command broke down in the military, when suddenly the junior ranks realised that they could command their senior officers and even shave them with broken bottles.

Indiscipline broke loose and quickly spread into the country. Adults, who could be parents of these junior ranks, were dragged into public and crudely punished by these indiscipline soldiers, for alleged crimes which could never be proven to this day. And here women could be made to strip naked in public.

In 1979, three former heads of state and five senior military officers were executed in public for alleged economic malfeasance. Then, some forty-two years later, the judge/executioner came public to say those executed were only killed to sacrifice for the lives of some over eighty people who rather deserved to die.

So, indiscipline took-over and ruled the country for nineteen years and indiscipline among the young ones has now become the culture. We entered into the era where a teacher had no right to discipline a pupil.

Ghana gradually entered into the era of dzimakpla where children are reared and not brought up. A few children who grew up in well-disciplined homes followed the crowd and rebelled against the way they were brought-up and so became kplamase. There was the Child’s Right, a legal instrument which dictated to us the Rights of the Child but not the Responsibilities of the Child and the beat goes on.

With all these going on, are Ghanaians surprised when a video came public with some female students hailing insults at the president of this nation with unprintable words?

Eight or so, girls gladly stood in front of camera and publicly told our president things that decent people cannot utter, even in the privacy of their minds. First, the young ones started, publicly hooting at the president, now they have started publicly insulting him. What next? They could soon start throwing stones, rotten tomatoes and sachet water at him.

We have arrived. Ghana has now gotten to the stage, where our children are out of control. And the stupidity is that some insane adults, some who could be grandparents would teach and encourage the younger ones to insult adults including their own parents, with no regrets. There are Ahithophels around, breeding out Absaloms.

This culture of indiscipline is endorsed by some adults who still believe in the revolution. Most of such adults were either born in that era when gross indiscipline was established or were very young, in their formative years and so took this in as the norm.

Because one cannot understand the father of one of these rebellious students who came public, not to apologise to Ghanaians, but rather to tell us how traumatized his daughter was, when she was dismissed from school for insulting the president, using foul language.

In our days, when the child fell foul in disrespect to an adult, the parents would go on their knees and plead for mercy acknowledging the bad conduct of their child. No excuse whatsoever is given for the child’s misconduct, only pleading for mercy and then when they get home, that child will be severely punished.

But what do we have today? After saying that no responsible parent would condone such conduct of disrespect by insulting the elderly, one Mr. Martin Asiedu Darteh, a parent of one of the students sacked for insulting the president, starting telling Ghanaians that the punishment meted on the unruly students was too much and it would mean throwing them to the wolves.

He further went on to say, her daughter only took that irresponsible act as a joke, did not know they were secretly recorded. So, is this parent in effect saying that so long as the disrespectful child says it was all a joke, matters should be left.

Ghana Education Service (GES) did the right thing and sincerely apologised to the president and came back to punish the students.

Are our children now, being reared? If so, and since it looks like it, the future of this country is dark. We need the traditional form of discipline back.

Ban on cash withdrawals from public accounts not to fight Govs –NFIU

Customers get new naira notes over the counters

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has said that its ban on cash withdrawals for all federal and state accounts is to help governors and not to fight them.

The NFIU, made this known in a statement on Saturday by its Chief Media Analyst, Ahmed Dikko, hours after the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) faulted the January 5, 2023 announcement by the NFIU, directing banks to stop executing demands for cash from public accounts from March 1, 2023.

“The recent NFIU Advisory and Guidelines on cash transactions were simply outside the NFIU’s legal remit and mandate,” Governor Aminu Tambuwal-led NGF said in a statement.

The NGF also set up a six-member committee to engage the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in addressing “anomalies in the country’s monetary management and financial system”.

In its reaction, the NFIU said, “First of all we are ready to partner with the six-man committee they set up. We will enlighten them.

“Secondly we acted within our functions and the law. We issued the Guidelines to control the barrage of investigations that we saw coming. Our Guidelines were meant to help the Governors not to fight them or any public servant.”

“Last time we issued the local government guidelines we were taken to court but we won the case.

“Finally, we also clearly stated in the preceding advisory, that the entire financial system suffered excess liquidity and liquidity ratio infringements which put hedging pressure on demand for foreign currency and gradually destroyed the value of the Naira and above all created wide room for money laundering and terrorism affecting significantly the rural populace on top of general inflation in the open market place.

“We support working together to stop these challenges and in the most progressive manner,” the statement added.

South Africa Cuts Power To Nigeria Consulate Over Unpaid Bills

Nigeria Consulate

The Nigerian consulate in Johannesburg has complained to the South African government after city authorities disconnected the consulate’s electricity supplies over unpaid bills, a government official said Friday. City officials on Wednesday went to the consulate, in an upmarket northern suburb, to cut off supplies over 400,000 rand ($23,300) in outstanding charges, according to a city official.

The consulate denied the officials access, describing them in a statement as “an invasion squad”. Supplies were remotely switched off.

South Africa’s foreign ministry spokesman Clayson Monyela told AFP Friday that the consulate has “dispatched a diplomatic note to us”.

“The matter is being handled through diplomatic channels. We’ll engage all parties involved in order to find an amicable solution,” he said.

In a statement, the consulate blasted the city’s action as “in complete violation of… international treaties and conventions, especially the Vienna Convention on consular relations, which guarantees the inviolability of consular premises”.

Electricity supplies were reconnected the same day following promises the account would be settled by the end of the month.

“We disconnected them on Wednesday during our revenue collection blitz,” city power spokesman Isaac Mangena told AFP.

The consul-general visited the city offices after the disconnection and “acknowledged the debt”, and negotiated to settle the arrears by the end of the month, said Mangena.

“They made an arrangement to (settle) the account by end of January,” he said.

“We are not treating them as a special customer, but like any other,” he said.

Residents and businesses owe the city, the country’s financial and commercial hub, more than four billion rand in outstanding bills.

South Africa is in the grip of crippling power shortages forcing the power company Eskom to ration supplies.

Election 2023: Tinubu’s campaign director resigns

0
Director of the Civil Society directorate of the Presidential Campaign Council of the APC, Najatu Muhammad

The Director of the Civil Society directorate of the Presidential Campaign Council of the APC, Najatu Muhammad, has quit partisan politics.

Ms Muhammad announced her decision in a letter dated 19 January and addressed to the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Adamu.

She stated that she is resigning from partisan politics due to lack of ideological differences among political parties.

Ms Muhammad said recent developments in the political space made it impossible for her to continue partisan politics.

The letter reads, “In line with article 9.5 (i) of the Constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I am writing to you to intimate you of my resignation from the All Progressive Congress (APC). I am by this letter also informing you of my resignation as the Director of the Civil Society directorate of the Presidential Campaign Council of the APC.

“It has been a great honour working with you (Mr Adamu) to contribute towards the building of our dear nation. However, a number of recent developments in the country’s political and democratic space, make it impossible for me to continue to participate in party politics.

“After much reflection and careful consideration, I have decided to part ways with party politics. I have come to the realization that my values and beliefs no longer align with party politics. Our political parties have no ideological differences and are simply robes that politicians wear to serve their personal needs and interests at any given time. As a result of which we see politicians changing from one robe to another whenever it suits them.”

Ms Muhammad said she would rather support candidates at a personal level instead of through a political party.

“What is important at this point in time is the individual wearing the robe and not the robe itself. I am committed to supporting individuals that are truly interested in addressing the root causes of our challenges as a nation. To remain true to such commitments, one must be willing to take bold and decisive steps,” the letter reads.

In 2016, Ms Muhammad, a very vocal supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, rejected her appointment as chairperson of the Governing Council of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State.
