The Department of State Services (DSS) has deployed its operatives to the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos, DAILY POST learnt on Tuesday.

The personnel said to be more than a dozen, arrived at the penitentiary located in the Apapa area late afternoon of Sunday, March 12.

Their presence is linked to an alleged attempt on the life of one of the daughters of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Osinbajo, a former Commissioner of Justice in Lagos, and his wife Dolapo have two daughters Damilola and Kanyinsola and a son Fiyinfoluwa.

Since arrival at Kirikiri, the DSS agents have been patrolling inside and outside the premises in search of an individual who issued “a serious threat”,

DAILY POST gathered that the target, suspected to be an inmate, used a mobile phone which the secret service tracked to the location.

“The DSS has been there since Sunday evening and of course, their presence has brought about some panic.

“The officers believe the person they are looking for is in one of the cells or somewhere around the prison,” a source hinted.

DSS Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya requested a text message when contacted for a reaction. There was no reply as of press time.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Pantami

No fewer than 12.9 million cyber attacks have been recorded from within and outside the country during the just-concluded Presidential and National Assembly polls. The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Pantami, disclosed this on Tuesday, saying over 6.9 million attacks were recorded on election day alone.

According to Pantami, the attacks were successfully blocked owing to the sophisticated infrastructure on the ground by different agencies of government charged with the responsibility of protecting the nation’s cyberspace.

While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for providing the enabling environment for agencies of government to perform their assignments without let or hindrances, the Minister stated that in the build-up to the presidential elections, threat intelligence revealed an astronomical increase in cyber threats to Nigeria’s cyberspace.

“A total of 12,988,978 attacks were recorded, originating from both within and outside Nigeria. It is worth noting that the Centers successfully blocked these attacks and/or escalated them to the relevant institutions for appropriate action,” Pantami said, according to a statement by his media aide, Uwa Suleiman.

“During this period, a series of hacking attempts were recorded, including Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), email and IPS attacks, SSH Login Attempts, Brute force Injection attempts, Path Traversal, Detection Evasion, and Forceful Browsing.

“The parastatals, under the supervision of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, have played a crucial role in providing the enabling environment for the successful conduct of a credible, free, fair, and transparent election.”

He also commended the cybersecurity centre established under his Ministry, including the National Information Technology (NITDA)’s Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team (CERRT), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT), and Galaxy Backbone (GBB)’s Security Operations Centre (SOC) for a job well done.

Digital Technologies penetration still low in Sub-Saharan Africa -WB

0

With Africa’s share of the global workforce projected to become the largest in the world by 2100, it is critical for African countries to increase the uptake of digital technologies* to drive employment growth for the more than 22 million Africans joining the workforce each year, emphasises a new report released today.

The “Digital Africa: Technological Transformation for Jobs” report provides a comprehensive analysis of how digital technologies can enable economic transformation and boost jobs in the region. It also sheds light on how policy and regulatory reforms can widen the availability and increase usage of digital technologies.

Of all the regions in the world, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) displays the largest gap between the availability of digital infrastructure and people’s actual usage.

On average across countries in SSA, 84% of a given country’s population had at least some level of 3G mobile internet availability and 63% had some level of 4G mobile internet services, but only 22% were using mobile internet services at the end of 2021, according to numbers collected by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association using a methodology focused on unique subscribers.

Usage rates range from a low of 6% in South Sudan to 53% in South Africa, underscoring the heterogeneity of average use and the need for differentiated policy reforms across countries.

The minimal usage of mobile internet is a lost opportunity for inclusive growth in Africa,” said Andrew Dabalen, World Bank Chief Economist for Africa. “Closing the uptake gap would increase the continent’s potential to create jobs for its growing population and boost economic recovery in a highly digitalized world.

Even though technology and innovation are known to drive long-term economic growth and can lead to much-needed modernization in economic activities across agriculture, manufacturing and services, the digital divide continues to grow between large formal and micro-sized informal enterprises, between young men- and older women-owned enterprises, and between richer, urban, and more educated households and poorer, rural, and less educated households.

Only 2% of micro-sized firms owned by young women and 8% of micro-firms owned by young men use a computer.

The report highlights evidence that internet availability has a positive impact on creating jobs and reducing poverty in African countries. For example, in Nigeria, labor force participation and wage employment increased by 3 and 1 percentage points, respectively, after three or more years of exposure in areas with internet availability.

Job estimates for Tanzania found that working-age individuals living in areas with internet availability witnessed increases of 8 percentage points in labour force participation and 4 percentage points in wage employment, after three years of exposure. Moreover, the proportion of households falling below the national basic need poverty line dropped by 7 percentage points.

“To transform internet availability into productive usage and job growth, the region needs affordable access, digital skills and digital technologies that meet the needs of Africans,” said Christine Zhenwei Qiang, World Bank Global Director for Digital Development.

“Continuous sector reforms and targeted public investments that support digital economy foundations and digital uptake can help close the digital divide and unleash tremendous potential for more and better jobs for Africa’s growing population.”

For the 40% of Africans who fall below the global extreme poverty line, the cost of basic mobile data plans is often out of reach. Small and medium-sized businesses in Africa also face more expensive data plans than businesses in other regions. To bring down costs, governments should aim to promote competition in the provision of digital infrastructure and reduce operational costs.

To boost productive usage, governments should implement policies that support the development of more attractive digital solutions geared to the skills and productive needs people have while building broader awareness and education.

Policies that foster innovation and support digital start-up entrepreneurs are essential to ensure that more Africans use the internet for jobs and learning, which will lead to higher standards of living.

When digital technologies better meet the needs of people, households and firms, demand for their use will also increase, making internet expansion more commercially viable, and supporting a virtuous cycle of technology-led transformation.

*For the purposes of the report, digital technologies are defined broadly to include not only digital and data infrastructure, broadband internet, smartphones, tablets, and computers, but also a wide range of more specialized productivity-enhancing digital solutions ranging from communications, management upgrading, and worker training to procurement, production, marketing, logistics, and financing.

Discussants rally financial support for businesses to leverage AfCFTA

The AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra

An array of seasoned professionals selected across various sectors to deliberate on the National African Peer Review Mechanism Governing dialogue on corporate governance has called for support for businesses to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The support is expected to boost intra-African trade, promote industrialisation, create jobs and improve the competitiveness of African industries on the global stage.

African nations currently trade more internationally than with one another as intra-African trade accounted for 17 per cent of African exports compared to 59 per cent for Asia and 68 per cent for Europe, according to the World Economic Forum.

Dubbed: “Corporate Governance as a Catalyst for the Implementation of African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the discussants said the private sector needed an enterprising mindset to succeed under the initiative.

Sharing his thoughts at the forum in Cape Coast on Monday, Dr. James Tuffour, a Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast School of Business, championed the need to harmonise the relevant policies, programmes, laws and regulations.

That, he said, was the way to boost the productive capacities of the private sector in the country, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises, to harness the full benefits of AfCFTA.

“Maximising AfCFTA’s benefits will require Ghana developing a national strategy that will identify opportunities for financial growth and deliberately create the right environment, using policy to ensure that the private sector thrived,” Dr. Tuffour stated.

Broadly, the objective of the review was to identify and improve corporate governance policies, standards, and practices in the country to harness the benefits of the implementation of AfCFTA in the country.

Specifically, it examined corporate governance structures, legislation, and regulations to enhance the regulatory framework and environment for ease of doing business by companies.

The outcomes are expected to improve and increase cross-border trade, market access, capital flow, productivity, innovation, and competitiveness of domestic firms and the business sector’s position to optimize trade opportunities under the AfCFTA.

Nearly two decades ago, Ghana took the first step to offer itself to peer-review, and through that, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned a new review assessment of Ghana through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration together with NAPRM Government Council and Ghana’s targeted review Mission Team from South Africa.

Contributing to the discussions, Mr. Ralph Amuzu Ahianyo, the Human Resource Manager at the Komenda Sugar Factory, called for a well-diversified financial services industry that could support anything from start-up early-stage, growing businesses, and mature businesses.

“Financial support, transportation challenges and labour-related issues are affecting SMEs and if SMEs do not have those types of financing available, we probably will not be able to sustain our businesses,” he said.

Mr. Ahianyo expressed the hope that the successful implementation of the plan will boost the capacity of the private sector to take advantage of market access opportunities in Africa to promote ‘Made-in-Ghana’ goods and services.

African countries such as Ghana cannot overcome the current economic challenges induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war if they do not develop measures to improve the productive capacities of the private sector and increase intra-African trade.

Representatives of the Ghana Federation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) proposed the establishment of a Disability Fund to financially support only PWDs to grow their businesses.

Other speakers, who took turns to address the gathering, acknowledged that the effective operationalisation of the AfCFTA agreement in Ghana would significantly boost the balance of trade, stimulate investment and innovation, diversify exports, improve food security, foster structural transformation, enhance economic growth, and provide jobs for the youth.

Dr. Willard Mugadza, a consultant with the NAPRM– Governing, called on private entities to collaborate with the government and form synergies to take full advantage of AfCFTA.

According to him, industry actors have on-field knowledge, which makes them the right partner to help the government achieve its development objectives.

He said most private firms in Ghana were yet to develop a corporate strategy to gain a competitive advantage in the AfCFTA, months after trading had started.

He said the failure to develop a corporate strategy was not for the lack of knowledge of the AfCFTA, but the lack of ability to take advantage of the initiative and see Africa as a big market for their products.

High Consumption of processed foods causes kidney disease -Dietitian

0
Madam Madina Habib, a Dietitian at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital

Madam Madina Habib, a Dietitian at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) has revealed that the high consumption of processed and unwholesome foods contributed to the increased rate of kidney-related diseases in Ghana.

She said a study conducted on patients diagnosed with various stages of kidney disease at the hospital and across the country attested to this fact.

Madam Habib made the revelation at a free health screening exercise organised by the CCTH, as part of activities to mark the 2023 World Kidney Day.

She advised the citizenry to reduce the intake of artificial spices to avoid complications, which led to serious health problems.

“Now that we are strong let us eliminate the intake of artificial spices in our diet, take the natural ones to protect us from contracting kidney related diseases,” she advised.

The Dietitian further encouraged the intake of protein foods such as fish, eggs, and beans, among others for muscle strength, to enable people carry out their daily activities with ease.

Madam Eunice De Graft-Eshun, the Nurse in -charge of the dialysis Unit at the hospital, explained that the kidney was a vital organ in the human body that needed routine checkup for early detection of any ailment and treatment.

She said the hospital recorded three to four kidney cases every week, describing the situation as ‘alarming’ which needed education and sensitisation for prompt attention to reduce the menace.

Additionally, she disclosed that the free screening was to detect and diagnose patients at the early stage for effective management, and to also prevent them from reaching the advanced stage of starting dialysis, which may put pressure on their little resources.

More than 100 residents benefitted from the free screening for their blood pressure and blood sugar levels, urine protein, body Mass Index (BMI), as well as education on healthy lifestyles, including good eating habits, and regular exercising.

Persons with detected complications were referred to the hospital for further investigations.

Aunty Akua Mansa, a beneficiary after the screening, said she heard about the dangers related to kidney diseases on radio and quickly took advantage of the exercise to safeguard her health.

She appealed to the Government to implement measures to help reduce the cost of kidney tests, to encourage more people to do routine checkups for early prevention of the disease.

Steve Harvey

In the eyes of Steve Harvey, Ghana is the gateway to Africa, hence anyone who wants to visit the continent should first make a trip to the West African country with H.E Nana Addo as its President.

The globally celebrated TV presenter was speaking to Americans during a TV show. He encouraged his fellow citizens to travel to Africa to gain a better understanding of African culture and the significant contributions made by Africans to the world.

According to Mr Harvey, people living outside Africa must put aside any preconceived notions and visit Ghana first, followed by Botswana, which he describes as the world’s second-largest diamond producer with a lot to offer.

Leave everything you’ve ever heard. After you go to Africa, you got to go to Ghana first, and then you need to go to Botswana because you need to see what we… (Pause.)
