The St. Nicholas Foundation School has received a 30-seater minibus from a funding initiative under the care of the Greek Foreign Minister, Mr. Nikos Dendias.

The exemplary initiative saw the active funding by Mr Evangelos Mytilineos and Ms Sophia Daskalaki Mytilineou, bringing to reality the bus for the school.

The presentation of the bus to the school coincides with the celebration of the Greece Independence Day, which falls on March 25.

It was the first time that the St Nicholas School celebrated the Greece Independence Day with a display from the school cadet, poetry recitals in Greek as well as a historic dance of zonglona, which showed the resilience of women in the face of war.

The independence celebration was also to honour the immense support given by Greece, and to thank the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dendias together with the Mytilineos Group and family for their constant support as well as the Tsakos family and Maria Tsakos Foundation.

In an address read on his behalf, Mr. Nikos Dendias reiterated the commitment of the Greek government to ensuring continuous support for the school.

“I wish to reassure all of you that Greece and the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs will always stand by your side in your future endeavours,” he said.

Mr. Dendias congratulated the students for their accomplishments in education, saying it set the groundwork for a successful and prosperous future.

“We are reminded that education is key to affect real change in our lives and our society,” he said and lauded the contributions of the Greek government and other donors to the school’s efforts for more educational opportunities, including the construction of a basketball court, as well as the new bus offered by Mytilyneos.

The Tema Traditional Council was well represented

Recently, the Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias announced plans to finance the construction of a basketball court for the St. Nicholas Foundation School.

The Minister made the announcement during a visit to the school, his second, in the last two years and requested the basketball court be named after “Giannis Antetokounmpo” a Greek Nigerian NBA player.

“A student from the school said that To have the name of a Nigerian (African) Greek, Giannis Antetokounmpo will show us wherever you are born, you can aspire to overcome every obstacle.

Mr. Evangelos Mytilineos, Chairman of Mytilineos, in a speech read on his behalf by Miss Forgive Setuagbe, a student, congratulated the students for their dedication to education, the diligence to succeed in their goals and their effort to claim a better future for you and your families.

“Nothing in life is achieved without effort and sacrifice! Freedom, education, equality of opportunity, respect for the people, the environment, the history and the culture are stable values that strengthen societies and create pioneers,” he said.

“Your school and its donors and administrators provide you with this opportunity with care, love, and vision. In this vision, we as Mytilineos we assure you that we are next to you,” he added

Mytilineos since its first operation in 2015 in Ghana, have carried out social welfare projects and environmental initiatives amounting to over six million Ghana cedis.

The company built a canteen and a six unit classroom for the St. Nicholas school.

“In this future that we are all shaping together, you, the children of the future, must be pioneers and with the same effort and sensitivity draw the lines that the generations after you will follow.

“Personally, I would like to wish you all success in your endeavors and to promise that we, Mytilineos, I personally, are by your side in your next steps,” he said.

He expressed the hope that the new bus presented to the school would safely transport students to school.

“Our promise to every student and everyone working at the school is that we will continue to be part of your journey,” Mr Mytilineos added.

The school was built and funded by the Tsakos Family and Foundation and since its establishment in 2012, there have also been support from other Greek companies under the Efthymiadis family Leon and Lotus Shipping.

Maria Asmarianaki has also brought in many donors to support the Greek culture and heritage.

The school is pursuing a dedicated vision in progressing and maintaining the Hellenic influence, both ancient and modern, amid an all-round education and culture.

Commenting on the donation of the bus, Madam Deborah Eleazar, a Founding Trustee, attributed the progress of the school and the success chalked so far to the support from Greek donors and trustees.

She acknowledged the immense contributions of the Tsakos family and Foundation in honour of their beloved daughter, Maria Tsakos as seen in the continued support given in the running of the school and providing food.

“We also have been extremely grateful for the support given by Mytilyneos building projects throughout the school as well as the Honourary consul of Greece in Ghana, Mrs Marianna Gavriel.”

This has enabled the school to be currently educating 194 children with adequate classrooms and teachers and have successfully had their first graduates who all passed their Basic Education Certificate Examination and obtained entrance to KETASCO.

“To the whole of the Greece and the Greek Community, we say thank you for your love and support,” Celestine Bibah, a student said in a welcome speech.

“To the Greece, the seat of democracy, culture, wisdom and education we wish you to always be free,” she added.

Numo Cephas Adjei-Pinto of the Tema Traditional Council lauded the enormous progress the school had made over the last 10 years.

He said the new school bus would help children, who live far from the school to access quality education.

Mr Ivan Quashigah, a trustee of the St. Nicholas Foundation School, said the Greek community had made great contributions to the development of the school since its inception in 2012.

He said the new school bus will address the challenge of conveying the students to and from school.

Greece is an inspiration for democracy, philosophy, wisdom and culture, and the children have learnt much from there close ties with Greece.

We are also so pleased to see that the seed you planted over 12 years ago, continues to flourish and grow with your continued support.

Journalist Jalingo

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, presided over by Justice Zainab Abubakar has remanded a journalist and publisher of an online medium, CrossRiverWatch, Agba Jalingo, at the Medium Security Custodial Center in Kuje, for allegedly publishing an article that was deemed ‘insulting’ to Mrs Elizabeth Ayade, The PUNCH reports.

Mrs Elizabeth Ayade is wife to the younger brother of the Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, whose administration, Jalingo’s Cross River Watch has been critical of.

Present in court during Jalingo’s arraignment was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 general elections, Mr Omoyele Sowore, and other activists and members of the Nigerian Civil Society.

The PUNCH reports that two charges bordering on alleged false publication intended to cause annoyance, ill will and insult to the person of Mrs Ayade, wife to Mr Frank Ayade, were preferred on Mr Jalingo in suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/565/2022.

He is alleged to have committed an offence punishable by Section 24 (1)b of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act 2015.

Mr Jalingo who was arraigned on Monday, March 27, pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The prosecution counsel, Fidelis Ogbobe, sought an adjournment for trial which the defense counsel, Baba Isa, did not oppose but pleaded that the matter be stood down as the lead counsel, Marshal Abubakar, was on his way.

However, Ogbobe opposed Isa’s application, citing Section 354 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 which stipulates that when parties are called, the court shall proceed to hear the matter.

He argued that, “The excuse is a calculated attempt to postpone the arraignment,” and asked the court to not take the defence seriously.

INEC fixes date for supplementary elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, April 15 for governorship, national and state assembly supplementary elections.

The commission made the disclosure in a tweet on Monday.

“Arising from its meeting held today, the Independent National Electoral Commission has decided that all outstanding Governorship, National and State Assembly supplementary elections will take place on Saturday 15th April 2023.

“A detailed official statement will follow shortly,” the tweet reads.

The announcement comes barely one week after the governorship elections of Kebbi and Adamawa states were declared inconclusive.

Last Monday, the election in Kebbi was declared inconclusive due to breaches of electoral laws that led to cancellation of results in polling units within 20 of the state’s 21 local government areas (LGAs).

INEC’s Returning Officer in the state, Professor Yusuf Sa’idu, said violence, destruction of election materials, disruption of electoral proceedings and over-voting played a role in having the election declared inconclusive.

Before declaring the election inconclusive, the All Progressives Congress (APC) was leading the poll with 388,258 votes, as against 342,980 votes scored by the PDP.

Nigerian Army chief testifies over alleged mass abortion

0
Chief of Army Staff, Farouk Yahaya

The Nigerian Army has formally dismissed a Reuters report of alleged mass abortion carried out by the military on victims of Boko Haram terrorism in the North-east.

The Chief of Army Staff, Farouk Yahaya, issued the denial Saturday in Abuja while testifying before a panel set up by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate the matter.

The panel is officially known as Special Independent Investigative Panel on Human Rights Violations in the Implementation of Counter Insurgency Operations in the North East (SIIP-North East).

Mr Yahaya, a lieutenant-general, said the military has a key goal of combating insurgents and restoring peace in the troubled region. It, therefore, could not have embarked on the secret abortion programme alleged in the Reuters report.

He denied the Reuters’ report of the abortion of 10,000 pregnancies, the massacre of children and other allegations of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence against the army. He challenged the international media outlet to substantiate the claims.

Though the Nigerian military authorities had issued a statement to deny the story, Saturday was the first time Mr Yahaya would publicly react to the issue.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported that Reuters in an investigative report published in December 2022 alleged that the Nigerian military operated a secret programme, terminating at least 10,000 pregnancies of women who were freed from Boko Haram terrorists in the troubled region.

It reported that the Nigerian military since 2013 carried out “a secret, systematic and illegal abortion program in the country’s northeast, ending at least 10,000 pregnancies among women and girls” who were kidnapped and raped by Islamist militants.

The report triggered global outrage with the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, calling on the Nigerian government to begin a thorough investigation and “immediate remedial actions and accountability measures.”

Court dismisses suit challenging traditional stool of Oba of Ogba land

Court hammer

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Omoku town in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state has dismissed a motion by the current Oba of Ogba land, Nwachukwu Nnam-Obi, in a suit challenging his occupancy to the traditional stool.

After Nnam-Obi was selected as the Oba of Ogba land, the claimants in the suit, Prince Henry-Nwata and members of his family, approached the court to stop him from being installed.

The claimants also sought an interlocutory order to restrain the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike from issuing a certificate of recognition to Nnam-Obi, but rather to recognize Henry-Nwata who they claimed is the rightful person to occupy the stool of Oba in their land.

Nnam-Obi, through his legal team in his preliminary objection, asked the court to strike out the suit by Henry-Nwata and members of his Umuebe in Umuokoya kindred for lack of jurisdiction and locus standi to institute the legal action.

But the trial Judge, Justice Mark Chukwu in his ruling on the preliminary objection, ruled that the claimants have the locus standi to institute the action, with reference to sections of the Nigeria constitution and sighted cases.

Justice Chukwu, before adjourning to the 22nd of May for commencement of trial on the substantive matter, also struck out the name of Agip Oil Multinational from the suit, following their request which was not objected by the parties.

Other defendants in the suit include; Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, Attorney General of Rivers State, Commissioner for Justice and Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs in Rivers State.

Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, today showed off a necklace he said was worth over GHc700,000 in the Pulse Ghana office.

The 29-year-old musician showed off his gold and diamond-plated necklace and said it was the most expensive jewellery on him at that moment.

Disclosing the prices of the clothes and accessories he was wearing, Medikal said his necklace cost $62,000 (740,000), while his grillz cost $15,000.

Asked about his dress, the rapper told Pulse.com.gh: “I’m wearing myself. I like to wear myself. [My grillz] cost like $15K, my watch cost like $30K.

“My ring was a gift, I don’t even know how much it is. The shirt is just a regular T-shirt, the trouser is Gucci.

“This [necklace] is the most expensive thing I’m wearing. It’s like $62K,” the Cold and Trophies singer added.

Meanwhile, Medikal recently revealed that the only reason he has not given fellow rapper Amerado any attention is because he (Amerado) is below his level and does not deserve his time and attention.

According to the ‘Omo Ada’ hitmaker, he only pays attention to artists who are ahead of him in the game and thus would not waste energy on clout-chasers.

Bullgod questions Okraku-Mantey’s bid for parliament

0
Bulldog

Talent Manager, Lawrence Asiamah aka Bullgod, formerly Bulldog has expressed his opposition to Mark Okraku-Mantey’s bid to become a member of parliament in 2024.

Okraku-Mantey, who currently serves as the Deputy Minister for Tourism and Creative Arts, confirmed in a recent interview that he plans to contest for the Ayensuano parliamentary seat in the Eastern Region on the ticket of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

During an appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz, Bullgod criticized Okraku-Mantey’s record in government, stating that he has not done enough to warrant the support of his constituents.

“Some of his constituencies should not waste their time voting for him because he will not bring any change. Let me state it here clearly, and I know he will see it. Sitting here, I respect Mark as a person 100%, but when it comes to governance, I won’t even give him zero points minus, he won’t even get it,” he said.

Bullgod went on to suggest that Okraku-Mantey should not run for office, stating that he does not have the necessary skills or experience to be an effective leader.

He also suggested that Okraku-Mantey’s constituents should not waste their time voting for him because he will not bring any meaningful change to their lives.

“Just being there, and looking at the contribution he made, I don’t even need to sit here and talk about Mark’s achievements, too many things he didn’t do. He has been in government, what has he done?”

“When you criticize him, he will frown and respond by asking why you said anything about him. What is he going to do there? He has tasted governance for four years. What did he do?” he added.

While Bullgod acknowledged that he respects Okraku-Mantey as a person, he believes that he is not fit to hold public office.

He criticized Okraku-Mantey’s tendency to respond defensively to criticism, arguing that this is not a quality that a good leader should possess.

“Someone like him, what is he going to tell his constituency? Also, he is lucky that it’s his constituency that he is going to because someone like him can never be president,” he shared.

I wish I can walk around naked like mad men do –WanlovtheKubolor

Wanlov the Kubolor

Ghanaian Artiste, Wanlov the Kubolor who walks barefooted and known for unusual fashion sense, has expressed desire to walk around naked, similar to some mentally challenged individuals.

In an interview with Ghanaweb, Wanlov said, “I am jealous of mad people. I’m like, why are you walking around naked and no one cares? People would stop caring if I did it right now, maybe if I did it for a long time.”

He, however, indicated he may not be lucky as the mentally challenged because the police will probably arrest him.

He even joked about needing enough money to pay a fine to the police in case he is arrested for public nudity.

“I think I need to have enough money in case I am arrested for public nudity. Until they realize that maybe I do have a mental problem, they won’t leave me alone,” he added.

Wanlov went further to suggest that he might have to fake a mental illness to avoid prosecution.

Additionally, Wanlov explained why he prefers wearing minimal clothing. He stated that the human body is like an air conditioning system that works by sweating, and when the breeze comes into contact with the sweat, it quickly cools the body down.

However, when someone wears clothes and the wind blows against the sweat-soaked clothes, the effect is not the same.
