Chinese spy balloon was able to transmit information back to Beijing

US sailors recover a suspected Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon that was downed by the United States over US territorial waters off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on February 5, 2023

The Chinese spy balloon that transited the US earlier this year was able to capture imagery and collect some signals intelligence from US military sites, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN.

The balloon was able to transmit information back to Beijing in real time, the source said, and the US government still does not know for sure whether the Chinese government could wipe the balloon’s data as it received it. That raises questions about whether there is intelligence the balloon was able to gather that the US still doesn’t know about.

Still, the intelligence community has not been overly concerned about the information the balloon was able to gather, the person said, because it is not much more sophisticated than what Chinese satellites are able to glean as they orbit over similar locations.

The US also knew what the balloon’s path would be and was able to protect sensitive sites and censor some signals before the balloon was able to pick them up, officials have said.

As CNN has reported, the US intelligence community last year developed a method of tracking what it says is a fleet of these Chinese balloons operating across the globe, controlled by the Chinese military.

The FBI is still examining the balloon, but so far officials have been able to glean additional information about how the device worked, including the algorithms used for the balloon’s software and how it is powered and designed.

CNN has reached out to the National Security Council at the White House and the Pentagon for comment. NBC was first to report on the new intelligence.

Philippines announces locations of 4 bases to be used by US army

Philippine and United States forces take part in a military exercise at a naval training base in San Antonio, Zambales province, the Philippines

One site is near the hotly disputed South China Sea and another not far from Taiwan.

Philippine Marines take their position during a mock beach assault along with their US counterparts as part of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT 2014) along the beach at a Philippine naval training base facing the South China Sea in San Antonio, Zambales province, north of Manila on June 30, 2014. Naval forces from the US and Philippines engaged in an amphibious landing on June 30 on Luzon island amid a tense territorial row with China.

The office of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has named the four additional bases that United States forces will have access to under an existing defence agreement to expand military cooperation.

The Philippine government announced in February that it would allow rotating batches of US forces to indefinitely stay in the new camps, in addition to five local bases earlier designated under a 2014 Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).

The locations of the additional bases, however, were withheld until Monday while the government consulted with local officials.

The Presidential Communications Office said in a statement that the four sites will be in Isabela and Cagayan, on the island of Luzon, facing north towards Taiwan, and on Palawan, near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.

The bases had been assessed by the Philippine military and deemed “suitable and mutually beneficial”, the statement said, noting that the camps would also be used for humanitarian and relief operations during disasters.

Darya Trepova: Russia releases tape of suspect in cafe killing of Vladlen Tatarsky

Darya Trepova declined to say who gave her the statuette but Russian authorities have blamed opposition figures

Russian investigators have detained a woman in the hunt for the killers of pro-war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky in a blast at a St Petersburg cafe.

In video released by authorities – most likely recorded under duress – Darya Trepova is heard admitting she handed over a statuette that later blew up.

But in the footage released, she does not say she knew there would be an explosion, nor admit any further role.

More than 30 people were wounded in the bombing in Russia’s second city.

Tatarsky had been attending a patriotic meeting with supporters in the cafe as a guest speaker.

A video circulating on social media showed a young woman in a brown coat apparently entering the cafe with a cardboard box.

Images showed the box being placed on a table in the cafe before the woman sat down. Another video showed a statue being handed to Tatarsky.

In a brief excerpt of her interrogation released by the ministry, Darya Trepova, 26, appeared under duress as she sighed repeatedly.

When her interrogator asked if she knew why she was detained, she replied: “I would say for being at the scene of Vladlen Tatarsky’s murder… I brought the statuette there which blew up.”

Asked who gave it to her she responded: “Can I tell you later please?”

Russia’s anti-terrorism committee alleged the attack was organised by Ukrainian special services “with people co-operating with” opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, which has released a series of exposes of corruption involving the Putin entourage, said it was “very convenient” for the Kremlin to blame its critics.

Mr Navalny has been in jail ever since he returned to Russia from Germany in January 2021. He survived a nerve agent attack in Russia in August 2020, which was blamed on Russian FSB security service agents.

Foundation head Ivan Zhdanov said everything pointed to FSB agents themselves. “Naturally we have nothing to do with this,” he said, adding that Russia needed an external enemy in the form of Ukraine and a domestic one in Navalny’s team.

Jindo Morishita

Accra Great Olympics’ Japanese attacker, Jindo Morishita, has opened up on his lack of game time under new coach, Bismark Kobi Mensah, in the ongoing Betpawa Premier League.

The 25-year-old joined the Dade Boys from Ebusua Dwarfs in the second transfer window, but has struggled to feature this season for the two-time premier league champion.

Speaking to Citi Sports in an exclusive interview, Jindo admits it is frustrating not to play but hopes his side, who are in precarious position, stays afloat this season.

“Well, you know as a player, you always want to deliver value on the pitch and if you are not given enough time, it is always frustrating.”

As I keep saying, it is not always about myself. It is about the team first so I respect the coach. I trust him and I am always preparing myself to be ready when called upon.

I always want to deliver a good performance in front of my Japanese family and the Olympic fans in general.”

Great Olympics secured a crucial victory against Berekum Chelsea on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium, ending their five-game winless streak in the league under Bismark Kobi Mensah

The pressure was on Olympics to deliver, having lost three and drawn twice in their previous five matches, and they rose to the occasion with an impressive performance.

Accra Great Olympics will next face league leaders Aduana FC in the match week 26 of the Betpawa premier league.

Afena-Gyan’s uncle asks FA to explain decision to drop player for World Cup

Felix Afena-Gyan

The uncle of Felix Afena-Gyan, a striker for Cremonese, has criticized the lack of communication surrounding his nephew’s omission from the Black Stars squad.

Abrefa Gyan stated that after the effort that went into persuading the 20-year-old to play for Ghana, he deserved better treatment.

“We’ve all heard how difficult it was for the FA to approach Afena-Gyan and persuade him,” the player’s uncle told Kumasi-based Pure FM, as quoted by 3sports.

“We also know Mourinho’s intention to shape the boy and why he wasn’t ready to play for the national team at the time, but the authorities did everything they could to entice him into the team.

“And, as everyone can attest, his performance was excellent [against Nigeria]. However, if you are a coach who isn’t good at dealing with issues in the locker room, the team will always have issues.”

Although Mourinho had intended to develop Afena-Gyan and he wasn’t initially ready to play for the national team, the authorities did their best to entice him to the team, and his performance against Nigeria was excellent.

An injured player and the vandalised bus

Head coach of Tamale City, Hamaza Mohammed, has hinted the club could go out seeking revenge, if the necessary authorities fail to ensure damage done on the club and its players are fixed.

Players of the club were brutalised by Aduana FC fans after a league game, where the league leaders picked up all three points with a 90 + 6 spot kick. Five Tamale City players sustained injuries – one, picking up a wounded eye – while their bus was also vandalised.

“We have lodged a complaint with the police [and] the authorities should take it up. If they do not take it up, we will advise ourselves. Once bitten, twice shy. At the end of the day, they will also come to Tamale and though we are professional and understand the rules of the game, we are more violent than them [Aduana] – they know that,” Hamza told JoySports.

Meanwhile, on the morning after the attacks by Aduana FC fans, the club posted a cryptic message on Twitter.

“If you think about me, you will get tired [you are only worrying yourself]. You won’t think about yourself but you’re always talking about me”.

Brighton boss worried about Tariq Lamptey’s injury

Tariq Lamptey

Brighton and Hove Albion manager, Roberto De Zerbi, has expressed concern about the injury situation of Ghana defender, Tariq Lamptey.

The 22-year-old has been out for a month now with what looked like a knee injury. He was expected to recover earlier than this and was seen in training 11 days after the injury, but it seems the injury has aggravated.

Speaking ahead of the Seagulls’ game against Bournemouth on Tuesday, De Zerbi said there will be clarity on Lamptey’s injury in the coming week.

“It’s a difficult situation, we will see in the next week [about Tariq]. To have some solution on the bench in the coming weeks is important,” he said.

“In the last game we finished with Solly March and Pascal Gross [in defence].” The Ghana Football Association (GFA) was optiimistic Tariq Lamptey will be fit for Ghana’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) doubleheader qualifying games against Angola, but that was not the case.

‘Difficult 24 hours’ after Graham Potter sacking –Interim Chelsea Coach

0
Graham Potter sacked

Chelsea interim head coach Bruno Saltor says it has been a “difficult 24 hours for all of us” after Graham Potter’s sacking.

Potter and assistant coach Billy Reid left the club on Sunday after only 31 games.

Bruno and Reid were part of Potter’s coaching staff at Brighton and joined Chelsea with him in September.

“It’s been really difficult, at every single level, especially emotionally,” said Bruno.

“You have to do the press conference, you have to deal with the players – it’s hard.

“My relationship with Graham and Billy, and how it affects families – it’s difficult to deal with that.

“It’s a sad day for the staff because Graham and Billy are two top coaches and top human beings.

“I have to be as professional as I can and try to help and guide the players. I’m just focusing on what I can control and going day by day.”

When Chelsea confirmed the changes, they issued a statement which said Potter has “agreed to collaborate with the club to facilitate a smooth transition”.

Asked what that means, former Brighton defender Bruno said: “It probably means that I’m here right now, trying to keep the process going. We’re just trying to collaborate as best we can.

“Graham did an amazing job. Football is a really complex business and we have to keep going.”

Potter was sacked with Chelsea 11th in the Premier League after Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat by Aston Villa.

They are 12 points off the top four with 10 games of the season remaining, beginning with Tuesday’s match at home to Liverpool.

England women’s team shorts to have ‘leak protection’ liner for players on their periods

England Women will no longer wear white shorts after concerns of competing while on their period

The English women’s football team are set to drop white shorts in favour of blue ones after players said they were concerned about blood leaking onto them if playing during their period.

The Lionesses will wear dark shorts for both their home and away kits at this summer’s World Cup, after discussions between the players, the FA and kit supplier Nike.

This has also led to the addition of a ‘leak protection’ liner – something that has been designed to help ease worries for players during performance while on their period.

The change to navy blue shorts is set to be made permanent, with the Lionesses set to wear the colour for the foreseeable future after members of their European Championship winning squad raised concerns last year.

It’s a move that mirrors changes made in other sports, such as tennis and rugby, to introduce non-white clothing so women are more at ease when playing during their period.

Ahead of Euro 2022, Beth Mead and Georgia Stanway raised the idea of changing the kit to make it more comfortable while on the pitch.
