John Fru Ndi, Cameroon’s brave champion of democracy

0
John Fru Nd

John Fru Ndi, the man regarded as Cameroon’s champion of democracy, has died at the age of 81.

He became a hero to many in the 1990s for his bravery at taking on the one-party state that brutally dealt with those challenging its rule.

A former bookseller and a great orator from the English-speaking area of Cameroon, he founded the opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF) in 1990.

His popularity led the regime to accept a multi-party system was inevitable.

In fact his party believed he won the 1992 presidential election, but the Supreme Court judge that heard its petition alleging fraud said his “hands were tied” – and let the official results granting victory to incumbent Paul Biya, with 40% of the vote, stand.

This caused great upset with SDF supporters and their leader was put under house arrest for three months in his home in the economic hub, Bamenda, and a state of emergency was declared.

Still the US must have given credence to his claim to the presidency, inviting him and his wife to the inauguration of Bill Clinton in January 1993.

Fru Ndi was not a supporter of the secessionist rebellion in Anglophone Cameroon that has claimed tens of thousands of lives over the last six years – and was even kidnapped and beaten up by militants in 2019, and part of his house was burnt down.

After Saudi Arabia, Iran may be patching up with its oldest Arab foe

0
Queen Farida and King Farouk of Egypt, Princess Fawzia and Crown Prince Mohammed Reza, and Queen Mother Nazli.

It was perhaps the first royal wedding of its stature to have been filmed in the Middle East.

The year was 1939, when Princess Fawzia of Egypt tied the knot with Iran’s Crown Prince Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, interlocking the royal households of two of the Middle East’s most prominent nations in a strategic alliance.

Thousands of people had gathered for the event at Cairo’s Abdine Palace, where the wedding was marked with fireworks and a parade showcasing the two nations’ civilizations.

Princess Fawzia was the eldest sister of King Farouk I – Egypt’s last monarch – and was just 17 years old when she married Pahlavi, who two years later ascended to the throne and became Shah of Iran. Fawzia filed for divorce in 1945, and the divorce was recognized by Tehran in 1948.

Forty years after the wedding, Pahlavi was overthrown in an Islamic revolution that changed the course of Iranian relations with Arab states, and sent Iranian-Egyptian ties in particular on a downward spiral from which the two nations have never emerged.

The feud became the longest between Iran and an Arab country in modern times. But it may soon be coming to an end.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last week publicly endorsed normalizing ties with Egypt, the most populous Arab country, saying that Iran “welcomes Egypt’s interest in restoring relations.”

“We have no problem in this regard,” he tweeted.

78 dead after boat with refugees and migrants sinks off Greece

0
Refugees and migrants arrive at the port of Kalamata, following a rescue operation, after their boat capsized at open sea, in Kalamata, Greece

At least 78 people have died and many more are feared missing after a fishing boat carrying refugees and migrants capsized and sank off the southern coast of Greece, in one of the worst such disasters this year.

The Greek coastguard said in a statement on Wednesday the vessel sank in international waters, 47 nautical miles (87km) southwest of Pylos, off the Peloponnese coast. The spot is close to one of the deepest areas of the Mediterranean.

The accident prompted an extensive rescue operation complicated by strong winds, the coastguard said, adding that about 100 people had been rescued so far. Six coastguard vessels, a navy frigate, a military transport and an air force helicopter, as well as several private vessels, were taking part in the search for those missing.

Four of the survivors were hospitalised in the port city of Kalamata with symptoms of hypothermia. Dozens of others were taken to sheltered areas in the city that were set up by the ambulance services and the United Nations Refugee Agency to receive dry clothes and medical attention.

None of those rescued had safety equipment such as life jackets, the coastguard said.

It was unclear how many passengers might still be in the water or trapped in the sunken vessel, but some initial reports suggested hundreds of people may have been on board.

Afghan migrants kidnapped and tortured on Iran-Turkey border

0
Hundreds of thousands have fled Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in August 2021

Afghans fleeing the Taliban are being kidnapped and tortured by gangs as they try to cross the border between Iran and Turkey on their way to Europe, a BBC investigation has found. The gangs then send videos of the abuse to the families of migrants being held hostage, demanding a ransom for their release.

Shackled together on a mountain-top with padlocks around their necks, a group of Afghan migrants beg for their release.

“Whoever watches this video, I was kidnapped yesterday, they are demanding $4,000 (£3,200) for each one of us. They beat us day and night non-stop,” says one man, with a bloodied lip, his face caked in dust.

Another video shows a group of men fully naked, crawling in the snow as someone whips them from behind.

“I have family, don’t do this to me; I have a wife and children, have mercy, please,” one man cries in another, shortly before he is filmed being sexually abused at knifepoint by one of the gangs.

These disturbing videos are evidence of a growing criminal enterprise, in which gangs in Iran kidnap mainly Afghan migrants trying to make their way to Europe.

The migration route from Afghanistan to Iran, then across the border into Turkey and onto the rest of Europe, has been used for decades. In fact, I took part of the same journey myself 12 years ago when fleeing Iran for the UK, where I was granted asylum.

But the route is now more dangerous than ever.

Those trying to cross from Iran into Turkey walk for hours over dry, mountainous terrain with no trees to provide shade, making it harder to avoid security forces who patrol the area.

Everything you need to know about a goiter

0
Goiter

FDA Drug safety recall warning

Certain brands and strengths of medication for hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) have been recalled. This is due to the medications having less active drug (levothyroxine) than they are supposed to.

Taking these tablets can lead to symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue, constipation, hair loss, and depression. Reduced effectiveness can be particularly dangerous for older people and those who are pregnant.

Call your pharmacist to find out if your medication has been recalled. Don’t stop taking the medication unless advised to do so by your healthcare provider.

A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland that causes swelling in the neck. There are various possible causes, but it can be a sign that the thyroid gland is producing too much or too little thyroid hormone. A person may notice tightness in the throat and difficulty swallowing.

A goiter is one of the most common thyroid disorders. It does not necessarily mean that the thyroid is functioning incorrectly. In some cases, however, it can signal an underlying thyroid disease that needs treatment.

Goiters are often harmless and may go away after a short time without treatment. People usually do not need treatment unless the goiter is large and causes bothersome symptoms.

Doctors can diagnose a goiter through a physical exam. They may also request blood tests or scans to find out the cause of the goiter.

What is a goiter?

A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland.

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland situated in front of the windpipe. It is responsible for producing and secreting hormones that regulate growth and metabolism.

Most cases of a goiter are categorized as “simple” goiters. These do not involve inflammation or any detriment to thyroid function, produce no symptoms, and often have no obvious cause.

Some people experience a small amount of swelling. Others can have considerable swelling that constricts the trachea and causes breathing problems.

An enlarged thyroid does not necessarily mean that the thyroid gland is working incorrectly. A person with a goiter may have a thyroid gland that is:

creating too much hormone, known as hyperthyroidism

creating too little hormone, known as hypothyroidism

creating the typical amount of hormone, known as euthyroidism

Goiters are more commonTrusted Source in females than males, especially after menopause. Goiters and thyroid disease are generally more common after the age of 40.

Symptoms

In most cases, the only symptomTrusted Source of a goiter is a swelling in the neck. The swelling may be large enough to feel with the hand.

The degree of swelling and the severity of symptoms produced by the goiter depend on the individual.

When other symptoms occur, the following are most common:

throat tightness, cough, and hoarseness

trouble swallowing

in severe cases, difficulty breathing

Other symptoms may be present because of the underlying cause of the goiter.

Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, can cause symptoms such as:

nervousness

palpitations

hyperactivity

increased sweating

heat hypersensitivity

fatigue

increased appetite

hair loss

weight loss

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, can cause symptoms such as:

an intolerance to the cold

constipation

forgetfulness

personality changes

hair loss

weight gain

Causes

There are a range of possible causes of a goiter, including:

Iodine deficiency

The most common cause of goiters outside the United States is a lack of iodine in the diet. The thyroid needs iodine to create thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism. A lack of iodine is uncommon in the U.S., as manufacturers add iodine to salt and other foods.

As iodine is less commonly found in plants, vegan diets may lack sufficient iodine. This is less of a problem for vegans who live in countries where manufacturers add iodine to salt.

Dietary iodine is found in:

seafood

plant foods grown in iodine-rich soil

cow’s milk

In some parts of the world, the prevalence of goiters can be as high as 80%. This includes remote mountainous areas of Southeast Asia, Latin America, and central Africa.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is the result of an underactive thyroid gland. When the gland produces too little thyroid hormone, it is stimulated to produce more, leading to swelling.

This usually results from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissue and causes inflammation of the thyroid gland.

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid gland, is another cause of goiters. In people with this condition, the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone.

This usually happens as a result of Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immunity turns on itself and attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to swell.

Other causes

Less common causes of goiters include the following:

Smoking: Thiocyanate in tobacco smoke interferes with iodine absorption and can cause enlargement of the thyroid gland.

Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, puberty, and menopause can affect thyroid function.

Thyroiditis: Inflammation caused by infection, for example, can lead to goiter.

Lithium: This psychiatric drug can interfere with thyroid function.

Too much iodine: This can trigger a swollen thyroid.

Radiation therapy: This also can trigger a swollen thyroid, particularly when administered to the neck.

Thyroid cancer: This is more commonTrusted Source in females.

People over the age of 40 are at greater risk of goiters, as are people with a family history of the condition.

Types

The type of goiter will dictate how it is treated and the possible symptoms. There are several main types of goiters:

Multinodular goiter: In this common condition, multiple nodules develop in the thyroid.

Diffuse smooth goiter: This occurs when the entire thyroid swells. These goiters are associated with overactive and underactive thyroid glands.

Retrosternal goiter: This type of goiter can grow behind the breastbone. This can constrict the windpipe, neck veins, or esophagus, and sometimes requires surgery.

Treatment

Most simple goiters are preventable through adequate intake of iodine, which is added to table salt in many countries. A range of iodine supplements are also available in health stores.

Medical professionals reserve active treatment of goiters for cases that cause symptoms. If the goiter is small and thyroid function is normal, people do not typically need treatment.

Hypothyroidism

In cases caused by an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, treatment is a synthetic replacement of thyroid hormone.

A doctor will gradually increase the dosage of synthetic thyroxine (T4) until their measurements indicate that the person’s normal thyroid function has been restored.

Hyperthyroidism

In goiters caused by an overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, treatment aims to counter the excess hormone production.

For instance, antithyroid drugs, such as thionamide drugs, gradually reduce excessive hormone levels.

Another option is radioactive iodine to decrease thyroid function and stop hormone production.

Goiter surgery

Doctors will reserve surgery to reduce the size of the swelling for cases where the goiter is causing troublesome symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Surgeons will usually perform thyroidectomies, the removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, when the person is under general anesthetic.

Feature: Respectfully, Nogokpo Togbuioo, please chill

0
Feature

It is all over in the media that the chiefs and traditional leaders in Nogokpo are at war with Bishop Agyinasare. The renowned man of God was alleged to have made a statement which angered the leaders and natives of this town, famously noted among a few other towns in Ghana, for traditional form of worshiping.

The story goes that Bishop Agyinasare made a remark that Nogokpo is the headquarters of demons.

This is what blew the storm into, the otherwise calm Anlo town along the Aflao road. Certainly, Nogokpo is legendary like Antoa in the Ashanti region and no one dares provoke these towns.

Like all lesser gods, the Nogokpo gods belong to the Rapid Results group which have no heart to forgive the wrong doer and will never give him a second chance. This attitude puts fear in indigenes who endeavour not to cross the paths of the gods.

Are such gods demonic? Some visionaries and very holy men and women who walk in the Lord God Almighty, were made to see things which only the chosen are to see. Some put their revelations on paper and informed the world about lesser gods.

According to the revelations about the fallen angels, when the rebellious angels were driven out of Heaven, some of them immediately regretted their ways and pleaded for forgiveness, but it was too late.

These repentant fallen angels were said to have taken shelter on earth and do works of charity as their form of penance, with the hope that on the final judgment, God will forgive them and invite them back to Heaven.

These fallen angels will do good to mankind and protect them from the evil ones who are known as the demons; Satan and the devils. They suffer attacks from the demons, because their strength and power, according to the revelations, are much lower than that of the other wicked rebel angels.

One would expect, that anybody who worships any of the lesser gods who are not demonic, will always get justice and mercy from them. However, all we hear, is that such gods are quick to punish the wrongdoer and dispatch him to eternal damnation in hell.

Torgbuioo, Christ is known for being just and merciful, and for this, traditionalists turn round to mock Him. The question is, are traditional gods just and merciful? A good example is of the Ewe gods in communities where fiashidi or trokosi are practiced.

This is where people found guilty of any offence are not punished; rather a young virgin girl is put into perpetual servitude in the shrines and made a sex slave to the gods for life. She will never see her family again. Now if after several years this sex slave dies, a replacement is taken from the family.

Another virgin, who was not born when that family member committed the offence is bundled against her wishes and thrown into the shrine to continue serving, for life, the punishment of a crime she never knew of. Torgbuioo, are these the gods one has to be proud of serving? Punishing the innocent but allowing the guilty to walk freely?

Yes, because of the harshness of such gods, there may be some orderliness with people endeavouring to do the right thing at all times. But in Christendom, social vices can be practiced freely without instant justice coming from God.

The reason is this. In Ezekiel 18: 23, God expressively stated that He does not take delight in the sinner’s death, but will want him to repent from his evil ways. Repentance is very important to God, because He does not want humans to languish in eternal damnation in hell fire.

That explains why sinners have a future and saints have a past. Many sinners who repented and turned to God Almighty, ended up suffering for the faith while drawing souls to Christ.

Matthew was a tax collector, who wrongfully took excess money from the poor to enrich himself. He obeyed the call of Jesus and became His apostle.

Dismas had a past as an armed robber. He saw salvation on the cross with Jesus next to him. He repented and entered into Paradise with Jesus that day. Dismas gives us the example that whenever we get the least opportunity, we must repent and follow Jesus. And that least opportunity is Now.

Saul Paul was persecuting innocent ones until he encountered the Light. He repented and become a Christian, put his life on the line and drew souls to Christ.

Christianity gives everyone the opportunity to turn their lives round and follow the path of righteousness to salvation. You do not wish hell damnation, even to your worse enemy.

Do Christians believe that only Christians will make it to Heaven? As much as some do, the answer to this question is ‘No.’ According to the first Christian Church, the Catholic Church, which respects all religions, every human is a child of God and the Church rejects nothing that is true and holy in other religions.

Catholics, believe that Christians cannot truly pray to God the Father if they treat any person in ways other than brotherly love. (Ref: Vatican II, Nostra Aetate, October 28, 1965).

According to the Catholic Church, in every religion, the Truthcan be found. And when followed in spirit and in truth, salvation will be won by that soul, even though he or she may not be Christian.

And that Truth is found in Jesus Christ who is the Truth, the Way and the Life. So, the Catholic Church gives respect to other Christian denominations and other religions who can also make it to Heaven.

Having stated the above, it is right to say that Christianity and other religions can lead people to Heaven. On His Judgment Throne, God will judge each soul according to the Truth in his or her religion.

I will therefore want to humbly state here that the Togbuioo of Nogokpo should not to seek to interpret Bishop Agyinasare’s statement as an attack on the people of Nogokpo. The bishop never mentioned that the indigenes from there are demons but only said that town is the headquarters of demons.

Well, what did Jesus Christ say about the world? When the statement is made about things of the world, it means the desires of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life (1 John 2:15). And about two times Christ designated Satan as the prince or ruler of this world (John 12:31 and John 14:30).

The Bible is clear that either the world’s inhabitants are under the influence of this world with its cunning, deception, spellways and always in opposition and contradiction to all that is Godly; or they are in Christ and under the direction of the Spirit of God. There is no neutral ground.

If Togbuioo, take it that by Bishop Agyinasare statement he meant all people of Nogokpo are demons, then by Jesus’ own statement every human is a demon, because the world is Satan’s kingdom.

Togbuioo cannot deny knowledge of the fact some Akan towns in this country are degraded as citadels of witchcraft and others as places where evil money rituals, sika duro, are engaged in. Ewes look down upon people from this ethnic group or most importantly, such towns which to them, must be avoided at all cost.

To this day, such towns have been labelled for all that is evil and wrong, yet to this day, no traditional leader from these towns has cautioned people from making such statements.

Togbuioo, please just chill and refrain from daring Christ in this matter. You cannot fight Christ. There are many instances in history where people who dared Christ met fatal ends. One of such happened on October 7, 1571 in what is called the Battle of Lepanto.

That was when the mighty fleet of the Islamic Ottoman Empire, with larger, better equipped and faster naval vessels, were crushed in an astonishing defeat by the smaller and ill-equipped naval vessels of the Holy League, which were completely outnumbered. To this day, no one can explain how this happened, except to attribute this to Christ.

Besides, have Togbuioo considered the repercussions that will follow when traditional worshippers clash with Christians in this country? In such a clash, Ghana will be the loser.

Calling upon your gods will not help matters but rather put Ewes in a bad light. Togbuioo, why is it that once a statement is made against Ewes, it is a reason to go to war? Akans, especially have always been on the receiving end andare mostly always attacked. Rawlings in 1979 made an Asante chief to carry night-soil for no reason.

In 1999, Rawlings, disrespectfully talked harshly to the Asantehene and poked his fingers into the king’s face for something the Otumfuo knew nothing of. In all these Asantes never reacted.

But when the Aflao chief gave ultimatum to President Akufo-Addo to complete a school block in Aflao and the president who knew the work was almost completed responded by saying the chief could complete it by himself, some Ewes took offence.

The other day, on the Facebook page, Ewe Radio Germany, Akans were accused for allegedly saying that any Ewe who could not speak Akan, Ga or Guan is not a Ghanaian. And the author warned of war. Meanwhile, only a few years ago, a group of Ewes declared they are not Ghanaians and have never been.

They wanted their independence, saying they are now from Western Togoland. And they were ready to go to war and die for independence. So, who are saying Ewes are not Ghanaians?

Togbuioo, once again, may I humbly and respectfully appeal to you to let go? Because Bishop Agyinasare never said Nogokpo indigenes are demonic. Any attack on the bishop and his church in particular and Christians in general, could break up Nogokpo in particular and Ewes in general, because as you know there are many faithful followers of Christ who are Ewes.

Feature: Remembering Nana Akyin VI, one-time ‘Vice-President’ of Ghana

0
The four late chiefs

William Shakespeare, undoubtedly, the greatest playwright that ever walked on this earth, wrote in Act II, Scene Five of his love-play, Twelfth Night: “Some are born great. Others achieve greatness. Some have greatness bestowed on them.”

All three could be said of Nana Akyin VI, Omanhen of the Ekumfi Traditional Area, who passed away nearly four decades ago and still remains relevant to the socio-political evolution of this country. Nana was born nobility into the Royal Asona Clan of Ekumfi.

He rose to become the Paramount Chief of the traditional area, worked his way to become the President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs for fourteen solid years and had the Chairmanship of the Presidential Commission of this country thrust upon him by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, first Head of State of the newly independent nation of Ghana.

For the uninitiated, the Chairmanship of the Presidential Commission was akin to Vice President or Prime Minister in today’s political dispensation.

It tells much about the greatness of the late Omanhen of the Ekumfi Traditional Area that nearly forty years after joining his ancestors, Nana Akyin VI still remains relevant to the socio-political evolution of the people he left behind in Ekumfi, and to the entire nation.

Under the leadership of his nephew, born Kwesi Asmah, who has now stepped into the big shoes Nana Akyin VIl left behind as the new head of the traditional area answering to the title Odeefo Ayin VIII, together with his traditional leaders, has set aside the whole of the month of June to remember the man whose mantra was ‘Ye Adze Ma Wombo Wodzin (Do something for people to glorify your name.)

From Friday, June 9 to Sunday, June 18, the royal palace at Ebiram, the traditional headquarters of the Ekumfi State, will vibrate with Fontomfrom, Apinstin, Kete and Asafo songs and dance in remembrance of the late Nana Akyin VI, his immediate successor, Nana Akyin VII, and two Queenmothers, Nana Benyiwa IV, and Nana Benyiwa V, who are already in the spirit world.

It is billed as a great remembrance ceremony. But it is also a huge homecoming event for all Ekumfi citizens living outside the traditional area.

The sounding of Omanhen’s appellation, ‘Suro Koko… Nkrofo No Suro Koko’, together with Atumpan, Kete and Asafo sounds are indications that something of huge significance to the traditional area is happening.

Under the arrangement, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is likely to grace the occasion, which is under the auspices of the National House of Chiefs. Consequently, the President of the House, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, will preside over the funeral ceremony with Odeefo Amoakwa Buadu VIII, Omanhen of the Breman Asikuma Traditional Area, who is also the President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs.

The Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, my good friend Stephen Asamoah Boateng, is the Special Guest of Honour. The guests list of Ekumfi citizens making their way to Ebiram for the commemoration is tall.

There is Mr. Joe Ghartey, presidential-hopeful in the New Patriotic Party primary and immediate past Minister for Railways Development, Mr. Affail Monney, former President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Mr. Kofi Yamoah, just retired Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Stock Exchange, Mr. Francis Ato Cudjoe, former Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aqua Culture, Mr. Abeeku Crentsil, Member of Parliament for Ekumfi, Mr. Joe Biney, Proprietor of Fridays, a popular entertainment spot at Sakumono in the Tema West District of Greater Accra, Chief Biney, a leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, and as a host of media personnel.

The programme begun on Friday, June 9, with clean-up activities in all the 53 towns and villages in the traditional area. The main programme, on Saturday, June 10, with the pouring of libation by Akyeamehen Kwame Mentawoho. Odeefo Akyin VIII sat in state with his Queenmother, Nana Benyiwa VI, and all chiefs and traditional leaders in Ekumfi.

All towns and villages in the Ekumfi State are programmed to take turns to perform various Asafo songs and dance throughout the commemorative period..

The event reaches its climax on Saturday, June 17, with all invited guests, including the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, my good friend Stephen Asamoah Boateng, joining a tall list of invitees to mourn Nana Akyin VI, Akyin VII, Queenmothers Nana Benyiwa IV and V, as well as two Ebusuampayin, Nana Dadzie II and Nana Dadzie III.

There is a lot about Nana Akyin VI especially, that ought to be recounted and celebrated. When he was enstooled, just before the independence of Ghana in 1957, he faced stiff opposition from other royal contestants from the coastal belt of the Ekumfi Traditional Area.

He fled the royal palace at Ebiram and found a new home at Ekumfi Ekrawfo.

Growing up as a child, I remember waking up each morning to be greeted by a fleet of vehicles virtually taking over the main street in town, with their occupants singing and dancing to war songs.

Apparently, they were looking to capture Nana Akyin VI and remove him from the Stool. But the elders of Ekrawfo, including my father, were smarter. Every dawn they would take the new Chief to an ancestral grove called Obutu, which had a canopy of trees covering the source of a stream.

The search and destroy operation went on for quite a while until the advent of politics, leading to independence for the then Gold Coast in 1957. Nana Akyin joined the Convention People’s Party (CPP) of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and became a powerful advocate.

Eventually his pursuers chickened out. The CPP rewarded him by making him play key roles in the evolution of the new independent nation.  For 14 years, from 1959 until 1973, the traditional head of Ekumfi was the President of the Central Region House of Chiefs.

The real deal was when the first President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, inducted him into office as the Chairman of the three-chiefs Presidential Commission.

Anytime the President left the country, and his trips were many at the time of the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (now African Union) and the Non-Aligned Movement, Nana Akyin VII and his Commission ruled the country.

The Ekumfi Overlord was the de facto Vice-President. Throughout the First Republican experiment until the coup d’état of 24 February 1966, the President of Ghana had no Prime Minister.

It is this man of history and politics that the Ekumfi Traditional Area are remembering in this grand funeral which begun on Friday, June 9. The event reaches its climax on Saturday June 17, with a grand durbar at the Ekumfi Royal Palace.

One interesting fact about the Ekumfi Royal Palace is that it has room for all the divisional chiefs in the traditional area. When proceedings are prolonged and there is need to continue the next day, all chiefs partaking in the proceedings need not leave. There is accommodation for each and every one of them.

The Ekumfi District, which forms the traditional area, comprises of 276 square kilometres, lying exactly at the centre of the coastal area of the Central Region. Essarkyir is the headquarters of the district.

The district used to be part of the Mfantsiman Municipality until it was split from the municipality on June 28, 2012. Officially, it has a population of 56,741, but with the entire workforce living and earning their living outside the district, the real population could be in the hundreds of thousands.

Geographically, the Ekumfi District is bounded to the east by the Gomoa West District, to the West by the Mfanstiman Municipality, and to the North by the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District. The Gulf of Guinea is the main border to the South.

Today’s UEFA Nations League semi-finals

0
Italy players in flight

SpainItaly to settle old scores

For the second time in two years, Spain and Italy meet in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals, as the European heavyweights clash in Enschede on Thursday evening.

La Roja emerged winners back in 2021, before then falling to France in the final. On this occasion, the victor will progress to meet either the Netherlands or Croatia in Sunday’s decider.

A tumultuous 12 months for Spain began this time last year with two draws and two wins to start their Nations League campaign, and though they then lost their first September fixture to Switzerland, subsequent events in Braga saw them seal a place in the final four.

However, defeat in Switzerland was Spain’s first at home since 2018 and offered the first signs that Luis Enrique‘s time in charge could be curtailed.

After an unimpressive World Cup campaign in Qatar, the ex-Barcelona boss was replaced by former Under-19 and Under-21 coach Luis de la Fuente.

The latter’s start to life in the Spanish hotseat did not go altogether smoothly, as qualifying for Euro 2024 kicked off with victory over Norway before a deserved defeat in Scotland highlighted old failings.

Once again, La Roja encounter an Azzurri obstacle in the Nations League semis, having ended Italy’s world-record 37-match unbeaten streak back in 2021, to gain passage to the final. However, they then fell at the final hurdle.

Indeed, Spain and Italy are no strangers to each other, as Roberto Mancini‘s men also edged out their Mediterranean neighbours en route to European Championship glory in the summer of 2021.

With both teams searching for certainty amid fluctuating results, their respective coaches could take a more cautious approach – particularly at the end of a long, hard season.

Several Italy players were in action until the bitter end of a tough 2022-23 campaign, so they may pay the price for such fatigue against a Spain side who enjoy making opponents work for even a slim share of the ball.

Antonio Conte accuses Tottenham of lacking ambition

Antonio Conte has fired a poorly-disguised shot at his old club Tottenham, accusing the north London club of lacking ambition.

The Italian manager, who left Spurs by mutual consent after publicly criticising his players during an explosive tirade in March, claims the club ‘decided to settle for less’ by letting him go.

Antonio Conte

After Conte’s exit, Tottenham slipped out of the Champions League places and continued sliding down the Premier League table, failing to qualify for Europe altogether with an eighth-place finish.

Cristian Stellini took over from Conte as interim boss following the 53-year-old’s departure before being replaced by Ryan Mason, who has now passed the baton over to new permanent head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Conte made an instant impact after arriving in north London, taking Spurs from just inside the top half to the Champions League, and was keen to highlight how the club have regressed once again since his exit.

‘When I arrived, the team was in eighth or ninth place, yet we qualified for the Champions League,’ Conte said at an awards ceremony in Arezzo on Tuesday. ‘Then this season, with the side in fourth position, I decided we should part ways with Tottenham. Some had decided to settle for less.

‘The last experience, like all of them really, had some things that were positive and some less so. The experience was wonderful, we did the maximum possible and gave all that we had.’

Urging that he still has the hunger to carry on in management, the current free agent added: ‘I still have the desire to coach, that passion never goes. If it did, I would have to look inside myself and think that it was no longer right to continue doing this profession.

‘Having said that, I am also not spasmodically searching for a new job. If something important and serious came along, that gave me motivation, then I would give it consideration, in Italy or abroad.’

Premier League transfer window opens; Arsenal push for Rice, Mount linked to United, Harry Kane undecided

The 2023-24 Premier League summer window is officially open, with clubs looking to add to their respective squads ahead of the upcoming season.

Last year saw the Premier League set a new spending record of £1.9billion. This summer could see clubs in England surpass the whopping sum.

The new season is set to kick off on the weekend of August 12/13. It is likely that the first fixture is held on Friday, August 11.

This summer’s window will run until Friday, September 1 and is set to close at 11pm.

With the summer transfer window officially open, which big players could be on the move? Mail Sport provides the answers below.

Declan Rice

One of the biggest deals of the summer could see Declan Rice join Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Mail Sport reported last week that the Gunners are ready to table £90million bid for the West Ham star but face paying the West Ham skipper’s full transfer fee inside two years. The Hammers want the guaranteed portion of Rice’s transfer fee paid by next summer.

Mason Mount

Chelsea’s Mason Mount could be another player on the move this summer, with Manchester United looking to strengthen their midfield.

The Red Devils are reportedly set to table a £50m offer to sign the Englishman, but is valued at around £85m by Chelsea.

With Mount’s current deal set to expire next year, both the player and Chelsea are no closer to agreeing a new contract.

Harry Kane

Tottenham’s Harry Kane is another who could be on the move this summer. Speculation continues to surround Kane’s future at Tottenham after the club missed out on European football following a dismal season that ended in an eighth place finish in the Premier League.

Moises Caicedo

Brighton’s Moises Caicedo has attracted attention from several top clubs across England following his season with the Seagulls.

After missing out on Manuel Ugarte, who has recently signed for Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea are eyeing Caicedo – who is valued at around £80m.

With Chelsea in for Caicedo, the Seagulls are interested in defender Levi Colwill.

Federico Valverde

Liverpool have reportedly had a £51m bid for Real Madrid star man Federico Valverde rejected.

Valverde is one of Madrid’s most valuable players after his impressive campaign with Los Blancos.

The Reds are wanting to improve their midfield and have reportedly made Valverde a transfer target after already bringing in Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has taken a swipe at former President Mahama saying that ‘Dumsor’ is his bona fide record, which no government would take from him.

According to the President, considering the investments made by his government in the power sector, Ghana will not return to the days of the power crisis, which lasted about four years under the Mahama administration.

“I want to reassure you all that my government will continue to work towards keeping the lights on, in spite of the global dynamics of energy pricing, because the alternative is not an option. We are not going back to ‘Dumsor’, we leave that to President Mahama,” Nana said.

President Akufo-Addo said this on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 on the Graphic Road in Accra, where he commissioned the 161 kilovolt GRIDCo ECG Bulk Power Supply Point (BSP).

The $40 million facility was constructed under the Project for the Reinforcement of Power Supply to Accra Central.

IMPORTANCE

According to the President, the new facility would enhance the capacity of the Accra Central Business District, as its power needs have important implications for the economy.

It has been projected that the electricity demand rate of residents and commercial establishments operating within Accra Central and its environs stand at 10% per annum.

In addition, power demand in Greater Accra is projected to reach about 1,000 megavolt-amperes (MVA), with an average annual growth rate of some eight percent (8%).

However, the project guarantees a stable, reliable and regular supply of electricity for the busy and bustling Accra Central Business District and surrounding areas.

The Accra Central Bulk Supply Point

The President said that the Accra Central BSP project was consistent with the nation’s power needs and development, with a GDP growth rate of up to fifteen percent (15%) around the time of project preparation.

THE FACILITY

The bulk supply point is a gas-insulated sub-station, which is GRIDCo’s first sub-station with such technology. This is an innovation in technology applied in areas where spaces are significantly limited, so large-capacity switchgear and transformers, which are compact, can be installed.

The benefits of the Accra Central Bulk Supply Point, among many others, are to reduce transmission and distribution losses, ensure high reliability of electricity supply and ensure a high level of personnel safety.

With the operationalisation of the Accra Central BSP, power voltages have become stable (protecting valuable equipment), power supply reliability has improved, and with this efficiency has been restored, reducing system losses as required by the regulator, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

GRANT

The Accra Central BSP project was constructed through a grant from the Japanese government and its external agency, the Japanese International Development Agency (JICA), without Japanese technology or technical assistance.

President Akufo-Addo extended his deep appreciation to the Japanese government and the other partners for their efforts, continuous support, and contribution to Ghana’s development and growth.

He described the project as an illustration of the strong cooperation that links Ghana and Japan, “which we cherish very much.”

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) provided access to part of the compound of its Primary Substation E, which facilitated the construction of the Accra Central BSP.

STRONG PILLAR

The Minister for Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, opined that the government had resolved to deal with the power crisis and has constructed such BSPs in Pokuase, Kasoa and other places.

He mentioned further that such facilities were a strong pillar of the President’s assurance that there would be no power crisis in the country again.

He observed that his ministry was focused on keeping the lights on and ensuring that under the tenure of the President, “there will be no fuel shortage and dumsor will be a thing of the history books of this country.”

The Board Chairman of GRIDCo, Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere remarked that the facility was the 4th major sub-station of GRIDCo to be commissioned by President Akufo-Addo and his Vice in the last 18 months.

The country representative for JICA, Miss Suzui Momoko, said the project would provide stable power supply to the beneficiary environs.

She emphasised that the Accra Central BSP is the largest, with the first gas insulator switch gears and the first 161 kV underground cables in Ghana.

She added that the project has noise, flood control, and fire resistance mechanisms “to ensure maximum effect for the residents and businesses in the area.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Alan Kyerematen, says he will partner the private sector to fund infrastructural development in the country.

According to the former Minister for Trade and Industry, the new policy will ease the burden on the central government to always look for funds to tackle infrastructure, which is capital intensive.

Mr Alan Kyerematen made this known in a stakeholder engagement with some business owners in the private sector in Accra yesterday.

It was under the theme: ‘Building a Strategic Partnership between Government and the Private Sector for Progress and Prosperity through the Great Transformational Plan (GTP).”

Mr. Kyerematen also told his guests that some components of the GTP would tackle inflation and ensure a stable currency among others. He promised to actively promote export diversification and value-addition and import substitution programmes under the industrial transformational agenda, as well as increase financing to SMEs when he eventually becomes president.
