Feature: Re: Respectfully, Nogokpo Togbuioo, please chill!

The above headline, under the authorship of a Mr. Daniel Dugan in his column, ‘Commonsense,’ published on 15 June, 2023, was at sharp variance with the contents and analyses he did about the unfortunate raging feud between Bishop Agyinasare and the people of Nogokpo.

Until you read the article, you wouldn’t know how improperly loaded it was against the entire Ewe (Eʋe) tribe.

In the face of the explosive controversy stoked by Bishop Charles Agyinasare of the Perez Chapel International that Nogokpo is the headquarters all demons in Ghana, with two reputable bodies reportedly seeking to intervene, I thought the write-up was to reconstruct the broken bridge between the Bishop and the natives of Nogokpo Township.

But, the ill-fated grudge seems to have offered Dugan a slippery opportunity to descend on us, Eʋes, without provocation.

I almost immediately grabbed my phone, after reading it, to send my thoughts without allowing myself to be carried along the undesirable route he chose to pitch Eʋes against Ashantis, two great allies under the influences of his Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Awomefia, Torgbui Sri III.

To begin with, Dugan and his ilk must understand that Nogokpo is a township, different from the deity, which seems to be synonymous with the township just like Antoa in the Ashanti Region.

Dugan, who thinks that the good people of Nogokpo do not have a case, rather contradicted himself when he wrote: ‘So, the Catholic Church gives respect to other Christian denominations and other religions who can make it to heaven.’

By this, the Catholic Church is admonishing adherents of all religions to accord one another due respect without denigrating any religion.

Ghana’s 1992 constitution, chapter five, 26 (1)grants us freedom of worship, meaning everyone has the liberty to subscribe to any religion insofar as it does not infringe on any other person’s rights.

But was that the understanding of the bishop? As far as he is concerned, non- Christians don’t deserve human dignity hence his labeling of a whole township as bastion of ‘demons.’

‘International’ as his church is, l would have expected him to have ordered those countries that do not allow the establishment of a church, to rescind their decisions.

Christmas and Easter are not allowed to be celebrated in a number of countries; the people believe in other religions.

The utterances of some Christian leaders pose the greatest danger to the stability of this country. Dugan said that if Togbuioo (what did he mean by this spelling?

And he did not bother to find out) take it that by Bishop Agyinasare’s statement he meant all people of Nogokpo are demons, then by Jesus’ own statement, every human is a demon because the world is Satan’s kingdom.

Dugan is suggesting that everyone in the world is a Christian and it did not matter how bishop Agyinasare labeled non- Christians.

Perhaps, both the Bishop and Dugan were not abreast of how seemingly harmless comment seven led to fighting and loss of lives elsewhere. South Sudan broke away due to religious hegemony by The Sudan.

And Dugan descended on all Ewes. ‘Togbuioo cannot deny knowledge of the fact that some Akan towns in this country are degraded as citadel of witchcraft and others as sika duro are engaged in.

Ewes look down upon people from this ethnic group or most importantly, such towns which to them, must be avoided at all costs.

To this day, such towns have been labeled for all that is evil and wrong, yet to this day, no traditional leader from these towns has cautioned people from making such statements.

How on earth could a writer lump all Ewes together and make such a sweeping statement devoid of evidence? Did Dugan ever hear me make such a statement?

He would have done readers of his article some good if he had made available his research findings, which revealed that Ewes look down upon ‘witchcraft tribes.’

When did he conduct this research, sample size, methodology, margin of error, etc. to draw that conclusion?

You see, it is this kind of stereotyping that’s tearing our dear country apart. For his education, he should have said ‘some’ Ewes, instead of putting us all into one basket and whitewashing us.

He further said: ‘ Togbuioo, please just chill and refrain from daring Christ in this matter.’

If it’s the understanding of Dugan that by the people of Nogokpo expressing their anger at the comments by Bishop Charles Agyinasare, they are fighting Christ, then he got it all wrong.

Dugan should read Mathew 22; 21 and refrain from the selective deduction and interpretation.

As far as he and bishop are concerned, the admonition by the Catholic Church that respect must be given to other religions is out-of-place.

There are equally men of God at Nogokpo Township who deserve the title of Bishop, who are also livid at the framing by Agyinasare.

Dugan should know that the president of African Clergy Council, Bishop Dr. Fred Akakpo, was quoted by the Ghanaweb as describing the comment as totally defamatory.

‘The statement the archbishop made is totally defamatory. It implies that the people are possessed including the Christians living among them. He did not attack the deity of the town or invoke the wrath of the deity but rather the community.

His statement can give birth to a serious tribal or religious conflict leading to loss of lives and property,’ said bishop Akakpo.

Dugan failed to appreciate the enormity of the comment of bishop Agyinasare and asked if Togbuioo considered the repercussions that would follow when traditional worshipers clashed with Christians in this country?

What an inexcusable question? If he anticipated danger from the comment, would that not be the compelling reason why he should have called for a truce and coaxed bishop Agyinasare to review his obstinate stance?

It is the ilk of Dugan who are poking the fire set by the bishop, instead of using their platforms to preach peace, unity, and tolerance of other’s faiths for the development of our country.

‘Calling on your gods will not help matters but rather put Ewes in a bad light,’ Duncan warned. He cannot claim to be unaware of these popular deities; Akonedi/Tigari at Akwapim Larteh, Esio Koffi around Prestea, Nana Borbo Ayisi (Nzema Island),  Nana Brawula, Nana Eluku Tayiba, all in the Nzema area, Techiman- Buokyerewa, Nsuatre-Buotwene, Apape, Antoa Nyame etc.

Did you ever you hear any pastor describe the towns, where these gods are, as the headquarters of demons?

In any case, are gods not visibly mounted on some streets in the area where his church is headquartered?

Why did the bishop not condemn the indigenes? ‘Togbuioo,’ Dugan proceeded, ‘why is it that once a statement is made against Ewes, it is a reason to go to war?’

Oh, so, Dugan finds it acceptable that when an individual steps on someone’s toes, his entire ethnic group must take the flack? You see the tribal dominion he is projecting?

I want to refer Dugan to just one incident; a seasoned journalist was declared persona non grata in a Region other than Volta for his comments deemed debasing.

I must, perhaps, refer Dugan to these two books, written just last year; History of Ghana Text Book 3, and Golden English Base, by Nana Badu Nkansah, Nelly Martison Anim, and Okyre Baafi Alexander, respectively, to see how Ewes were maligned and framed in books meant to be learnt by pupils; you may then feel the pain in our shoes.

And Dugan veered into the arena of partisan politics. But as l said, l will not follow him there. One would have thought that Dugan would stop there, but no.

He gleaned some ‘distasteful’ comments from the Facebook to justify his unwarranted attacks on innocent Ewes. Oh, Dugan, you have hit us far below the belt, but I leave you to your conscience.

I find it difficult to understand how herculean a task the Bishop sees it to say sorry on any platform to the peace-loving  people of Nogokpo, his ‘in-laws,’ for berating them, having now realised that the deity is different from the Township.

That will not be condescending at all. Do we not apologise to our wives whenever they accuse us of delinquency, which might not be factual, but just for the sake of harmony? It’s a mark of humility to say sorry.

What understanding will his congregation have of his sermons on humility with this precedent? Bishop may win the ‘battle’ today, but he should consider the future of his ministry and the legacy he will bequeath to others.

It is my humble submission that, he establishes a public relations unit for his global church to be handling such issues, instead of living them with the likes of Daniel Dugan, who is discouraging me from continuing to read his column. We must peace ambassadors and not ‘armageddonians.’

Nearly every news story or article that appears online attracts all kinds of comments from readers who have wide-ranging objectives. Why should these give Dugan a headache?

Was he doing a phenomenology? And now, see his conclusion: ‘Togbuioo, once again, may I humbly and respectfully appeal to you to let go?

Because Bishop Agyinasare never said Nogokpo indigenes are demonic.

Any attack on the bishop and his church in particular and Christians in general, could break up Nogokpo in particular and Ewes in general, because as you know there are many faithful followers of Christ who are Ewes.’

This your article is woefully short of an appeal and utterly lacked respect to Torgbuiwo, as it was a threat and contradictory in some respects.

Dugan, talk to a cross section of the flock of Perez Chapel International and see how many non- Ewes who will strongly disagree with their bishop on this matter.

Guardiola: City won’t move for Mbappe, everyone knows where he wants to go

Pep Guardiola and Kylian Mbappe

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Manchester City are not willing to make a move for Kylian Mbappe, whose contract with Paris Saint-Germain runs until the end of next season.

The Catalan coach claimed that Mbappe has already made up his mind regarding his next team amidst interest from Real Madrid.

“[Manchester City] will not make a move for Mbappe, everyone knows where he wants to go,” Guardiola noted.

The Sky Blues coach went on to congratulate the Spanish national team after La Roja won the Nations League on Sunday night.

“I watched the Barcelona basketball game and then had dinner. I didn’t watch [Spain],” he noted.

“But I know about the result. I congratulate the national team. Winning a tournament is always very difficult.

“They didn’t mention Luis Enrique, who took them to the final. I missed a comment about Luis Enrique. Winning is very important. Congratulations to the coach and all the players. Many, many, many congratulations.”

The former Barcelona coach does not believe that the club’s president Joan Laporta will approach him to make a comeback soon.

“I don’t think he will ask me to come back,” Guardiola noted.

“We see each other once a year. He joined [for dinner] by coincidence. I was going to have dinner with Xavier Sala i Martin and my son.

“He had nowhere to dine and we did it together. I am a member and I hope that with the new Camp Nou they will keep my place. Barcelona has a great coach.

“[Xavi] has won the league. Hopefully he will be here for many years, and when he decides that his time is over, [Sergio] Busquets or another coach will come in.”

PSG close to appointing former Spain manager as new boss

Luis Enrique

French champions Paris St-Germain are close to appointing Luis Enrique as their new manager.

PSG have not yet confirmed the exit of boss Christophe Galtier, but it is widely assumed his spell at the club will come to an end this summer.

Galtier, 56, was appointed as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor in July 2022 but fell short of expectations.

Luis Enrique has been linked with numerous jobs since leaving Spain after the World Cup in Qatar.

PSG turned to the 53-year-old after talks with former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann ended without agreement.

Luis Enrique made his name as a player with Barcelona before becoming head coach at the Nou Camp between 2014 and 2017.

PSG are intent on resetting the club and trying to build a team rather than continuing the policy of signing a collection of expensive high-profile players, which has so far failed to deliver the Champions League success demanded by the club’s Qatari owners.

Galtier made a strong start to life in the French capital, avoiding defeat in 22 games across all competitions, and PSG sat five points clear at the top of Ligue 1 when the season paused for the World Cup.

However, they lost nine times after club football resumed and limped over the line to finish just a point clear of Lens in the league, while exiting the Champions League in the last 16 to Bayern.

Dutch forward sentenced to 18 months in jail for assault

Quincy Promes has won 50 caps for the Netherlands

Former Netherlands striker Quincy Promes has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for stabbing his cousin in the knee.

The incident took place at a family party in July 2020 and the Spartak Moscow forward was found guilty of assault by a Dutch court.

His lawyer says he will appeal, according to Dutch broadcaster RTL.

Promes, who has also played for Sevilla and Ajax, lives in Russia and did not attend the court hearing.

The 31-year-old was also charged by Dutch prosecutors last month for his alleged involvement in drugs trafficking.

Quincy Anton Promes (born 4 January 1992) is a Dutch professional footballer who plays as a forward or attacking midfielder for Russian Premier League club Spartak Moscow. He used to represent the Netherlands national team at the international level.

Promes started his career with Twente in 2011 where he spent three seasons before moving to Russian club Spartak Moscow in the summer of 2014. That year he also won his first senior cap for the Netherlands in March 2014, in a 2–0 friendly defeat against France. Promes won his first major honour in 2017 as Spartak were crowned Russian Premier League (RPL) champions.

Courtois’ team-mates question if his Belgium no show is linked to his marriage

Courtois and girlfriend

Thibaut Courtois’ bizarre no-show to Belgium training on Sunday has taken another twist after new reports claimed that his team-mates are questioning whether the behaviour is linked to his marriage next week.

An earlier report on Monday claimed that a furious Courtois failed to report for Belgium duty on Sunday after Romelu Lukaku was named captain ahead of him for the draw with Austria.

In the absence of usual skipper Kevin De Bruyne, Lukaku led the Red Devils out on Saturday with Courtois passed over for the role in a pre-planned move by manager Domenico Tedesco. Instead, the goalkeeper was set to be captain against Estonia.

However, Courtois took exception to the decision and was not present when the squad gathered at their hotel to begin preparations for their next Euro 2024 qualifier, according to Het Nieuwsblad, which he now looks set to miss.

But now the same Dutch news outlet have released more details on the saga, which claimed Courtois was unable to be talked around in a late-night phone call – which lasted until 4am – by Tedesco, and that his team-mates believe his marriage next week could be playing a part in his walk-out.

Courtois is due to marry his fiancée, Israeli supermodel Mishel Gerzig, in the south of France next week in what will be a two-day party with more than 300 guests set to attend his special day.

Het Nieuwsblad are reporting that the Real Madrid goalkeeper was given extra time off last Monday to arrange something for his wedding.

The Belgium players were also given Sunday morning off following the draw with Austria to spend with friends and family before reporting back to Tubize on the evening which Courtois failed to turn up for.

Brazil, Senegal lock horns in international friendly

0
Sadio Mane, Senegal

In the second of their two consecutive friendlies against West African nations, Brazil go head to head with Senegal at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday.

The current African Cup of Nations champions saw their 100% record in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers come to an end on Saturday and will look to return to winning ways.

Interim manager Ramon Menezes recorded his first win in charge of the Brazilian national team on Saturday as he watched his side thrash Guinea 4-1 at the RCDE Stadium.

Brazil Under-20 coach has been temporarily tasked with guiding the star-studded Selecao side through a transitional period following the departure of veteran manager Tite back in December.

Tite stepped down from his role as the nation’s head coach after a six-year stint, following a disappointing run in the 2022 World Cup, where they suffered a quarter-final exit at the hands of Croatia.

Brazil, who are currently third in the latest FIFA World Rankings, have now won all but one of their last six international friendlies since June 2022, with March’s defeat at the hands of Morocco being the exception.

Senegal, on the other hand, saw their 100% record in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers come to an end on Saturday as they were held to a somewhat disappointing 1-1 draw by Benin.

Ahead of September’s group finale against Rwanda, the Lions of Teranga take on Brazil in a mouth-watering friendly as they look to pick up a third win in four games across all competitions.

Both sides met in a similar friendly match up back in October 2019, when Roberto Firmino and Famara Diedhiou scored for either side to force a share of the spoils at the Singapore National Stadium.

While Brazil eased to a comfortable victory against Guinea, they should expect a more difficult challenge from an experienced and star-studded Senegal side.

Sudan and Mauritania face off in Group I

0
Sudan national team

With so much still left to be decided in Group I of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Sudan and Mauritania face off at the Al Merreikh Stadium.

The teams are currently separated by just one point heading into Tuesday’s encounter, which has all the makings of a keenly-contested affair.

Aiming to record consecutive wins for the first time in 2023, Sudan fell to a 2-1 defeat against Kuwait in Thursday’s international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium.

Mauritania have now lost four of their last five matches across all competitions, with a 1-0 victory against Sudan back in March being the only exception.

Sudan also sit third in their AFCON qualifying group, one point behind Congo DR and Gabon in first and second place respectively with a game in hand.

Awaiting them next is the challenge of an opposing outfit with little to choose between the teams, as the two previous meetings have yielded one win apiece.

Picking up five points from four AFCON qualifiers so far, the Lions of Chinguetti sit bottom of Group I as things stand, although a win in their next outing would see them move top of the group.

Having failed to win any of their most recent four matches on the road, Tuesday’s visitors have it all to do in what is set to be a crunch clash away from home.

Perfect Portugal travel away to tackle Iceland

0
Bruno Fernandes, Portugal

Yet to drop a point or even concede a goal in Euro 2024 qualifying Group J, Portugal board a plane to Reykjavík to tackle Iceland at Laugardalsvollur on Tuesday night.

The Selecao ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Bosnia & Herzegovina in their most recent affair, while their hosts went down 2-1 at home to Slovakia.

Already boasting plenty of Nordic managerial experience from his time in charge of Denmark and Norway, newly-appointed Iceland head coach Age Hareide could not get off to a dream start in charge of Our Boys on Saturday, as Slovakia spoiled his welcoming party.

Iceland and Portugal are no strangers to one another, as the hosts memorably held their Iberian counterparts to a 1-1 draw in the group stage of Euro 2016 – before Fernando Santos led the Selecao to continental glory – and both sides have scored in each of the three meetings between the nations so far.

Still finding their feet under Hareide, Iceland ought to become the next victims of Portugal’s ruthless attack and dogged defence in front of their own supporters this week.

It remains to be seen how Martinez’s men would cope against stiffer opposition, but for the time being, the Selecao should continue their perfect start and move ever closer to a place in next year’s finals.

Highflying Scotland host Georgia at Hampden Park

Scotland players celebrate victory at Norway

Two teams who are well on their way to upsetting the continental apple cart lock horns in Tuesday’s Euro 2024 qualifying Group A showdown as Scotland host Georgia at Hampden Park. The hosts made it three wins from three with a remarkable 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Norway on Saturday, while Willy Sagnol‘s side also left it late to get the better of Cyprus by the same scoreline.

A perceived sense of justice prevailed during Scotland’s sojourn to Norway on Saturday, as Steve Clarke‘s men sought to continue their unexpected perfect start to life in Group A after seeing off Cyprus and Spain in March’s opening battles.

Spain’s involvement in the Nations League finals means that La Roja will have the chance to respond further down the line, but for now, Scotland can revel in a wonderful start to proceedings as they vie for back-to-back appearances at the European Championships.

Hampden Park is not normally a happy hunting ground for visiting nations either, as Scotland have won each of their last five home games while conceding just one goal in the process, but their closest challengers can be sure to provide another stern test.

Home advantage always seems to play its part when Scotland and Georgia butt heads, and Tuesday’s game should be no different in front of a jubilant Tartan Army.

Sagnol’s side will no doubt give the Scots a good run for their money, but defensive solidity is not the visitors’ forte, and Clarke’s side can wear down the Crusaders’ backline to steer further clear at the summit.

Veep Bawumia submits forms and says: I Have Sacrificed For NPP “During this period, I have sacrificed for the party; I have defended the party in good times and in challenging times; I have never wavered nor slacked. Never!

0
Vice President Bawumia resonding to cheers from the teeming supporters. With him are his wife and NLA boss, Sammy Awuku

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said that in his 22 years of service to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he has never slacked. According to him, in good and bad times, he stayed true to the NPP and never wavered and that he used those times to build a formidable track record of deeds.

The Vice President said these on Friday, June 16, 2023 at the NPP national headquarters in Accra, after submitting his nomination form to run for the flag-bearer position.

“Dear friends, over the last 22 years, I have worked hard with you for the NPP and for Ghana, from during the Kufuor era as deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, through our years in opposition and now in government,” he noted.

Dr. Bawumia continued that: “during this period, I have sacrificed for the party; I have defended the party in good times and in challenging times, I have never wavered nor slacked. Never! And I have built a solid track record of performance as Vice President and unflinching loyalty to our party and government through rain or shine.”

Though he did not explain how he defended the party, it should be recalled that Dr. Bawumia was the lead witness for the NPP’s 2012 presidential candidate when he disputed the election results in court.

VISION

The Vice President reminded the party and Ghanaians that though he served under President Kufuor as deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana and is currently vice president for Akufo-Addo, he has his own vision to build on the existing foundation.

“I also have my own vision for Ghana. I believe that it is time to move Ghana to the next level by building on the foundations we have put in place so far,” he added.

He said he has a compelling vision for Ghana’s future, adding that the country could possibly be like the advanced nations with determination.

DIGITALIZATION

Known for his advocacy for technological advancement, Dr. Bawumia aims to entrench and enhance the current strategy of industrialisation and introduce new technology-like digital manufacturing for the manufacturing of spare parts, syringes and other equipment.

He wants to see Ghana with a developed and efficient credit system by leveraging integrated databases across banks, the DVLA, the NIA and digital address systems.

This, he explained, would enable workers to buy furniture, cars, TVs, fridges and homes (mortgages) on credit at a lower cost.

The Vice President said he wants to see Ghana attain food security in the near future, aided by science, data, artificial intelligence and irrigation for commercial farming.

“Together with you, I want to see a Ghana with an enhanced focus on private and public investment in tourism, creative arts, and sports,” he remarked, adding that “this is not an exhaustive list and in due course we will have a chance to lay out a comprehensive manifesto for Ghanaians.”

PLEA

He told the supporters, many of whom are party delegates from across the country, that the driving force is his vision to break the ‘eight’ and continue from where President Akufo-Addo stops.

“That is why I am offering myself, in all humility, to contest in the primaries of this phenomenal party, the great New Patriotic Party, to become our flagbearer and presidential candidate for election 2024 and, Insha Allah, the President of the Republic of Ghana.”

MORALE

Several key personalities of the party thronged the party office on Friday to accompany                         Dr. Bawumia to file his nomination, including some members of parliament and the Director General of the National Lottery Authority, Sammy Awuku.

Some MPs took turns to address the gathering, preceding that of the Vice President, who was there with his spouse, the second lady, Samira Bawumia.

This paper understands that out of the entire 137 NPP MPs, 120 have already declared their firm support and endorsed the candidature of the Vice President.
