Mr. Mike Ogbalu III, Chief Executive Officer of PAPSS

PAPSS, the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System, is delighted to announce the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with five African multinational commercial banking groups: Access Bank Group, KCB Group, Standard Bank Group, UBA Group and one other.

These significant partnerships aim to revolutionise the settlement of cross-border transactions across Africa, leveraging on the vast network of subsidiaries and representative offices across major economic centres across Africa.

These MoUs were signed on Monday, 19 June 2023, at the opening ceremony of Afreximbank’s 30th Anniversary Celebrations and 30th Annual Meetings held in Accra, Ghana, in the presence of Heads of State and Prime Ministers from Africa and the Caribbean, Heads of continental policy and governance institutions as well as international institutions.

The signature of these Memorandums signifies a monumental step forward in the pursuit of seamless cross-border trade payments throughout the almost 40 countries covered by these Banks.

The broad collaboration between PAPSS and African commercial banks will pave the way for enhanced efficiency, transparency, and reliability in intra-African settlement.

The adoption of PAPSS’s cutting-edge settlement model will streamline operations and empower businesses by providing a secure and technologically advanced platform for cross-border transactions.

As part of this partnership, Access Bank Group, KCB Group, Standard Bank Group, and UBA Group will collaborate closely with PAPSS to ensure seamless integration of PAPSS into their existing systems. This collaborative effort will include opening up all their African footprints for PAPSS, facilitating settlement of transactions, encouraging the participation of Fintech in PAPSS via the banks and expanding PAPSS to all the banks’ current digital channels such as mobile app banking and e-banking.

Commenting on the signing, Professor Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank, said: “the signature of these MoUs marks a remarkable step towards the realisation of the aspirations of Africa’s fore-leaders, who envisioned the creation of a payment and clearing union about six decades ago.

It also draws us closer to domesticating cross-border payments by enabling payments for cross-border trade in African currencies while strengthening African currencies. By leveraging on the vast continental coverage of these African commercial banks, PAPSS will seamlessly facilitate cross-border trade and payments and boost intra-African trade and investments”.

Also commenting on the signing, H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary General of the AfCFTA, said: “the introduction of the new PAPSS Model for onboarding African Commercial Banks and the signing of the MoUs with the five African Commercial Bank Groups signifies a bold step towards the full operationalisation of PAPSS for the benefit of African traders and SMEs in the implementation of the AfCFTA Agreement.”

The Chief Executive Officer of PAPSS, Mr. Mike Ogbalu III, expressed enthusiasm about these collaborations, stating that “these partnerships with Access Bank Group, KCB Group, Standard Bank Group, and UBA Group mark a significant milestone in the journey toward a more integrated and efficient African banking landscape.

By embracing PAPSS’ Commercial Bank Settlement Model, these banks are helping build a robust continental platform for fostering cross-border payments, thereby paving the way for financial inclusion and substantial continental economic development.”

These MoUs will be put into effect gradually in partnership with central banks in the countries where the 5 Group Banks operate. Customers of the banks in Africa will be informed through the usual channels of communication as soon as the service becomes available in their countries. PAPSS and the banks will be working towards making this service available towards year-end.

Yvonne Nelson and Ruthy

Yvonne Nelson’s book titled “#IAmNotYvonneNelson” has sparked online conversations due to its shocking revelations and references to various individuals.

Simply put, the discussion surrounding Yvonne Nelson’s book continues to unfold considering the ad-hoc damage control from the camp of rapper Sarkodie with “Try Me” song.

Y’all know that Yvonne Nelson in her infamous memoir cited how the Tema-based rapper impregnated her in 2013 which resulted in a pregnancy.

In Chapter 8 of the memoir, she recounts her decision to terminate the pregnancy because the rapper did not accept responsibility, explaining that later she found out the rapper had another girlfriend who was studying at a university abroad hence his rejection.

However, opinions have been divided following Sarkodie’s defense as the majority of Ghanaians on social media have chastised Yvonne Nelson for being at fault in her past dealing with Sarkodie which resulted in abortion.

According to Ruthy, Yvonne Nelson didn’t think thoroughly about the damming aftermath effects before launching her memoir. As it stands, Yvonne Nelson is not on good terms with her biological mother largely due to the content of her book.

Also, rapper Sarkodie who got her pregnant and had a subsequent abortion is now a happily married man, but here is the case Yvonne Nelson is still not married at her age – 38.

Prince David Osei

Sarkodie whilst responding to the allegations by Yvonne Nelson in her ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson’ book said the actress is for the streets. In the ‘Try Me’ song, he painted Yvonne Nelson as a woman who has been with multiple men.

First of all, let me clap for you baby you are brave but you can’t pick and choose what to say pls behave, nobody sent you so Ohemaa if you want to talk, you have to tell the world every n*gga that you f*cked” Sarkodie rapped.

The song has sparked controversy as Yvonne Nelson also clapped back at the rapper. “Insults wont work Michael. Respect womanhood, Im happy the world gets to see how you are playing this and the real you. Young women get to learn from this. You would get the applause for a rap. Still doesn’t change the TRUTH,” she tweeted.

Adding his thoughts to support his friend, Prince David Osei took to Twitter to say that Sakodie’s reply is full of “Childish Tantrums!!“.

Never let the kid in you destroy the king in you … Whoever sleeps with a woman get her pregnant and don’t own up as man and goes about labeling her “Whore” is the dumbest asshole ever .. She was a “Whore” yet you shagged her unprotected got her pregnant!! God have mercy on those supporting tomfoolery!!,” he added.

In another tweet, he said “it’s about respecting and valuing the women we have been intimate within the past. It’s never okay to use derogatory terms or make someone feel embarrassed for something as natural as intimacy.

Real men treat women with kindness, empathy, and respect, regardless of the circumstances. Let’s all strive to create a world where every person is valued and treated with dignity. Take care! Good Morning”.

In blow to Sunak, UK court rules Rwanda deportation plan unlawful

0
Several charities and human rights groups have criticised the plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda

A British court has ruled that the government’s controversial plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful as the African nation cannot be considered a safe third country.

In a major setback for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has pledged to deter people from arriving across the Channel in small boats, three Court of Appeal judges on Thursday said the “removal of asylum seekers to Rwanda” would be “unlawful”.

“The deficiencies in the asylum system in Rwanda are such that there are substantial grounds for believing that there is a real risk that persons sent to Rwanda will be returned to their home countries where they face persecution or other inhumane treatment,” judge Ian Burnett said, but added that he, himself, disagreed with the other two judges on this point.

The United Kingdom government has been planning to deport asylum seekers to the East African country as part of a 120 million pound ($148m) deal to deter people from crossing the English Channel from France in small boats.

Asylum Aid director Alison Pickup said many of her clients were breathing a sigh of relief.

“Some of them have experienced torture, they’ve had very traumatic journeys, and have been waiting for over a year to find out if they will be able to make a case in the UK – or if they will be sent to Rwanda, a country they know nothing about,” Pickup told Al Jazeera.

Fires detected as fighting rages in Sudan’s Darfur region

Heat signatures as detected by Nasa on 27 June

Evidence has emerged of significant damage in another part of the West Darfur region in Sudan, as fighting continues between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Nasa data from 27 June shows what appear to be a number of fires concentrated in the area of Murnei, about 80km (50 miles) south of the regional capital of El Geneina, which itself suffered extensive damage in mid-May.

We found satellite images showing the damage in Murnei occurred between 26 June and 28 June, with an image from yesterday showing smoke still visible at one location.

The heat signatures earlier in the week were picked up by Nasa’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS). It’s not clear exactly which buildings might be burning, as there’s little information coming out of that area.

It is the latest to suffer destruction from the conflict in the wider Darfur area, which has seen particularly intense fighting in recent weeks.

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled across the border into Chad, since the fighting began.

Uganda passed one of the world’s harshest anti-gay laws. LGBTQ people describe living there as “hell”

0

In between leading Sunday services at All Saints’ Cathedral in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, Rev. Canon John Awodi declares vehemently that “homosexuality is a sin that must be repented of,” adding that it is against the “order of God.”

“Homosexuality is not natural, it is unnatural. That is the stand of the church here. It is unbiblical, it is unnatural,” the Anglican cleric told CNN.

These themes have become a common thread in his sermons and interviews, especially since Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act was signed into law last month.

The act outlaws gay marriage in Uganda, punishes same-sex acts with life imprisonment, and calls for the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” – which includes sex with a minor or otherwise vulnerable person, having sex while HIV positive and incest.

After initially wavering and sending the bill – which is widely popular with lawmakers, Christian and Muslim leaders in Uganda, as well as commentators on social media – back to parliament for review, President Yoweri Museveni eventually signed it into law in May, leading to global criticism, existential dread within the LGBTQ+ community, and legal challenges.

‘Nowhere is safe’

“It dehumanizes us as human beings, it doesn’t treat us as citizens. We are literally criminals and we are illegal in our own space that we call home. Nowhere is safe for any queer person living in Uganda,” Joan Amek, co-founder of Rella Women’s Foundation, told CNN.

Rahul Gandhi’s convoy stopped by Indian police in Manipur

Supporters of Rahul Gandhi speak with him after his convoy, heading to Churachandpur, was stopped by the police

Tear gas was fired near the convoy of Indian opposition and Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi, who was stopped by police as he was on his way to visit the conflict-hit northeastern Manipur state.

At least 100 people have been killed in ethnic clashes and violence in Manipur since last month, as thousands of homes have been burned and shops and businesses vandalised. Authorities have moved nearly 40,000 people to safer places.

Gandhi was travelling on Thursday to Churachandpur district, one of the worst affected areas in the violence, when security forces stopped his convoy at Bishnupur, about 20km (12.4 miles) from the capital Imphal, citing security fears.

Tear gas shells were then fired to disperse a crowd that had started gathering in the area.

“Seeing the ground situation, we stopped him from moving forward and advised him to travel to Churachandpur via helicopter,” Bishnupur police chief Heisnam Balram Singh told Reuters TV partner ANI.

“There is a possibility of a grenade attack along the highway through which Rahul Gandhi is moving. Keeping his security and safety in mind, we’ve not allowed him.”

The 53-year-old Gandhi’s convoy returned to Imphal and he reached Churachandpur by helicopter, said Keisham Meghachandra Singh, Manipur state Congress president.

Wagner still recruiting despite mutiny, BBC finds

0
Alexander Lukashenko gave an elaborate account this week of how he persuaded Prigozhin to end his mutiny

The Wagner Group is still recruiting fighters across Russia, days after staging a mutiny that led Vladimir Putin to raise fears of civil war.

Using a Russian phone number, we called more than a dozen recruitment centres saying, if asked, that we were inquiring on behalf of a brother.

All those who replied confirmed that it was business as usual.

From Kaliningrad in the west to Krasnodar in the south, no-one believed the group was being disbanded.

In the Arctic city of Murmansk, a woman at the Viking sports club confirmed that she was still signing up fighters for Ukraine.

“That’s where we are recruiting for, yes. If someone wants to go, they just have to call me and we’ll set a day.”

Wagner’s long list of contact points are mostly based at fight clubs, including martial arts schools and boxing clubs.

Several people who picked up the phone stressed that new members were signing contracts with the mercenary group itself, not the Russian defence ministry.

Contacts for Wagner’s recruitment offices are still online and insisting it is business as usual

“It’s absolutely nothing to do with the defence ministry,” a man at the Sparta sports club in Volgograd was adamant. “Nothing has stopped, we’re still recruiting.”

The demand for the mercenaries to transfer to the defence ministry, thus bringing the Wagner Group and its boss Yevgeny Prigozhin to heel, was at the root of the fierce feud that exploded into last weekend’s armed uprising.
