Ernest Nnajuiba Ukechukwu

An Accra High Court has sentenced a Nigerian national based in Brazil, Ernest Nnajuiba Ukechukwu, to ten years imprisonment by an Accra High court for possession and attempted smuggling of cocaine into Ghana.

The cocaine weighing 16568.83 grams was seized at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) by officials of the Narcotics Control Commission, on 11 December 2022 when he was going through arrival formalities.

He was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in hard labour and charged with a fine of Ten thousand penalty units, of which he will serve three (3) additional years in default. The sentence is expected to run concurrently.

A statement issued by the Acting Director, in Charge of Public Affairs and International Relations, Francis Opoku Amoah, the convict was picked up as part of daily routine.

Upon interrogations, his narrations were found to be distorting, leading to further checks on his luggage, revealing the concealed consignment in his luggage.

Mr Ukechukwu was arrested by officers of the Narcotics Control Commission and charged with six (6) counts of narcotic offences relating to importation and possession of narcotic drugs, without lawful authority.

Ernest Nnajuiba Ukechukwu, the convict

He was arraigned before the Criminal Court Division of the Accra High Court, where he pleaded guilty to all six counts and was consequently convicted on his plea by the court presided over by Her Lordship Mary Ekue Yanzuh.

The Court also ordered the destruction of the exhibit which was carried out the same day by the investigators of NACOC in the presence of the court Registrar, State prosecutors and the defense counsel at about 1433hrs.

The Commission reiterates its commitment to upholding its mandate to protect the public from the trade and usage of illegal narcotics to maintain public safety, hence the facilitation of the sentencing.

The possession, use and transportation of illicit drugs without lawful authorization are still illegal and punishable under sections 40 (1) and 41 (1) of the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020, (Act 1019).

Ex-US Marine accused of training Chinese military pilots fights extradition to the US

Former Marine pilot Daniel Duggan is fighting extradition to the United States from Australia

Former Marine Daniel Duggan once flew Harrier jets for the United States, taking off and landing on Navy carriers during international missions as part of Marine Attack Squadron 214, based in Yuma, Arizona.

That was over 20 years ago, but his activity since leaving the service is now the subject of a US indictment that alleges he used his specialist skills to teach Chinese pilots how to land planes on aircraft carriers, claims he denies.

Since last October, Duggan, 54, has been held in a maximum-security prison in regional Australia as his lawyers fight an extradition order, approved by Australia’s attorney general, to return him to the US to face trial on charges including money laundering and conspiracy to export US defense services.

On Tuesday, Duggan’s lawyers argued for a stay of extradition while Australia’s Office of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS) investigates claims of improper action by Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), including that Duggan was “lured” from China, where he was living, to Australia, where the US had legal reach to arrest him.

The case comes as the US and its allies seek to unite against China in the Indo-Pacific, where Beijing has been fortifying islands with military installations that they fear may one day be used in a regional conflict.

From Lithgow Correctional Centre, where he’s being held, Duggan told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that he was “living a nightmare.” “I strenuously reject the indictment in its entirety,” he said.

Palestinian gunmen killed near West Bank Samaritan community

Israel says troops returned fire after coming under attack

Three Palestinians have been shot dead after opening fire on Israeli soldiers near Nablus in the occupied West Bank, Israel’s military has said.

The troops were guarding the Samaritans, a tiny community which traces its origins back to biblical Israelite tribes.

Security camera footage shows a figure shooting at two soldiers who return fire before a two-minute gun battle.

It comes amid spiralling Israeli-Palestinian tensions in the West Bank.

Since the start of the year, more than 160 Palestinians – militants and civilians – have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

On the Israeli side, at least 30 people – including two foreigners and a Palestinian worker – have been killed in attacks or apparent attacks by Palestinians. All were civilians except one off-duty serving soldier and a member of the Israeli security forces.

In the incident on Tuesday morning, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the soldiers were fired at from a car. It said the soldiers returned fire “neutralising the terrorists”.

It said weapons, cartridges and military equipment were found and seized.

The official Palestinian Wafa news agency said Israeli forces took away the bodies of the men, who it said were aged between 32 and 43, and their vehicle.

The area where the incident took place is home to the Samaritans, a community believed to number fewer than 900, half of which live in Israel and the other half under Palestinian rule outside Nablus. Unusually, its members hold both Israeli and Palestinian citizenship.

China replaces Foreign Minister Qin Gang with Wang Yi

0
Qin Gang has not been seen in public for a month

The Chinese government has removed Qin Gang from the post of foreign minister and replaced him with his predecessor, Wang Yi, according to state media.

“China’s top legislature voted to appoint Wang Yi as foreign minister … as it convened a session on Tuesday,” the Xinhua news agency reported. “Qin Gang was removed from the post of foreign minister.”

The announcement came a month after Qin’s last public appearance.

During the national evening news, state broadcaster CCTV gave no reason for Qin’s removal.

Adding to the mystery around Qin’s removal, it was approved at a meeting of the Standing Committee of China’s rubber-stamp legislature, the National People’s Congress, which usually gathers at the end of the month.

A sudden disappearance from the public eye

The 57-year-old, who was made foreign minister in December, has not been seen in public since June 25, when he held talks with counterparts from Russia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

Qin’s final appearance in state media was a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, who visited Beijing less than 48 hours after the Wagner mercenary group’s abortive rebellion against Moscow’s top military brass.

China then cancelled talks between Qin and European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on July 4 without explanation.

Qin subsequently missed high-level meetings with United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and US climate envoy John Kerry.

NDC candidate eyes Subin seat

0
Nana Akwasi Denkyi Agyekum - NDC candidate for Subin

Nana Akwasi Denkyi Agyekum, the National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for Subin, is poised to annex the seat for the party in the 2024 Elections.

The Subin parliamentary seat has been occupied by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) since January 1997.

But, Nana Akwasi Denkyi Agyekum has stated that, his ambition to contest the seat was to win the Subin Constituency for the NDC, come 2024.

According to him, the constituents deserved better from the votes they cast every four years, hence, his decision to help the electorate enjoy their fair share of the national cake as Ghanaians.

Outlining his vision for the constituents during a meeting with the media, the aspirant noted that his agenda was to alleviate their plight and bring about development, and to ensure that the talents of the youths in the constituency were harnessed for total development.

According to him, the only time the electorate was engaged in an encounter with the politicians, especially their legislator, was during elections, which, he said, should not be the case, and assured that he would change the trend by engaging the constituents, especially the youth, from time to time to enable him address their basic needs.

He stressed that, there were many youth with football talents in the constituency, and for that matter, he is going to embark on one Astro Turf in the area to help the youth identify their talents in that area.

Nana Denkyi Agyekum disclosed that he would soon engage the constituents to provide them interest-free loans through the Women’s Organisers, and also initiate car loans to individuals.

He urged the Ashanti Region to be proud of the National Democratic Congress for bringing monumental infrastructural development to the region, and entreated the party fraternity to always remain united towards the upcoming 2024 parliamentary and presidential elections.

Mahama victory in 2024 is a project for youth -Agbenya

0

Mr. Precious Agbenya, a political activist and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communication Team, has stated that, the victory that awaited the party’s flagbearer in the 2024 General Elections must be a project for the Ghanaian youth.

According to him, the youth were suffering, to the extent that one could not ask a woman’s hand in marriage, because of the economic hardship created by the Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

He noted during a meeting with the media that the youth, who would take over the leadership mantle in future, had lost with the belief that there was no future for them, as their hopes keep fading day in and day out, because of the mismanagement of the economy by selfish and corrupt political leaders.

He stated that irrespective of one’s political affiliation, it was time the youth rose up and campaigned vigorously for the former President, John Mahama, to ensure that victory in the 2024 Elections was a mere formality to rescue the country and restore hope for them.

Mr. Agbenya said considering the performance of the ex-President, from 2012 to 2016, in terms of physical infrastructure, and the investment his government made in the agricultural sector, through free fertilisers for farmers, was a clear indication that, given the chance, he would do far better than the current government.

He observed that, there was nothing working in the country in all sectors of the economy, and that justice, peace and security, that were the backbone of every strong economy, had been compromised by the present administration.

The political activist, therefore, appealed to the youth to join the campaign to ensure that, the former President, described as a nation builder, was back in office to help rebuild Ghana.

District Assembly elections in October defies 4-year term mandate – KMA PM

0
Patrick Kwame Frimpong, Presiding Member - KMA

Patrick Kwame Frimpong, Presiding Member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has drawn the attention of the Minister of Local Government to an anomaly with the intended District Assembly Elections in October this year.

According to the Presiding Member, the last elections were held on December 19, 2019, after which the Assembly was constituted and the members sworn into office in January 2020 for a four year term.

He contended that the four-year term, therefore, expires in January 2024 and that the proposed District Assembly Elections for October was premature and a little too early in advance of the expiration of the mandate.

The KMA Presiding Member has, therefore, appealed to the sector Minister and other major stakeholders, including the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), the Director of Electoral Services of the EC, the Director of the Institute of Local Government Studies, the President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), the Regional Director of the EC, and the media to address the issue in the name of fair play.

Mr. Frimpong, who is also the Assembly Member for Krofrom East Electoral Area in Kumasi, has also proposed an amendment to the effect that the Unit Committee members be renamed Electoral Area Committee members or Assistants, since the voters in an electoral area are mandated to vote in the Unit Committee Elections.

He further proposed that contestants for the Unit Committee Elections must be arranged in chronological order on the ballot papers, with their pictures alongside their names for easy identification and voting by the electorate.

He contended that the first five contestants with the highest votes are elected to take the positions instead of the existing process.

Mr. Frimpong noted that the proposals, if duly considered, would go a long way to ensure a fair and smooth electoral process to promote the growth of District Assembly Elections in the country.

The Best Foods for People with Kidney Disease

0
Foods that keep your kidneys healthy

If you have kidney disease, you may need to follow a special diet. It’s usually one that is low in sodium, phosphorus, and potassium. This may not heal your kidneys, but it can help make them healthier.

Diabetes and high blood pressure are common risk factors for kidney disease. Obesity, smoking, insulin resistance, high uric acid levels, and various other health conditions can contribute.

When the kidneys aren’t working properly, waste builds up in the blood, including waste products from food.

Therefore, people with kidney disease can benefit from following a special diet, known as a renal diet.

Diet and kidney disease

Dietary restrictions vary depending on the level of kidney damage. People with later-stage kidney disease will have different restrictions from those with early kidney disease.

At any stage, the diet will need to boost kidney function while lowering the risk of further damage.

While dietary restrictions vary, people with kidney disease typically need to restrict the following nutrients, as the kidneys may have difficulty removing or processing them, and high levels can cause damage to the body.

Since kidney disease has close links with heart disease, it is also a good idea to combine these choices with a heart-healthy diet, one that contains plenty of fresh, plant-based foods and is low in saturated fats.

People’s experiences of kidney disease vary, so it’s important to talk to a doctor about your individual dietary needs.

  1. Cauliflower

Cauliflower provides many nutrients, including vitamin K, folate, and fiber. It also contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Try mashed cauliflower in place of potato for a low-potassium side dish.

  1. Blueberries

Blueberries are rich in nutrients and antioxidants known as anthocyanins, which may protect against heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases.

They are also low in sodium, phosphorus, and potassium.

  1. Sea bass

Sea bass is a fish option that provides high quality protein. It also contains healthy fats called omega-3s. Omega-3s may help prevent a range of diseases and boost the health of those living with long-term conditions.

However, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) recommends eating small portions of meat or fish, as high protein levels can make the kidneys work harder.

  1. Red grapes

Red grapes are a good source of antioxidants called flavonoids, which may help reduce inflammation and protect against heart disease, diabetes, and other health conditions.

  1. Egg whites

Egg whites provide a high quality, kidney-friendly source of protein that is low in phosphorus.

Egg whites may be a better choice than whole eggs for people on a renal diet, as egg yolks can be high in phosphorus.

  1. Garlic

Garlic provides a tasty alternative to salt, adding flavor to dishes while also providing nutritional benefits.

It’s a good source of manganese and vitamin B6. It also contains sulfur compounds with anti-inflammatory properties.

  1. Buckwheat

Buckwheat is a whole grain that is low in potassium. It also contains B vitamins, magnesium, iron, and fiber.

It’s also gluten-free, making it suitable for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.

  1. Olive oil

Olive oil is a healthy source of vitamin E and mostly unsaturated fat. It is also phosphorus-free, making it a suitable option for people with kidney disease.

Most of the fat in olive oil is oleic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties.

What’s more, monounsaturated fats are stable at high temperatures, making olive oil a healthy choice for cooking.

  1. Bulgur

Bulgur is a whole grain wheat product and a kidney-friendly alternative to other whole grains that are higher in potassium and phosphorus.

Bulgur provides B vitamins, magnesium, and iron, as well as plant-based protein and fiber, which is important for digestive health.

  1. Cabbage

Cabbage belongs to the cruciferous vegetable family and provides vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant compounds.

The authors of a 2021 study note that white, green, and red cabbage can help:

manage blood sugar

reduce the risk of kidney and liver damage

prevent oxidative stress and obesity

  1. Skinless chicken

Skinless chicken breast has less fat and phosphorus than skin-on chicken.

  1. Bell peppers

Bell peppers are high in vitamins A and C and other antioxidants but low in potassium.

These nutrients are important for immune function, which is closely linked with kidney disease.

  1. Onions

Reducing salt can be challenging, but onions are one way of providing sodium-free flavor to renal-diet dishes.

Sautéing onions with garlic, olive oil, and herbs can add flavor to dishes without compromising your kidney health.

Onions provide vitamin C, manganese, and B vitamins, including folate. They also contain prebiotic fibers that help keep your digestive system healthy by feeding beneficial gut bacteria.

  1. Arugula

Arugula is a flavorful and nutrient-dense green that is low in potassium, making it a good choice for kidney-friendly salads and side dishes.

Arugula provides vitamin K, manganese, and calcium, all of which are important for bone health.

This nutritious green also contains nitrates, which can lower blood pressure, an important benefit for those with kidney disease.

  1. Macadamia nuts

Most nuts are high in phosphorus and not suitable if you’re following a renal diet.

However, macadamia nuts are a delicious option for people with kidney problems. They are lower in potassium and phosphorus than peanuts or almonds.

They also provide calcium, healthy fats, folate, magnesium, copper, iron, and manganese.

  1. Radish

Radishes are crunchy vegetables that make a healthy addition to a renal diet. They are very low in potassium and phosphorus but contain other important nutrients, such as folate and vitamin A.

Their peppery taste makes a flavorful addition to low sodium dishes.

  1. Turnips

Turnips are root vegetables that provide fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and manganese.

They can be roasted or boiled and mashed for a healthy side dish that works well for a renal diet. Alternatively, serve raw, grated turnips with a salad or add them to a winter stew.

  1. Pineapple

Pineapple can make a sweet treat for people with kidney problems. It is lower in phosphorus, potassium, and sodium than oranges, bananas, or kiwis

Pineapple is also a good source of fiber and vitamin A, and it contains bromelain, an enzyme that may help reduce inflammation.

  1. Cranberries

Cranberries contain phytonutrients called A-type proanthocyanidins, antioxidants that may prevent urinary tract and kidney infections by reducing bacteria levels in urine. They are also low in potassium, phosphorus, and sodium.

There are close links between urinary tract infections (UTI) and kidney infections, and a UTI can lead to kidney complications.

You can eat cranberries dried, cooked, fresh, or as a juice.

  1. Shiitake mushrooms

Shiitake mushrooms are a savory ingredient that you can use as a plant-based meat substitute. They are suitable for people with kidney disease who follow a plant-based diet and those on a renal diet who need to limit their protein intake.

They are an excellent source of B vitamins, copper, manganese, and selenium. In addition, they provide a good amount of plant-based protein and dietary fiber.

Shiitake mushrooms are lower in potassium, sodium, and phosphorus than portobella and white button mushrooms, making them a smart choice for those following a renal diet.

Feature: The Abelemkpe’s millions and which government registered the worse scandal?

0
Feature

Ghanaians were still managing these difficult times, as government is trying its best, to bring relief to the people, even as most see, as not good enough. Then news from the Ghanaian Chronicle, hit them hard in their faces on the morning of the penultimate Friday of July, 2023, blowing out their senses.

Then anger set in. For how can a minister of state be said to have million dollars, euros and Ghana cedis stolen from her home? And what was more shocking was that, this minister was not on the list of those tagged to be allegedly corrupt. So, if she had such a booty, stocked up in her room, then how much would those alleged to be corrupt keep in their homes?

In the minds of many Ghanaians, Hon. Cecilia Abena Dapaah hit the news this time for all the wrong reasons. It was not some sanitation deal gone bad or sanitary officers supervising the dumping of rubbish in water bodies.

In view of the furore, I will look at a few statements going round and ask my own questions and give my own opinion. The case is a scandal because it is an event or action that caused shock and disapproval.

Statements posted in social and traditional media include, 1). Why will a knowledgeable minister and agent of government keep such amounts at home? 2). Ex-President John Dramani Mahama, stated that this is an example of bad precedence being set by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and 3). The ‘legendary’ level of greed of the political class is what will finish this country completely (Dr. Randy Abbey).

To the first comment, my question is, is there any law which sets an upper limit of amounts of money that could be kept in a home?

Readers, I am not in any way defending what is wrong, but I think it is very important that Ghanaians do not get carried away by sensationalism and attempt quoting laws that do not exist in our statutes.

To the second, is ex-president John Dramani Mahama truly saying such a situation is the first ever in Ghana?  I shall deal with this, later in the write-up.

To the third, I believe Randy Abbey, with all his experience, got carried away with sensationalism and had to speak to please the gallery. Where greed cannot be established, it must not be mentioned.

It is standard practice that politicians keep money at home and offices, because, daily the ordinary Ghanaian will come demanding something small. Under the current circumstance, whether we like it or not, a Ghanaian politician must always be loaded with cash, especially during this campaign season.

It is for people like Randy to start educating the ordinary Ghanaian about the importance of not collecting money from politicians. Moreso, Randy surely knows about this and so what has he done about that?

So long as there is no law in this country stating the upper limit of amounts of money to be kept in places other than the banks and other financial institutions, it is nobody’s business if someone self-inflicts risk of armed-robbery on themselves.

To Cecilia Abena Dapaah, however, I ask, why keep such huge amounts of money in the house? Is she part of a financial war chest, of an aspirant? If the money is even for her husband, which he may have acquired through genuine businesses, are the couples motivated to keep the money in the house to avoid the Ghana Revenue Authority, hence evading tax?

On a more serious note, is Cecilia and her husband involved in some money laundering, which is a crime? This whole issue will need further investigations to clear the good name of Cecilia Abena Dapaah. But all the same, it will be very difficult for people to pardon her. This singular act has, in the public eyes, smeared acts of corruption on all political office holders, whether they are indeed corrupt or not.

Whatever is happening to this NPP government? Why are some appointees making it difficult to make the president have some peace? Not when there is hardship all over and with the managers of our economy trying to stabilise the dollar, we have millions of dollars sitting in people’s homes, instead of shoring up our cedi in the banks.

Knowing this beautiful woman personally, I can only suggest that she was keeping the money for an aspirant. Putting it in the bank, will defeat the purpose, especially when money maybe needed at the time the banks are closed. A seasoned politician made such a statement on this. Continue reading.

I will re-emphasise that unless that money belongs to someone of great importance, I cannot fathom, why it could not be lodged it in the banks or invested it in some legal businesses. For there is absolutely no reason for keeping such amounts at home and even though, it is not illegal, the perception of corruption is high.

Such incidents never happened in the Kufuor administration and for a Kufuor branded minister, re-appointed to serve in this NPP government to have done this, makes one wonder.

The act of keeping huge sums of money at home is not a crime but the reason behind that could be, and this where I join Ghanaians to ask Cecilia, why, why and why?

Still, all I can say is that, Cecilia is not the kind to be involved in any shady deals. She has taken the matter up in court and I know that unlike a certain case in history, this one will take its full course.

It is very interesting to hear the NDC making noise all over the place, as if such a scenario has never happened in Ghana before. And how hypocritical it is for the NDC members to pretend that when talking about scandals in high places, they do not know that they hold the world record.

In December of 1997, news broke out that a leading member of the ruling NDC government and a top politician, Obed Asamoah, had hauled two of his security details to court for stealing ¢100 million from his room. This was during the period of the worse economic hardships ever recorded in Ghana.

It was so bad that workers had to be laid off, the dollar kept appreciating twice a day and prices of essential commodities went up thrice in a day. It was so bad that the nation’s liabilities far exceeded its assets, and we had to go out and borrow to pay interest on existing loans, thereby ever increasing our principal debt.

Conditions that we are facing now are nothing compared to the 90s. And the only reason for that was because of the poor and reckless management of Ghana and our economy by the NDC administration, because no external factor could be blamed. In the end we had no choice but to opt for the HIPC Initiative.

It was in this era, that Obed Asamoah operated another Bank of Ghana and kept billions in his room. An insignificant part of the money was stolen over a period of time which was not easily noticed by the politician.Same happened in the case of Cecilia, so no NDC person should make any noise.

During an interview with the Ghanaian Chronicle, published on Monday, May 3, 2004, Mr Obed Asamoah said he was saddened by the way the issue was being hyped up. To him, all political leaders kept money in their houses because in politics, one cannot function in emergencies on the basis of issuing cheques. This was the NDC’s official position on the matter and I hope Randy Abbey got this. And today, this same NDC is attacking the NPP and Cecilia Dapaah.

In the case of the two policemen who stole Obed Asamoah’s money, one of them bought two brand new cars and converted them into taxis. And he also built a large house in his hometown and was at the roofing level when he was arrested for stealing.

What is quite interesting was that the case was later dropped, so the policemen could not be jailed for stealing and where the money actually came from could not be established in court. The policemen were however expelled from the service. The question is, why was the case dropped? NDC is well noted for dropping cases that will expose the level of corruption in the party. Woyome comes to mind, here.

With Obed Asamoah’s case of stolen millions, I do not think, H.E. John Dramani Mahama is being fair in saying H.E. Nana Addo is setting a bad precedent.

In this case, one may ask, between NPP and NDC, which party while in power, registered the worse scandal? Obed Asamoah claimed that he kept the party’s money on himself in the house, when he was not the NDC’s financial secretary or treasurer. Cecilia Dapaah is yet to tell Ghanaians who that money belonged to.

Obed Asamoah did not see it morally right to resign his post as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, but held on tight, right to the end. Meanwhile, Cecilia Abena Dapaah did the honourable thing and resigned from office. It shows the character of this woman, whose departure will remove some shine in politics.

May I remind Ghanaians that H.E. Jerry Rawlings got so mad at the Ghanaians who were questioning Obed Asamoah that he went ahead to call them dzimakpla.

Dzimakpla means someone who is not brought up but reared. In other words, such a person is uncultured, uncouth, without manners and devoid of all the positive characteristics found in a human being. This derogatory word also extends to the parents who are classified here, as useless and senseless when it comes to child upbringing.

To date, H.E. Nana Addo has not altered a word against the numerous Ghanaians talking against Cecilia Dapaah. This shows the home and the party he comes from and belongs to.

In all this, it is obvious that the NDC is the worse when it comes to such scandals.

‘Special Win’ over hosts New Zealand leaves Phillipines players in tears

0
Philippines' players in tears after victory

The Philippines’ first Women’s World Cup victory “has to be one of the biggest wins in the history of sport in the country”, says manager Alen Stajcic.

Sarina Bolden’s early header shocked co-hosts New Zealand, who missed a golden opportunity to edge closer to the knockout stages in Wellington, but it was a brilliant result for debutants the Philippines.

“How can you top beating a host nation at a World Cup? It’s number one,” said Stajcic.

“It was very emotional out on the pitch, seeing just about everyone crying. It’s unbelievable. When you hear stories of other teams needing so long to win World Cup matches… We have done it in our second match in our first World Cup.

“You can’t really appreciate how far back in the pack we have come compared to these teams. The unity, work rate and heart from the team was special.

“I don’t know if there’s been a bigger win for Philippines’ sport. It has to be one of the biggest wins in the history of the country.”

Global success has come the way of the Philippines thanks to superstar boxer Manny Pacquiao, but at this World Cup new sporting heroes are emerging.

The Philippines players celebrated passionately at full-time as substitutes and staff sprinted onto the pitch with many holding their heads in their hands in disbelief.
