Proven Benefits of Olive Oil

0
Olive oil

Olive oil may offer health benefits as it is high in healthy monosaturated fats and antioxidants. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

The health effects of dietary fat are controversial.

However, experts agree that olive oil — especially extra virgin — is good for you.

  1. Olive Oil Is Rich in Healthy Monounsaturated Fats

Olive oil is the natural oil extracted from olives, the fruit of the olive tree.

About 14% of the oil is saturated fat, whereas 11% is polyunsaturated, such as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

But the predominant fatty acid in olive oil is a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, making up 73% of the total oil content.

Studies suggest that oleic acid reduces inflammation and may even have beneficial effects on genes linked to cancer.

Monounsaturated fats are also quite resistant to high heat, making extra virgin olive oil a healthy choice for cooking.

  1. Olive Oil Contains Large Amounts of Antioxidants

Extra virgin olive oil is fairly nutritious.

Apart from its beneficial fatty acids, it contains modest amounts of vitamins E and K.

But olive oil is also loaded with powerful antioxidants.

These antioxidants are biologically active and may reduce your risk of chronic diseases.

They also fight inflammation and help protect your blood cholesterol from oxidation — two benefits that may lower your risk of heart disease.

  1. Olive Oil Has Strong Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Chronic inflammation is thought to be a leading driver of diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, arthritis and even obesity.

Extra-virgin olive oil can reduce inflammation, which may be one of the main reasons for its health benefits.

The main anti-inflammatory effects are mediated by the antioxidants. Key among them is oleocanthal, which has been shown to work similarly to ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory drug.

Some scientists estimate that the oleocanthal in 3.4 tablespoons (50 ml) of extra virgin olive oil has a similar effect as 10% of the adult dosage of ibuprofen.

Research also suggests that oleic acid, the main fatty acid in olive oil, can reduce levels of important inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP).

One study also showed that olive oil antioxidants can inhibit some genes and proteins that drive inflammation.

  1. Olive Oil May Help Prevent Strokes

Stroke is caused by a disturbance of blood flow to your brain, either due to a blood clot or bleeding.

In developed nations, stroke is the second most common cause of death, right behind heart disease.

The relationship between olive oil and stroke risk has been studied extensively.

A large review of studies in 841,000 people found that olive oil was the only source of monounsaturated fat associated with a reduced risk of stroke and heart disease.

In another review in 140,000 participants, those who consumed olive oil were at a much lower risk of stroke than those who did not.

  1. Olive Oil Is Protective Against Heart Disease

Heart disease is the most common cause of death in the world.

Observational studies conducted a few decades ago showed that heart disease is less common in Mediterranean countries.

This led to extensive research on the Mediterranean diet, which has now been shown to significantly reduce heart disease risk.

Extra virgin olive oil is one of the key ingredients in this diet, protecting against heart disease in several ways.

It lowers inflammation, protects “bad” LDL cholesterol from oxidation, improves the lining of your blood vessels and may help prevent excessive blood clotting.

Interestingly, it has also been shown to lower blood pressure, which is one of the strongest risk factors for heart disease and premature death. In one study, olive oil reduced the need for blood pressure medication by 48%.

Dozens — if not hundreds — of studies indicate that extra virgin olive oil has powerful benefits for your heart.

If you have heart disease, a family history of heart disease or any other major risk factor, you may want to include plenty of extra virgin olive oil in your diet.

  1. Olive Oil Is Not Associated With Weight Gain and Obesity

Eating excessive amounts of fat causes weight gain.

However, numerous studies have linked the Mediterranean diet, rich in olive oil, with favorable effects on body weight.

In a 30-month study in over 7,000 Spanish college students, consuming a lot of olive oil was not linked to increased weight.

Additionally, one three-year study in 187 participants found that a diet rich in olive oil was linked to increased levels of antioxidants in the blood, as well as weight loss.

  1. Olive Oil May Fight Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative condition in the world.

One of its key features is a buildup of so-called beta-amyloid plaques inside your brain cells.

One study in mice showed that a substance in olive oil can help remove these plaques.

Additionally, a human study indicated that a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil benefitted brain function.

Keep in mind that more research is needed on the impact of olive oil on Alzheimer’s.

  1. Olive Oil May Reduce Type 2 Diabetes Risk

Olive oil appears to be highly protective against type 2 diabetes.

Several studies have linked olive oil to beneficial effects on blood sugar and insulin sensitivity.

A randomized clinical trial in 418 healthy people recently confirmed the protective effects of olive oil.

In this study, a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by over 40%.

  1. The Antioxidants in Olive Oil Have Anti-Cancer Properties

Cancer is one of the most common causes of death in the world.

People in Mediterranean countries have a lower risk of some cancers, and many researchers believe that olive oil may be the reason.

The antioxidants in olive oil can reduce oxidative damage due to free radicals, which is believed to be a leading driver of cancer.

Many test-tube studies demonstrate that compounds in olive oil can fight cancer cells.

More research is needed to determine whether olive oil in fact reduces your risk of cancer.

  1. Olive Oil Can Help Treat Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease characterized by deformed and painful joints.

Though the exact cause is not well understood, it involves your immune system attacking normal cells by mistake.

Olive oil supplements appear to improve inflammatory markers and reduce oxidative stress in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis.

Olive oil seems particularly beneficial when combined with fish oil, a source of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.

In one study, olive and fish oil significantly improved handgrip strength, joint pain and morning stiffness in people with rheumatoid arthritis.

  1. Olive Oil Has Antibacterial Properties

Olive oil contains many nutrients that can inhibit or kill harmful bacteria.

One of these is Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that lives in your stomach and can cause stomach ulcers and stomach cancer.

Test-tube studies have shown that extra virgin olive oil fights eight strains of this bacterium, three of which are resistant to antibiotics.

A study in humans suggested that 30 grams of extra virgin olive oil, taken daily, can eliminate Helicobacter pylori infection in 10–40% of people in as little as two weeks.

Feature: Let us celebrate Founders Day in unity and with pride

0
Founders Day

Today, we celebrate Founders Day in order to pay tribute to all known or unknown individuals who contributed and sacrificed lives in the name of achieving independence for this country, and to declare our firm belief in multi-party democracy, freedom and liberty.

On this day, we celebrate the ideals of “United we stand,” and justice against tyranny. Not the rabid partisanship that continue to divide Ghanaians and push people further away from their fellow citizens.

Today, this country is still in a political and economic crisis. Sadly, today, we are still divided in almost everything, stuck in pre-independent divisive politics. Founders Day thus gives us an opportunity to seek a blueprint to how we should move forward as a nation willing to build a country for us all. It is the celebration of a nation’s quest for freedom, unity and discovery of manifest destiny.

Attempts by modern-day Ghanaian revisionists who are hell-bent on criticising Founders Day because they believe they should have autonomy when it comes to celebrating the heroes who fill us with reverence, admiration and awe. Their stance negates the role of other patriots. This attitude chip away at our domestic freedom, weaken our unity and slow down our nation building efforts.

Disunity and acrimony is a choice. Unity, empathy and compassion is attainable. It is worth fighting for inclusive multi-party democracy. Therefore, in order to build a successful country, the people should stand against the partisan mob and their desire for unchecked power to define ‘truth’ because there is always the potential for abuse and manipulation, which leads to increased levels of distrust and polarisation.

It is said that “the cure for ignorance is knowledge; sadly, there is no cure for stupidity and a closed, bigoted mind.” Unfortunately, by allowing a few people to define “truth” would effectively silence opposition voices in the country and destroy congenial, respectful local debate, encourage corruption, increase our poverty levels and allow tyranny to thrive. We have a lot of work to do.

It remains unclear exactly how much control the partisan mob will ultimately have over ‘truth’ determination in this country but given recent events, it is clear that the debate will continue for some time into the future. No matter what happens, we should thrive to restore a sense of shared values and ensure that common sense and patriotism is not an uncommon virtue in Ghana.

The history we have recorded in this article is accurate and fairly portrays what some prefer to deny. This denial is simply intrinsic to a certain myopic worldview.  The fight for Ghanaian independence did not start in 1947 with the founding of the UGCC.

Neither did it start with the formation of the Convention People’s Party. We say this not to recreate the past, but to create a future worthy of the men and women who laboured, and lost so much to bequeath us freedom and independence.

The call for reforms and the eventual independence of the Gold coast started way back in 1889, and include patriots like, John Mensah Sarbah, J.W. de Graft Johnson, Chief J.D. Abraham, J.P. Brown, J.E. Casely Hayford, S.R.B. Attah-Ahoma, Africanus Horton and some prominent chiefs.

We cannot discount their roles when celebrating the founding of independent Ghana. The movements they formed —- the Aborigines Rights Protection Society and others —- helped lay the foundation for political action that ultimately led to independence. Their activities helped create the first legislative assembly with Ghanaians included in governance.

The United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC),formed on August 4, 1947, with the expressed vision of restoring the peoples’ right in their property, rule of law, decentralisation and the rights of the individual to pursue his own right to create wealth, was the very first active ideological political party with membership from all the people in the Gold Coast.

The leadership included J.B. Danquah, Pa Grant, A.G. Grant, R.A. Awoonor-Williams, Edward Akufo-Addo, William Ofori-Atta, and Ako Adjei. Many prominent chiefs and ordinary men and women supported and sacrificed their time and money to grow the party.

Before the UGCC, however, were (1) the Gold Coast People’s League and (2) the Gold Coast National Party. Both political parties, did not have any discernible programmes or vision, were tribal based, and existed only in anticipation of political independence. Ideology, to them was simply put, irrelevant. Their promises were mere slogans and bumper stickers.

Joseph Boakye Danquah was a brilliant thinker and scholar. But Joseph Boakye Danquah was a very poor political organiser. It was for this reason that he and his colleagues invited Kwame Nkrumah, a brilliant political organiser, to come and help turn the UGCC into a mass Party.

In an interesting turn of events, Nkrumah left the UGCC in 1949 to form his own political party the Convention People’s Party (CPP); taking with him all the structures, he had organised for the UGCC. Most of the radical youth, including Komla Agbeli Gbedemah, followed him.

Founders Day is not the celebration of the birthday of Ghana. That is reserved for 6th March. Founders Day, contrary to rabid partisans and revisionists, is simply to celebrate men and women, who contributed their money, time, their blood and ideas in very small ways to push the colonialists away from this country. The struggles started way back in the 1800’s to the founding of our country.

Men and women including the Ga chief, Nii Kwabena Bonne known in private life as Theodore Taylor, Sergeant Nii Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe and private Odartey Lamptey and all the unknown individuals who were wounded at the Cross Roads, Accra, in 1948. We need to celebrate men and women like K.A. Busia, S.K. Dombo, and Rebecca Naa Dedei Aryeetey, popularly known as Dedei Ashikishan, Hanna Kudjoe, Sophia Oboshie Doku, Agnes Oforiwa Tagoe-Quarcoopome, Amma Nkrumah and many other unsung heroes.

Indeed, the Ghanaian independence struggle succeeded because of so many individuals and groups. We should therefore not allow the hubris of a few people destroy our unity and determination to build a nation of diverse people and ideas. Given the state of clear and indisputable facts, why does a band of charlatans continue to bang the drum on identity politics when it comes to individual contributions towards our independence?

Sadly, Ghanaian politicians always need to have an enemy, somebody to fight, some entity to attack, and some group that they must convince the people, are trying to destroy their lives, a group that must be destroyed in order for development to take place. The present and continuous obsession with ‘systemic’ destroy everything, any ideas, apart from Nkrumah and the CPP threatens Ghanaian resilience.

Our economy has not worked as well as it should since 1957 because of the stupidity of a few who continue to confuse us to bicker among ourselves on mundane issues. We are uniquely capable of developing this country in unity.

Celebrating Founders Day should therefore help us to strengthen our multi-party democracy and use the opportunity to reflect upon constitutional values, liberty, unity and freedom. Celebrating August 4thshould provide a better option than all the attacks and denigration of certain individuals on their role in the independence struggle.

The thinking that there was only one person, whose contribution led to the independence of this country, cannot dominate the Ghanaian psyche. We must refocus our attention on unity. We should be grateful for our forebears and those who contributed to our freedom and independence, notwithstanding their failings.

We should concentrate on what each of us can do to succeed in our own lives and to solve the social and economic problems before us; and to collaborate that initiative with humility that acknowledges both our own limitations and the reality that the most meaningful contributions often come from sources and people we least expect.

Where emotions rule the day, thought dies and with it liberty and wealth. A lot mess out there needs to be fixed to waste our time on useless debates on who founded what. We have to work together to develop this country. No excuses.

C.K Akonnor denies receipt of $100,000 from Sports Ministry

Former coach of the Black Stars, C.K Akonnor

Former coach of the Black Stars, Charles Kwabla Akonnor has denied claims by the Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, that he received $100,000 following his sacking.

Akonnor was dismissed as Ghana coach in September 2021 following a run of unconvincing results from the team.

The former Asante Kotoko coach was replaced by Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac and according to Honourable Ussif, the Ministry compensated Akonnor after his dismissal.

“We still owe Milovan [Rajevac],” said the Minister at a press briefing last week in Accra.

“C.K and Milovan, once their contract was terminated, we sat with them, negotiated their exit and C.K was paid $100,000 immediately after the negotiation, same as Milovan.”

However, Akonnor has quickly refuted those claims, stating the money received was not $100,000.

”I never received the kind of money the minister mentioned. I don’t want to put out how much they paid me but it was not $100,000 as the minister said,” Akonnor said.

”My contract is still with the FA and if he likes he can go and check the agreement we had and see before making the claim and he will know that he is wrong,” Akonnor stated.

This year’s GHALCA Top 4 cancelled –Kudjoe Fianoo

0
Chairman of the Ghana League Club Association, Kudjoe Fianoo

The Chairman of the Ghana League Club Association, Kudjoe Fianoo, says the cancellation of this year’s tournament has taught the welfare governing body great lessons so there are no repeats in the future.

The highly anticipated tournament, which was originally scheduled to kick off on August 6, was set to have premier league Champions Medeama SC, Aduana Stars, Bechem United, and possibly Bibiani Gold Stars taking part. Gold Stars expressed their interest in replacing Asante Kotoko, who had withdrawn from the competition.

In an interview with Citi Sports, Kudjoe Fianoo stated that without sufficient financial backing from corporate firms, and limited time constraints, they were forced to decide to cancel the tournament.

“The fallout is so promising for the organization in the sense that from my interactions with all the corporate bodies, nobody is ready to do this one-stop kind of sponsorship.

“They think that sponsorship must run for over a period of time and that will make them comfortable.

“In the course of the year, you’d have to come with your proposal, so we have learnt very good lessons.”

Last year’s tournament was won by Great Olympics for the first time after triumphing in the final of the competition held at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) organized the competition, which saw the top six teams from the previous season’s Ghana Premier League compete for the ultimate prize.

Berekum Chelsea, who finished seventh, was included because champions Asante Kotoko declined to participate due to their pre-season tour outside of the country.

Trial of alleged ‘Accra Commando’ attacker starts August 8

0
Court hammer

The trial of a Pensioner, who allegedly attacked the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, popularly known as Accra Commando, somewhere in December last year will commence on August 8, 2023.

Nii Odoi Kwao II, alias Robert Koomson, 61 and a retired Computer Programmer, allegedly attacked the minister in traffic, at Osu, a suburb of Accra.

The Prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Evans Kesse, has given indication to the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah, that three witnesses would be called.

According to him, the witnesses in the trial will include Minister Henry Quartey, his Dispatch rider and the Investigator in the case.

This was revealed during Case Management Conference (CMC) held yesterday. However, the order by which the witnesses would testify was not disclosed.

The accused has been attending court for some time now, until yesterday’s decision to commence trial next week.

The start of the trial also means Prosecution has filed all the necessary documents to pursue the case to its logical conclusion.

Background

Nii Odoi Kwao II has been charged for causing road obstruction, threat of death, assault on public officer and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.

The charges arose from the accused alleged act of slapping Mr Henry Quartey in traffic, amid the use of unprintable words, as well as threatening to kill him.

The 61-year old pleaded not guilty to all the charges and is currently on bail.

The Facts

According to the Prosecuting Officer, the Complainant in the case was a police officer stationed at VVIP and attached to the Greater Accra regional minister, as his Dispatch rider, while the accused is a retired Computer Programmer who lives at Osu in Accra.

He said on December 8, 2022 at about 1:10pm, Mr Quartey, together with his security detail were visiting Osu and on reaching a section of the road, he observed that the accused had blocked it with his Kia Bongo car, preventing the Minister and others from accessing the road.

The Court was informed that the Complainant signalled the accused to give him and other road users way, but he refused and retorted that nobody can access the road unless he finishes with what he was doing.

“The action of the accused person created a heavy traffic jam on that stretch of the road. Based on that, the Honourable Minister decided to advise the accused to move his car from the road, but the accused person ignored the Regional Minister,” the court was told.

The accused, according to the prosecution, rather became violent and threatened that if the Regional Minister gets closer to him (Nii Odoi Kwao II) he will kill him (Mr Quartey).

In addition to the threat, the accused resorted to using offensive words on the minister, including a claim that he is a thief and has stolen state money, but he is moving freely.

The Prosecutor, in describing the sequence of events, said the accused later abandoned the vehicle in the middle of the road, locked it, removed the ignition key, kept same in his pocket, rushed on the Regional minister and slapped him.

It was at this instance that the security detail of the regional minister, who the Court suggests should be changed, moved in swiftly to arrest the accused person and handed him over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Accra.

The accused allegedly admitted to the offence in his caution statement during investigation and was accordingly charged with the offences and brought before the court for trial.

Josko Gvardiol ‘ready’ to take the next step to join Man City-Kovacic

Josko Gvardiol

Mateo Kovacic believes Croatia team-mate Josko Gvardiol is ready to make his next career step and join him at Manchester City.

City are negotiating with RB Leipzig for the 21-year-old defender, valued at around £86million by his club, who want talks concluded before the season starts.

‘Josko has great potential,’ Kovacic said. ‘He can come here and learn and be the best version of himself. I’d obviously like it — I’m a good friend with him and he’s Croatian. It would be nice to have a Croatian by my side here.

‘He’s already played a lot of big games. He is ready for this step.

I think it’s a good time (to join City). They are on a great run, a very confident team and a team you can learn from. They have possibly the best manager in history. So I came here to join a great group and to try to learn.

‘He’s still young but he’s mature. He doesn’t need much advice. He had a great World Cup and a great season with Leipzig.’

Kovacic, a £25m signing from Chelsea, is so far the only fresh face in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Onana rants at Harry Maguire during Manchester United defeat to Dortmund

0

New Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana showed he will bring more to Erik ten Hag’s team than ball-playing ability during a 3-2 defeat by Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas.

The 27-year-old Cameroon keeper, who came on at half-time, has a reputation for letting rip at team-mates.

And he had a furious rant at Harry Maguire after a slack pass to Christian Eriksen gifted Dortmund a chance.

Onana denied Sebastian Haller then raced from his goal to berate Maguire.

The former United captain kept his counsel, which is more than could be said of fellow defender Brandon Williams in a separate incident. Williams was involved in a slanging match with Tom Heaton, who started in goal as United’s three-match tour of the United States ended in defeat in front of 50,857 at the Allegiant Stadium.

Williams had been responsible for Donyell Malen cancelling out Diogo Dalot’s excellent opening strike, but took exception to being blamed by Heaton for Dortmund’s second goal, barely a minute later, when Victor Lindelof gave the ball away.

Heaton seemed to suggest Williams had been too slow getting out and had played Malen onside. Williams evidently disagreed, making his feelings known in industrial terms.

Antony equalised for United but another defensive error – this time from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who gifted Dortmund possession close to the penalty area – ended with Youssoufa Moukoko scoring the winner.
